The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Kealey Quinn was a shopper. Heck, the blond figured that most of the time she could probably throw the word ‘professional’ in there. As she made her way to her destination, Kealey ran through the list of shopping places she knew by name in her head and what each one specialized in. Yeah…she could have been a professional.
…except when it came to today’s errand. She needed a present, a present for Shin. That present was going to be a video game, something Kealey knew less than nothing about. As she walked, she reconsidered that statement. She knew what Shin had told her, and while that still wasn’t very much, it was probably more than nothing. As with many things, Shin had given Kealey a fighting chance with this quest.
This idea had taken a lot of planning, a little reconnaissance, and was going to require just a smattering of luck. The video game shelf that Shin had in his room had provided Kealey with the information on what kind of games and for what system, and Shin himself had told her enough of what he liked that Kealey had a general idea of what she was looking for.
Spotting the shop up ahead, Kealey was feeling more and more confident from her little internal pep talk. She grabbed the door handle and opened the door, how bad could it be?
Pretty. Darn. Bad.
Shelf after shelf rose in front of the blond and row after row of shelf after shelf curled their way around the store. How did so many video games even exist? Suddenly Kealey didn’t feel so confident.
In she walked, trying to figure out exactly where it was she should start. An arm crossed her belly, what was she so nervous all of a sudden? Almost panicked over the fact that there were more video games than she’d expected? There was only one answer.
As she walked, looking for the Wii section, Kealey studied the other patrons in turn, trying to figure out who it was who had her belly full of nervous butterflies.
It didn’t take long.
He was younger than Kealey, and she tilted her head as she looked, wondering what could possibly have someone this nervous in a video game store. Most boys were in heaven in places like these. In fact, most of them were shocked when they saw her. Kealey frowned…she was wearing a simple sun dress and her hair was in a loose ponytail…what was there to gape at in shock? She shrugged and turned her attention back to the nervous boy.
He was wandering a little aimlessly from section to section, and Kealey kept half an eye on him as she browed through games. It only took a few moments for her to realize that this was going to be much more difficult than she’d previously thought. There was a game clasped in each hand, but the blond just wasn’t sure which one Shin would like…or if he’d like either. The other indecisive people weren’t helpful to the empath either and she sighed a bit impatiently, where was customer service when she needed it?
Nowhere to be found. Of course.
Kealey looked up to find the nervous guy standing across from her on the other side of the rack. He was in a videogame store…he had to know something….right?
”Excuse me…” she said, ”I’m trying to buy a game for my boyfriend…and I didn’t realize there was so much to choose from…is there any way you could help?”

Kealey nodded, cheeks still burning slightly when Shin echoed her request that the series had ended with a kiss. He was looking at her so intently it was hard to look back for a moment, then the slight tension broke and Kealey smiled as he leaned forward and kissed her on the cheek. That was much better.
Shin was calmer now, and it made it a little easier for Kealey to think things through. What he’d said made sense, but the romantic side of Kealey had just wanted a little bit more out of the end of things. Shin pointed out something that Kealey hadn’t known and the blonde’s eyebrows rose fractionally.
”A movie? Well, why didn’t you say so before?” she teased. Surely there’d be at least one kiss there.
Shin explained again, and while Kealey wasn’t quite sure what Shin was talking about when he referenced Casablanca, she knew enough to remember that it was a movie with a great separation scene. Maybe that’s what had her a little up and arms, ”And as noble as it was, I guess I feel a little strongly about separation. So very much can happen…” she said, and then she let it go. That was more than enough to say on the matter.
Shin pointed out that he liked the ending the way it was, and Kealey had to smile again, ”It’s obviously a great ending if it can provoke so many feelings in two people. Even if the feelings were slightly different.”
Shin asked if she wanted to watch the next one, and Kealey nodded her head. ”Absolutely.”

Needless to say, Kealey wasn’t expecting the reaction she got from Shin when she expressed her disbelief about the ending of the series. His emotions weren’t exactly angry but they were intense. He wasn’t sure about something too, it made Kealey confused. She frowned slightly as he spoke, trying to piece the emotions together with the words.
Shin was missing the big picture here. It wasn’t the separation that was bothering her. It was the way they’d left each other. Maybe she was missing something…some little piece of the puzzle that would make it all make sense. Shin was taking it a little too far though. The blond shook her head, staring at her hands in her lap.
”That’s not what I was saying at all…I never mentioned ‘settling down‘.” she said softly.
”I just…after everything, they just walked away from each other. I know he was being all noble and letting her go off to become a great artist, but it was all so…distant. What if something happens to him while he’s working up north? It was noble and all, and I get that, I just…”
Kealey sighed. ”Would it have killed the guy to show a little affection before he walked off? One kiss…or at least, ‘We’ll see each other at Christmas…’ How is she supposed to know for sure?“
Kealey shrugged, cheeks coloring as she felt even sillier than before, ”I guess that’s silly.”

Kealey nodded to Fade's summation of teenage emotions. They were very focused on there here and the now. The simplicity made things easier, the intensity made it harder. Kealey was still warm, but it had faded a bit since Sam took his walk across the room to wish a student happy birthday. The blond figured there was nothing like a teacher walking through the crowd to cool any overzealous intentions.
While Kealey was grateful for Shin’s intervention in the line of questioning about her powers, at the same time she shared a bit of Fade’s horror at the direction that things had gone.
Shin was intent on listening to what the other woman said, and the gears in his head were turning. There was something…sly in his emotions. No, sly wasn’t a good word for it. He felt crafty though, and he was suggesting to Fade that there was a way to find out if Sam felt the same way?
Kealey looked back at Shin, her head tilt mirror in him as the math added up to what exactly he was thinking she should do. Kealey shook her head right as he explained that it might be cheating if they did it that way.
”I only suspected with you because everything happened sequentially. I’d had to make a guess on something like this and be wrong.” she said, raising an eyebrow at Shin.
”Besides, don’t you think it’s better to let people figure these things out on their own? People have to be ready for those kinds of revelations.”
Kealey turned to look again for Sam and found him still speaking with the students, ”Besides…Sam is kind of hard for me to read, and stubborn as a mule if you try to confront him about feelings.” This probably wasn’t helping, Kealey realized, and she grinned at the redhead.
”I’d let him know though…” she said, ”He might not even realize you feel that way. Sometimes people can be thickheaded about these things.”

If Kealey had enjoyed watching GARO, she didn’t know how to put words to how Shin had felt about it. Needless to say, he’d liked it, and his emotions had given Kealey cues a few times when she wasn’t sure how to feel about things that had happened. The emotional overflow in situations like this was okay, even thoroughly enjoyable at times. It was nice to be on the same page as the person you were watching with.
Kealey had been so flabbergasted by the ending, however, that she’d forgotten to even notice how Shin was feeling. Now, staring at him as the credits rolled, the blond could feel the afterglow of some pretty powerful emotions. Obviously Shin had felt a bit differently about the ending than Kealey had. Sudden hope blossomed in her chest…maybe she’d read something in the subtitles wrong. Maybe Kouga was just driving away to….run an errand? Okay…that was lame…but still.
>>"Wait. What?"
Shin was confused, looking at Kealey with an eyebrow raised as he obviously tried to figure out what the problem was.
”He’s leaving. She’s leaving? Just like that?” she said, looking back at the TV for a moment, eyebrows drawn together in a deep frown.
Yes Kealey had enjoyed the action, yes she’d liked the verbal play between Kouga and Rei, and creepy parts were always appreciated when watching something with one’s boyfriend…but if Kealey were being completely honest, it was the romance that had held her interest the most. Kouga had been so emotionally stunted for so much of the series…and after so much he’d finally admitted how he felt…
”How could they go through so much together…know how they feel…and just walk away?” she asked, ”You don’t just walk away from someone when you care about them like that…”
She sighed a little.
”It was so romantic…I just….” Kealey trailed off, feeling like a silly little girl. They’d just walked away from each other…even in Disney movies the hero and heroine shared a kiss at the end….

OOC: This contains spoilers for the finale to GARO. If you don't want to be spoiled, don't read.
It was over. They’d popped popcorn, they’d gotten soda, they’d settled in, and they’d finished the epic that was GARO. Kealey had been hooked from the beginning, right from the moment Kouga had taken Kaoru’s painting from the gallery…then hadn’t paid for it. The characters were awesome, the story was riveting, there was action, adventure, death, destruction, and a love story. There had been episodes that had made Kealey want to cry, and there had been episodes that had made her want to crawl out of her skin they were so creepy. The hero was stoic and emotionally stunted and his anti-hero rival was snaky and oh so damaged. In short…it was great.
On top of it all, she’d gotten to watch the whole thing with Shin. What had there been to dislike?
One thing. One.Huge. Glaring. Thing. The last scene was playing out and Kealey sat, leaning against Shin with her head on his shoulder, staring at the screen as a limo rolled away from the lone figure standing in the street.
Sure the rest was great. Kouga looked at the last page of the book Kaoru‘s father had written…he even shed a few tears…but Kealey was confused.
”Woah, woah, woah, woah….” she said as the credits started to roll.
”She’s going to Italy. Seriously, Italy?”
It made no sense! They'd won, they'd defeated the giant naked demon woman. Feelings had been revealed...now they were going to go their separate ways?! Kealey looked at Shin in disbelief. Italy.

The shock and surprise in Fade’s face and emotions were something that Kealey was used to and took with a grain of salt. It was a little shocking to most people to find out that someone who was probably a perfect stranger knew all your emotional baggage. Most people were curious, some people were fascinated, a few people were angry…Kealey was used to it all. Fade’s simply surprise and curiosity made the blond smile, especially when the redhead pointed out what a workout tonight probably was.
The blond shrugged with a return laugh, ”It’s actually not too bad. Like I said…teenagers feel things really strongly, but mostly they’re simple emotions. The beginning of the night was kind of difficult with all the anticipation, but now…” she trailed off. Explaining all this would not only be boring, it would be embarrassing.
The small group was silent for a few moments, and when Shin reached for her hand she entwined her fingers with his and smiled. ”Everyone’s pretty happy now.” she finished instead.
Fade asked another question, and Kealey was about to try and put it in words again, when Shin stepped in and turned the question back on the asker. Kealey was relieved she was off the hook as far as talking about her powers was concerned and she gave Shin’s hand a grateful little squeeze.
The question hadn’t even occurred to Kealey. Given the emotions she’d felt from Fade a few moments before, there had been no need to ask. She was impressed by Shin’s perception, though, and waited patiently for an answer to the question.

Kealey had to admit, even in her agitated state, that Shin was doing absolutely everything he could to help. The boxing ring, the lessons on hitting, the opportunity to actually physically exert herself… If she’d been in any other kind of mood she would have been touched. For now, she filed the information away for later and concentrated on the task at hand.
The Danger Room, it seemed, was an absolutely never ending source of marvels. The red punching-pads appeared on Shin’s arms and Kealey studied him, and them, for a moment before she assumed the stance that Shin had showed her.
The first punch was timid, and Kealey wondered if she wasn’t afraid that the Danger Room would fail in its end of the bargain. The soft cushion of the pad belied her fears though, and the second was harder, followed by the third. Concentration and form were important, and Kealey did her best to throw her punches exactly how Shin had shown her. It was more difficult, the harder she hit, but the hard hitting felt so good…
It felt so good that when she swing a little wild and her fist glanced off the inside of the left pad, its trajectory only altered slightly, still moving in a straight line. Just at another target.

The summer sun was still hot as it filtered down on the streets of Manhatten. It had been a while since Kealey had ventured into the heart of the city, and as always, she found it mildly overwhelming when compared to the relative seclusion of the Mansion.
She’d seen the streets from above a few times, courtesy of the person walking beside her, and Kealey gave Shin a quick grin as they walked. It almost looked like an ocean of cars, busses, bikes, and people. They moved as one if you looked long enough, but if you looked close enough they were all individuals. Each one had their own thoughts, feelings, agendas, and frustrations that they were dealing with as they made their way wherever the crossroads of the world was leading them. Kealey could feel them all.
The blonde’s comfort level with this was night and day from where it had been just a year before. It was almost amazing to think back that far and remember what it had been like to be in a crowd of people. It had been like a mosh-pit of emotion then…and Kealey had been almost constantly overwhelmed. Now, each person had their own little bubble. Their emotions still spilled over, but somehow the compartmentalization helped her not get so distracted. So did having someone with her.
Kealey looked to Shin and grinned again, when she’d announced that it was time for her to go into the city and sign up for classes she hadn’t even had to ask him to come along. Shin was good like that. Sometimes Kealey wondered if he wasn’t a little empathetic himself…he had a knack for knowing what she was feeling or what she needed.
As they walked, the blond noted a small café to the side of the road that specialized in smoothies and iced coffees. Registration lasted all day and it was still early. She slowed, ”All this walking and sun is making me thirsty. Want to stop and get a smoothie? My treat.”
There was a nice little outdoor area with tables and Kealey nodded towards them, ”We can even sit outside.”

Shin said they could practice with her powers as the conversation moved away from Harry Potter, and Kealey nodded. ”I know…we’ve already done a little…” and they had. Bit by bit, things were becoming more clear to the blond. It was incredible how well compartmentalization worked when a person was trying to sort out their emotions from a crowd.
Luke got quiet, and Kealey turned her attention back to him. People normally reacted, at least a little, when she told them about that aspect of her powers…the blind man was simply mulling over everything. He was also…mentally aww’ing? Kealey laughed softly and grinned in Shin’s direction before turning back to Luke with a similarly broad grin.
”Well, I’m glad you’re back, and that everything got sorted out.”

Kealey’s cheeks got even hotter as Sam pointed out the obvious and Kealey nodded her head. ”Every last bit.” he wasn’t judging her for the feelings, but there was something…impish in his emotions. Then he winked at Shin…who was feeling all sorts of interesting things. He was curious, he was happy still, he was…something else Kealey couldn’t exactly place but was warm and fuzzy.
Kealey smiled at him and went back to feeling mildly awkward at all the things rolling around inside her chead.
At least she wasn’t the only one with sudden climate problems. Kealey smiled gratefully at Fade when she echoed the sentiment about the recent temperature rise in the room. Sam chose that moment to go wish a student a happy birthday and as he walked away, Kealey felt things in Fade that made her wonder if the heat increase had really been an idea of her own. The blond turned to look at Sam as he walked off, then the red-head in front of her….interesting.
Fade turned Kealey’s question back around on her and the blond thought for a moment, wondering if this was the best time to explain.
”The costumes are just something I do for fun…and hopefully my eventual career.”
Here it came.
” Besides that….I feel emotions.” she said, eyes scanning the crowd, picking out each different pocket of emotion. ”All of them. All the time. Kind of like that gas station…with all the frozen sodas…only with emotions.”
Kealey inched closer to Shin…she wasn’t quite overwhelmed, but there was a lot going on in her head.

Kealey listened, albeit impatiently, as Shin explained the proper way to throw a punch. The information was important, but she didn’t want to listen right now…she wanted to act. As frustrated as she was, taking that swing and the brief grapple had felt good. It had been somewhere to direct the emotions. The blond bounced slightly on the balls of her feet as she listened and watched.
Feet, body, legs, hips, shoulders. Kealey mentally checked off each one as she took a practice swing at the air in front of her. Again, the motion felt good, almost like she was letting the air out of a shaken 2 liter of soda bit by bit to keep it from exploding.
She watched as Shin demonstrated the things he was telling her, and Kealey could see what he was talking about when he mentioned the power coming from places other than a swinging arm. The balance in this was as important as it was in everything else. Shin was good at this. Kealey took it as a sign of progress that she noticed.
There was something else wrong with her form though.
Shin pointed out the proper way to make a fist, and Kealey looked down at her clenched hands. Sure enough, her thumb was inside her fingers. She imagined what it would feel like if she punched someone like that and winced slightly. It probably wouldn’t feel good.
Like a pitcher…it was a good analogy and Kealey mimed Shin again as he demonstrated. Her feet were apart now, just a bit wider than shoulder-width, and she pivoted slightly each time she swung. Kealey knew she probably didn’t look as good as Shin did when he did it…but it had to be an improvement.
”I get it.” she said. ”Now, can we practice some more?”

The punch was wild, and Kealey had known it. Part of her was utterly shocked she’d even managed to take a swing at Shin. None of this was his fault. The anger and frustration were flowing freely now, though, and in the back of her mind Kealey was a little afraid she wouldn’t be able to stop them now that she’d let loose.
The punch was blocked easily, and before Kealey knew what happened she was on the ground and pinned with her arm behind her back. Shin wasn’t hurting her, but Kealey growled all the same, immediately pushing to her feet and swinging around to face him as soon as he released her.
Shin wasn’t mocking her, and the serious tone of his emotions helped Kealey center herself a little bit, even with all the emotions from the try-out trying to burn their way out of her at once. She wanted to fly at him in an absolute rage, and at the same time she wanted to flop down in the middle of the floor and cry. She didn’t do either. Kealey had worked on her powers too long and too hard to let something like this completely undo her. Shin was offering to help, and she’d accept.
Kealey was focused, fully and completely on Shin as she faced him, giving a curt nod at the critique he gave at her initial attack. ”Show me the right way.” she demanded, her usual meekness dashed to bits by everything else. ”And that other thing you did too. Taking me down like that.”
