The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Gawain wasn't exactly speaking what was on his mind, but the echoes were tuned in so Evelyn was still getting quite a bit of what he was thinking. It was probably a bit unfair, reading his body language like that, but she couldn't always help it. Sometimes the subconscious curiosities overwhelmed logic with her powers. The internal struggle for words played across his features in slow motion, then he responded.
>>...."It... can be distracting."
Evelyn fiddled with the end of her hair and nodded. Forte had pointed out the weaknesses in her powers before, and her habit of letting them get her side tracked. The concern there was valid. "That's a good point... I think I can handle it though. I mean, from a power standpoint, I've already been working on redirecting my echoes towards what I'm doing. I mean, it's not perfect, but I've made progress. Because my powers are so in tune with my emotions and thoughts, it's been like training the rest of me too... I wouldn't want to make you feel awkward or anything when you're trying to work though..." She glanced at Gawain again, wondering if it was a good idea after all. Getting side tracked and having your nose smacked was one thing. Getting distracted and getting seriously injured or killed was another.
Angua's tail continued carelessly wagging. The echoes momentarily counted the wags.

Gawain's body language shifted as Evelyn spoke, and she could see the flicker of emotions pass by. Surprise was most prevalent, and then there was something the echoes were assessing as disbelief or concern. Fair enough, she wasn't exactly the best candidate for this sort of thing, but her reasoning felt sound enough.
"I thought about the police thing, but, I just...I feel like I could be useful with the X-men. I mean, when stuff happens I usually end up staying out of the actual fighting anyway. But The echoes can be good strategically if they're trained right. I'm not sure the police would really know how to work with my powers like a team would. But I'd like to try." She tried keeping her sentences confident, rubbing Angua behind the ears for support.
"I mean if I suck at it I can still try to work with the police. But I kind of like how it feels when I get to use my powers for more than just organizing artwork. I feel like I am useful." There was an unintentional test in that statement. Telling her no would lesson how capable he thought she was. But she also gave an out as well with the option of trying working with the police if the x-men was just too much.

Some of the lingering concern left Evelyn when Gawain turned to face her. Angua helped a lot as well. Something about the dog always made her feel better. She never had a pet growing up, but the oversized puppy like behavior made her feel like she missed something. She obliged to the requested woofs for pets first, then turned back to the Mirror-walker. The arrow had landed somewhat off from it's target, and Evelyn had to stop the echoes from analyzing it's trajectory.
"Hey." She smiled, wandering over and rubbing the back of her neck. She thought through this conversation a number of times, but she still wasn't sure how to approach it. In the end, maybe it was better to just cut to the chase... "So... I was thinking... Maybe I can do more with my powers than just work at the museum. I mean, they've been pretty useful in some of the training simulations and stuff we've been doing..." Ok, maybe it wasn't the most direct approach. It was better than 'hey, since I already seem to be a target for danger, let's mark it with an X!'
Actually, that might have worked...
"I was just....I was thinking about maybe trying out for the x-men?" The question mark sort of tacked itself onto the end, as if she expected the disapproval to follow.

Life had been somewhat complicated for Evelyn lately; at least, it felt that way. Sure, she still worked at the museum, and was living at the mansion, but after her squabble with her parents, her bodyguard leaving and her general way of life somewhat disintegrating, she just felt somewhat at a loss. Work wasn't what it used to be. After the riots she didn't feel like her relationship with her coworkers had got any better, and that sensation of doing something useful with her powers was fading away. Self-defense training had boosted her confidence, but it also gave her the unmistakable desire to do something more.
The idea of joining the x-men had come up before, but she hadn't considered it seriously back then. She was too much of a damsel in distress to really consider herself useful, but with training she started realizing there was more her powers could do. She wasn't bad with the sai she had trained with, and strategic analysis was something she picked up on even quicker. She felt like she could be doing more, and with the occasional trouble always seeming to brew in the city, it seemed like that could be an outlet. Mirror and Sam were both x-men, and while it wasn't always glamorous, it appealed to her. If nothing else, she could at least bring up the idea. But that felt like it was easier said than done.
Dating Mirror had it's occasional push and pull moments, and most of those hit when they came across her whole 'independence' sort of thing. Mirror was big on protecting, and it was kind of hard to do that if someone you cared about had a knack for putting themselves in danger. She wasn't sure if she should just outright say what she was thinking, or try to bring it up casually. In the end, she decided she'd try baking something. Maybe food would help.
After burning the cake, she decided she should abandon that idea. Maybe just talking about it would be safer without adding in the risk of food poisoning...
Eventually Evelyn found the mirror-walker out on the mansion grounds. It was a quiet week so at least there were no kids hovering around. It was hard to have a conversation with people staring at you. Pushing her hair from her face she shoved the nervous energy away and approached.

I thought about this and I did have one more question that came up. What would the time frame be on this plot? I think if you sort of set one beforehand it might help, because during the riots there were points it juts seemed to stretch too long and it felt like people were loosing interest waiting to get from point A to point B. The last stage felt a little bit nicer because we had sort of in character dates of 'this happens between BLANK and BLANK dates. Sometimes it's hard to tie your characters into a plot that could span for several months.

Evelyn had spent months at the mansion, and time seemed to blend together in an unusual way. The stress and chaos of the last few months was almost overwhelming, especially for someone who couldn't forget. Images stayed frozen in her mind: being chased threw alleys and sewers, getting thrown through the air, falling; injuries lingered, pain returned, and emotional struggles never went away. Her parents rejection of her never lost it's force, and gradually it all built up.
Endless nights and long days blended together, until sleep let it all rise to the surface. She didn't feel herself climbing out of bed, mind still filled with playbacks pushing her through the hallways. Evelyn didn't dream, she remembered, and her disoriented figure wandered through the mansion, outdoors, and into the trees outside the school.
In her head, the images churned. While she was stumbling towards the trees, her memories were running from a monster prowling at her heals. When she fell and her hand caught a tree for support, she felt alley walls, and felt the sting of bruises on her body. Her eyes were open, but she wasn't seeing her surroundings. The images in her head were haunting her, and leaving a terrified imprint on her actions.
For the first time, the echoes started chattering over the playbacks. [Outside mansion. Trees, grass, nighttime. Bark underhand.] The seemingly innocent remarks rattled her thoughts. Her vision flickered, the playbacks breaking, and she pressed her back against the tree, fighting the nightmares. Finally, she sank to the ground, pajamas picking up the dew from surrounding grass as she tried to orient herself. For once, she wished she could just dream. It was a lot easier to fight nightmares then hide from your own memories.

The string of words from Forte's mouth made Evelyn's face color further. She felt much younger than she was suddenly, a school girl embarrassed by his compliments. The echoes made it impossible to doubt how genuine he was being, but her own mind had trouble understanding it. She didn't feel brave, or stunning. Smart, ok, she could get that, but without her mutation she doubted that much would have been possible. She shuffled, listening to the lesson behind the meanings though. Her own reactions were a weakness right now. If someone could embarrass her into loosing a fight, she needed to learn to overcome that.
He moved, and she flinched back slightly, then stumbled back from the shove. She lacked the self-defense training to stand properly still, but his challenged irked her just enough she swung her elbow out, aiming for his side. Figuring he would have to side step to avoid it, she brought her leg again in quick succession in a sweeping motion towards his shins. It wasn't particularity powerful, but she was quick thanks to her size. The echoes flickered back, watching for movement in his muscles that could signal what he would do next.

I think this could be fun, but maybe if we narrowed it down to a few fairy tales? We have the Wonderland plot going right now, and I think just one or two stories have a lot of variety. Too many and I think it's a little overwhelming (at least for me) to try to get involved.

Evelyn was less than thrilled about learning self-defense from a stranger. Age wasn't a big deal to her, but making a full of yourself in front of someone you liked was one thing. This was something different. Evelyn had seen Locke in passing, but she had never spoken to him and knew little specifics about his powers or what he could do to help teach her. All she knew was she was probably an accident waiting to happen, even with the echoes doing their best to help.
Meeting outside made it worse. Evelyn wasn't really the outdoors type, and even after her time at the mansion some of her 'rich kid' persona was still stubbornly stuck to her person. She didn't really have work out clothes, her attire more in the 'less nice' sort of variety, so the jeans, shoes and short sleeved shirt she wore were probably somewhat more presentable than necessary.
It didn't matter though. She was willing to work, needed the lessons, and would make the most of whatever happened. Slowly, she approached the figure in the distance, letting the echoes fan out and take note of her surroundings.

Evelyn's face pulled into a small frown, but she pushed her hair from her face calmly and took the man's biting words in stride. A challenge on her memory was something she took personally, but speaking too soon would just deepen the cut with flawed argument. "Every statement is open to interpretation, so what statement is 'correct' for myself may sound flawed to you. Think what you will, but don't question my memory. My interpretation is the only thing worth looking over." There was a sharp bite to the statement, and she took a sip of her drink.
"I think society thinks we should be given value by those around us. When others compliment us, tell us we look good, confirm our achievements then we can have self-worth. They tell us we need to have confidence, and thus vanity is acceptable. But the only real value comes from confirmation from others.
"Sure, people who are vain feel the desire to be the best. People who are vain sometimes come to think they are the person they imagine themselves to be. Yet part of you still seems to desire confirmation that you are everything you believe yourself to be. Suave, charming, intelligent. Society looked down on you, sometimes still looks down on you. You want to think believing you are something will make you that. But I think part of you still feels the need for confirmation. And that's where you're falling into societies trap. You don't mind being vain. But I think part of you has a problem with needing affirmation." She shrugged.

Evelyn didn't object when she was moved so she was resting her head on Gawain's shoulder. She snuggled into the crook of his arm, hand resting lightly on his skin. It felt nice, and her brain almost forgot to feel embarrassed. She liked being around the mirror-walker, and had the drunk side of her been more in control and the sleepy side, she might have enjoyed it a bit too much. Still, she kissed his neck and let sleep take hold, already distracted from thoughts of the headache she had before.
"We should hang out like this more often..." She muttered sleepily. "Maybe then having playbacks wouldn't suck so much." Whatever memories she got didn't worry her right then. Whether it was sewer monsters, her mother, or just a game of cards. There was a feeling of safety around Gawain. She may have complained before, but it was kind of nice having a knight by your side.

Evelyn wasn't quite a sore loser, but growing up with the echoes made her somewhat startled by not winning. The first time, she accepted it and held up her end of things, but by the time she was loosing again, she felt herself somewhat childishly toss her cards on the bed in a flustered fold, then flopped forward across them as her brain struggled unsuccessfully to locate the ace of hearts.
"I give up." She muttered into the blankets, then pulled herself so her head was resting on Gawain's leg. Her tipsy mind wasn't thinking through her actions anymore, so it was probably for the best sleep was beginning to take hold. "I think I lost the echoes somewhere back during the last shuffles. I'm not smart enough without them to play this game." She didn't know how Gawain lived without echoes. It hurt to think without that part of her brain functioning.

She lost. Tipsy/hungover, tired, and distracted by Gawain, there was little the echoes could do to redeem herself. She glanced down at her outfit, and it felt like her deal was going to bite her faster than she'd like. Sticking out her tongue at Gawain, she slipped out of her shirt, a thin undershirt still protecting her skin from the air. The tank top didn't feel like much though as she debated what else to get rid of. She should have worn socks. Socks would have been helpful about now. Instead, she stood and used whatever courage she had left to kick off the skirt she was wearing before plopping back on the bed. Gawain had seen more when she was wearing her bathing suit anyway.
It didn't keep the color from her face though.
"There. Happy?" She said, tucking her bare legs close and pushing her hair from her face. She tried to focus more on the game this time. There wasn't much else she could loose if she got distracted again.
