The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

The time has come to make nominations for August's Mutant of the Month competition! We are a bit late getting started this month, but I think you still have enough time to finish up the nominations by the first of September.
Please write a short description telling how you believe your nominee has stepped up this month to contribute to the site. Think of those who have gone above and beyond their norm to achieve new heights in August. Leave links to the amazing things they have written recently so we can all see how amazing they are!
Seconding nominations is not necessary (nor is it necessarily prohibited.)
"If you never say your name out loud to anyone, they can never ever call you by it."
HISTORY - Lori comes from your typical American home: she was born into a family of two loving parents who then became bitter and divorced. Lori's mother has gone on to remarry and start a whole new family, and Lori's father... well, he never did recover. Currently on the run from the police for one too many misdemeanors, Lori's dad left her the only thing bought and paid for, the trailer he'd lived in since Lori's mother kicked him out.
After ferreting out the Sanctuary's dark secret about the Order and Haywire, naturally Lori wanted to be on the winning team. She lived for a time partly in the trailer and partly at the Sanctuary. It was an arrangement that helped her keep her boyfriends from crossing paths. But nothing that good can last forever. After a knock down drag out fight between Jacen, Lori, and Mars. Jacen left and Lori, on Mars' advice, decided to get Jacen the one gift he would never think to get himself... resolution.
While in Florida, Lori discovered the truth about Jacen's parents' deaths, human adaptation, a federal program with a "one of us, one of them" policy, and a machine meant to help locate and destroy the Adapteds. Naturally, information comes at a cost.
POWERS - Lori has the power to manipulate and control magnetic fields as well as the ability to absorb and control electricity. Her magnetic manipulation results in what could be mistaken as a clumsy telekinesis that only applies to ferrous metal materials. Lori most often utilizes her ability to absorb electricity to fuel her body's battery. Her power level is directly related to how confident or powerful she feels. Her favored attack is the "zap nap" a touch based attack that delivers a powerful shock, straight from her power level to the opponent, to leave her adversary wriggling on the floor or unconscious and foaming at the mouth.
A lesser known and lesser explored venue of Lori's power is a magnetic based form of levitation.
POSTS TO SEE: Desperate Times - Lori meets Bacchus Brickson AKA Giants Bane in the vault of a bank that they just both happen to want to rob. Lori employs him to carry the cash, help her send a message and pay a debt, and then lures him back to her place where she proceeds to knock him out and take most of the cash. Desperate to recharge, and celebrate, she summons a bolt of lightning that sends her on a over-charged electric trip through the city. Meanwhile, she leaves Bacchus to rot, unconscious in her bath tub, while her apartment burns down around him. This is the official end of Lori trying to be a normal human... All in all, a pretty good day.
Flawless (solo) - In the search for why Lori's mother left one perfectly okay family to start another one, Lori finds and torments her mom's psychiatrist into revealing his secrets... and some of her own.
Null and Void - "Jacen, meet Mars, he's my favorite book. Mars, meet Jacen.... he's special." Lori's two love interests meet and then fight. And after Jacen storms off in a tizzy to his other girlfriend, Mars and Lori go out for Chinese.

I put the names in a proverbial hat (aka wrote them in a list), rolled a proverbial 10 sided dice (aka used this random number generator), and selected some proverbial volunteers (aka victims) to be struck by the last 3 non-contagious Haywire samples during the brawl. The winners are:
*drum roll*
Cold Steel, Meld, and Lori.
Syn will be the one administering these Haywire samples after the battle has already gotten going. Since she is busy inside the building with Sebastian and Seizure at the moment, feel free to keep going with the brawl thread until she can get there.
For those of you who were selected, keep in mind the three provisions listed above and check out the examples of what happened last time this stuff was used if you need ideas.
For those of you who will not be affected, keep in mind that these three individuals will now be very difficult to deal with in any way. Don't expect to be able to stop them with a single attack.

Directions: It's very simple. Choose the answer from each category that best shows how your character feels about a topic. Then add up the points!
[/u][/b]
I wouldn't hurt a mosquito, even if he bit me and gave me West Nile Virus. (+1)
I might kill in self defense or by accident, and I'd feel really bad afterwards. (+0.5)
In the heat of passion or rage I might kill someone. (+0)
I'm cold and calculating when I plan my murders. (-0.5)
Killing is fun! (-1)
Helping others:
If I found my mortal enemy injured on the side of the road I would bandage him up, nurse him back to health, and give him a tasty plate of cookies to eat on the way home. I wouldn't even poison them. (+1)
I'd help a stranger out of a jam because it is the right thing to do. (+0.5)
I'd help a stranger out if I thought there might be something in it for me. (+0)
I'd help out a friend, but woe for the injured stranger on the side of the road; I could care less. (-0.5)
If someone was lying on the side of a road, I'd laugh and throw sticks at them. If it was someone I knew, I'd take pictures. (-1)
Stealing:
I'd never take something that wasn't mine. If I found a wallet on the street, I'd check inside only to find out the persons address and hand deliver it to their door. (+1)
I wouldn't steal, but if I found $20 on the side of the road, I wouldn't feel bad about keeping it. (+0.5)
As long as you don't steal from me, I don't care. (+0)
I'm a “frequent stopping point in the natural migratory path of the common wallet.” (-0.5) (quoted from Calley's book, which is awesome by the way)
Let's knock out Fort Knox! (-1)
Politics:
I'd like to help the world become a better place. (+1)
I'll leave it to someone else to solve the world's problems. (+0)
I can live with things the way they are. (+0)
I'd like to see mutants/humans rule. I might even help tip the balance the way I want it to go (-0.5)
I plan to take over the world and shape it to my liking. (-1)
Genocide:
I'd do anything to stop mass murders. (+1)
Let each side fend for themselves. (+0.5)
A small number of deaths for the greater good is better than many purposeless deaths. (+0)
I'm all in favor of humans or mutants being completely wiped out. (-0.5)
I'd like to help with the slaughter. (-1)
Taxes:
My state overpaid me on my tax refund, so I paid them back or donated the excess to a local charity. (+1)
Taxes are my civil duty. I pay them because they go towards improving roads and schools and other things like that. (+0.5)
Meh. Tax evasion is too much work, I'll just pay. (+0)
I ain't paying the government nothin'. (-0.5)
I set up a fraudulent tax business to rip off others (-1)
Do you think that I have to include income from that bank robbery on my taxable income? If anything, the government should be paying me back for liberating those funds in order to help out the slow economy. (-1)
Driving:
I obey all traffic laws, even while riding my bicycle. (+1)
I occasionally speed. (+0.5)
I don't mind cutting someone off if it will get me there faster. If you aren't a little aggressive you aren't going to get anywhere on these NYC streets. (+0)
They're more like traffic suggestions. Now I suggest you get out of my way. (-0.5)
After I blow your doors off like you're standing still, I throw my cigarette butt out the window. I hope it lands in your car and starts your leather seats on fire. (-1)
Charity:
I donate my time and money to help those less fortunate than me. (+1)
I buy cookies and magazine subscriptions from the cute little kids that come to my door. They're so cute when they want to help save the whales. (+0.5) (Buying cookies only from Katrina is only +0)
I worked hard for my money, so others should work if they want some too. (+0)
My community service is court ordered. (-0.5)
I rob from the rich and give to the poor – poor me. (-1)
Animals:
I carry protest signs in front of puppy mills, I only eat organic eggs laid by free range chickens, and I'll probably grow up to be a crazy cat lady. (+1)
I take good care of my pet and make sure he has a good life. (+0.5)
My goldfish died, but I don't think it was my fault. (+0)
If your dog growls at me I'll kick it to show it who's boss. I might kick it anyway, just in case. (-0.5)
I set fire to puppy mills and my favorite part about Zelda is killing the chickens. (-1)
Violence:
Violence is never the answer. Let's talk out our differences and try to reach a compromise. (+1)
I would use weapons or my powers to incapacitate an attacker. (+0.5)
Better him than me. (+0)
Violence can be a useful tool to help me achieve my goals. (-0.5)
If somethin' ain't bleedin', somethin' ain't right with the world. (-1)
[/ul]
Add up your score to find your character's rating on the good / evil scale. You've probably figured out that a -10 is about as evil as you can get. A +10 is practically saintly. A zero means you're neutral.

After some discussion, the moderators have decided to allow the Order to use 3 of their non contagious haywire samples in the brawl outside of King Pharmaceuticals. It makes sense that they would use it, and they are outnumbered, so it should make things a little more even.
To use the samples, the players that are affected must agree to the following conditions:
3) No claiming that the physical effects are in their system long after this. Mental scaring is fine. No "relapses" like a bad LSD trip years later, though. Once you'd had Haywire once, it does NOT reoccur spontaneously in you anytime afterwards.[/ul] If you are interested in being one of the Order volunteers to take the virus, or a victim from one of the other teams, please sign up below. On Monday June 29, we will randomly select the three people out of the ones that have signed up.

The day began, as it had on so many days previously, with birdsong. Even before the sky began to lighten from black to dark blue the first few trills and tweets began. Soon the relative silence of the night was filled with twittering. For the birds, there was a busy day ahead. The chicks had hatched and were hungrier than ever and recent dry spells meant shortages of both worms and mosquitoes. The day began early when their were little beaks to be fed.
When the birds first awoke, most humans and mutants were still asleep and dreaming. On this particular night, many of them shared similar dreams full of portents of a possible future. For some inexplicable reason the dreams were especially long and especially vivid, however, once the bright morning sun began its quotidian climb and the dreamers were wrested from their sleep by the light or by their alarm clocks the dreams faded from memory just as quickly as normal dreams would fade.
A few dreamers who had been especially touched by something in their dreams remembered one or two particularly meaningful parts of their night's vision, but others were left simply with the barest impression of what they had been dreaming in the last moments before they awoke.
Two mutants in particular had met each other bright and early for an appointment, both still brooding over what they remembered from their peculiar dreams. When they found out that both of their dreams had been of a similar nature and that both dreams had seemed to be warnings, they decided the coincidence was too great and they must do something about it.
And so it came about that the Sanctuary healer and the red bishop of the Order made their way into King Pharmaceuticals with the goal of destroying samples of tissue and DNA that had been collected from the mutant Jacquelyn Guy, code named Haywire. Shortly after their entry into the building, the Order got wind of what was happening and began to converge upon the pharmaceutical company with which they were affiliated. Anticipating trouble, Sebastian had already called the leader of the Kabal who was his protégé in the arts of healing and requested backup. The young leader, remembering that one of the leaders of the X-men had once offered to help him if he needed it, called Cold Steel and asked him to send what aid he could. By the time the X-men and Kabal members had arrived, the Order was already in place and ready to fight to protect what they believed was rightfully theirs.
--
This thread is open to X-men, Kabal members, and the Order for the purpose of a brawl. For this fight the Kabal and X-men are acting as allies. There is no posting order, but please be considerate of not leaving others behind as you post. It is acceptable and encouraged to start a parallel thread linking back to this one if you'd like to break off into a smaller thread that moves at more your own pace.
Sebastian and Seizure are working on the actual destroying of the haywire samples in this thread. They hope that the X-men and Kabal can keep the Order occupied long enough for them to find all the samples.
If you have any questions, please contact a moderator.

Remember, this poll is going a little late this month. It's closing on the 18th instead of the 15th this month. You can, however, start nominating people for June already. Good luck everyone!

TETSUYA SHINBO aka SHARD
Bring on the laser deathbots!
HISTORY - Shin was born in Kyoto, Japan. He grew alongside a doting sister, training under various masters in his formative years. They did their best to temper his temper, but ultimately failed. He moved to New York at the age of 16, his same old goofy self. During his time in New York, he fell into the wrong crowds. He competed in underground fighting challenges, and made his living in the boxing ring. This all ended when he was exposed as a mutant. In a flash, he alienated himself from that world. Leaving it behind, he found the Xavier Mansion and a new resolve.
During the first few weeks at the Xavier mansion, he met several students that shaped his life. Among them was a white-haired book store employee named Ghost. On his way to her book store one day, an anti-mutant riot broke out. He did his best to quell it and protect the people in the store, but in the end, all he could do was help everyone in the store to safety. The rioters tore down Full Circle. His view of humanity was tarnished. As he talked with others, and rebuilt it, the resolve eventually grew. He decided to join the X-men, to give the world a good face for mutants, and to try and prevent hate crimes like that from happening to innocent people ever again. When the Full Circle reopened, he made a point to work there and promote mutant-human relations alongside his friends.
POWERS - Shin's Profile Shin can summon and control a storm of multi-colored razor-sharp triangular barriers approximately 1” to 3” in width. This control allows him to create shapes from the shards. While at times, his power makes it seem as if the strategic possibilities are endless, shards are very sharp, and his offense often acts as a double-edged sword.
POSTS TO SEE:
Broken Glass - Shin's first danger room session pits him against a mountain. It's a long way up from here.
Becoming a Hero in a Shard-like Manner - Shin goes through tryouts for the position of X-men trainee. Bring on the laser deathbots, the stalkers, and bring down some trees! An arrow points to the exit, but will they follow it? Who knows!?
Rise of the Revolving Doors - The grand re-opening of Full Circle book store. Shin's patience is boundless when a fight breaks out.
The Badger Says Hello - A gripping tale of the Badger's blue origin. Shin discusses the values of science fiction literature with Kealey.

I'd love to do character themed skins for everyone, like Abyss and Slate's, it just takes an incredible amount of time to do them and doing them for every possible character is going to take a lot of work. In all likelihood we will never be able to have a skin for every character. The character based skins we already have were chosen because I already had the correct sized background pictures to use for them and it was therefore convenient and easy to make skins out of them (not because those particular characters are awesome or I like them better than anyone else).
You can make things easier for the graphics mods by doing some of the initial image searching yourself. For example, WereCat is currently working on making a background for a WereCat skin and creating all the images herself. If you have an idea for a new skin, send it in! One of the most time consuming parts of creating skins is finding and/or making images that will work for the backgrounds.
What we need for a skin is a picture that is or can be easily made into a background sized picture 1024 pixels wide. We're trying to avoid tiled images.
Each skin also needs a banner, a scroll over image, and two small images that go next to the board names and show whether there are unread messages in that board.
Also, if you have ideas about color schemes for the board color, links, font, etc., I'd be glad to hear those too.
