The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Fun... Evelyn could think of several other words for this, fun was perhaps not one of her top choices. She caught the throwing star as it sailed at her, which was difficult when the thing was bladed and could have easily cut her fingers. She made a note to get gloves or something next time. She could imagine this going badly next time.
Taking Gawain's instructions, she took aim at a board above the fighters and sent it into the board with a decisive thud. Meanwhile, the echoes kept watch on the shadow figure, who was still slumped on the ground. She had her sai ready just in case, but she wasn't sure how much she could do if he went incorporeal again.
Stun gun... Stun guns would be useful right now...

Evelyn couldn't relate to the whole spirits wanting you to do things aspect, but the echoes definitely had their own goals so she understood someone wanting you to do something or go somewhere. She listed politely as Lana described Toronto and tried to imagine what it would be like. She traced her memories for any images of the city she might have seen, but none came directly to mind.
"It's sounds nice though. Hopefully you'll enjoy it here. I've been with the museum for a few years now, it was my first job and I was relieved to have it. Frankly, I have always been a bit lacking in social skills thanks to the echoes, so any form of customer service seemed doomed to fail. They stuck me in the back in archives though where I couldn't mess things up, and that has worked well so far..."
She considered the next question and the echoes formulated an expansive list. Probably too expansive for the conversation. "New York is a tourist city, so there is lots to do for fun. The zoo, the museums. I really enjoy visiting Broadway as well. Even though I can't forget, I never get bored watching the Lion King. It's always a little different, and somehow always feels a little better each time..." She smiled slightly as the memories drifted through her mind. She could hear the music perfectly, see the lights, feel the magic. If she wasn't fighting with her parents she'd probably visit the show again just for the experience.

Evelyn could still hear the sounds of fighting traveling up from the alleyway, the echoes carefully tracking the progress of the battle. Gawain was still ok, it seemed, but she didn't know how long that would last. It was hard to focus on the conversation she was having when she was concerned that Gawain was still trying to fight two assassins by himself. The echoes had been watching the mutants, analzing their battle strategies, and she was getting eager to relay the information, or help put it into action. So eager, she nearly missed the woman's question, and blinked as forced a quick smile.
"Oh, I'm his girlfriend. And while we're apologizing, sorry for this." Before the woman could respond, the sai had transferred to Evelyn's other hand, her fist went flying, and the punch had blindsided the older woman on the side of the face.
Consequences for punching your boyfriend's assassin mom? Soon to be discovered...
As Mirror's mom went down, the knife went falling, rolled off the fire escape and Evelyn was quick to follow it. With quick movements she dropped from one landing to the next, then took the last leap to the ground where the fighters were still engaged. Bending her knees, she landed, rolled, and swung out with the sai, catching the smoke mutant on the back of the knees before he knew what was happening. He fell backwards, half-smoke, half-human, and a kick to the head stopped him from transitioning back to the former.
Problem with having a smoke form was solidifying to hit someone often left vulnerable openings. Echoes 1. Assassins 0.
The larger mutant was clearly surprised by the turn of events, and his fists clenched threateningly. While she'd thought of a way to help with one figure, this was someone she didn't have a strategy against yet. Evelyn tossed one of her sai back to her free hand and shifted them back into battle position. "What'd I miss?" She said casually to Mirror, heart racing in her throat and her shoulder bleeding slightly.

'Just paying attention isn't enough' was a somewhat direct statement that took Evelyn a little by surprise. Maybe she got used to paying attention being everything, so the idea she needed more almost sounded silly. The echoes were supposed to think for her, right? It seemed like trying to do much more could just be counterproductive. But the more he talked the more she realized what he was saying, and nodded in response. She didn't really know if it was going to help much, but she knew at least what he was aiming for.
"I usually just use whatever is on hand, I guess. I mean, I fight with sai, but at the museum I've picked up some of the other weapons. The echoes make it easier to learn..." She tried explaining. She wasn't sure if she was helping him at all. She just felt like the conversation was at risk of wandering in circles. She paid attention to his next question instead.
"I'll try, but the echos sort of do whatever they want.I can sort of 'herd' them..." It was hard to describe her process, but they buzzed with the slight activity of the earth. She glanced sideways, honing in on the movement. When it shifted, she picked up on it much faster, brow furrowing slightly as she tried to sort out exactly what she was looking at.

Glad you're ok Enders!
Just a note towards everyone I'm in threads with: the homework monster and the deadline overlord have arrived and are sucking away my free time. I'm trying to reply as quickly as possible to things, but I'm a bit more limited this month until this semester ends. If nothing else, aiming for catch up over thanksgiving!

The compliment made Evelyn smile in return, and she felt slight color cover her cheeks for a moment. "I suppose with practice I might have more luck with it, but the echoes have a tendency to focus on everything. I've had them analyze bird poop once, but I've been working on directing them better so that's been nice." She realized it probably sounded odd regarding her powers as a 'they'. But in many ways, the echoes were somewhat separate from her. They didn't always follow her own thought patterns and emotions, so it felt like she was sharing her head with someone super analytically. She wondered what that would sound like to a telepath. The only one she encountered though used to be a voice in someone's head, so he was no help on that matter.
"You might run into him sometime. And you wouldn't be able to miss him if you did. He's a little on the thin side. Practically skin and bones. Well....practically just bones." It was a dumb joke, but it was just one of those days. She took the offer to sit, realizing how nice it was to get off her feet and feeling relieved.
"I'm from New York. Never left the city, honestly. One of these days I might travel more but I never really got the chance to growing up. Toronto has always sounded nice though. I can't say much about the weather though, since this is all I know." She glanced up at the somewhat muggy sky then shrugged.

Getting hit in the head was sort of a problem for Evelyn. With a mental based powers, and the playbacks, trauma meant more than just pain. Trauma meant a full on reboot, and a temporarily scrambled brain. Her knees hit the ground, then her hands, and her mind instantly flooded with memories and information. She couldn't move, she couldn't act. It was not the place you wanted to be when a medieval army was around you.
She could barely make out the sounds of the fight through her own memories. There were flashes of the museum, of getting kidnapped. There were images of paintings, and being at the mansion. There were faces of strangers, and friends, and walking through New York. Her brain was in the middle of a musical she watched when metal clattered on the floor. She heard a voice, but it was hard to focus.
"Brain, reboot. Fine just...processing..." Focusing, focusing. She blinked and dizzily caught sight of the sneering face of the mutant. The destruction around her washed in and out of thought. She reached out for the sai reflexively where it had fallen, and grasped a hand around it. She would be fine for now. This was going to hurt a lot later though.

Reading someone who was reading you was always an interesting experience. It was a hall of mirrors to navigate through and decipher, and each turn you took revealed more about the path, and more about yourself. She was fairly reserved as a person, and knew exactly what people could read if they were looking, so she tended to keep her own body language guarded. But no one was perfect. There was always little slips that could show. That's what she relied on. She saw it now as the faint concern started to leak though. They were direct, perhaps too direct. Most people started with names and introductions. They cut straight to the chase.
Maybe that was a silly thing to do. She was mentally second guessing it as well now.
Reading people while they read you...
>>"Spirits"
Evelyn nodded with a slight smile. The echoes had been leaning that way. Clay acted much like she did, and people who saw ghosts seemed to always look in empty spaces, rather than at people or things. Next time, she should just guess. That would definitely throw someone off their game.
"I figured as much. I have a friend who talks to ghosts. Although his eyes don't give it away. Well, he doesn't really have eyes... Or skin for that matter..." Well if that wasn't an unnerving image, she didn't know what was. She quickly corrected herself. "He's sort of a walking skeleton. He does detective work. I guess that seems to be a think." She remarked.
The stranger noted her job and Evelyn wasn't surprised. She'd probably have taken up a similar profession if she had gone to college of something, rather than just working at the museum. Her family would have hated the attention anyway. "Profiling has always interested me. You can read a lot from people without saying much." The echoes took that ability and amplified it. She wondered what she could have done if she had worked to just study behavior. The idea was appealing in a way.
"I guess most people would have exchanged names by now, wouldn't they? I've always had awful tact, you'll have to excuse me. I'm Evelyn. Resident know-it-all at for the Met. I got the voices end of the deal, you could say. Although I do like the term hyper awareness. It sounds less freaky." She chuckled slightly.

Evelyn was not exactly thrilled by the situation at this point. This was probably the worst way to meet Gawain's mom, but assassins weren't typically your 'invite over to dinner' variety. Probably better than Maya meeting her parents... They both had family issues.
The echoes caught the com falling away though, and that was a relief. She dealt with getting pushed into the wall, hissing what she could back as the facial features changed. At this point she wasn't too taken aback by mutations.
"Gawain had some questions, is sort of a long story. Ran into someone who...met a relative who probably isn't the best apple of the family tree. But he wants to know who his dad is." Well, that was the crash course in things. Below she could still almost follow the sounds of the fight. She was getting more impatient now that she couldn't help.

The echoes picked up on the change in demeanor, the man's eyes following the star towards Gawain. Well, that solved one problem, but there was a new issue at hand. The fight was still going, and now Evelyn was the wrong person standing on the fire escape. She wasn't ready to have this conversation yet, and with both of them sporting coms, private seemed hard to manage. The point was not to tip everyone off of this secret meeting. That hope seemed to be diminishing.
"Us kids kind of had other plans." She flipped the sai in her hand, keeping her battle stance. It was going to be hard to keep up appearances without tipping off the other assassins.

Superhero. Well, that was certainly an idea. Evelyn matched the sneer though and chuckled slightly. She kept confidence in her movements, meanwhile still tracking the fight below. But talking allowed was enough stalling to try to avoid beating Gawain's mom...or...getting beat up by her. "Superhero has a ring to it, but what makes you certain I'm one of the good guys? There are plenty of vigilantes around."
She caught the knife with the sai, and countered with a blow towards the mans legs. He dodged it easily, but the push with her right hand opened up a moment to switch both weapons to the same hand. Backpedaling she managed to fish out another star and send it into the wall next to the fighters. Both sai came back in time to catch the knife. The kick to her shin sure stung though. She focused back on her own fight. They exchanged a few hits, and the knife clipped her shoulder. The sting hurt, but considering what could happen it wasn't worth noting at this point. She wasn't getting anywhere fast in the fight, but the echoes were starting to learn. Which had would get favored, which battle habits she could take advantage of. Training with the x-men had certainly given her echoes a leg up or two.

From the fire escape Evelyn could see Gawain take advantage of the throwing stars, now relieved she'd thought to bring them. Heck, she was relieved she bought them in the first place. Exchanging weapons as gifts had it's merits after all. Her attention had to shift, however, as the figure came jumping down onto the fire escape. Throwing stars went to the pouch for now, sai came out.
"One, two, three. Guess it's a party." She muttered under her breathe. Trying to track all the players took a lot of effort, but she could still see Gawain appear on the taller mutants back. She kept tracking that part of the fight. She had to use the stars effectively though. Trying to talk to anyone at this point would be risky for all of them. Better to eliminate the other mutants, and stall Gawain's....mom... Stalling assassins...that seemed smart.
"So what is this supposed to be, an amateur ambush? Cute." The figure darted forward, and Evelyn flipped one of the sai, deflecting the incoming punch, and swiping with the butt of the weapon. The figure was fast, faster than most people she trained with, and she barely rolled through his legs to avoid an elbow to the face.

The echoes continued to read the stranger, bit by bit studying her reactions. She was definitely open to talking, and there was something almost hopeful in her voice. At least, that was what the echoes were noting. She caught that a lot around mutants. When you were different, you fed off of a sense of familiarity, and you picked up on odd traits, pieces of hope. In a way, you could almost gravitate towards a mutant, because they were drawn towards you. Mutants responded almost like magnets, turning towards each other.
"The museum is quiet most of the time, but I'm probably not the best person to be in customer service. I work mostly with the acquisitions and making sure the displays are historically accurate and set up right." She remarked. "I can relate to having a lot on your mind." She added, echoes buzzing and noting different figures walking past. Information drifted back and forth through her mind, a constant stream of information to think through.
Evelyn pulled her attention back to things as the woman offered the seat. She gave a slight smile and sat, then blinked at the strangers suddenly admission. "You're observant. And right. They did change. That happens when my powers are active." She said casually. The stranger was forward enough. It gave her the courage to try the same, especially when she watched her eyes change color.
"So I doubt there is anyway to ask it without being rude: voices, ghosts, telepathy? I'd know that look anywhere. It's like being tuned into a radio signal no one else is." She flashed a slight smile back so hopefully the woman wouldn't think she was trying to insult her. The voices in your head assumption definitely sounded insulting when you weren't careful.

The conversation took a turn Evelyn hadn't expected. Well, she wasn't sure it was so much a turn as a plunge from awkward to interesting. She was used to being the awkward person, reading people, watching them, unintentionally judging them. But people rarely, if ever, did the same. She met a few observant people, true. Clay and David both seemed to have a knack for that sort of thing. But her own powers were different, and the ways she took in the world were over the top. Piecing together paint on pants and hands would be a natural process for her. Rare, for someone else.
Then there were the motions. The glances at empty spaces, the files she couldn't quite read from here. The echoes buzzed with information, sorting, processing. "I work at the museum. We had a little incident a few weeks back but we've been trying to tidy things up. But I do paint a bit for fun." She babbled, dancing around the subject. The echoes continued to read the woman's facial expressions, the slight tug at the mouth of concern. Her eyes took a turn back to grey and she shook her head. She was rude again.
"I'm sorry, I'm being rude. It's been a long day, I didn't mean to bother you." She flushed with embarrassment.

Evelyn decided she hated being a tactician. Watching as Gawain faced the smoke made her stomach turn in several circles, and part of her didn't enjoy watching. She knew being down there would do little good though. She needed to keep eyes up here if she really wanted to be helpful. If the figure on the roof made a move, she needed to be ready. But for now they seemed to be doing what she was. Apparently having eyes in the sky was part of the game today.
The smoke condensed in a split second, and before she could warn her partner they struck him from behind and knocked him into the light. Gawain was left between the two mutants, which wasn't a great place to be in.
There went stealth. Time for plan B.
Evelyn had already emptied her pouch into her hand metal touching her fingers as she started scurrying across the fire escape, staying close to the wall. At least this building had enough space to move, and places to dodge if needed. The figure on the roof was talking into the com still, but she hadn't been seen yet. If nothing else, Evelyn could handle this. Her sai pressed against her back, creating a form of comfort.
"How about an early Christmas present?" She remarked into the com, and training the echoes on the ground, she aimed for the second mutants shoulder. The throwing star whizzed through the air and struck deep into flesh. The growl of surprise resonated upwards, and the mutant reached up with a glowing fist, yanking the star free and throwing it to the ground.
The reflective surface glittered from where it fell. One down. There was plenty where that came from though. Polished metal flashed through the air, and one more star stuck the lamppost, ricochet and buried itself in the dirt at Gawain's feet. Evelyn was already moving the other direction, even as she caught the figure on the roof shifting.
The fire escape looked like it might get a bit more crowded...
