The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

In retrospect it was probably a good thing that there was a gate between them, Serena had not been this off the handle well... Ever really. She wouldn't be able to recall a time she'd been this mad since at the very least when she was 16. Well at least she was paying more attention to Serena than she had been a minute ago, sometimes you just needed to explode in front of your ex girlfriend for them to give you the time of day, she supposed.
Serena's eyes narrowed. "Well it's a f-------- bad way to open a conversation!" She was definitely still yelling, it just had less force in it than the first explosion. Serena was gripping her own arms now, nails were digging in with visible force.
She felt like Ami had just slapped her. "G-Goo-" She swallowed. "GOOD. REASON??" WHAT COULD POSSIBLY BE A GOOD REASON?!" Okay, the volume was back. This was going to be a taxing encounter. Definitely a good thing there was a gate between them. Amelia would probably have received a punch in the face.
Serena was in shock for but a few moments, her body stiff as a board. How did one normally react in this situation? Throwing things? Screaming? General petty anger perhaps? Nah. Serena was a bit more mature than that. Surely Amelia had a reasonable explanation for ghosting her, clearly being well and alive and randomly turning up at the mansion out of the blue.
She mentally braced, pulled out her headphones and glanced at Amelia, suddenly feeling strangely cold and vulnerable. It must have been because she stopped running, that made the most sense.
Okay, Ami had noticed Serena now. Maybe this would be good for them, get a little closure on whatever problems they'd had, reasonable and patient conversation like adults-
OH HEY?!?!?!
"Y- Y- You-" Her face slowly turned from it's usual pale shades to deeper shades of reddish anger. "I-" Words Serena. Use your words she told herself.
"OH HEY? THAT'S ALL YOU HAVE?!" She exploded. Okay. The words were in upper case, punctuated more as a scream of rage. But they came out. Oops.
Serena had been spending quite a lot of time at the mansion lately, the whole X-men thing hadn't been as big a lifestyle shake up as she'd expected it to be. Mostly day to day it meant that she was doing more directed and concentrated training, as well as learning how to work with other people in a one on one situation. Mirror had been awesome about the whole thing, in fact Serena felt like they were more excited about the whole situation than she was, which was amusing.
The mansion grounds actually looked kind of beautiful. There was this light dusting of frost that just sort of made everything sparkle, and she'd come here pretty early to do some power training, and then decided she should run the grounds. She'd not done that in so long, and it used to be such a relaxing freeing activity. Thankfully she didn't run into anybody like Evelyn, there were a couple of students dotted around the area, but most of them she didn't know directly.
She was very much in workout attire, appropriate pants, top and hoodie were adorned, and her hair was tied back. Obviously she didn't really have any makeup beyond the essentials on. She was here to exercise, not impress random students or staff members.
Everything else sort of became background noise in a tunnel vision, she even worse headphones when she ran to minimise outside distractions. She'd been doing a pretty excellent job of it too, until a flash of brunette hair a familiar figure appeared in her path. The blonde came to a very sudden halt, planting her heels and skidding a few feet on the icey ground, just staring in disbelief Bon Jovi backing her thoughts which were racing at about a hundred miles an hour.
Serena smirked knowingly. Good that she'd picked up on the fact very quickly and accepted her dreadful fate. "Yes, yes they are. If you're my friend, or my sibling in your case you get hugged." She replied matter of factually.
Were they friends? It was weird. She had a very different relationship with Alice than she'd had with Jake. She wasn't sure if it was just because she was the older sibling this time or if it was a personality thing. Maybe because they were both gay and into nerd stuff? Yeah, maybe it was a nerd lesbian thing.
Serena nodded, she supposed that made sense. "I'm a little surprised you're that frugal." She honestly though Alice was much easier going with money. "I think I have a few old consoles lying around. Not that old mind you, mostly just 90's stuff." Serena really didn't own enough stuff to fill out her apartment, not that it would be that impressive to Alice but it was pretty huge.
"Of course I have real cider. Do you take me for a heathen?" She teased, moving towards the fridge. To pull it open and then swiftly spun around and grinned. "Really?? That's fantastic news Alice!" She crossed the room and assaulted her sister with more affection. "She probably thinks it will be good for you, help you understand living independently a bit more." Alice probably didn't have much experience in that field. Serena remembered the system shock when she moved out again.
"And congratulations~ Celebrations are in order then!" She moved back over to Alice and deposited the small wrapped package in her lap. It was about the size of a very small jewelry box. She then turned back to the fridge and went and fetched Alice a cold cider, and poured herself a glass of iced tea.
Serena chuckled happily. "That is the correct way to answer your older sister tackle hugging you." She chirped, leading Alice inside and locking the door behind them she double checked the music was off and let Alice start dropping off her stuff, making herself comfortable. The space really was lonely on her own sometimes. But she supposed that did kind of fit the brooding writer angle, not that Serena brooded often. She had been known to on very rare occasion.
She snorted. "I can appreciate that, but I'm sure unless it's sentimental you can afford more." She teased. How careful was Alice with possessions? It was so strange having a blood sister that she'd never lived with in her life, she didn't know that much about Alice's living habits other than the little she'd gleaned from her bedroom.
"Do you know, I could not tell you the last time I actually played games with another person. Most of the stuff I've written about has been little single player obsessions." She sighed. Her column was really falling behind in that regard, she'd reviewed a decent number of movies and done some more lifestyle blog posts, but she was really slipping in her nerd credit.
"Would you like something to drink, I don't mind cooking or anything, but I also have Alice suitable calorie heavy snacks." She admitted. "OH! And what have you been up to, my dear?" She smiled.
Serena had been told by Mirror about the whole animal features thing Rebecca was enjoying but she'd sort of not actually taken that in, the baby itself was super distracting awesome news. So when Rebecca opened the door it really struck her. She had... Whiskers. It was actually sort of unnervingly cute on Becca, Serena thought foxes were adorable already, fox ears on a person was a bit much on the cute-o-meter for her to deal with.
Normally being the one to initiate sudden crushing hugs Serena squeaked as she was suddenly embraced by her Scottish friend. Obviously she'd been distracted. She definitely blushed at the teasing, she still felt pretty bad for not coming and speaking to Rebecca yet, even more so since the whole pregnancy thing had occurred. "Sorry" She murmured as Rebecca hugged her.
A soft smile graced her features and she hugged back just as tightly. "I've missed you." She murmured in Rebecca's ear. She wondered if fox hearing was more potent or very different than human hearing, how that all worked. It was really a whole bundle of odd.
She held the hug for a few more moments. Well Rebecca didn't hate her. Damn. Serena was dumb sometimes.
She slowly disentangled herself from her fox eared friend. "You do~" She held up the large gift bag for effect, shaking it a little revealing the sounds of a few objects moving around. "I'm told congratulations are in order, and you are far far overdue an apology." She admitted.
Sometimes you put things off for a variety of reasons by doing other things, sometimes the replacement activity was something you ought not to be doing and sometimes it was stuff that needed doing so that you felt more validated procrastinating something.
That was what Serena had been doing in regards to not seeing several of her friends, she knew that she should go and see them. Catch up, apologise and make up with them. Or at least give them the apology she definitely owed most of them. She'd pretended that she was too busy to see Rebecca yet, because she had to get some work done and then she was doing things with her sister, and then she was doing tryouts for the X-men. Most of these things were within easy reach of seeing Rebecca.
Enough was enough, she missed her friend. And though she felt pretty awful for ghosting her, among others, Rebecca had something to celebrate and Serena wanted to at least congratulate her in person.
The blonde English woman wrapped her knuckles gently on the door to Rebecca and Mirror's bedroom. She'd asked around to double check if she was in and was informed Mirror was not. Which was fine, not that she minded Mirror, she quite enjoyed spending time with them. But it was probably easier to get the awkwardness out of the way without an onlooker.
She was dressed in a teal dress, some light boots and had a fleece wrapped around her shoulders, leather jacket folded under one arm with a scarf, the hand holding a large gift bag. She wore a sheepish smile as she waited for the answer.
She nodded with a smile. Good. At least Mirror wasn't absolutely freaking out and tearing down the walls. Some people really were not remotely prepared to be parents, and thus had a meltdown when this sort of thing happened. She was very happy to see that Mirror wasn't at least breaking down. She hoped Rebecca hadn't been taking the whole situation badly, she'd put off visiting her Scottish friend for too long. She'd do it very soon.
"Wouldn't have offered if I didn't mean it, sweetie." She replied, hopping up onto the counter and sitting on it, looking down on Maya little now, scooping up her glass again and holding it out. "Cheers. Congratulations." She smiled brightly again, showing some teeth. "Now this is a cause to celebrate, there isn't really a bigger deal than a new life." She mused.
Well at least Maya wasn't persistently freaking out about her Ex girlfriend being around as a 7 year old. She had absolutely no clue how she'd deal with exs turning up as children. Mind you, she didn't know how well she'd deal with exes period, she'd not really had that problem for a long time. At University it cropped up once or twice, but she generally kept so busy she'd not had to interact with them.
Serena steadied herself on the counter, grabbing her glass of wine and taking a sip. Not that alcohol helped much with impulsive behaviour, but it was something she could do that didn't involve mauling her friend with hugs.
"You. Will be fine. You've had some crazy kids to deal with around the mansion, you're literally a super hero. Not saying it will be easy, but between the two of you you'll manage." She chirped enthusiastically.
"Poor Becca." She mused. "I'm very glad I'm never going to have to deal with that, goodness I hadn't even thought about what mutant children could do to your body." She shuddered at the thought normally, let alone when a mutation was involved.
"Oh, for the record I volunteer in advance as sitter when you get around to that point." She smiled again.
She burst out laughing, taking another sip of wine. Not bad. "Hey hey, in my defense she did look about the right age for... You know." She raised an eyebrow. It had been about 6 year since she'd seen Evelyn. "How are you dealing with that, by the way?" She'd wandered how Mirror and Evelyn had parted, Mirror's romantic history seemed almost as complicated as Rebecca's sometimes. And that was saying something.
To be fair, Sam was the other person she'd generally assume on the team might have a bunch of kids running around. He was surprisingly smooth with the ladies, all things considered.
She blinked. Slowly, several times. Serena took a quick breath, set down her wine glass and hugged Mirror tightly, her voice raising several octaves. "Oh my goodness! That's lovely, that's so wonderful! It's so exciting! I mean, wow! Sorry, congratulations!"
Verbal flailing Serena, reign it in. She took a breath and disentangled herself from the affectionate mauling she'd just thrown at Mirror, smiling a bit more sheepishly. "How are you handling it, feeling about it?"
Serena giggled heartily at that response. "Hey! I've been an adult for years, you just took a while to catch up!" She teased, moving over to the counter where Mirror was and did another little one armed hug squeeze. "I'm glad you've found a path you enjoy for your life. And someone to share it with. Seriously, it makes me so very happy for you Maya." She chirped. She hoped that Gemma and Sam were just as pleased with Mirror.
She nodded grimly. "Honestly, at first I thought she was Evelyn's kid. Well... And yours." She supplied, giving Mirror a bemused look.
She clinked glasses and took a small sip. "Cheers. Thank you." She grinned happily. "So what news are you referring to?"
She glanced over her shoulder and shot Mirror a pout. "I didn't buy it if that's what you're thinking. An insane, but rich hag sent it to me." Serena mostly didn't complain about people, she also generally didn't use descriptors remotely close to hag. But her grandmother was a special case of evil, and deserved to be regarded as such.
"I've actually not had anything to drink since I've been back." She admitted. It'd been a while since she'd had any drink, but even at the worst of times Serena had a pretty solid tolerance, probably due to the nature of her bloodstream. Although maybe it was just one of those things. She'd not had anything in a long while, so it would probably hit her more than usual.
Not that it mattered much, she was just hanging out with a friend. It wasn't like they were at a party or something where she could embarrass herself. "Oh yeah... I totally forgot, I meant to text you a warning, I kind of brought her into the mansion." She paused for a moment. "She was a real little sociopath as a child, wasn't she?"
Serena grinned and let Maya into the apartment, flicking on some lights as she did. She glanced around, very pleased that the place was not pretty clean. Ignoring the clothes in the lounge. Well, nothing was dusty at least, and the kitchen was spotless and stocked, her writing desk was a little bit more of a mess but that was okay, it was because she'd been working.
She blinked. She'd not really thought of that. "Sure! I think I have some absurdly expensive wine somewhere." She mused. Serena had bought very little of her wine. It was mostly her crazy grandmother trying to buy her attention by sending her gifts. As a result she only drank them with friends and continued to ignore the witch, largely just to spite her.
She nodded with a grin. "Top left cupboard. Hold on, I'll be right with you." She moved over to her writing desk and saved and closed down her laptop, yawning and stretching before moving back into the kitchen area. "So what's been up with you? Other than throwing deathbots at me in the danger room, I mean."
Serena had thought about, and spent so much time close to becoming a member of the X-men that it was honestly just weird to think about. The test had been challenging, sure. But it wasn't like she wasn't capable, so she kind of blew through it. It was just weird though. She'd known a bunch of X-men for almost 8 years this point and from an outside view they always seemed so amazing, so larger than life. But on the other hand, she was literally friends with and trained with several of them on more than one occasion.
And now she was one. Her teamwork was really the only thing that she needed to work on. Luckily, working with others came pretty naturally to her so she was picking it up pretty quickly.
She was sitting in basically silence, in the dark with just her laptop screen illuminating. Working on a post for the weekend, it was still strange being self employed and not in any time of full time education or structured work. She was her own boss, which funnily she figured worked quite well with being on a team of super heroes. She felt weirdly giddy about the whole thing, she took it seriously.
She blinked and rose, strolling to the door. Serena was totally not in anything remotely suitable for going out or socialising. Sweatpants and a pink tank top did not qualify. It was comfy though, and her apartment was warm. She strolled over to the door and wondered who it could be, not even bothering to flick the light switch she swung her door open. Her lips blossomed into a wide grin. "Oh not at all, I've always got time for you." She moved to hug Mirror.
Funny, Serena hadn't caught too many actual staff around. Not ones that worked on the administrative side of things. She guessed maybe some of them were still on holiday or something? She always found a nice little surge of nostalgia walking through these halls. Pretty much all of the negative associations with the mansion were gone from her mind. She was truly over it, and just respected and appreciated the place for what it was now.
There was something about the way the girl looked around the building, the way she spoke. Surely Serena couldn't have met her before? Did she remind her of someone then?
Her train of thought was interrupted by a cute girl sitting behind one of the desks, looking very disheveled. And Serena could embarrassingly not remember her name. She looked like a mess, but the place was also unusually quiet, so she was probably dealing with a lot more than she normally had to, poor thing. When she spoke it clicked, she'd probably had the day off and not expected to have to cover today, that explained her state. But it spoke to her character that she was hungover or something and still came in to help out on her own time when she had no obligation to. Serena liked her. For sure.
She was about to open her mouth to respond when Evelyn shot out a venomous observation. The flustered girl was about to stammer a response when Serena gently held a hand out. "It's alright." She was about to give Evelyn a verbal lashing before reminding herself that all kinds of kids ended up here, with lots of varying circumstances, some quite traumatic.
"How she spends her free time is quite frankly none of your concern or business, this is an unusual circumstance, usually there are more staff around to help out. But it is the holidays, and flu season so either of those could be why." The cute mutant girl was nodding in agreement. "On that matter, what is your name?"
