The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Wandering around the mansion in the dark was one thing. Being outside like this threw out other disadvantages. Furniture didn't change the way plants did. Weather didn't make it shift or sway, and animal and insect life was inconsistent and threw in other variables. Hearing noises was one thing, but knowing where exactly it was coming from and if it posed a danger was another. She thought she saw a flash of fur, or was it hair? The dim silhouette was hard to make out. She turned, pausing, the echoes chattering about everything from the stars to the presence approaching. Sensing, doubting...wondering.
And then the voice made her jump and her fist went flying in self-defense. A hand missed her shoulder and touched her arm instead. For Evelyn, it only gave her information about the texture of the touch that was definitely not normal human skin.
For Sara, it would be a sudden burst of information, like the world suddenly screamed "let their be voices!"

At first, Evelyn thought maybe the echoes were just making stuff up. Maybe her paranoia was just giving her mixed signals or something. But then there was the branch moving, and that seemed...wrong. She listened, then slowly stood and turned, trying to identify the movement. As cliche as it felt, she called out into the trees.
"Anyone there?" If it was an intruder, it wasn't likely they'd respond anyway. But kids were known to sneak around from time to time, and they usually fessed up when someone caught them. Lack of response or clumsy attempt at a getaway would tell her how amateur the person was. If someone was really there.

Maybe it was stress, or lack of sleep, but it took Evelyn longer to sense someone was following her than she really felt comfortable about. One minutes she was considering the possibility of putting squirrels in comas, then the echoes buzzed about the slightest movement in one of the trees. She was still on the mansion grounds, so she didn't feel too worried... yet.
Then again, she did give the last intruder an unwelcomed bath via sprinklers, so there was no telling what could happen out here.
Slowly getting back to her feet, she paused and tried to identify the intruder. The echoes clamored, working to aid her. For the first time since their new abilities arrived, she welcomed the noise.

Evelyn was sort of having a crisis. A people crisis. Not a "people are driving me insane" crisis" or a "I just need some space" crisis. It was more of a "I'm putting voices in peoples head" sort of crisis. Mirror had been pretty understanding about it and tried to keep her from freaking out, but knowing kissing your girlfriend could possibly invade their head with your memories made things a little tense. It had been bad enough the images showed Sylar how scary he was, and sure, there were some training advantages to sharing her brain a little. But she felt like a mental case enough without worrying who she was sharing her brain with. Frickin' echoes. Frickin' brain. Frickin' powers.
So she went for a walk to try and unwind.
As she moved through the trees, she tried to relax. It wasn't so bad, really. She wasn't like, randomly giving kids echoes who walked past her in the hall or something like that. At least she wasn't hearing THEIR thoughts. That would be a whole new level of crazy. But she felt...invasive. She already knew the echoes were nosy, but now everyone else could hear it. When the echoes commented on how someone clearly hadn't done their laundry in 5 days, she wouldn't take it personal. It was just an observation. But heaven forbid THEY hear her thinking that. What was she supposed to say? It wasn't me, it was my powers?
She zig zagged around trees. Goodness knows what other damage they could do. She needed turtlenecks. And gloves. And warning lights.
Twisting the sai in her hands, she looked for something to focus on. Maybe she could train out here and make it worthwhile. Just de-stress, unwind. And best of all, there were no people. No one would be broken by her brain today.
Unless it worked on squirrels....holycrap did echoes work on squirrels?
She sat down and tried to remember to breathe. The echoes continued happily chattering in the robotic manner that clearly said they didn't give a crap how much trouble they caused.

There were flickers of awareness. A sense of cold, movement, an approaching attacker. But the memories were smothering her, dragging her through time. Training sessions. Late nights. Dumb date nights. Anger. She saw a face, walking down an alley, but that didn't feel familiar. It didn't feel like a memory. But then it was gone, a ghost as the past took over. She couldn't defend herself. Her powers were going to get her killed.
She shut her eyes. The cold was still there. It lingered on the edges of the memories as the echoes struggled to make sense of it. [Sam.] Yes. Sam was dead, and they couldn't even properly kill the guy who did it.
Dumb echoes. Dumb noise. Frickin' vibrations breaking her frickin' brain.
If Sam was alive, she would have killed him. As if somehow, this was all his fault.
The final thought vanished as she slumped into darkness where the echoes faded, and only the playbacks remained.

While she could understand how walking through mirrors felt, shifting genders was something she could never relate to. And if she ever could, that would take a bit more processing to deal with. She felt a slight smile for a moment, then relaxed in Gawain's hold. She shrugged slightly at the question.
"It takes...sorting. I have to learn to listen to what's the most important. It's like seeing. While you can see a street and cars and people walking past, and objects on the sidewalk, things in the sky all at the same time, you aren't really looking at all of it. You let yourself focus. If you're crossing the street, you glance for cars. If you're talking to a friend, you focus on their face. The echoes just need to be focused. You train your brain to 'look' like you train your eyes, I guess." She chewed her lip wondering if that made any sense It wounded a lot better in her head.
"The echoes are...messy, I guess. They take a lot of information and dump it all in my head. It's my job to keep it pushed into piles or boxes and deicde what to pay attention to." Easy in theory, harder in execution. The echoes really wanted her to know the foxsquirrel had knocked her color pencils off the desk. She had no intention of cleaning them up now.

Evelyn slowly accepted Gawain's hand again, waiting, wondering. For once, the echeos sounded louder than normal. She was processing all the information, wondering how Mirror was seeing it. Useless information shifted one way, like curtain rod rings and moved pieces of paper, while important things like emotions and facial expressions came towards the forefront. She was suddenly aware of how exhausted she felt. And also, in some ways relieved.
"No one ever knew..." She muttered suddenly, looking up at the ceiling and shutting her eyes for a second. "Nothing I said to explain my powers could really help someone understand what it felt like. Even if it takes a lot of training, I guess part of me is...grateful for that much. Is it dumb that part of me is glad I can share it? Part of me feels guilty, and scared... I don't want anyone else to go through things like I do...but in a way, it feels like I can share part of the burden..." She squeezed his hand, wondering how weird it must be. She must look like a nutcase. It must sound like a circus with all the echoes chattered all the time. She tried to corral them, cut off the 'feed'. But it was impossible to tell if it did anything. She couldn't feel the connection. The information just passed by quietly.

Contagious powers...because that wasn't a terrifying phrase at all. The x-team could all have voices in their heads. While it was true, it could be useful on the field, there was also the risky possibility of putting one of her teammates in a coma or something equally frightening. She barely kept her sanity sometimes, and she lived with the voices. She was scared. Gawain didn't yank away from the physical contact despite all the information she knew he must be getting. She accepted the kiss. trying to smile despite how rattling it was.
"You're dealing with this a lot better than I am... I guess I just...know what's in my head. I don't want to put you through that... Some of the memories are good, but..." A rush of images shot through her head. Getting mugged, the riots, thinking CS was dead. She yanked away from Gawain quickly, breaking the contact before too many of the memories invaded. "I'm sorry, I..." She shut her eyes, focusing on better things. Dates, work, paintings... Anything to clear her thoughts. "If it's going to stay like this, I need to learn how to control it. constantly sharing information would suck... Maybe this time my powers will come with an off switch..." She could hope, right?

Try not to freak out, but I think I'm having echoes now.
Frickin...
"Trying not to...not sure if I'm succeeding." Evelyn whispered. But the panic was starting to rise. It wasn't just the playbacks. It was the echoes too. What was going to happen in the future? One touch and they were seeing her memories, hearing her echoes. The information was everywhere, like a monsoon constantly battering down on her. And now it was spreading.
Try not to panic... She felt like she was already past panic...But she shut her eyes and tried to calm down. She had to focus on something positive before she came unraveled.
"Guess the echoes would at least be useful in a fight or something... not the worst thing to share..." Her voice squeaked slightly. The echoes chimed, pointing out the doubt in her voice. They sliced open her emotions and laid everything out for Gawain to see.

Evelyn felt her shoulders sense slightly as Gawain moved and pulled her closer, but he didn't seem to act differently, so she relaxed. She had no way of knowing when or how her powers would do what they did... It was an unwelcome sensation of sharing. Right now it was a playback, but what about the echoes? She knew how to deal with the voices in her head, but she didn't want to see what they could do to someone else. Especially someone she cared about.
"Last time my powers decided to change, I got the playbacks. I find it hard to hope that this could be a good thing..." She swallowed. The echoes were sifting through information casually now: pointing out drawings, things that had moved in the night, some new damage to the curtains her foxsquirrel has created before sneaking off somewhere else.

A sewer...voices...running...
Evelyn shut her eyes for a moment and tried to stay calm. But the terror in that memory was still strong, and accompanied by a new fear. Somehow, people were seeing her playbacks. First Sylar, now Mirror... It wasn't just a fluke. And it wasn't Sylar who caused it to happen. The only thing worse than seeing the images herself was knowing she was forcing them on someone else.
"It was a playback..." She nodded finally, clearing the images from her head and moving back over to the bed, sinking into it and burying her head in her hands. "And I don't know how you saw it, but it's...it's happened once before. I thought...I hoped...I don't want to force anyone to feel that." The echoes were picking up on Gawain's emotions: his confusion, and then the effects of the actual playback working through him. It was one thing to casually mention one of her friends tried to eat her. It was another to have him know just how close the incident had come...and how much it scared her.

Evelyn's thoughts were still scrambled from sleep, and the images were still filtering through her head. Fear, panic, adrenaline...it all raced through her body in intense amounts. Gawain's question didn't make sense at first, and she leaned against the wall, trying to smother the fear still trapped inside her.
"What was...?" She stared back at him, and then other memories pushed forward. Sylar's look of horror, commenting on what he had seen. She clung to the wall for support. Her legs felt weak. "What did you see?" She whispered suddenly. The fear from the playback was pinching into a new type of anxiety.

Sleeping for Evelyn didn't really feel much like sleeping at all. The process was the same: shut your eyes, let the darkness claim you, and the lingering feeling of drowsiness took over. But the results were far different past that point. Where dreams would start, memories took over, with the clarity and crispness it was like waking back up in the past. The fear, the happiness, the pain... every detail was clear, strong...inescapable. Sometimes it was happy. On nights like tonight... she was strongly aware of why she hated to sleep.
The memory of a late night at work shifted, and suddenly, she was walking through sewers. She could sense something was wrong, even before the voice echoed through the tunnels. ""Food..."" the sound echoed, she was cornered...she shouldn't have come down here after all.
Even with Gawain's arm around her, Evelyn trembled. As the memory progressed, the fear started to overwhelm her. There was no getting away, no leaving the terror. No shutting down the images once they started. However, this time, something changed.
As Gawain touched her arm, the contact opened a feed, dragging him into the playback with her. The voices, the smells, and the fear...
His claws tore against the ground, the sound of blades carving chunks of stone as he ran echoing into the dark. He'd be upon her in no time, her top speed probably half of what his was. He was behind her, closing the distance every second. "Run Evelyn...run..." He whispered from behind her, taunting her as he prepared to catch her again. [...]
For a normal person, getting chased through the sewers by a monster would be scary enough. For Evelyn, it was tenfold. Her echoes brought everything to life, and gave in a new dimension. In the few seconds it took to run, the pace of her thoughts pointed out every tiny detail of her pursuer. Every impact of blade to rock, every slice of the earth, every satisfied smirk. The voice, with it's taunting nature and sinister edge. She glanced back, eyes taking in the form almost upon her. It didn't look like the mutant kid she knew. It was every essence of the sewer monster rumors spoke of. Hungry, animal, taking pride in his hunt. She was just a dumb girl whose curiosity landed was becoming her undoing.
Her foot clipped one of the rocks he dislodged earlier and she went crashing to the ground with a painful slam. It stung her legs, ripped a hole in the knee of her jeans and would reveal a number of stunning bruises in the morning. Unless he killed her. Then those bruises would never appear.
She lifted her head, light light of the exit just up ahead. She could still see the bag with the food she had brought, still feel the rungs of the ladder in her memories. She tried getting to her feet but she was too slow, too late.
He was there.
With a scream she sat up, scrambling out of bed in a disoriented crash from one reality to another.

Evelyn didn't know what had happened, but the guilt was wresting in her gut all the same. Somehow, she had shown Sylar how frightening he was, and all her words, all her efforts to comfort him vanished in a puff of smoke. For once, she had cursed someone with an image they couldn't forget. That seemed to hurt more than any injury he had ever inflicted on her. She slowly stepped away, doubting herself. Maybe he was a monster, but she felt like she had done something just as harmful. She looked at the ground, trying to drown out his words.
"I'm sorry, Sylar. I don't know... I wish I could take it back... Of all the things you could have seen..." The fear was gone, and the grief was building. Once more, she caused more trouble than good it seemed.
You need a plan for me...
She shook her head, biting her lip. "I don't want a plan. I now what it looks like, but I can't think of you that way. I can't imagine hurting you. I would never forgive myself... I just...I can't." Her words were becoming disjointed again, this time driven by her emotional struggle. She didn't want to think of this. She hated what was happening.

Evelyn couldn't process the pain. She could feel it linger on the edges of mind but everything else was burying it. Images of the past weeks. Memories of the past years. Sewer monsters, cookie monsters, aliens, riots...She felt frozen by the information, vaguely aware she should move, get out of the way. For a second she felt herself shielded by Gawain and saw the glint of broken glass hitting the ground. The echoes chirped weekly. [Lack of auditory feedback. Hearing=damaged.] She shut her eyes and whimpered, trying to focus. The world felt like it was spinning. Up above, there was movement as Leo yanked the sai out and tossed it to the ground. He was prowling closer, sensing the weakened prey. Maybe he was readying to roar again. Maybe he'd rather finish this off by hand.
Evelyn fumbled for her remaining sai, clutching it in her hand as she tried to stand. He killed CS. That memory wouldn't go away. She tried to hold onto the rage to bring back clarity, focusing on the approaching target. She couldn't give Mirror instructions. Her echoes couldn't even do that much now. It was close quarters combat now, this should be better. But as the mutant swung, she knew it wouldn't be the case. She ducked, stumbled, and swung wildly with the weapon. It barely scratch his side before a fist came sailing and slammed into the side of her head.
She dropped, and the playbacks took over. She didn't even see the next attack that sailed towards her. The echoes were dragging her back through time, away from the anger and the pain. Away from Gawain.
There was a flicker of thought, guilt. Then that was buried in the information as well.
