The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>>"Wait! You don't scare me."
Astrid let out a scoff and turned back to face the girl. She didn't look nearly as confident as she sounded. However, Astrid figured it was worth letting her think she could intimidate her. It might even end up being entertaining.
The girl continued to chatter away in her falsely confident voice at Astrid. Astrid simply raised a raven eyebrow and watched her make a fool of herself by handing her the necklace.
It was pathetic, really. The girl couldn't even stand up for herself enough to take her phone back, so she was offering a trade. A poor trade at that. What would she do with an ugly necklace not even worth fifty dollars?
She let the girl hold her breath for a moment longer before reacting to her offer. It wasn't a good deal - a necklace for an expensive phone, but the girl looked desperate. Astrid despised the fact that her face appealed to her mildly empathetic side. She made a 'huff' noise and took the necklace aggressively from the girl. She took a good look at it and then tossed the phone in the general direction of the princess.
Astrid looked back up at the girl, her face sort of annoyed. "You're welcome," she grumbled, her French accent evident. The necklace might end up being worth something, but definitely not as much as the phone. She really needed to get her caring side under control. Giving back a cellphone to a spoiled girl was far from evil.

Holding a cellphone hostage from a little princess was hardly the worst thing that Astrid had done that day (stealing ice cream from a little boy took the cake), but her reaction was the best one she had managed to get in a while. The girl looked frightened. Genuinely frightened. Huge black wings did have their perks, even if they didn't involve a comfortable sleeping position.
The girl begged her using the sweetest voice that had ever reached Astrid's ears. It was a grating noise, which only made her grip the phone tighter. So, she didn't have any money with her. The winged girl weighed the little rectangle in her hand and studied it. The thing looked expensive. She could probably get more than fifty bucks for it.
>>"Why are you doing this?"
Astrid merely shrugged at her question. If she were able to snark in English, she probably would have, but she simply settled for being aloof.
The smirk returned to her face as she pocketed the cellphone in her black dress. She had recently been in a kick of buying dresses with pockets. Exclusively in black, of course.
She turned back to the girl and gave her a mock salute. "*Au revoir, Princesse."

Mornings were constructs designed to punish the world. For what, Astrid didn't know, but that thought invaded her head as she walked through Central Park at the butt-crack of dawn. She wasn't usually up that early, but someone had told her that people were more generous in the mornings, so she decided to test the theory. They were dead wrong.
She had packed up after only half an hour of busking, and instead decided to walk around the park for a while. People gave her an even wider berth than usual. Her appearance was still as off-putting as ever, but coupled with the fact that she looked like she would murder the first person to speak to her wasn't exactly helping.
That's why she was so surprised when someone decided to speak to her. Her jaw clenched and all of her muscles seized at once upon hearing the horrid English that spewed out of a blonde girl's mouth. Her head turned very slowly to look at the girl. 'Princess' was the first thing that came to mind as she studied her. Maybe it was the long blonde hair and fair skin, or maybe it was the way she actually seemed to be enjoying the morning, Astrid didn't know. She did know immediately that she didn't like her.
>>"Have you seen my phone? It's in a glittery silver case. My name's inlaid in pink!"
Astrid understood the first sentence, but some of the rest was lost on her. The winged girl's black eyes searched the girl for a moment. Did she seriously think that she would have any idea where her phone was? It was a big park, and she wasn't exactly looking very closely at her surroundings. But alas, she figured, if you're a princess you don't really think of anything except what's immediately in front of you.
Then, Astrid spotted something. It was shiny, and glinted in the light. It was just laying there on the ground, waiting for her to pick it up. She reached over and held it out so that the girl in front of her could see it. A cell phone in a silver glittery case with a name fit for a princess written in pink.
"Fifty dollars," Astrid demanded and smirked at the girl as she held it out.

Astrid frowned darkly at the girl. That hadn't been the reaction she was expecting. If the girl could understand French, showing her where she was wrong would be much easier, but since English was the only option, she would have to make do.
She stood up, next to the girl in the mirror. "You are... Better now..." She struggled for words that would convey her meaning, "more... Looking... At you... From... Person... With... Decisions..." Her lips pursed together in thought. That didn't sound quite right. Hopefully the girl would understand that she was trying to tell her she would be respected more.
She studied the little girl on the bed with her dress and headband. It wasn't exactly an evil thing to do, giving her a makeover, but it had been fun. Plus, it had been a while since she had had an interaction with someone that wasn't aggressive. Maybe she would do two evil things the next day to make up for it.

Astrid ignored Abby's comment of protest and began to run her fingers through the girl's short mane. Within a few moments, she had pulled the girl had brushed her hair towards one side of her face. Then, she reached in one of her bags and dug out a silver headband, placing it on the little girl's head.
"Voila!" Astrid said once she was finished, "you are look much better, oui?"

The boy was infuriating. From his smug expression to his pompous voice, everything about him set Astrid on edge. Her wings bristled, causing her feathers to stand on edge. If he wasn't careful, she wouldn't be able to stop them from changing form.
He pointed to her knee, making Astrid look down. There had been a cut there earlier, but it was gone. It had stung when it was there, but it had also looked rather cool, she thought. God, there was no end to the grating nature of him. She ground her teeth, trying to stop what was about to come out of her mouth.
But... Why was she trying to stop it? It was her goal to try and be evil, and attacking a rude teenage boy on the streets was pretty evil. A twisted smile formed on her lips as she let curses fly at him. Even the English people walking by them turned their heads to look at them as she spoke. <Being French doesn't save you from a terrible personality,> she shouted afterwards.
Her wings changed form instantly as she did, and she gave him one more moment. She wanted him to say something else in response to make her even angrier. It was easier to shoot the crystals when her shoulders were tense.

A small tingle spread across Astrid's skin after she slapped the boy's hand. It was a slightly strange feeling, but she didn't really think much of it. It was likely just the excitement from using French again.
She shrugged at his question. She didn't, really, but she wanted him to, so lying seemed like the best option. <I suppose I do. Is having wings not magic in some ways? Magic is just perception, and reality is within the eye of the beholder.> What a load of trash.
The boy was rolling his eyes at her. She had been warned about American teens and the attitude they had. Of course, he was really a Frenchman, but it was difficult to tell from his mannerisms. She rolled her lips into a snarl and furrowed her brow at him, angered by his response.
<You hardly let me finish,> Astrid hissed at him, <there are many more cards in the deck, and you haven't even asked any questions yet. But I suppose that's your trouble, now, you low life cheapskate. Good luck when you're left bleeding on the streets with no hint to your future.> She was still trying her darnedest to bait him, which meant getting defensive. Of course, that wasn't all that difficult for her.
She stood up in a huff, her wings puffed out in fury. She had completely forgotten that she was still meant to be selling to other people, and that where the boy was sitting was her spot. And her sign.

The boy was a bit of a smart aleck. Astrid rolled her eyes at him, trying her best to ignore his comments. Usually, she would have put up much more of a fight, but she figured it wasn't smart to punch a (sort of) paying customer.
He chose his three cards and laid them down in front of him. One was backwards, so he extended a hand to fix it. Instincively, Astrid slapped it away before he could.
<Don't touch,> she warned hastily. <This is dangerous magic that you're messing with. You do want to find out your future, don't you?> God, she was trying hard to sell this. She shook her head, letting a feather float to the ground for extra effect.
Astrid bit her lip, trying to think of something to say about the cards that would sound like she had any idea what she was doing. There was one card with horses on it, one card with something that looked like a jester, and one with a sun. They all had English words underneath them, but that wasn't a lot of help to her.
After a second, she let her instincts take over, and began to run her mouth. <This means that you're going to go on a trip, soon.> Astrid began, <and while there you're going to have a good time, but you will run into trouble along the way. There will be something that you expect to go well, but will go very poorly instead. The sun signifies that you have a long, bright future, but it will take some time for any of your endeavours to go well. For the time being, you should enjoy life and not try to hard. Otherwise you will die.>
She finished her last sentence very quickly, looking back up at the boy expectantly. <Tips are more than welcome.>

Astrid's lips parted for a second, about to say something in reply, before the boy began to speak again. That time, she didn't have to struggle to understand him at all. In fact, the words that tumbled from his mouth were in her native French language.
She paused for a moment, her mouth slightly parted as she studied him. He took her sign and sat on it, which she would have said something about, but she was still in shock from his words.
<I speak,> she replied in perfect French after a moment. <Your French is too good for you to be a slobbering American. Where are you from?>
He took out a wallet; velcro with dinosaurs. Astrid scoffed at him. Of course the only French person she would meet would carry something so childish. It could be overlooked, of course, because she could actually speak to him.
Cautiously, she took his offer of the coupons. She held the little slips of paper in her hand, studying them. It was better than nothing, especially since there wasn't exactly a line up of people waiting behind him. Although, she had heard nothing but poor things about the MacDonald's in America compared to the ones in France. She didn't really have that many other options, though.
The boy offered to fix her sign in exchange for her services, even finishing the offer with a huge smile. Astrid cocked an eyebrow at him. She had thought her sign was pretty good, but that would explain why no one was speaking to her. That and her convenient location of the ground.
<Fine.> She nodded to him. <But no palm readings, then. Those cost the full price.> She took out the pack of cards and shuffled them in front of him. She had absolutely no idea what she was doing, but her poker face was pretty good.
She splayed the deck out in front of him so that he could see all of the cards face down. <Chose three.>

No takers.
Astrid say for what felt like forever, simply waiting for someone to try their luck. But time passed, and so did the people. Every once and a while, someone would glance at her, and occasionally laugh, which irritated the girl to no end. She was about to abandon hope when he sign moved.
Her eyes trailed from the soggy cigarette butt to the young boy standing near her. Her ears vaguely registered that he was apologizing.
Astrid gritted her teeth, fed up with the dehumanizing reality of living on the streets. She was about to chew him out before she remembered that she was supposed to be selling to him.
So, instead of getting angry, she forced herself to smile at him. It felt like her lips were being stretched beyond their normal limit.
"This is alright," she voice sounded foreign as a sweet, I'm-just-a-helpless-street-girl quality took over. She coughed once and tapped the definitely-correct sign at her feet with a pale finger, hoping to stretch his empathy enough to make him pay.

When you get down to it, New York is expensive. Especially for teenage girls on salaries of less than ten dollars a day. Busking was fun, of course, but somedays people were much less willing to spend money than others. That was one of those days.
Astrid turned over her cello case, trying to shake out the loose change that she may have missed when going through it before. A nickle fell out. The girl's shoulder's slumped a little. The extra five cents brought her total up to $2.78. Not even enough for a hotdog at the stand.
Her black eyes scanned the crowd angrily, trying to see if there was someone passing by that would be easy to pick-pocket.
Who was she kidding? With her wings, she was about as out of sight as a fog horn. There was no way she could go undetected enough to steal a wallet. Perhaps if she just picked someone up and shook them really hard... She shook her head, knowing she needed another plan.
Then, her eyes fell on something lying on the ground near a garbage can. She only seen something like it once before, and even then it had only been at a distance. She stood up and put her cello away, looking around before walking towards the object.
Astrid picked up the little rectangle and held it in her hand. It was what she thought it was. A pack of tarot cards. She went through it, eyeing the ratty bunch of paper. She had no idea if it was complete or not, or even what to do with them, but a lot of tourists would believe almost anything. Especially if you sold it right.
She grimaced and fished around carefully for a piece of cardboard to use, and eventually found one. She sat down on the ground, fluffing out her skirt in a circle. Her cello rested next to her, along with the money she had made that day.
On the sign, she wrote: Tarot Card Reeder: Get To Nowing You Fuchur. $15.
Then, she pulled some feathers from her wings and used them to weave her hair into an intricate braid. For added effect, she pulled off some crystals and set them around her to look professional. The tarot card reader that she had seen before had some kind of crystals with her when Astrid went.
The girl smile, rather pleased with the overall effect of it. The sign looked good, too, she noted. Definitely no spelling mistakes in there. She was getting much better.
She got out the cards and set the sign in front of her, watching the people that glanced at it. All that was left for her to do was wait for customers.

The young girl's lips curled up in disgust as she watched the man in front of her eat. It was rather horrifying, the way he shifted his jaw and ate an entire steak in a mere three bites. Astrid had been eating quickly herself, but that was strange for even her.
His jaw shifted back as he began to address her. He had seen through her lie. Of course he had; it was terrible. Normally, she wasn't a bad liar, but it was difficult to lie when that annoyed.
Her eyes followed the business card that he put in front of her and studied it for a second. The man continued to hover over her like a creep as she did, which annoyed her to a high extend. She considered just ripping up the little slip of paper and leaving, but that didn't quite convey the message she wanted.
Instead, she shifted her wings and pulled off a rather long, thin crystal. She drove it into the wooden table, pinning down the business card in the process.
Then, she turned to Kaz. <"Mind your own business, creep. I can get by on my own,"> she told him harshly and stood up.

Astrid ground her teeth as she listened to Kaz. For her, she was giving him a lot of leeway. A lot. It was most likely due to the aggressive sounds her stomach made when she thought about her meal on its way.
<"Keep it,"> she muttered to him as she watched him put the money away. It stung a little, knowing that the entire night had been a waste of time, but her ego was more important. <"I'll fare just fine. I come from weathy roots."> The last sentance came out in a rather haughty tone, since she was trying to make it believable. But it likely just sounded like a fourteen year old trying to seem special.
Her eyes brightened a little as their server came by. Her plate was set down in front of her, and she began to eat right away. She ate quickly, as if she hadn't seen food in some time - which she hadn't. She kept her head down all the while, ignoring her companion completely.

Cheat.
Dirty cheat.
Astrid's light expression changed instantly as her lips pursed. It had been nice to hear her own language again, but once the knowledge that he was cheating surfaced, it was difficult not to view it differently. Especially since she hadn't been all that fond of him to begin with.
Her expression remained unchanged as he spoke to her. She let him finish before saying anything to defend herself, although she was steaming with anger. Her black eyes followed the money that he placed on the table under his liquor bottle. It was a very generous amount, which only caused her anger to boil over. She didn't want any handouts. Especially from dirty cheats. She had come to the U.S. to make her own way, not to accept handouts from rude strangers.
<"You know nothing about me,"> Astrid hissed, her voice brimming with animosity. <"For all you know I could be playing for only pokey change. Or I could just be greedy. I don't need your stupid, punny handouts. Keep it to yourself, old man."> If it weren't for the steak that was due to arrive at their table, she likely would have stood up and left.
