The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Aura had heard of a mutant who was a good candidate for her version of the order, she knew little of the mutant but Lisa had given her recommendation and she respected Lisa deeply. If this girl or woman was dangerous as she was told this meeting would be very nice. They certainly had work that needed to be done.
The foyer was relatively empty but Aura was also planning to take the meeting to a less public location once it began. She hoped for many things including if she was cute. She checked her watch to confirm she still had time before the meeting which was nice, Aura liked to be early, in fact she prided herself on it.
Aura sat down and opened a folder looking at plans she had for upcoming jobs and things they needed to do. She needed to set up a new meeting with Kaz as well to see how his mutant city was going, she wanted to buy property under a false alias and figured he should know since she did not want to endanger his plan.
Aura smiled to herself looking at the door as she heard it open to see who was there, she knew it could be many people but she hoped it was the lady she was to meet with, she was excited from what she had been told,
Jayden was admittedly cranky when she her cell had started to ring early in the morning. Early was, perhaps, a matter for interpretation but given that she was still asleep, she felt it count. Her first words were to curse at the stranger for interrupting her sleep, which the voice on the other end took in admirable stride. Once Jayden had gotten out her irritation at the women, who introduced herself as Lisa, she was willing to actually sit and listen. The story Lisa told was an intriguing one. Apparently Jadyen had come to her attention a while ago and she had been watching her since. Creepy. Definitely creepy. She apparently represented an organization that could make use of her unique abilities and hinted at the possibility of improving her lot in life. Details were vague but more than enough to pique her interest and she jotted down a name and an address.
All Jayden knew about the meeting going in was the name of the person she was going to be speaking to, Aura, and that the organization sought to help mutants. The fact that she, of all people with her less than savoury lifestyle was contacted for the meeting probably implied that the organization was less than savoury. Whatever, its not like she really cared. What she did care about was the opportunity to make some money and make a better life for herself. Better didn't necessarily imply legal.
It as just after dusk when Jayden left, wearing a black trench coat. Underneath her coat, she was covered in an armour of black scales and the ends of her fingers sported black cat claws. Her scales tended at her wrists and her neck so as to not stand out too obviously as a mutant. She knew the scales to be a minor protection, but one could never be too certain. Not trusting people was one of the things that had kept her alive and she wasn't about to do with caution now.
Putting on her best stoic expression, Jadyen walked up to the great golden doors and knocked, waiting for someone to answer them and let her inside. Without a doubt, those doors were a sight to behold. Hopefully the rest of the meeting would hold up to that first impression.
Aura got up and opened the door's with a smile. Her eyes looked over the newcomer trying to spot what her mutation might be as well as other interests of a personal nature she decided against voicing. The hair was interesting to Aura not because it was new but because Aura recalled killing a fair number of people with simmeler haircuts. Still Aura trusted Lisa would know if this woman was a part of the remains of that gang.
Aura herself was a few inched shorter and had long black hair, tied into a tight braid that fell at her waist. "I am Aura, welcome to sanctuary" she said waving the other woman in casually. "please come with me, what we have to discuss is best left out of such public halls. she said and assuming the other woman followed her, she would lead her to a side room down a hallway.
"I don't know how much you know about me or what i do, but before we get to business i should probably mention, i have killed a lot of people, caused a lot of property damage and more in the same of protecting our species. Well much of our work is non-violent i do believe it only fair you know the types of people you work with. " Aura said honestly and openly.
Aura hoped the other would choose to stay and added. "I can compensate quite well if needed or required. " she said and with that her hand was suddenly surrounded in a transparent pink aura which flowed to size inches past her fingertips to form the head of an axe before that shape melted and instead began flowing to form a katana looking blade just short of a foot long before letting that melt to and as it did the aura began to race up her arm to her shoulder and slowly began to cover her entire body in a tenth of an inch thick transparent pink outline. "This is why i have the Name AUra" she said with a smile.
Jayden hadn't expected her contact to be so young. Somehow she thought her contact with some great and mysterious organization would be older, but the woman appeared to be barely older than herself. Then again, maybe the powers that be had chosen her specifically because she was close in age to Jayden. Something about the ridiculous notion of kinship and relating to a peer. That was probably it.
"You can call me Darkshift," Jayden answered. Although it was a name she had chosen for herself months ago, this was the first time she had actually used it. It felt empowering. Unexpectedly so. She followed the other woman, silently impressed at what she was seeing around her. This Sanctuary place was certainly better than her little hole in the wall.
Jayden couldn't help but gape at the other woman as she casually ran down her history of murder and mayhem. Not that Jadyen was a saint herself, far from it; she would never claim to be and likely never would be. But murder? That was a line even she wasn't sure she was willing to cross. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all. Even if the compensation was better than any she could possibly hope to find on her own.
"Not exactly the recruitment speech I was expecting," Jayden finally spoke, cautious. Unexpectedly so. Uncomfortably so. She wasn't good at caution. "I think I need to know about this 'cause' of yours. Why should I care about it? Why is it worth killing for? Or, for that matter, possibly dying for?" Because one kind of implied the other, didn't it?
It was the display of power that really caught Jayden's attention in a way that nothing else yet had. Different than her own gift, certainly, but also strikingly similar. "I think we might have more in common than I first thought," she spoke with a grin and began a demonstration of her own. The black scales that had so far been hidden by her clothing crept up her neck and down her hands to cover every inch of exposed flesh. Black bull horns grew from her skull only to melt away moments later. In similar fashion, black eagle wings grew from her back and then melted away. "That's why I'm called Darkshift." It was also the first time she had ever really shown off her powers. Well, that was certainly fun.
Darkshift that led to some interesting thoughts on her powers, Light manipulation came to mind which while not dangerous was useful in a great many ways. Still she tried her best to put it from her mind.
The reaction Darkshift took at her history spoke volumes. Aura had grown good at reading reactions when she stopped to look though she always knew the looks of surprise, fear and terror on people faces. She could only smile back as Darkshift recovered and got to asking about the cause. That was the opening Aura needed and considerd several ways to convey her message but perhaps painting herself in a better light would work a bit better.
Darkshifts power drew Aura's attention almost more then the woman herself. SHe had questions certainly. But their was business before pleasure and no matter where that went perhaps they could talk more anyway.
"AT the most basic, Because our people need us. Their is a highly transient population here at Sanctuary. Care to guess how many of their stories are happy ones?" SHe began seriously. "But even if one does not feel the need to save our people, we all want to at least save ourselves. Humans will destroy us, already they work on cures and fill the streets with hunting robots to track us down. SHe said with passion. Losing her powers was akin to death to Aura who defined herself threw her powers.
"In the past we have been rounded up in camps like cattle and given pretty necklaces that prevented our powers from use." she said her voice getting a bit louder at her obvious distaste from the idea of the camps. "I had the good fortune to miss the camps myself, instead i was kidnapped, my memories altered and in the case of anything before age 12 or so, erased. WHile we had no idea at the time we were being trained to hunt other mutants when we proved deadly enough and willing to follow orders well enough." She said giving a very brief of her chaotic past which she herself had only learned a few years prior. "In the end they decided to axe the project and gunned us all down, i only lived because i was trapped under a wooden wall, though i could still watch many of them die and the screams..."
"My point is, Humanity has in most cases treated us terribly. It is my belief Humanity will try and kill or cure every one of us. I can work with what your comfortable doing, i realize not everyone thinks killing is something they can do. But everyone can help the cause. Recently we busted several falsely convicted Mutants out of jail and only a few people died....my work. "
"In short our goal is make the world safe for mutants so that we our selfs and future generations may grow up in peace and not believe they are demons. I want a world Like Sanctuary where we can use our powers freely as we were intended to do so. A year or so back in the riots i was ordered to infiltrate and help bring the anti mutant riots to a close." she said unsure if she had answered the question well enough, but she hoped she had. Times like this Aura wished she could still just pass people on to the person in charge which was now her.
Jayden hadn't exactly had a lot of contact with other mutants before that point. Her mother had always cautioned, well caution, and she had done her best to listen. However, she knew of the stories and most of them weren't pretty or happy. Hell, her story wasn't a happy one and, as far as unhappy stories went, her's wasn't really all that bad. Her bigoted step-father had convinced her mother of his bigoted views forcing her to become a teen runaway. Big deal. So far she had managed to steal and swindle her way to a life, such as it was. At least she rarely went hungry and she had a roof over her head.
Jayden barely hid a shudder at the mention of the camps. Those she was familiar with. What mutant in the modern age wasn't? The internet, dubious source of information though it sometimes was, had all sorts of things to say about them but the general conclusion, at least from the mutant side of things, was that they were nothing short of atrocious. They were among the many reasons her mother suggested she not advertise the fact that the was a mutant.
Almost despite herself, Jayden found herself agreeing with a surprising amount of what Aura spoke of. Why should she have to hide herself in the shadows? Why should she have to be afraid to let others know of what she was for fear that they might try to cure or imprison or kill her? If one took the bigots out of the equation, being a mutant was actually pretty great and her powers had lead to her survival more times than she could count.
"I'd like to see mutants thrive. I'd like to see fewer teen runaways like me who were forced to leave home simply because they were born special. I'd like to not have to hide my powers and see others of my kind being allowed to live openly and comfortably in the world. I'm not willing to kill but I think you'll find I have quite a few other talents. And of course, I'm not willing to work for free." Good cause or not, a girl's got to eat, right?
"It's a shame our people are treated so poorly. Unfortunately i can not see an end to it while humans live. Even if we tried to be equal humans would just accuse of using our powers as soon as they got jealous in any competition. " she said sure she was right about this. Happy with the results so far Aura smiled and continued on.
" I do have a few rules. I don't care about humans but try not to kill Mutants. However your survival is priority and as such casualtys to our people while sad somtimes happen. I understand you don't want to kill but i like to be clear." she said with a shrug. SHe hoped she could get her to cross the line, she could use a strike lethal strike force. Time would tell though.
[color=f700c5}"Second is Loyalty. Our secrets and our plans do not leave us and other members. I watched over 200 of my friends be gunned down because one little bast*** could not keep his mouth shut. "[/color] She said sounding annoyed about the incident, even knowing what she knew.
"Third i will respect your limitations in what your willing to do and you will respect my command. I will not ask you or anyone to do what I myself would not do. Order and Loyalty on the field of battle keeps people alive." SHe said seriously. While she did not expect blind obedience like she had been taught she did expect a level of professionalism, after all they were not blind murderers.
Aura reached under the desk and without counting, as she knew how much was in the wad of cash already tossed it to Darkshift's side of the table. "Their is $1500 there, consider it a sign on bonus. In addition if you do wind up in jail or prison i promise you will not sit long, as well as a cellphone for our Business and free housing here at Sanctuary if needed" she said really hating prison herself. SHe hoped this would sit well with her new friend but if it did not they could talk about it.
As Aura spoke, Jayen felt a sense of uneasiness. With the decision she was making here, she was getting involved in something serious, probably more serious than she fully understood at that moment. Maybe she wasn't going to be expected to kill, but it was clear that killing for the cause wasn't unusual. Even if the cause was good, was she ready for that? Still, it also sounded like there were resources to help keep those who were part of the organization out of jail and knowing her history, that was a major perk. If things in her life continued as they had been, it was only a matter of time before she'd end up behind bars.
"I'll be doing my best not to kill anyone," she answered. Not killing mutants felt like an easy rule to follow, at least. "Your rules sound reasonably, I agree to them." Obedience wasn't exactly something she was good at, but if the money was good and they actually did the work that was claimed it was something she could work on. Everyone had their strengths and weaknesses.
"Be trying my best not to end up in prison," she spoke was a sharp laugh that that felt bitter. "I'm pretty sure my powers are the only thing that's kept me out so far. I've got a place to stay but its nice to know I've got alternatives." She accepted and pocked the cell phone and money. "So, what now? Do you call me for missions or something like that?" It occurred to her that she probably didn't have to steal anymore. It also occurred to her that stealing was the only lifestyle she really knew.
"Our powers often are the most important factor in that for me as well. Though it is also why they stopped yelling freeze...." she said with a laugh. It was true that in her case police did not yell freeze or reveal them selfs. Some took the shot, others pretended to see nothing and had a better survival rate. When they yelled freeze Aura just took the time to close distance.
"Basically yes. When i have something i feel fits, i will let you know and we can hammer out a price. If you need me, let me know and i will help if i can. I Like a good fight to be honest" she said. SHe loved how battle made things so clear, time seemed to slow and their was a certain romance to it to Aura.
"Can your power deflect bullets?" she asked keeping her cheerful tone. She asked out of curiosity and because bullets were very common in their line of work. "Mine can, mostly asking if i need to cover you from them" She was also curious about her powers both for professional and personal reasons.
Not for the first time, it occurred to Jayden that Aura must be a very dangerous person; not someone she wanted on her bad side. As a friend, being dangerous could be a benefit. Friend? That was probably the wrong word to use. She didn't have friends and something told her the other girl probably didn't either. Friends implied meaningful connections and meaningful connections lead to weakness. Weakness lead to the possibility of being taken advantage of and she didn't even want to think about where that road lead.
She took in al the information given and filed it away for future use. "Bullets, not so much," Jayden responded with a grimace. "Hand to hand I'm pretty well protected. Anything that smashes, hits or bruises I can deflect as long as its not strong enough to break bones. Small blades don't pose a threat although larger ones are still a problem. Basically, I can manifest scales or thick hide and fur so I figure my defence is about the same as leather armour." It was the first time she had detailed her talents in such a fashion. This was turning into a night of firsts."
"Offensively, claws and teeth are my major weapons although there's also something to be said for extra limbs or tails. I'm not really super strong, but if I manifest the head of a crocodile it comes equipped with the strength of a crocodile's jaws." A somewhat sadistic small accompanied that descriptor. She could think of a couple of people who might deserve getting a hand bitten off.
"If we're going to be working together and quite possibly in dangerous circumstances, mind if I ask a little more about what you're capable of?" It was important to know the strenghs of your allies. Or something. This working with others was going to take a bit of getting used to.
SHe took in what the girl said about her power with interest. Leather could be durable though as Darkshift mentioned of her powers, leather would not take bullets. Still what she could take was extremely helpful. Aura's mind was already considering the possibility as she kept listening.
Claws and teeth were useful as well but the extra limb or tail idea drew her attention more. It reminded her of Meld, whom she had not seen in a considerable amount of time. The idea however she could manifest a crocodiles strength, a fact that well lost on Aura she was still able to grasp the concept of the power enough to draw a lot of other implications. If she could take on a crocodiles strength however much that was perhaps the same was true of birds or the cheetah.
"My aura responds to my mental command allowing me to form weapons and shield myself from harm. However impacts against the aura drain it. I lessen this effect by angeling my aura to try and ricochet or deflect the bullet, so standing behind me or even with me is better then standing slightly behind. I am capable of forming whatever i like but i prefer swords, axe's hammers, drills and chainsaws to name a few. I can manifest two weapons at any time in addition to my shield and can form them from anywhere on my body. I can cut threw lighter metals pretty easily" she said considering her powers. SHe was use to this sort of thing.
"I am also capable of shooting hand guns were decent accuracy, i am proficient in sword combat, i know how to hunt my own food and cook it. I was once hit my a car and my aura did withstand it enough to keep me alive." she said recalling when the Null had hit her with her car.
As Aura described the uses and limits of her power, Jayden was surprised to feel a thrill of anticipation rise within her alongside the uneasiness that she had been feeling all night. She was no stranger to a good brawl and certainly none to breaking the law, but a real battle that implied really putting her skills to the test in a situation that might end in injury or worse, that was something new. The concept should have terrified her, and it did. But there was also something about the idea of really putting herself and her skills to the test that had a twisted sort of appeal. Especially when one considered that she'd be doing so for an actual cause. Her. Fighting for a cause that went beyond money. Imagine that.
"Are there resources to help me learn to use my powers better and maybe learn to fight properly? I mean, I can use them, they've helped me survive half my life, but I could always learn more, right? And I can hold my own in a fight but I'm no black belt or whatever. Seems like I've got a reason to start improving myself, right?"
Jayden gathered herself and prepared to depart. Apprehension warred with anticipation warred with pride warred with confusion. Well, if nothing else this ought to mean things were about to get a lot more interesting in her life. "I guess I'll hear from you soon then, right?" She extended a hand to the older girl in order to seal the deal with a handshake.
