The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

So Serena had done the college thing, and she'd done it properly, the partying, the absurd amount of drinking, even the more socially acceptable parts like the volunteering and clubs and societies. As a result, she'd met so many people the faces and names in her head were just simply countless, and the faces and names that had slipped through were probably even more plentiful. She recently felt like she was just forgetting people left and right. It was probably just stress.
This, frankly stunning redhead seemed to know her. Or was this some pickup game? Serena had heard plenty of stories from bars of that sort of thing happening and she'd certainly seen enough shows involving dating that made frequent use of those tropes. She'd seen plenty of How I met your mother.
So here came the question. Whether this was Serena being a dummy and forgetting the woman, or the woman testing out pickup strategies... Should she play along?
The whole situation with Amelia was so tangled and fucked up beyond recognition that she didn't even know what to do or where they had stood. And that was before her Ex-girlfriend had become de-aged and had to live the remainder of her life as a teenager.
Maybe her friends were right. When was the last time she had fun? She could almost hear her little sister's voice in the back of her head, pushing her towards this. Screw it.
Something about the way the redhead was looking at her sent a little tingle up Serena's spine. "Hi." She murmured. "I've said that already."
Shaking the awkward social rust away she tried again. "The bar? Are you referring to people from a specific place, or perhaps of a particular orientation?" She quirked an eyebrow.
Serena actually laughed at that one. It was funny, she'd never actually thought about that. On the surface or just based on a simple description Amelia's power sounded really lame, or at the very least not very useful in many situations. Of course she knew better but she'd known Amelia for years, and seen her do some pretty impressive things. She'd met other mutants with similar situations, Leon for instance.
"It's more useful than you think, I'm sure once you get a handle on it you'll surprise yourself." She soothed. "Plenty of powers tend to be not quite what you think they are, and they develop over time too for some people." Her certainly had, her blood hadn't always healed people and she certainly hadn't turned into a blood elemental when she first got her powers.
Doc Prof choked on his drink of water. Serena flashed him an amused smile. "It's not nesscarily your power, It's more your age, and also this is probably going to be a confusing experience for you." She paused, thinking carefully over her next few words before she released them.
"I don't think your job is a problem from what you were saying before. But if you really don't feel like speaking to your family yet, stay here at the mansion as long as you need to get your bearings, it's not a problem." She chewed her lip again, pretty much an unconscious habit at this point.
"Mirror is around, but bare in mind they're older, life moves on and all."
Why were most of Serena's interactions since coming back so emotionally draining? It was basically just her chats with Mirror that hadn't been, even if those had been heavy topics she was nowhere near as emotionally invested as she was with Alice. "I..." she paused. How did she word this without getting all teary eyed again. "I suppose it's mostly just that I know how I feel about you, but I'm a lot more used to having a sibling than you are, even if that was long ago." 8 years, christ.
"And I know that you can't have had an easy upbringing, as you've mentioned. I just... Grandmother is family, your mother is also family. But if I was with them it wouldn't feel like this? This is different. And this feels like home to me, all of this. The city, being around you, the X-men." The amused little smile broke out on her lips.
"I guess my repressed anxiety is just relieved to hear that you feel more or less the same." Self reflection was weird, accepting that you might have issues and understanding what areas the weirdness took part in.
Serena did her best to pretend that topic never came up, never happened. Denial was fine and dandy thank you, she would be sticking with it.
"Alice, that's not-" Working over another lump in her throat. "You know I'd never do that to you right? I value my freedom of choice, I'd not want to take that away from any person, least of all the most important person in my life." The words had just spilled out of her like a tidal wave. God, she really was out of practice with family.
"I'm sorry for being so awkward. I just want our relationship to work." She murmured, thinking of the awkward silence with her dad.
Serena had this awful habit of throwing herself into things and neglecting other things. She'd done it so many times in the past. With college, with living at the mansion and practicing her power, writing... And more recently the whole charity thing and running away from New York city. The most recent though was becoming a member of the X-men.
The training had really kicked up a notch, and for the first week or so Serena only really felt exhausted, but now she was gradually becoming more confident. Her old reflexes were sharpening, her reaction speed with her power in particular was much faster. There was only so much you could do with a power like hers on your own, but when the danger room got involved you could really push things to their limits.
Serena was never somebody that had been able to regularly cut loose with her power and this twisted sick little part of her understood what her alternate self had meant about their power being fun. There was a satisfaction in hitting something as hard as you could, often.
And then to compound all the training and not much living the whole situation with Amelia had happened, someone had picked up on it and practically harassed Serena until the blonde took a break from over training and came to a bar.
"What am I even doing here?" The question was directed at herself, the girls she'd come out with had wandered off somewhere, likely spotting some guys they were interested in. College friends, go figure.
Wearing a pair of skinny jeans, some dark leather boots, a black tank top and a read leather jacket the blonde sighed into her drink, lifting it to her lips. Serena was one for fruity cocktails, this one was a radioactive blue colour.
Blinking slowly as an unfamiliar woman leaned into view Serena drew her head back a little in surprise. "Uhm, Hello?" Stammering slightly Serena was very confused. Was she being bad with names and faces? She had met a lot of people at college, but she really didn't recognise this woman.
It made her feel all warm and fuzzy being around Rebecca. She didn't even care that Serena had been gone for so long, well it wasn't bothering her actively. The whole accidental reveal of the baby and Serena's new status was largely her fault and Rebecca just immediately dismissed it. It also made Serena feel even better about being on the team.
Cafas, Rebecca, Mirror, Sam, Ghost... They were all such wonderful people. Serena definitely had suffered from a little bit of hero worship where the X-men were considered, it was probably part of the reason it had taken her so long to accept the inevitable.
Rebecca had a look on her face, like she was contemplating something. Serena was definitely unsure about stepping into the light, so to speak.
It helped that her friend was helping her make the decision, it was mostly nerves anyway and she should've gotten over them by now. This was new, the whole stream full of people thing. Serena waved timidly at the screen. "Er. Hello." How did you greet this many people at once?
Signings were the only vague comparison she had, and that was both a fraction of the people involved, and she was greeting them one at a time. This was... A lot.
"Codename? Mirror asked me that. Hemorrhage is too dark, which someone had suggested to me forever ago. I was thinking something like Sanguine?" She fished for Rebecca's opinion, she really wasn't sure as this was still all kind of new to her.
Serena fidgeted with her shirt a bit, not realising from where she was standing it was probably very visible. "Introductions, right. Hello, I already said that. My name is Serena, I'm a professional writer, obviously a mutant and if you hadn't noticed I hail from the UK like Becca." That wasn't too awkward, right?
How did one explain Amelia's power? It was sort of like telekinesis but not. Serena had definitely seen it used enough times to have a pretty solid idea of how it worked, but she definitely wasn't sure how Amelia actually used her power. Serena's was mostly visualisation, she generally used her limbs to roughly articulate what she wanted her power to do, although she was fairly sure after seeing her dopple ganger use the same power that it was a psychological thing more than a requirement.
"You manipulate clothes, it's similar to very specific telekinesis. You mentioned something about a bullet proof jacket, earlier I mean."
It was amazing how some people just leapt before thinking things through, it was one of those things that really helped form Serena's mental image of what a hero was. Amelia was one of the people that had shaped that, as well as Serena's older brother, and most of the X-men she'd met. But still, she had opinions on allowing people under the age of 18 to take part in such actions and she was fairly confident that Amelia was currently a teenager.
"I appreciate the offer, really. But It would be woefully irresponsible of me to allow you to do that." Not to mention it would be awkward.
Serena watched as the Doc helped Ami carefully remove the needle and pondered the situation. Amelia was not the first person she'd come across that had been de-aged. She supposed she now knew what had happened to Evelyn though, more or less. She did wonder why the woman had tried the needle when she had gas, if her goal was to affect as many people as possible, surely the gas was much easier to disperse than the injections?
Serena shook her head. "It was a gas that did this to you, I'm not sure if it was a kind of drug or something different. But I'm going to find out."
Recalling something Amelia said about making a straight jacket bullet proof Serena supposed it made sense that she could turn something needle proof also. "I think you maybe did something with your power to stop it getting through? It wasn't like you were holding out an arm for her to just inject you either, hard to give an injection when you're being fought."
Okay so Amelia seemed to be taking the whole situation better than Serena and the prof was. That made sense, it was both probably surreal for her and she didn't have the emotional baggage Serena was currently being weighed down with like a ton of bricks.
"It's.." She paused. How did you word this? Gently, the girl was a teenager. "It's mostly just a bit of a shock. I've seen plenty of mutations applications, but I've never seen somebody suddenly drop years into the past." That was at least, partially true.
Doc prof nodded in agreement. "It's definitely an unusual situation." Understatement.
"Sorry, forgetting my manors." She shoved everything down as far away as she could. There would be time to deal, time to scream later. "My name is Serena, we met probably a year or so after where are now." And then proceeded to crush on her forever, go out on a few almost dates, and then meet again a few years later before going out on some actual dates.
It was Doc Prof that noticed the needle before Serena, stepping forwards he held out a hand. "Easy, careful young lady."
She tried not to wince. She absolutely understood Alice's feelings on the matter, she felt similarly about both her grandmother and she'd felt that way about Alice's own mother for a while. Sure, the old bloodsucker had probably told her not to contact Serena or Jake but... That didn't mean she had to listen. Alice certainly hadn't grown up following the woman's word to a T, how could she not have wanted to meet her niece?
Okay wow. She'd not realised there was still some lingering resentment there. That was something to deal with on her own time though, not something to bother Alice with. "I understand."
It was really hard to imagine, growing up on that estate. One of the things that did still stand out in Serena's memory from her brief visits was how warm their servants had been though, they'd all treated her like family and some of them apparently even remembered her from when she was a kid, too little to recall her brief time there. It had evidently been a few years judging by Alice's age though. "That makes me so relieved to hear, you have no idea." She squeezed her sister a little more before giving her some room.
Awkwarrrrrdd.
"Oh-Er-" Serena cleared her throat and took a drink to try and get rid of the lump rapidly forming. How did she talk to Alice about this? How did she speak to anyone about this?
She winced. "It was part of the reason I left. That's why you've not heard of her." It came out at more of a whisper.
The many whys and hows that had dominated her mind for so long began swirling around it again. Along with the more morbid thoughts, what if she'd died somewhere and nobody had told her? What if she was stuck in that other dumb dimension? The worst thoughts of all were the "what did I do wrong?" aligned thoughts.
Damned dust in her eyes. The writer closed them before her sister could see the tears welling inside of them. "Her name is Amelia and she was the best thing that had ever happened to me until she suddenly wasn't there, I don't know why and I don't want to discuss it further."
A couple of shaky deep breaths later and she reopened them. "And I get your mother, I may have overprotective issues myself." being Serena she of course didn't quite understand the degree to which she understated.
Watching her ex-girlfriend's face closely Serena tried not to say anything else, or move around too much. The younger Amelia bounced back from the whole situation surprisingly fast, just a little shocked admission of the situation before moving on.
Forget her brother? Amelia's mind immediately turned to work, it was so strange. The Amelia that Serena had been talking to not minutes ago was gone, the conflicted confused one with darkness underlying the surface. This was Ami. Her Ami. But young, it was so weird. Serena was genuinely impressed that she wasn't hyperventilating, she held everything together.
Going to respond, the blonde froze. What kind of life had Amelia been leading? She knew about the whole secret agent thing, but she didn't really know what it entailed.
It was a lot. "I-I'm not sure." She replied honestly. "The person that did this to you is long gone, I don't know who she is or where she came from." Wow some X-men she was.
Her quirky sense of humor was in full swing and she made jokes about having an older girlfriend. The knife twisted. "I-" She took a moment to take a steadying breath. "You have time and space to sort yourself out, work out what your life was like. You're safe here." This. Was. A lot.
Serena giggled. "Folk do get pregnant all the time true, but they aren't you." She chirped. It was really nice that her friend was so happy and together with her life, even if the baby was throwing some random physical mutation shaped wrenches into the works. The fact that Rebecca was holding together so well in the face of an impending baby was excellent. "You are very welcome Becca, I'm so very happy for you."
For a split second there had been concern that Rebecca would react negatively to Serena messing with Mirror, but it was swiftly replaced with embarrassment. She really needed to stop letting insecurities effect how she viewed her friends.
And then Rebecca's reaction shifted an eyebrow raised. What could possibly be concerning, was she unwell? She looked fine. As Serena was led into the room her jaw dropped.
She was. So stupid. How could she forget Becca was a viewtuber?! She should have checked if she was actually available before she started chatting with her. Crap.
"I-uhm." Dammit. "I'm sorry Becca, I should have checked if you were busy" she stepped further into the room, unsure of where the camera could actually see. "Well I suppose I'd already resolved to step more into the spotlight with becoming a member anyway." She sighed.
Serena absolutely could not imagine how confusing this whole situation must have been for another person. Especially somebody with as advanced a child mind as Evelyn, she'd never stopped to consider what it must have been like to grow up with powers like that, Serena always found it weird to try and get into the head of a person that had grown up with her power. Hers sprung up from trauma, and she was basically already done with puberty at the time so it was just another curve ball.
Serena shook her head. "No, you were not still with them." She knew that Mirror had been single for a few years, and was now dating Rebecca, she had no idea what had happened with Evelyn.
Serena's gaze softened as Evelyn's hardened. "Evelyn I'm sorry if that hurts you, you meet so many interesting people living here, and more when you leave this place and so on. Not everybody has your memory, most of my life is spent dealing with mutants." She admitted.
Another person's memories was not something Serena had every experienced. It was so vivid, so real. It was like some of the dreams Serena had been plagued by for years, only absolutely crystal clear, with none of the haze.
And the moment it started it was over.
Evelyn was on the floor, there were tears. Serena had gone an even paler shade and took a breath before stepping forwards, carefully not touching Evelyn's skin and helping her to her feet, also righting her belongings. "Okay, that was new." She murmured.
Serena did feel really bad that Alice had never gotten to meet him. "I'm realising as I get older that people are a lot more complicated than they appear, he might never have told us everything but he certainly never tried to manipulate me like Victoria, he might have had his reasons. It's just frustrating that I can't talk to him about any of it." Hell, it's not like she told everybody every single fact about her life. She was still timid about her mutation with Alice and Serena certainly had her own skeletons she was never going to expose her little sister to.
Serena chuckled. "I swear I'm not. Well.." She tilted her head. "I'd be lying if some of it wasn't making up for missing so many birthdays, and not being around the last couple of years but there is more to it. This place is home, not just this apartment, this city, certainly the mansion. I want you to feel like it is too. And if there is anything I can do to make you feel more like that, I'm going to bloody well do it."
More hugs, yay! Serena gave her little sister a squeeze. "I'm glad you like it. And seriously don't worry about it. I trust you. I've only ever given one other person a key in all the years I've lived here, if I didn't trust you completely I would not have given it to you." She soothed.
Serena was sure that Alice's mother probably wouldn't have trouble getting the stuff through, and Alice did probably have legal ID so it wouldn't be too hard to verify. But the blonde kind of saw the two of them as being outside of the main family structure, and she knew for a fact that she wasn't to rely on them as little as possible. Though Alice was a little bit more.. spoiled than she was, so it may have been the case she was comfortable with that. "Of course, and I don't want to step on her toes either. I'm not entirely sure she trusts me fully. But I thought I'd offer, just in the case that you do run into some trouble."
All kinds of different thoughts were racing through her mind. She'd been making out with the older version of this woman not 25 minutes ago, and now she was a teenager, thinking about teenage things. The blush practically told Serena all she needed to know, she was aware of who Amelia had dated years ago, and she looked to be around that age.
She felt like another person had taken her whole body, mind and feelings and taken them, dropped them in a bath filled with ice water. She began to try speaking several times, but her mouth didn't even open. Words not even coming out. Doc Prof seemed a little lost in this situation too, it definitely wasn't standard.
She called her miss. That made sense. Serena was almost a decade older than Amelia at this point. Knife, twist.
Looking paler than normal, and catching concerned glanced from the Doc Serena finally opened her mouth. "You might want to stay sitting Amelia, this is going to be a difficult piece of information too hear, and process." She tried to inject as much softness and compassion into her voice as she possibly could, but she felt like it just came out mechanical.
"That memory, of what you were doing with Mirror? That was years ago. You have been exposed to something, and it's brought you back several years in age, and memories apparently." She did her utmost to keep bitterness out of her voice and was doing a surprisingly good job.
Serena began compartmentalizing her feelings as she spoke, it wasn't the first time she'd had to deal with something this heavy.
"Look, I know this is a lot to process. But it's the truth." She pulled a calender's off of the Doc's wall and showed it to Amelia. "I assume you have a phone on you somewhere... Would you like me to contact your brother for you?" she asked, much more gently.
Serena waited to respond until Evelyn had actually provided the ID to look at. After several slow blinks she replied. "Y- You used to live, and work here." The woman sitting behind the desk basically confirmed what Serena was saying, she took a minute for that to sink in, and another for Evelyn to process it. The girl looked most definitely more pensive than Serena had seen her, but she supposed if she was suddenly a kid and could not remember most of her life she'd be freaked out too.
Serena shrugged. "I didn't know you that well admittedly, but you were a member of the X-men team, and you were actively dating one of the members. So I suppose you were working here, in come capacity."
She definitely felt more pity for Evelyn now, she didn't know how she would have dealt with this situation but it was probably a complicated thing for a child, even one with cognition as advanced as this ones.
"She may have been to you, but I always found her to be quite an interesting and stimulating person to converse with." She admitted. Evelyn was one of the only people to piece together one of Serena's best kept secrets.
The blonde and the woman behind the desk sighed. "Well the good news is there shouldn't be any problems setting you up with a room here. You will have plenty of time to work out whatever direction you want to take your life now, perhaps one you find less disappointing?" She ventured.
"I don't suppose you have any idea how this happened to you then?"
