OOC: Same post as was posted in the main dance thread, just breaking off into here as well.
Kealey was already dressed for the dance. Needless to say, she was giddy. These were the things that she’d never been able to do while she was in school. The people, the emotions, it had all been too much. It probably wasn’t going to be easy tonight, especially when the party really started to rev up…but every bit of trouble would be worth it.
The mirror reflected her face, and as the blond meticulously pinned curls to the top of her head so they cascaded down she hoped for a similar reaction to the one she’d gotten the day of the Pokemon tournament. This was different though, this was a significant effort to look nice. A significant effort to look nice for a date. The final pin slipped into place and Kealey turned her head from side to side studying the effect the up-do had on the rest of the outfit.
The dress was simple, a blue that was too dark to be called ice, but too light to be periwinkle. The v-neck was low, but not too low to be classy at a dance involving lots of teenagers. The beading around the sleeves and at the bottom of the V sparkled gently in the light and the dress fell in simple lines down to the floor. It wasn’t an incredibly formal event, so Kealey wore silver flat sandals without even the slightest hint of a heel. They were sparkly though and had thin soles, so they’d be fancy enough for the dress.
Kealey glanced at the clock, it was time to go. Quickly she fastened the simple dangling faux-pearl earrings in her ears and checked the twin curls that framed her face just in front of her ears, giving a final sweep of her bangs she left the room, dress trailing slightly behind her as she walked.
The trip wasn’t long, and when Kealey made her way into the Danger Room, students were already filing inside. Sam was there, and Kealey nodded to him in greeting as she looked for Shin. He wasn’t there yet, but that was okay, over to a wall by the punch bowl the blond moved settling back to watch while she waited for her date. The room had been decorated beautifully, and Kealey smiled as she looked at the lights, they’d make her dress sparkle even more. There was even a….wait staff milling around and making sure everything was perfect. What were the people at the dance already feeling? They were excited, thrilled actually, and Kealey grinned.
What was the empath feeling? Anxious, excited, and just the tiniest bit nervous. She glanced towards the door she’d just entered, trying to keep “impatient” off the list.

The show was definitely suspenseful, and the storyline was even more than Kealey had expected. The blond watched raptly as the monster targeted victim after victim and they were summarily ingested. It was rather disturbing to be honest, but in an incredibly entertaining way. There was also a guy in a great coat. Kealey couldn’t help but think that such a coat would look fantastic on Shin, and she wondered how difficult such a thing would be to make. It was an idea that would have to wait for later, though, as the action was really starting to kick into gear on the screen.
The armor form of the hero in the great coat appeared and Kealey “ohhh’d” appreciatively. The joints in the armor were similar to what Kealey had expected to see the day in Central Park. Kealey realized what she was doing and nearly laughed at herself, this was the single-mindedness Shin had mentioned earlier. She’d gotten the idea in her head to help him with the shard armor and was now fixating. She let it go, snuggled a little closer as the scary moment culminated, and waited to see what would happen.
The fight was well done, the graphics surprisingly good for something on television and Kealey found herself riveted by what was going to happen. The monster was dispatched, the hero saved the girl…after threatening to kill her…then took her home.
He kept her painting, though…and he said he’d kept her alive as some sort of bait for the horrors. Kealey smiled knowingly. Yeah. Bait.
The credits rolled and Shin asked what she thought. Leaning her head back so she could see his face, Kealey grinned, ”It was awesome, really awesome. There’s more, right? What happens in the second episode?”
Yes, it seemed Shin’s enthusiasm for this type of entertainment was contagious. Especially when it was so good.
”Oh, I also think you’d look fantastic in a coat like that.”

I suppose I'll go ahead and post here even though we all know I'm not going to end up staying away from the computer all that much.
I'm leaving for vacation in Colorado tomorrow, and while my evening activity should remain reasonable I'm going to be super busy during the days. I'll keep up with threads, just probably won't be able to get more than a post or two out in each thread a day until I come home on Saturday.
I'll be on AIM all day tomorrow when we're driving...and for those of you familiar with Kansas....you know why I'm asking anyone who has my name to talk to me if they're feeling charitable. I'll be bored out of my ever loving mind...you can really only look at so much Milo, Soybean, and corn.

Somehow, someway, they made it into Shin’s room without spilling any of the food they’d procured. Thor was waiting inside and Kealey had secretly thought about dropping a waffle until Shin gave the dog a treat. It simply wouldn’t have been fair to eat in front of him otherwise. Kealey hadn’t ever really been a dog person, but the husky had really grown on her. She had a feeling he was probably slightly smarter and much better behaved than most dogs, and that was fine with her.
Shin cleared a spot on the table and set down all the popcorn he’d made, then stepped aside for Kealey to do the same with her waffles, the whipped cream, and peanut butter. Wow, they had a lot of food. Shin did his thing with the DVD player, and Kealey bent to pet Thor for few moments. The dog appreciated the gesture and soon enough the movie was starting.
Kealey rose from her crouch and made her way over to sit next to Shin, watching as the intro played and getting accustomed to the subtitles. She was just about to comment on how eventually she always forgot that she was reading when Shin spoke. Kealey looked in the direction he was reaching, and saw that they’d left the food quite some distance away. That simply wouldn’t do, would it!
Kealey was just about to get up to get the bowls when Shin started making shards. Much to Kealey’s fascination, and amusement, they formed a little platform for the popcorn to float to them on.
The popcorn finished its trip, and Shin was proud of himself for his ingenuity. Frankly, Kealey was too. Moving hadn’t been very high on her list of things she wanted to do. She grinned and laughed, ”That’s excellent. I have to settle for borrowing motivation. I like your way better.”
Now that they had their food, and the movie started, they could really get down to watching. Kealey snuggled in just a little closer to Shin, so he’d be a little more accessible for the scary parts. Right now though, there was just an art gallery.

And there he went. Kealey grinned when Shin started to get enthusiastic and explained the different options they had for movies. She’d been right before, all of them sounded interesting and she was sure whatever he picked would be good. In the end, though, it looked like he was going to pick the one that had a little bit of everything. That sounded fun. Kealey nodded her head and smiled.
They’d be watching in Shin’s room since she didn’t have a TV in hers, and they needed to make sure they had all the proper provisions before starting. That required a trip to the kitchens. ”It sounds like we’ve got a plan.” Kealey said, already moving to shut off her sewing machine.
Shin warned her about the content in the first episode of the show they were going to watch and Kealey chuckled and looked over her shoulder at him.
”I know what girls look like, Shin. Last time I checked, I was one.” she said, not a hint of snark in her voice, simply good, teasing humor. ”The violence and lion armor though…maybe you’ll just have to hold my hand through the scary parts.” She punctuated the statement with a wink and they were off.
The kitchens didn’t take all that long, and quickly enough they were making their way back to Shin’s room with all the provisions two people could possibly need for a subtitled TV marathon. The problem was, however, a lack of hands to open doors and such. Kealey looked at Shin, ”I hope your room’s not as messy as mine. We’re going to need somewhere to set all this.”

Calley’s brother apparently went to school at the mansion, but didn’t live there. Kealey nodded her head, the Mansion had its share of commuter students to go with the residents. There were perks to living in the New York area, even if the Mansion was a bit out of the way. And apparently he wasn’t very good at basketball.
More importantly, Shin was starting to put things together about the animal shifter, it was disconcerting to say the least. The best possible scenario was for Calley to leave, and soon.
He sidetracked her again, though, this time with a question about siblings. The question hit kind of close to home, given the situation and the memories Calley had brought to the surface when he’d returned to the Mansion after…after…
Kealey stopped scratching his ears and sat back in her chair. The purring had been nice….but.
”Nope, no siblings.” she said with a half-smile, then slight curiosity took over and she looked over at Shin. Had she ever asked him if he had siblings? Kealey didn’t know, but was about to find out.

Kealey smiled gratefully at Shin when he said she’d been adorable at Aurum’s birthday party. Her behavior that day hadn’t exactly been a point of contention, but Aurum hadn’t been impressed. Ghost had also been there, as well as her husband and adopted child, and Kealey hadn’t been pleased with the way she’d acted. Even if it wasn’t her fault. Somehow though, Shin labeling the incident ‘adorable’ helped considerably.
They were making considerable progress on the cupcakes, Kealey noticed, and when she suggested watching a movie, Shin seemed to like the idea. It did however, present the problem of picking what movie to watch. Their track record was movies and television was excellent, and it would be a shame to mar that with a bad decision on her birthday.
Kealey reached towards a cupcake, then pulled her hand back when Shin got an idea. It was another one of those things that there weren’t specific emotions for…but rather a telltale conglomeration that meant inspiration had just struck.
Nope…he hadn’t show her any of those things, and as he listed off titles, Kealey grinned and drank more of the milk. She shrugged her shoulders.
”You choose. You haven’t led me wrong yet. No reason to think you would now. If the movie is half as good as these cupcakes, we‘ll be good to go.”

Shin seemed alright with the idea that Kealey wanted to do something with him for her birthday. She smiled when he announced this and went about pouring herself a glass of milk while he sampled one of the cupcakes he’d made for her. Awesome almost didn’t cover the way they tasted, especially when washed down with cold milk.
He started to speak, making it sound like there was some kind of special family recipe that he’d followed and was going to share the key to. Kealey listened, ears perked for the special ingredient, the special method…whatever it was that made these cupcakes so good. The build up came….and went. They really had been simple cupcakes from a box. The blond laughed out loud and shook her head, thinking she should have felt the humor long before Shin finished speaking.
More cupcake eating ensued and Kealey dropped down onto the edge of her bed as they tried to figure out exactly what it was that people did on their birthdays. Shin brought up Aurum’s and Kealey winced, ”Yeah…probably not like that.” she said, remember how fun the party had been but at the same time how embarrassed she’d been later.
Kealey thought for a few moments, working on finishing the cupcake she’d started eating. They could go out, Kealey was pretty sure Shin would be up for that kind of activity, and they always ended up having the best time. Then again….
”I think what I’d really like…is something quiet. Can we maybe just stay around here and do something? Maybe a movie? We can make popcorn, or waffles, or something.” she added with a grin while in the process of snagging another cupcake.
More milk followed, and more cupcake followed that. Kealey couldn’t help but think while looking at the shrinking plate of food that it was a good thing these were her birthday cupcakes. She didn’t feel bad for not sharing with anyone but Shin.

It was hard not to be enthusiastic with the how happy her simple admission had made Shin. In fact, it was really hard to not feel absolutely ridiculous for not making it the first thing she’d said when she’d opened the door. He was really excited, the hug showed it.
Kealey hugged him back and grinned, flushing slightly when he spoke in her ear. Deserved them? Deserved them for what? Living another cycle around the sun? Kealey didn’t argue, even if the logic escaped her slightly. Birthdays were obviously another matter entirely to Shin, maybe they should be to her too.
Now Kealey was getting a little excited about the concept and when Shin stepped away and said they were go for cupcakes, Kealey beelined for the table she’d cleared and snatched one up.
Away went the little cupcake wrapper and Kealey took a bite.
”Woah….” she said, trying to deal with the mouthful of coffee-cakey-goodness. ”They’re still warm. These are awesome!”
Shin pointed out that they had a lot of catching up to do if this was the first time she’d celebrated a birthday in a while. What did she want to do? It was a difficult question for someone with so little experience in such matters.
”Something with you…” she said with a bright grin, then shrugged, taking a moment for another bite of cupcake before continuing.
”I don’t know, what do people do on their birthdays? I mean, I remember the other girls at school talking about them from time to time, and I had my little girl parties. Besides that, though, I’m kind of a Blank Birthday slate.”

Kealey nodded her head, she’d definitely help Shin decide how to pare down his schedule a little bit if he wanted the help. He really didn’t sleep enough and that level of exhaustion coupled with classes and other work was a heavy, and potentially dangerous, combination.
Kealey almost winced when Shin got concerned, then looked at him with slightly puzzled interest when his emotions swung and he dropped his head to chuckle. He asked again, and Kealey could tell he was going to be persistent in the matter. It kind of made her want to be stubborn, to hold back to the information. That wouldn’t get them anywhere though, especially not closer to the muffins and out of the conversation.
”Alright…” Kealey said, also shaking her head and smiling slightly, ”Today actually…is my birthday. I wasn’t exactly trying to keep it a secret…it’s just that I didn’t even think about it until I switched the calendar this morning.”
Why had that been so hard to admit? Maybe it was a slightly bigger deal than Kealey had originally admitted. It had just been so long since anyone other than her had noticed.

Kealey grinned slightly when Shin said she was diligent, then laughed while shaking her head, ”More like obsessive. When I get an idea like this I just have to use it.”
Shin really had been busy…with all the things he mentioned plus helping her with training, and helping her with her powers, and spending time with her, the blond tilted her head slightly to the side, ”Maybe there’s more I can do to help with the armor. I’ll think on it. Have you ever thought that maybe you were a little too busy? I mean, it‘s no wonder you don‘t sleep…you don‘t have any time.” she asked.
He was confused by her questions about how he’d figured out it was her birthday…and he didn’t hug her back. Kealey mentally almost-cursed then averted his eyes when he stepped back and held her at arms length.
Kealey caught her bottom lip in her teeth and looked up guiltily and shrugged her shoulders. ”Maybe….” she said, then shrugged, ”It just hasn’t been very important for a long time…”
Deflection time, ”But yeah…you definitely guessed my favorite cupcakes…let’s eat some!”

Shin wasn’t scared. Kealey was even more impressed, he was focused, he knew what he was doing, and even as her powers started to work on the thugs approaching him he deflected a punch with a secondary shield. ”Nice….” she breathed.
There were lots of bad guys, and even though she was bolstered by Shin’s praise for her work it was hard to hold on to the emotions she’d removed. They’d been very strong before, and they still wanted to be there, no matter how much she fought.
Shin boxed the two who had headed towards him and Kealey’s eyes narrowed on them and their own little bundles of emotions, releasing her hold on them and focusing on the ones who were still free. That made things a little easier…still incredibly difficult…but easier.
The rest of the miscreants had stopped fighting and were speaking with each other in calm, logical voices about whether or not they should run. In a different situation it might have been funny.
Sirens wailed and Kealey winced slightly, the NYPD was going to get sick of talking to Shin and her. At least they were coming to help though, she was really starting to get tired.
”I think you can let me out now!” she called, still so focused on the emotions of the thugs that she missed the activity occurring by the stage.

Shin was confused by her question, and therefore Kealey was confused by his answer. It took him a moment, but then he realized what she was talking about and the confusion disappeared.
He had guessed? For some reason, hers continued.
”You guessed? Out of three hundred and sixty five days, you guessed this one and were right?”
That was a pretty good guess.
Shin asked after somewhere to set the tray and Kealey really looked around her room for the first time in a while.
”Oh, yes! Sorry the place is such a mess…I had this idea this morning and I just had to work on it…” she said, working while she spoke to clear off the table. Scraps, pattern pieces, bobbin threads, a thimble, the seam ripper, and a few pin cushions were deposited neatly in a bag next to the table. ”I’ll sort all of that out later.” she said, gesturing to the now, empty table before turning back to him.
”Now, tell me how you made this guess?” Kealey stated, there simply had to be more to the story if Shin had been able to figure out that today was her birthday. She watched as he sat the cupcakes down and moved forward for a hug. ”Thanks though.”
