CharacterPersonality: Though it only shows in an unwillingness to share at first, Athena can be a very possessive person. A childhood spent traveling the world did wonders for giving her a certain flexibility in her way of thinking. Athena is good at seeing things from other people’s point of view. However the constant travel also meant letting go of a lot of good friends over the years. As such anyone she gets really close to she’ll be possessive of to a sometimes alarming degree. This can lead to jealousy toward other people and things that take her people’s attention away from her. Her response tends to be more passive aggressive. Athena prefers to show her rivals that someone belongs to her, rather than drive off her rivals with cruelty.
Despite her possessiveness she generally doesn’t get all that angry about other people moving in on her friends, family, loved ones, and things. Instead she just gets jealous. If she’s to get annoyed in any way it’s general due to a stubborn patient or jokes about her name. For real anger though prejudice is a sure fire way of riling Athena up. Whether it’s prejudice against her for being a mutant or against someone else for any number of reasons it all makes her furious.
Athena is a surprisingly easy going lady. She’s very friendly and easy to get along with at first. It’s only after she’s known someone for a while that the possessiveness and other faults make themselves known. As such she usually finds it fairly easy to make friends. It’s the keeping them that’s the hard part.
Athena wants to be a good person. She’s traveled the world and seen a lot of suffering along the way. However, like most people, she can’t be bothered to do much beyond token donations to charities unless something is happening right in front of her. The only exception is her job as an EMT. Athena decided to become an EMT as a way of being a better person while getting paid for it. This way she could feel better about herself and make a job out of saving people. She’s also hyperaware of her personality faults. Athena perceives herself as too selfish due to her possessive nature and feels that she’s not as good a person as she could be. This tends to make her insecure about who she is and feeds her possessive nature all the more. She tries to make up for it by maintaining her good looks. While she feels that she’s flawed as a human being, at least she’s hot.
Hobbies/ Interests: Leatherwork
Job or part time job and description: EMT (Paramedic Training, waiting for certification exam) and part time waitress.
Fears/ phobias/ concerns: Athena fears losing people whether that’s to death, dislike, or just disinterest. This is part of why she’s so possessive of people that stick around.
Special talents: Medical knowledge and excellent first aid skills as required by her job. Good balance from all the ambulance rides. Capable of staying awake 24 hours at a time and keeping it together the whole while. Some gymnastic training when she was younger has increased her flexibility.
MoralityGood/ bad/ neutral/ other: +2.5 Good but not a saint. If helping is easy or her job then she’ll do so. If whatever is happening is maniacal villain “I want to take over the world!” or “I’m going to kill ALL the puppies!” then she’ll try to stop it. But effort beyond that is for other people.
MutationsMutation description: Snowy Owl Shifter: Athena can shift into a snowy owl. The shift isn’t an entirely accurate one as she still retains some of her human mass. Thus her owl form is a fair bit larger than a normal example of the species. She is 2 and ½ feet long with a wing span of roughly 6 and ½ feet and weighing around 9 lbs in her owl form. She is essentially the size of a large Eagle Owl. The mutation has had a few minor cosmetic effects on Athena. It altered her hair color to match the feathers of the owl she changes in to and changed her eyes from green to yellow. However her most obvious change outside of her owl form is the ability to swivel her head a full 270 degrees like her animal form can.
It takes Athena about a minute to shift forms from human to owl or vice versa. She does not take her clothes with her when she shifts.
Strengths: Sharp talons for clawing things, good hearing, great distance vision, and flight.
Weaknesses and Limitations: One minute shift time, pain in joints and muscles after shifts, and she is naked after each shift. Athena’s eyes are locked forward even in human form so she has no peripheral vision and has to turn her head to see things to either side. The 270 degree rotation of her head even in human form mitigates this somewhat but not completely. Athena can only shift into and out of owl form 3 times a day and each successive shift adds to the pain in her joints and muscles. She can stay shifted for a maximum of 6 hours at a time but she's never run into this limit.
Physical AbilitiesGeneral Physical Capabilities: Athena is far more about speed, reflexes, and flexibility for Athena. Those are her best traits of the lot. Out of those three flexibility reigns supreme with reflexes and speed following in that order. She’s better in terms of stamina than she is strength but it is highly doubtful that either will ever be her strong suit.
Fighting Style: Some minor training with escrima sticks and staff fighting but nothing that remotely resembles a formal fighting style yet.
Fighting Style Pros/Cons:Pros:
- Smack it until it’s unconscious.
- Doesn’t have to get too close to hurt you.
Cons:
- Take away her stick(s) (Not de stick!) and she’s mostly harmless.
- Bludgeoning damage vs. slicing or piercing damage. It hurts but won’t draw blood quickly.
History Of Your CharacterAthena Zorya Jones was born the daughter of a pair of college professors in Athens, Greece. Through a combination of luck in the lottery and inheritance from a slightly more well off relative the pair had accumulated enough wealth to travel the world for some time like they had always wanted. Along the way they had Athena and instead of settling down they simply took the newborn child on the road with them. It was an interesting life for Athena. She was always seeing and experiencing new things. Some of her parents’ friends taught her things. She trained in gymnastics a little as well as in the use of escrima sticks and staves. Because of the mobile nature of her life Athena could never take up these hobbies full time but she did practice when and where she could. It was a rare thing for the family to stay in one place for more than a couple of months.
Friends were a rarity because of the constant moving. The only people Athena could count on to be around with any certainty were her parents. They were kind and loving people. They accepted anything that their daughter wanted to learn or do. Athena treasured them and any friends she managed to make and keep along the way. Being college professors her parents didn’t neglect her education. They homeschooled her during their travels. Over all it was a good life, if a bit lonely. Things didn’t change much until she turned 16.
It was airplane trouble that sparked Athena’s mutation. Some heavy turbulence and loss of control by the pilot result in a panic in the passenger cabins. Among those panicking was Athena. As it can, this panic led to the activation of Athena’s mutation. In place of a young 16 year old girl was a large snowy owl. Certainly larger than any other snowy owl the people on board the plane had ever seen. The panic stopped and all grew quiet for the space of a moment. The pilot regained control of the plane during that time and flight continued. However shouts of outrage or fear caused by Athena’s transformation replaced the previous panic. The rest of the flight was tense but thankfully free of violence.
Athena’s parents were more than supportive. They were thrilled. Mutants had fascinated them for a while and they’d purposefully met as many as they could in their travels. However the transformation had had other effects. Athena’s hair and eye color had changed. She couldn’t move her eyes anymore but her head could rotate about 270 degrees, a full 100 degrees more than most people. Plus there was her animal form to consider. Some of the places they visited reacted favorably to Athena’s new talents. Her parents saw no harm in letting her be open about what she was. At least until the first mob tried to kill her for being a mutant. Then they decided it might be safer to settle her down somewhere in the States to finish her education.
Athena attended precisely one year of public high school in New York City. Her parents set her up in an apartment and got her enrolled before leaving again. They assumed their daughter was mature enough to take care of herself. Fortunately they were mostly right. Athena got through her year of high school and then had to decide what to do with herself. She knew there was plenty she could do but eventually she settled on EMT training. By becoming an EMT she could get paid to help people. The training was quick compared to most other options and Athena was at work by the time she was 21. It took some adjusting and a second job to afford rent on her own after her parents stopped paying but it all worked out. She’s now completed her additional training to become a paramedic and is only waiting for the next certification exam.

Sample RP:Today was a long day for Athena. She’d had longer. EMT work frequently ran much longer. But the people she saw in that job usually weren’t in the proper frame of mind to stare at her chest or butt for practically every minute of their meeting. Athena told herself it was just part of the job. Waitressing wasn’t exactly a noble and respected profession. The sooner her paramedic certification test came around the better. Once that happened and she got a raise or a new job she could quit this place. Until then she was stuck serving hash browns and hard boiled eggs to losers on her days off.
Sure the attention was flattering at first but Athena knew that she was hot and didn’t need their stares to validate that. The first had come in with the breakfast crowd and wasted more time than anyone possibly needed to eat there. He had not said anything luckily and Athena was more than willing to let it pass as one creep in a day was to be expected. Sometime around luck the karma of that thought kicked her full force. The second one ordered a cup of coffee and a BLT and then sat there staring at her. This went on for about two hours before the manager politely asked him to leave.
By this point Athena was on her way to being irritated. Two creeps in one day was pushing it. Thankfully after that little affair she only had another hour to go before her shift was over and she could go home. She would fly tonight after the sun went down. Not for long. Athena needed her sleep since she had to work tomorrow. But flying was relaxing and after this Athena was sure she could use it. Now if only she could be so lucky as to get through one hour without another creep showing up.
