The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Jayden had to make a concerted effort not to keep turning her head to check the door and see if the Meta bot had followed them. Nervous shoulder checks weren't exactly the best way to remain inconspicuous. Did she hear a commotion outside or was that just her imagination? No way to know for sure and for the moment she had to force herself to ignore it. Damn, did she ever hate her life at that exact moment.
"You don't eat?" The response was delayed from her obvious distraction, her tone of voice perturbed. "How do you, I don't know, recharge then? Or something..." Was that even an appropriate question to ask? Was it polite? Why did she suddenly care about being polite anyway? Rudeness had never been a concern for her before.
"Uh, let me try that again. Nice to meet you Glitch. I didn't mean to be rude. No, I can't make anything but pretty much anything that comes from animals I can make. And its not really from shadows, more like from my personal aura I guess. It just looks like shadows. How about you? I mean, what's it like being a robot?"
Continue talking and distract herself from the possible impending confrontation and flight from the evil robot cop. Good plan. Where good was kind of relative, in this case. Best plan she had at the moment, though.
Adrenaline ran through Darkshift's body, making her extremities tingle in anticipation. When the door first opened no one appeared but as soon as Aura walked up to the door that changed. Two shotgun blasts ripped through the quiet room striking her partner and Darkshift winced involuntarily. However, despite being driven back a couple of feet, the other girl appeared unharmed.
The appearance of the shotgun came with the sudden realization that she wasn't just playing at being a hero anymore, this was the real deal. She was putting her life on the line for some mutant girl she didn't even know and although the pay was handsome, it wasn't enough. Not for her. To continue or not to continue with this insanity, that was the question she asked herself right then and there. If there was a momentary hesitation as she decided whether or not to go on, and there was, the hesitation was brief. She was committed. More than that, the mutant girl needed her and as irrational and baffling as it might sound, she wanted to help. Maybe she needed to prove to herself that she was something more than a simple thug.
Only moments after Aura entered the room, she ran in herself, rolling as she entered the door and found herself behind a chair. The fact that the shooter had been waiting for them meant it was likely there were more of them around as well. Unlike Aura, she couldn't take a bullet to the chest, which meant she had to keep moving and make sure she didn't have to.
Before she could prepare herself to move a second time and follow down the hallway, a knife wielding man came at her from behind, apparently hiding behind another piece of furniture. Fortunately, it seemed, not everyone was armed with guns. The knife struck her side and might have caused significant damage if not for her thickness of her leather hide. In reaction to the glancing blow, her talons flashed, causing deep fissures along the wrist of his knife wielding hand and along his side. Leaving him bleeding on the ground, she swiftly caught up to her partner, taking note of the not insignificant carnage she had all ready caused as well.
Maybe a coffee shop wasn't the best choice Jayden could have come up with but it was the first viable one that came into her sights. They stood out, the robot girl with her bright yellow head and her with her tea-shirt and black mohawk. Nothing to really be done about that now except hope for the best. Some might suggest praying as well, but she'd never put much into the whole God concept.
"I'll go order us something." That way they wouldn't look completely conspicuous. This time of night there weren't many people in the shop and she was first in line. "Two small coffees," she told the barista. She dug into her pockets, finding just enough small change to cover the expense. Score another point for lucking turning in their direction. She walked back to the table, fortunately chosen to be at the very far corner of the room, trying to ignore the eyes of the other patrons watching her. Once sitting, the attention seemed to shift back to whether the others were doing before the two of them entered. Weird or not, two girls drinking coffee just wasn't that interesting for very long.
"The name's...Darkshift," Jayden replied, setting one of the coffees down in front of Glitch. There was just a slight hesitation before she said the name. This seemed like as good a time as any to start doing away with her given human name and embrace her chosen mutant name. "Nice to meet you. Uh, I wish it was in better circumstances." Nerves could be heard in her voice. Now the waiting began to see whether or not they were home free or if they'd have to start running again. Damn, did she ever hate cops and especially mutant hating robot cops!
Break and enter wasn't really Darkshifts' usual method when it came to theft. Not that she'd never done it before, but she'd found a decided preference to committing the act in person. Money was preferable to electronics and jewelry that had to be sold for money and that might be reported and thus prevent the selling not to mention put her in greater danger of being caught. Still, it wasn't as if this soft of thing was completely foreign to her. In times of desperation, one did what was needed to survive.
The neighborhood she and Aura found themselves in was not exactly the sort of place she would have looked for targets in any case. Poor neighborhood meant poor grabs. The risk wasn't usually worth it. Besides, thief she might be but she had a personal code of ethics she tried her best to follow. Only steal from those who wouldn't miss the money. This was a bit of a different situation though. She wasn't here to steal. Or at least, she wasn't here to steal physical objects or money. She was here to help rescue a girl.
Darkshift didn't flinch or hesitate when Aura smashed her way through the window; it was the most obvious way in and she would have done the same. She was quick on he heels of her companion, landing on her feet in a crouch as she jumped through the window her tail extended for balance. A quick scan of the room confirmed that there didn't appear to be anyone within, but the numerous beer bottles littering the ground indicated that the place was definitely inhabited.
Pointing towards a nearby door, Darkshift darted across the room. She stopped stopped just to the side of the door and quietly opened it, careful to remain at the edge of the door just in case anyone was on the other side with the intent to either rush in or shoot.
If only her manifests shifts worked more like Aura's she wouldn't have had to worry about something as banal as a handgun. Not that she didn't appreciate her own wide range of abilities, but right at that moment bullet immunity seemed like quite the appealing trait. Scales and fur were good for some things, but bullet deflection, alas, was not among them.
"Thieves! I'll get you both!" Great. Now the drunk was yelling like a maniac, as if gunshots ringing through the night wasn't enough to attract attention. The fact that she wasn't the maniac wielding the gun and thus any attention would probably be drawn directly to her assailant didn't quite occur to her. Old habits died hard and thief preferred to work in the shadows. Damn her clumsiness anyway!
"Recently? More often than I'd like," Darkshift responded, panting slightly. Only a few weeks ago she might have been significantly winded by this point but since joining the Order, getting herself into better shape had become more of a priority. Mutant super hero and all that. Plus, her partner would be depending upon her and that stood for something. Surprisingly.
Spotting a dumpster out of her peripheral vision, she dove behind it just as a third bullet ricocheted off the metal. "Back here!" She called and gestured for the other man to follow her. Hopefully the temporary shelter of the dumpster would force their attacker to come closer. Close quarters were kind of her specialty.
Putting on her serious face, Darkshift mentally prepared herself for the mission to come. She was nervous, no doubt about that, but it was the sort of nervous that she was able to control. Nerves, so long as you were the one who remained empowered, weren't a bad thing. Quite the contrary, a few nerves were sometimes just the motivation one needed to exceed your best and truly succeed to the fullest extent. If this particular sort of situation was new to her, more general sorts of danger were not. She was going to own this and make it her own!
Darkshift was only waiting a few minutes before Aura arrived. If she hadn't been covered in black fur, the other woman might have seen her blush at the compliment. Being called 'lovely' wasn't exactly a common experience for her and especially not when her head was something decidedly not human. She returned the bow in kind.
"Thank you, Aura." Was it even appropriate for her superior to compliment her like that? Maybe the rules didn't apply in a situation like that. Not that she minded. "I think this is one you should probably take the lead on. More experience and all." Someone else and she might have felt uncomfortable admitting her lack of experience, obvious though it obviously was. Aura, however, put her at ease in her casual acceptance of what she was. "But if you ever want something stolen, I'm you're girl for that," she offered with a slight chuckle.
The skunk was definitely not something she expected and only served to reinforce how eccentric her new boss was. Well, perhaps eccentric was a good thing. She tended to get in trouble when trying to get along with normal. "If you figure it'll be ok, then who am I to complain about its presence?" She flexed her claws in anticipation of what was to come.
Darkshift swore audibly and with colour. How did she get into these damned situations anyway? She was a reasonably good person, right? Just trying to make her way in the world? Doing the best she could? All answers pointed to yes. Well, except the occasional theft from those more fortunate than herself. But that didn't really count, did it? She was careful not to steal from anyone who actually looked like they would miss the money.
The bang of gunfire rang through the air as her victim took his shot in her direction. Fortunately, intoxication effected aim and the shot went wide and a shower of brick debris fell to the ground. "Get back here freak," came the angry oath from behind her, words slightly slurred. "Both of you!"
Brushing herself off from the person she had bumped into, Darkshift swore she spotted a pair of ears in passing. Mutant? No time to question that now, not while she had to save her own precious ass. "I suggest running, if you know what's good for you," See? She was a good person, even offering helpful advice to a complete stranger. She didn't deserve this fate at all!
No time to contemplate the balance of karma as a second gunshot rang through the air, this time coming close enough to almost feel the wind against her scales. Taking her own advice, she bolted forward.
Like most nights, Darkshift found herself outside prowling the the back alleys and out of the way streets of New York City. Unlike most previous nights, she wasn't doing so hungry and she wasn't feeling the desperate need to find her next victim to pickpocket. There was something to be said about the funds that had just started coming in from Aura and her Order. It meant she wasn't hungry. It meant her next month's rent was all ready paid. She felt off kilter. Most of her life had the edge of desperation.
In a way, one might think that there was a new sort of desperation to her life: That desperation that required the learning of new skills and the further mastery of her powers not only to ensure her own survival and that of her new employer and sometimes partner Aura, but also in order to help her fellow mutant. Because now, apparently, she was some kind of vigilante mutant super hero out to make the world a better place for her fellow mutant. She couldn't quite believe that turn of affairs and wasn't quite convinced that she actually believed in the cause yet. Maybe she was just doing it for the money. Probably. Except for that little thrill inside her that said she was doing a good thing and should keep up the good work. Damn that little part of her anyway. It was going to complicate her life, she knew it.
Hiding in the shadows was a skill that could never be overrated and so tonight, in a further dedication to the burgeoning new direction of her life, that was her intent to practice. Her powers, covering her skin in pitch black scales from head to tow, helped the visual side of things. It was pure skill that was going to help the auditory side of things. She was all ready good. She needed to be great. Along with the pitch black scales, she grew a night black panther tail from her tailbone and a matching set of black panther claws from her fingers. You never knew when a little self defense might be necessary.
Darkshift hadn't honestly planned on stealing that night, but when an easy mark stumbled into her path, how could she resist. His clothing marked him as wealthy and his stumbled marked him as a little bit intoxicated. Creeping up behind him was the easy part. A clawed hand slipped covertly into a back pocket and, just like that, his wallet was hers. She must have made a noise then, or something, because just as she was turning to flee he yelled and drew a handgun. Damn! Running and weaving from side to side to make aiming the thing more difficult, she ran head first into another person. Double damn! Tonight was not her night.
It hadn't been long since Darkshift's recent meeting with Aura about joining the Aura before she got her first call. The money she'd been given had gone a long way to paying her rent and ensuring she had plenty of food in the fridge. A weird feeling, not having to stress about where her next meal was going to come from and whether or not next month would be her dreaded eviction. Even so, she continued her thieving ways, in part because she didn't know any other life and in part because there was no way to know when this stroke of good fortune would suddenly vanish into thin air just as quickly as it had appeared.
It was Lisa who called her up to let her know that it was time for her to go and earn her keep. A girl, not much older than herself, had been admitted to the hospital last week with a severely bruised face as well as a broken nose and several cracked ribs. It had all the markings of an incident of domestic violence which was, in a city the size of New York, nothing unusual. Nothing, certainly, for the likes of Aura and Darkshift to deal with. Except that the girl was, apparently a mutant and that made it their business. Because that was why she had decided to join, wasn't it? To help mutants. What bizarre twist of fate was that, turning her into some kind of vigilante mutant hero?
From what Lisa had been able to find out, the girl had pale blue skin and was some kind of seer of things far away although the details of exactly how her power functioned were unclear. It wasn't all that important. What was important was that this was the third time she had been admitted to the hospital with similar injuries and it was time to get her out of where she was. A teenage runaway with a youth record, her arrest reports suggested that she was the member of a local street gang. Numbers were unclear, but were likely somewhere between 4-6 including her.
The girl, who's legal name was Jessie Canales, lived in an old dilapidated house that was really no much more than a squat. She was to meet Aura about a block and they were to go in together. Darkshift arrived first and stood shadowed in a nearby alley. She covered herself with a thick leather hide and black bear fur. At the ends of her fingers were 2 inch black eagle talons and her face resembled that of a black panther. A black panther tail grew from her tailbone in order to help with balance. Now, she waited.
As Aura described the uses and limits of her power, Jayden was surprised to feel a thrill of anticipation rise within her alongside the uneasiness that she had been feeling all night. She was no stranger to a good brawl and certainly none to breaking the law, but a real battle that implied really putting her skills to the test in a situation that might end in injury or worse, that was something new. The concept should have terrified her, and it did. But there was also something about the idea of really putting herself and her skills to the test that had a twisted sort of appeal. Especially when one considered that she'd be doing so for an actual cause. Her. Fighting for a cause that went beyond money. Imagine that.
"Are there resources to help me learn to use my powers better and maybe learn to fight properly? I mean, I can use them, they've helped me survive half my life, but I could always learn more, right? And I can hold my own in a fight but I'm no black belt or whatever. Seems like I've got a reason to start improving myself, right?"
Jayden gathered herself and prepared to depart. Apprehension warred with anticipation warred with pride warred with confusion. Well, if nothing else this ought to mean things were about to get a lot more interesting in her life. "I guess I'll hear from you soon then, right?" She extended a hand to the older girl in order to seal the deal with a handshake.
The trench coat was far from a perfect disguise. There was still that bright yellow head to think about and the sudden wish that she had brought a hat with her. Hats and mohawks didn't normally play well together and having to flee for her freedom with a yellow robot girl wasn't exactly something that could be planned for in advance. They'd just have to be quick on their feet, was all. Nothing new there.
"Store, good idea," Jayden replied in short, clipped tones. It was a very good thing she was adept at dealing with stressful situations. Half her life, it sometimes seemed, was a stressful situation. Irrelevant was the fact that half those situations were probably of her own creation. Maybe it was training for situations just like this one. Funny where one's mind wandered to in times like these.
Walking forward at a brisk pace but careful not to run and thereby increase suspicion, she risked a brief glance backwards. The bot was further behind than it was before and while still moving in their general direction, she could swear that it was moving slower than before and had a look like it wasn't quite certain where they had gone. Or maybe that was wishful thinking, after all, did robots even have looks that expressed anything let alone confusion?
"If we're really lucky I think we might just make it out of this," Jayden spoke, keeping her voice low. She pointed at a late night coffee shop just around the corner. "Lets try to lose it in there."
Casual meeting sounds good. Does Adder tend to be more nocturnal or diurnal? Darkshift is much more likely to be found around the city at night and tends to skulk around some of the shadier areas of the city. Perhaps some sort of late night dark alley meetup?
Excellent! I'd say probably a separate thread from yours with Aura and Mirror. Did you have any specific ideas? Darkshift can half-way mimic at least some the physical aspects of Adder's transformation, all be it in black instead of white. Perhaps that might be something to play with?
