The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

When you fought with Sai, staying outside of someone else's striking range could be a challenge, especially when they wielded a crowbar and were somewhat bigger than you. By the time you could hit them, they were already within your range, and it felt silly standing and waiting for someone to take a swing at her, rather than trying to at least strike first and faster.
The counter-attack and movement from Saphirus sent one sai backwards, hitting her hip slightly as she tried to maintain her balance.
"You have a longer range... Isn't it possibly you'd stay just out of reach? It'd be a stretch in this instance, but someone with a longer weapon..." She watched until he was close enough, then struck for his vulnerable side, trying her best not to get caught by a counter strike. The echoes were tuning in on his movements, following...studying...
Evelyn caught all kinds of people lurking around the museum from time to time. To the average worker, they looked pleased enough to be there, but there were always signs when it wasn't necessarily someone's original plan of action. Somewhat flushed faces, outfits that don't quite match the atmosphere, shuffling through wallets a little longer than other patrons to find memberships... things like that tipped her off. The woman who arrived today did little more than sigh with relief and casually glance back out the door, but it was enough. Even without a good look at her face, the hyper-aware mutant who was just leaving the front desk to make her rounds took note of it, and filed it away for later.
Sometimes, the most entertaining part of her job was solving the mysteries about the patrons who entered.
Today Evelyn was going to check on a few of the displays that were still in the finishing phases of getting restored after the fiasco that tore apart the museum not too long ago. This sent her unintentionally in the same direction as the woman the echoes noted, and her curiosity spiked again. Most of the regulars here had learned about the museum's damage and navigated through the worst areas at reflex. The woman's reaction to the slight damage of the architecture exhibit would tell another thing or two about her. She couldn't quite place why she looked so familiar though. People always looked familiar to Evelyn, but from the back of the woman's head, she really, REALLY felt like she should know why...
Clipboard in hand, Evelyn glanced down at the notes she had already memorized as she moved. She always felt weird walking in the same direction as someone... It always gave that awkward following vibe.
Evelyn hated running errands for people, but from time to time she had to swallow her pride and accept the position. It seemed the museum was eternally short staffed, what with all the renovations and restoration they had to do lately, so there were less reasons to keep Evelyn locked in the back, and more to send her out to do more useful things. Today, it was a coffee and drink run, and with the light snow and slush she opted to just get the beverages from a nearby convenience store.
Normally, Evelyn wasn't one of the normal people to shop at a store like this. Back when she had more money she might have just got something from the beverage cart or an actual coffee house. But she wasn't going to waste her cash on anything special when she couldn't guarantee her co-workers would pay her back. Her funds were lower then they had been months prior, especially after buying Christmas presents, Mirror's throwing stars included...
Three coffees, two apple juices and an orange juice later, she was ringing out at the counter about to leave. That was when the echoes caught the new group entering the store. They chimed in quietly as her eyes focused on their movements. [Trouble.]
Coffee might have to wait...
After all the chaos with the zodiacs running around and other disagreeable, Evelyn had thankfully opted to keeping her sai close on hand. She was wearing a heavy winter coat, but she could still feel the metal against her back, the bands holding them in place. It wouldn't be too difficult to retrieve them, but no use drawing unneeded attention quite so early. Another figure in the corner of her eye stopped her, and the echoes identified the familiar looking female on the street.
The cashier was already casually moving back from the counter. Even without echoes, it was becoming clear that there was something amiss...
Evelyn nodded slightly as Lana talked, considering the possibilities. She didn't know a lot about genes, but she could certainly research it more in her spare time. The nice thing about having a perfect memory was it made learning new things a lot easier. "I wouldn't ignore the possibility. I haven't studied as much science as I probably should have, but there might be a connection between individuals with similar powers or something of the sort... I know one of my friend's powers seemed to stay in the family and that's not uncommon. I wouldn't know though, I was an only child." She shrugged it off again. Her family history wasn't something she generally liked going into, although anyone who lingered around the city may eventually hear about it. Her parents were fairly vocal about their distaste for her at this point.
The alarm went off though, and that ended the conversation. She glanced at Lana's half-eaten food somewhat guiltily as she realized she had taken up most of the woman's lunch break. She took the card though with a smile. "I'll definitely stay in touch. I always enjoy talking with new people, especially ones who aren't freaked out by my nosiness... The echoes always make me feel like I'm sucking in more information about people than their comfortable with." She admitted somewhat sheepishly.
She stood and fished in her own pocked for a card and handed it back to Lana. It was fairly plane with her name, number, and the word 'Holmes' above it. "Old joke." She explained at the last addition on the card.
The echoes picked up on Gawain's body language, but she didn't let them analyze the interactions too much. This hadn't been the most successful meet up, but at least Gawain got a chance to see his mother and asked what he needed. Once they had said their goodbyes, Jillian her way, and Evelyn rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly.
"Thanks...Figure metal doesn't bust as easily as glass if nothing else..." At the remark of letting Gawain drag her into trouble she chuckled somewhat nervously, images of some of their chaotic adventures flashing through her mind. "I'll try my best." She mentally noted that Gawain would be just as likely to be stuck getting dragged into something stupid by her, but this probably wasn't the best time to argue that. "Nice to meet you too..."
She let Gawain pull her away, but the echoes lingered, watching their backs even as her attention shifted.
Evelyn was somewhat grateful her echoes didn't start later in life. If she suddenly had voices appear in her head she was pretty certain it would have driven her crazy. Just dealing with the playbacks alone was hard enough without taking both on. She couldn't help but envy Lana a little knowing her sister was an adapted though. "Adapteds have been sort of a good news bad news thing for me. They shut off the echoes so that's nice, but they sort of send the playbacks into shock if I sleep in one of their fields. That's an experiment I won't try again." She said with a shake of her head.
"The Mansion is pretty nice. It's a school for mutants, and some people live there, others just take classes and stuff. You might find it interesting. I never really expected to settle in there but it grew on me. If you ever want a tour they're more than happy to show you around. I'm not really that great at tours, admittedly." She chuckled slightly.
The echoes got distracted slightly by a passing dog, analyzing the breed, collar behavior...she turned back to Lana. "If you get the time though it's worth checking out. Even if you just want to meet some of the other mutants in the area."
Evelyn didn't take much encouragement to grab onto Carrick, trying to be careful so she didn't accidentally pull a feather out or something. At first it was hard to relax. She kept having flickers of memories of falling and the terrifying sensation that swam through her stomach. But Carrick wasn't trying to kill her, and he wasn't an angry cat mutant she pissed off. She'd be fine.
She hoped.
As they shot for buildings and traffic, she held a little tighter for a moment then forced herself to relax. Her hand hold became less of a death grip, and her muscles unclenched slightly for the moment.
He was angry, she was angry. There was a lot of anger buzzing around in the room. Not that it was anyone's fault, really, they just saw things differently. Evelyn didn't necessarily think that being selfish was a bad thing. She just thought everyone had to have reasons for what they did, and she didn't entirely believe in something being completely 'selfless'. The military considered training of soldiers 'reprogramming' for such reasons. Working around the morals of an individual, building on survival instincts, picking and choosing which traits would better the group as a whole in battle. With the echoes, she saw things in many shades of gray. Every good guy had a little bad to them. Every bad guy had a little good. She wondered if she would ever really see eye to eye with Saphirus, but she wasn't here to compare ideologies and moral standing. She was here to train, and that's what kept her face straight even as he analyzed her fighting.
"Your footwork is off... It's got creativity behind it, but you don't think far enough ahead. As a mutant without a physical ability, you will always be at a disadvantage; because of this, I suggest wearing down your opponent with careful strikes, and keeping outside of their range if possible."
That was fair advice, and she let the echoes process it. It was hard to think ahead with the echoes at times, mostly because they were always so focused on the 'now'. Learning to think ahead would take more training, and further studying of her own habits, her opponents battle instincts, and further training in sparing in general. Knowing how someone would respond to a blow wasn't impossible: it would just take trial and error.
Starting with Saphirus' 'game', however, seemed like a risky way to learn. If she wasn't already irritated with the x-man, she might have protested the idea. and the risks involved. But Saphirus was challenging her, jabbing at her pride, and in many ways, she was taking the bait. She wanted to prove she deserved to be an x-men. She wanted to prove, regardless of her reasoning, she could be useful, and could help people. But letting the danger room convince her she was dying... She had no idea what that could do when her powers were involved.
With a slight shrug she brushed aside her concerns though, and flipped both one sai then the second into a more battle-ready hold without glancing at them. "Fine, I'll play your 'game'." She said, and without waiting she darted forward, echoes focused on his crowbar wielding hand. One sai flashed out towards his weaker leg, the other stayed on guard to deflect any counter attack.

Her assessment was quickly dismissed, and Evelyn felt slightly insulted by it. True, he said she was clever, but he also turned the conversation in a new direction. It was clear he thought there were selfish motives for her being part of the x-men, but who was to say being heroic wasn't selfish, in some way? People liked helping others, but why? Generally, it was for those warm fuzzies that came when giving someone a hand, saving someone's life. Being heroic was about being the hero, being the good guy. Was it so wrong that she wasn't deceiving herself into trying to be that?
"I think it's silly to pretend that my goals, like anyone elses, aren't selfish in someone way. Someone who wants to be a hero, and someone who wants to better the world still wants to do it for their own reasons. They want to feel like a good person. They want to feel the satisfaction of doing what's right.
I'm not just trying to be a 'hero'. I just want to be able to do something if I can. I don't want to watch people get injured, and be powerless to stop it. I think you can be selfish and self-less at the same time. I think I can put myself in harms way, while still doing it for my own reasons." She responded, lifting her chin slightly and staring back at him. She wasn't afraid of him, gruff and disagreeable as he was. People all wore masks, and even his had cracks she could see slivers through.
"I want this, and whether or not you agree with me won't change that. Regardless of who chose me as a trainee, I don't take this lightly, and that's why I'm not going to try to be someone I'm not. I can piece together all kinds of polished reasons to do what I do, but in the end I'm just like everyone else, and I'm a little bit selfish. I want to help people because it'll make myself better in the end."
Evelyn collected all the throwing stars, and tucked the pouch back into her pocket. She snuck away for a moment to collect their bag, and Gawain and his mom were sitting and talking still when she returned. She didn't know how to really be polite and vigilant at the same time. Tact was never something she mastered, but she tried, and perhaps that was what counted. It was hard to be super concerned with manners when you had unconscious bodies and a clock ticking away on the conversation. Fifteen minutes wasn't much, but it was enough to at least help Gawain learn what he needed.
Brood of evil teleporters.... Her powers suddenly seemed quite tame.
[Stirring figure. The echoes announced, and Evelyn moved to kneel next to the beefy mutant, quickly finding the pressure point on his neck. The echoes directed her, and with some adjustment her gloved fingers against his neck knocked him back out. Pressure points were freaky business... But sometimes they were still useful.

Being around Clay always made Evelyn wish she could see dead people, although part of her was sure she would instantly regret it if she ever could. The echoes were distracting enough without having to deal with spirits as well. Would the echoes analyze the dead people? That would open up a whole new can of worms... But on the other hand, she had to wonder what she was missing, which was an odd experience. She was used to being a know it all, but now she was learning there was more out there she couldn't see or process. At least spirits couldn't do anything to the living, so all she was missing was bits of information. She couldn't be greedy in the end.
"The curious side of me wonders what it would be like, but I figure my head is crowded enough without having extra people around to process..." She concluded out loud.
>>"I'd love to see the Lion King."
"You should make it a goal. I may be biased but I still think it's one of the most wonderful Broadway shows out there... Phantom of the Opera wasn't bad, and I enjoyed Marry Poppins, but Lion King is a classic... Wicked is fun though.... Sorry, I'm rambling." Her mind trailed off and she brought herself back to the conversation at hand.
"I was born with the echoes, so I guess I've done decently coping with them. But there is no off button, so that gets annoying. It's like having constant chatter in your head no one can hear. When I was younger people would give me a hard time about it, and my parents tried to keep it under wraps. It's gotten better after being at the Mansion though." She remarked thoughtfully.

Things turned into a blur, one Evelyn would have taken the time to reevaluate, if she could. Not that it mattered much at this point in time. The echoes would remember every detail later whether she wanted them to or not. After knocking over the biker, Evelyn barely managed to free herself from his grip, as a nearby kid turned into an enormous stuffed tiger. The girl who approached her earlier got into a scuffle with someone else.
This party was definitely not what she signed up for. She clenched and unclenched her hands, wishing she had a better weapon to fight with. She scooped up a busted candlestick instead, and tried not to cringe at the damage being caused. This had to be stopped...
There was a cry from by the elevator, and Evelyn turned to see the laughing figure as the elevator went down.
Someone asked if she was alright, Evelyn blinked and nodded. "I'm fine, got a few more things to take care of though." She remarked and without giving more information took off at a dart for the stairwell. Elevators weren't particularly fast, and the echoes knew which direction they were going. To the basement it was. Because every fight in a haunted house should end in a basement, right?
Scrambling to a stop just outside the elevator, Evelyn tried to calm her breathe as the door pinged open.

Once the echoes started functioning again, they quickly alerted Evelyn to her bleeding head. It was nothing bad at the moment, but she still wasn't sure what lasting effects a concussion could have on her powers. She'd rather not learn that at this point, and wondered if DocProf could fix that if it happened... she realized she wasn't completely sure what extent his powers worked. He couldn't undo blood loss, she knew at least that much. She'd rather not experiment with the rest.
>>"You sound like a computer."
Evelyn stuck out her tongue as she got to her feet, trying to ignore her turning stomach for the moment "My powers work like a computer so that shouldn't be so much of a surprise." She remarked and picked back up the sai where they had fallen. "Playbacks have stopped though. Go kick his ass." She grumbled, and turned to keep watch on her surroundings more.
The damaged art turned her stomach all over again.

You know those conversations where you somehow get involved in them, then a few minutes or so in, you wonder if you SHOULD be involved in them? This was one of those situations. Evelyn came here to help Gawain make contact with his mother, but she almost felt like she was eavesdropping on the mother and her son. The two of them had been in some awkward situations together, sure. Heck, the interactions with her own parents had been a little awkward. But she still wasn't sure exactly what to say during this chat.
She glanced at the downed figures to make sure they stayed down, put her sai away and collected throwing stars while they talked.
The echoes slowly took in their surrounding, studying the alley and making sure there were no more surprises. Without having to fight at the same time, she could let them take in more of her surroundings, even while listening to the conversation.

Using the echoes excessively was difficult, especially while trying to fight at the same time. It was like trying to do complicated math while painting a picture at the same time. Eventually the focus shifted one direction or the other. Unfortunately, for Evelyn, the 'other' turned out to be the fight, and she nearly missed the shadow mutant about to take her out.
The knife from Gawain's mom solved that problem. Her expression was somewhat torn between relieved and dreading. "So, we didn't get far talking... just the basic you have questions speel." She quickly told Gawain, and then glanced back to Jillian. "And sorry again, about that." She motioned to Jillian's face, hoping there would be no hard feelings about the punch. This wasn't exactly the way she wanted to meet anyone's parents.
