The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Another day, another regret of what happened several months ago... and another run in with an undesirable... Alexander thought as he brushed off his shoulder as he looked down at the ground where a man lay on the ground, unconscious. Alexander had just finished his breakfast and headed down what looked like an alley way that was devoid of people to gather up some discarded rubbish that he could use for range combat practice with when this man came out of the shadows and demanded Alex's money at knife point. What the would-be thief didn't know was that Alex wasn't a lost soul to be intimidated, but a trained warrior. The would-be thief's knife was taken from him and a right cross was delivered to the criminal's temple before he even realized what had happened. Alex shook his head as he drove the criminal's knife into a nearby pallet, then sighed. "I don't envy that headache you're gonna have when you wake up, but be glad that you're still breathing." Alex stated to his blacked out attacker before picking up an empty tuna can. "I would be..." Alex mumbled before going farther down the alley to see if there was anything else he could use.
After venturing through at least three more back alleyways, Alexander found himself carrying a small cardboard box full of used pop cans, empty beer bottles, and a few tin cans that were all perfect for using as target practice. Now all I need is an open area to practice in where no one will see me. Alex thought as he strolled out of the alley and walked down the street with his box of junk. Finding such a place in New York City was easier said that done. Back in Kansas it would've been a cake walk to find such a place. He would just have to head drive for half an hour and stop in the middle of no where. In this large city though, Alexander wasn't sure if such a place even existed. Sure, he could practice in the middle of the park throwing a rock at the stack of rubbish and box, but chances were he would either be arrested for littering or would attract a crowd that would laugh at how much he was missing his targets... hence the reason why he needed to practice alone but also so he could practice with his mutation, and there was no way he was doing that in public.
With a sigh Alex rounded a bend to walk down another alleyway, and found that the alley had a large open area in the back that was being used as a storage area for a few boxes, but that was about it. This place was away from prying eyes, and out of ear shot for everyone on the street. It wasn't perfect, but it would do for what Alexander wanted to use it for. Taking his time, Alexander started to set up every single can and bottle up along the ground so he would have a low target to aim at first. He then put the box down on the ground so the opening would be facing him once he starts tossing stones at it. After everything was set up, Alex and glanced around to see if there was anything nearby that he could throw at the cans and found a few discarded bricks.
After picking up the bricks, Alexander walked away from his targets before turning around to take aim. "First throw of the game, with Cardy Boxer up at bat, and with the new comer Rook up at pitch. Let's see how this game plays out." Alex stated out loud to no one in particular, choosing to have a bit of fun with this while he was at it. "Here comes the pitch..." Alex stated before throwing his first brick at the cardboard box, followed by the sound of brick striking brick. "... and the ball goes five feet to the left of home plate. How this flunky of a pitcher got this job is beyond me folks..." Alex muttered as he frowned. He threw a second brick, and that one went 8 feet to the right of his target. "This is gonna be a long practice session..." Alex stated with a frown.
Alex shrugged slightly when Drew said that getting dead drunk was a popular option, but not really a good one. In Alexander's opinion it was a bad choice and one that should be avoided while he was in this condition. Instead of sitting back down on the bench when Drew did, Alex chose to stay standing because he was feeling a little jumpy at the moment, thanks to Drew sneaking up on him... though the reason that Alex told himself not to sit down was because he had developed a cramp in his left foot, and as currently pacing to get rid of it. In truth though, Alex was just relieved that Drew wasn't going to drill him for asking where a mutant could find shelter.
When Drew mentioned that Alex had a couple of options, the new mutant stopped and locked his cyan eyes on Drew's face to show that Drew had his full attention. All that was left of the tears that Alex was crying a moment ago was a stain on his left cheek, and it was rather hard to see. As he listened to the options that Drew gave him, Alex slowly moved back over to the bench and sat down beside Drew and started to think of which option he should choose. "I've heard a rumor or two about this school, but I've never heard of this Sanctuary before..." Alexander muttered under his breath when Drew finished telling him about his two options. Alex wasn't sure which one he should pick.
Going to a place that would help me learn how to control my powers sounds good... on the other hand I know that it's meant for young children up to high school aged kids, and I'm way older then that. Heading to a place that will accept any mutant sounds appealing too... however I don't want to be dependent on someone else to give me food or shelter. I'm not helpless quite yet. Alexander thought as he stared into the distant sunset while he considered his options. He glanced back over at Drew when the man mentioned that he could give Alex his number if he needed a couple of days to decide. "I don't have a cell phone to call you back on, nor do I have the pocket change to use a payphone, so I kinda need to choose now..." Alex stated before he went back to thinking.
With a sigh, he shook his head. "Well, can you tell me a little bit about this Sanctuary you mentioned? And maybe a little bit about the school? I'm from Kansas so I have almost no information on them." Alex stated, knowing that he needed more time to think this through... but having more information about both places wouldn't hurt.
Nice character, really nice! She and Alexander would have some rather unique interactions with each other... and she would get a lot of interesting memories from his dagger since it's impossible to fully clean the material that it's made out of.
Alright. Now the question is where should we have it and how we should start it. The NYC shadowy places sounds looks good to me... maybe Alexander is practicing using his malachite powers in an ally and Streak wants to see just how powerful this new mutant really is. Sound good to you? If it does, let me know and I'll start it. If not, do you have any good ideas?
Hey guys. Anyone interested in facing my character in a friendly (or not so friendly) duel? Or a few mutants fighting some M drug uses? I just really want to do a thread where I can try out my character's mutation and meet some other people IC. We can discuss how it goes here if anyone or a group of people accept this request.
When Alex had taken a seat in the park, he didn't realize that someone had been following him, however with the way he was feeling at the moment chances were that Alex wouldn't of cared if he knew. The only thing that was on Alex's mind at the moment were the memories of him sending the sharp end of a malachite sword into his father's heart, and the constant gentle chime that the dagger Defiance was making, though Alexander was the only one that could hear that sound since it was part of his mutation. As a result, he didn't expect anyone to answer his question of what he should do now.
So when Alexander did get an answer, he practically jumped off of the bench with a start before whirling around to face the man that answered his question. "Gah! Where did you come from?" Alexander exclaimed as his left hand drifted towards Defiance out of instinct, but he managed to catch himself and stopped his hand from revealing the malachite weapon that was hidden under the leather jacket. It was at that moment that Drew's reply to Alexander's question sunk in, and he calmed down. "Uh... I don't drink. The feeling of being buzzed makes me sick, so I don't want to know what being drunk is like. Sorry for jumping like that." Alexander replied.'
As Drew introduced himself and asked if Alex needed any help, he noticed that the person that was standing in front of him basically towered over himself, but seemed to be a bit on the lean side. At first, Alexander wasn't sure if this person could help him, since the personal problem that Alex had was one that only his family could fix, and they were more then three states away. Besides, he didn't have anyway to get a hold of them if he ever worked up the courage to ask for forgiveness... he had thrown his cell phone away in Ohio and he didn't know any of his families phone numbers by heart.
Then again, Alexander was rather lost, and needed some help to find his way... and this Drew fella was going out of his way to ask Alex if he needed some help. "I'm Alex. Thanks for the offer, but I have to be honest that I'm not sure if you can help me with my personal problem right now. Though you're right about me being lost." Alex stated as he shrugged slightly. He wasn't sure if this guy was a mutant hater or not, but at the moment Alex didn't have anyone else to, so he did the only thing he could think of, and that was to ask Drew straight out. "I'm... I'm trying to find a place that safe for mutants." Alex asked while hoping he didn't just buy a bullet to the stomach.
Hey guys! I just started a new thread called The Ragged Rook, which is my character finally coming to a stop after running for several months, and he's at his wits end. I would like someone to join in and help me get use to this site. It's open to all. I don't really care what we do in this thread, I just would like to get into the swing of things.
How could've this happened? Alexander Davis thought as he slowly walked down an empty path in central park with his head drooped, hands in his jacket pockets, and his feet were basically dragging across the ground as he walked. It had only been a few months ago since Alex discovered that he was a mutant, but the memory of it was still fresh in his mind as if the event had happened yesterday... and the guilt and depression that came with that memory were stronger then ever. The newly emerged mutant had discovered his power by killing his own father with it, and on his own birthday to boot. Alex had stabbed his father with the very knife that he was giving his son to guard.
Why did I do it? Alex asked himself for the third time that day as he glanced around to see where he was, then turned to head towards a bench that was in the middle of the park, not really carrying about what he did at the moment as he thought about how much of a changed man he was now. Before his birthday, Alex was a respectable man. He ran a locksmithing business with a 100% customer satisfaction rating while working as a night custodian, all while belonging to one of the most dependable families on the planet. Now I'm nothing but a murderer... Alex thought as he sat down on the bench, not carrying that the sun was setting in front of him.
However, this was more then just an accidental murder to Alex, and he knew it was more then that to his family too. It had happened on the very day that his family had chosen to celebrate how long they have been a united family, and Alexander was being named a keeper on that day to, and one of his duties as a keeper was to help keep the family together, along with watch over one of the family heirlooms. And what did I do? I killed my own father, with the very heirloom that he wanted me to watch after, in front of the entire family, on the day we celebrated the fact that we were a whole family. Alex thought as lifted up his head and gazed at the sunset with his brilliant cyan eyes as tears started to swell up. He wasn't just a murder in his own eyes... he was a traitor whose actions could rip his family apart.
As a tear fell down his cheek, Alex went to reach for a tissue in his pants pocket when he felt the pommel of the heirloom that he was to watch over... the malachite dagger that was named Defiance. As Alex ran a finger down the side of the weapon, he felt the engravings that were carved into the sides of the blade to make it look like a dove's wing. Alexander let out a sigh and pulled his hand away from the weapon, and let out a sigh. "What do I do now?" Alex asked out loud, not carrying if anyone heard him. He wasn't expecting a reply anyways.
I sense that there will suddenly be more accidental... or perhaps purposeful... destruction of school property that needs a custodian's fixing-up. haha!

Alex
Individual
Character's full name: Alexander Davis Alex for short Alias/ Nickname/ Code name: Rook Gender: Male Age: 29 Date of Birth: 11/11/88 Birthplace/ Home/ Place of origin: Topeka, Kansas Nationality: American Ethnicity/ Cultural Heritage: Germen, English, Scottish
Appearance
Hair color and style: auburn, naturally curly hair kept cut short Skin Tone: Caucasian Eye Color: Cyan Height: 5 feet 11.5 inches Build: strong arms and legs, and has a rather toned body. Surprisingly handsome. Visible mutation: Eyes glow bright green when using mutant powers Scars/ Tattoos/ Piercings: Tattoo of family emblem on right shoulder: a black Pegasus with red demon wings carrying a blue moon lily in its mouth. There is a long slash shaped scar going through the tattoo as if it had been slashed by a knife. Alex also has several scars over his whole body as if he was attacked by several people wielding swords. Other features:
Everyday clothing style: Normally wears a pair of light blue jeans with a forest green T-shirt that is always tucked in no matter what. Normally wears a black synthetic leather jacket with belts on the shoulders over the shirt. A worn brown leather belt holds up his pants. He normally wears a pair of brown cowboy boots now made of strong leather with thick rubber soles. He is also rarely seen without a backpack.
Uniform: Alex’s uniform isn’t anything fancy. Just black boots with steel toes, black pants with an emerald stripe going down the sides of the pant legs, a black short sleeve shirt with an emerald ‘V’ that stretches across both shoulders and goes down to his diaphragm with an emerald rook from the game chess in the center of his chest. It also has a green cape, but Alex doesn’t use it much. There’s nothing to hide his face. It’s all made of a tough leather that can help reduce blows, but it won’t do much against blades and bullets. Sleepwear: sleeping boxers made of silk. Miscellaneous clothing: Alex has a pair of malachite bracers that he wears on his forearms. Both are colored dark green with light green pinstripes, which is typical of malachite, but unlike typical malachite the light green pinstripes are perfectly straight thus revealing that these malachite bracers are made of individual crystals that have been fused together. There are a total of 26 crystals making up each bracer.
Character
Personality: Alexander is a very kind person that is very gentle with a sense of humor that at times only deserves a groan, but also very protective of those he cares about. He's so protective of those he cares about that he would lay down his life for those around him without a second thought. However this is a bit of a ruse to what type of person he really is underneath. Because of everything that has happened when he discovered his is a mutant, along with events from the last few years. Despite this he’s wise for his age and is willing to share it with those around him. While he can be a little rough around the edges, Alexander is the best friend anyone can have, and will never give up your secrets. If there is one thing that Alex has trouble with though, it has to be flirting. Having never been on a date in his life, women make this mutant nervous. However he’s also reluctant to get into another relationship with anyone due to the scars of his last one being fresh. Hobbies/ Interests: Alex is a passionate video gamer, loves to make pottery out of clay when he can, and occasionally a bit of a prankster. Job or part time job and description: Alex hopes to get a job with the X-Men as a custodian in their mansion and maybe become an X-men himself. His last job was to be a consultant (and extra muscle) for the Mutant Related Crimes Unit to track down a group of mutant mercenaries. The certifications to do that job are still good, so he can keep doing that if he wants to. Fears/ phobias/ concerns: Alexander has a bit of a phobia when it comes to water. He has no problem with drinking it, but an inner ear problem has prevented him from learning how to swim. Traitor's Fear: Alex sees himself as a traitor to his family and fears that if people were to find out the whole truth about what had happen, they would also view him as a traitor and wouldn’t trust him anymore. Wanted Man: Alex is wanted by the last remaining members of a now defunct mutant mercenary team called the Harbingers, and this group as a history of attacking those close to Alex to get to him. Because of this Alex is afraid of getting into a relationship with anyone, be it falling in love with someone or simply becoming friends. While he hates being alone, he doesn’t want anyone caught in the cross fire. Special talents: A highly skilled locksmith, skilled potter, sculpture, and basic crime scene investigation skills.
Morality
Good/ bad/ neutral/ other: Good with the occasional neutral actions… and once in a while, though rare, a bad action. Alexander prefers to help those around him before he helps himself, though every now and then he does give in to temptation. He is more than willing to kill someone if needed… and he’s done so before so he’s not afraid to do so again.
Mutations Mutation description: Malachite Manipulation: Alexander is actually capable of altering the structure of a mineral known as malachite, making the mineral grow at an astonishing rate. One example is making his malachite bracers grow blades in times of combat. Alexander can also sense when there is some malachite nearby. To him, it makes a lovely ringing sound.
Strengths: Quite useful for taking your opponent by surprise, for what was once a dime sized stone can suddenly grow into a small club. If he can imagine it, he can most likely make it, even if it has moving parts. In a sense he is capable of making constructs with moving parts. He is capable of making his malachite grow at a maximum rate of 25 feet per second, allowing him to reach his maximum range of 25 feet within 1 second for one bracer, and 50 feet within 2 seconds. And since malachite is twice as hard as concrete it’s relatively hard to break. Weaknesses and Limitations: Due to the properties of the crystals that make up malachite, Alex can is only capable of making each malachite crystal extend maximum of one foot, or grow to the size of a basketball. Because of this his bracers, which are made of 26 crystals each, can extend to a maximum of 25 feet if he leaves the last crystal wrapped around his wrist. Also he can’t make the individual crystals bend, the only parts that can bend are where each crystal meets another, so nothing flexible like a bow can be made, and an attempt at rope will result in it acting more like chain instead. Projectile constructs are impossible too unless he is launching a completely separate object that isn’t part of his malachite. In a sense the dark green areas are solid while the bright green parts can be made flexible. Say he wanted to create a perfect replica of the human hand that could bend the fingers at the knuckles. Each finger would have to be made of 3 crystals; the fingertip, the middle of the finger, and the base of the finger. The thumb would take another 2, while the palm would take another three, and one more for the wrist. That is a total of 18 crystals out of the 26 he has on one bracer. In appearance the hand would be a solid dark green, while each knuckle would be a bright green. As a result the ‘arm’ connected to this hand could have a maximum reach of 7 feet if the hand kept the size of a typical human hand… or 13 if the hand was grown to the maximum size he could make it.
Continuing he can’t rotate the malachite any faster than he can grow it, so attempting to make a bike that is self-propelled by him making the malachite wheel’s rotate, the maximum speed he could get is 14 miles an hour. He might as well get a real bike. Going on from there the malachite can’t exert any more force then Alex could with his bare hands. As a result if he wanted to lift a car he’d have to use the malachite to make a sort of jack to lift it off the ground, but there is no way he could actually throw it.
Finally, he has to be actually touching the malachite for him to manipulate it. Anything less than actual contact and it doesn’t do anything. Lastly he controls the malachite with his mind. So a break of concentration can result in his powers failing.
Secondary mutation description: Malachite Fusion: Alexander is capable of taking two pieces of malachite and fusing them together to make a single piece of malachite. He can also take a single piece of malachite and pull it apart to make two pieces of malachite. Strengths: Once Alexander has put together or pulled apart the malachite, he can let go of them and his power isn’t reversed. He can also use this power to repair his dagger if ever it gets broken.
Weaknesses: Alexander can’t fuse malachite to any other object besides another piece of malachite.
Physical Abilities
General Physical Capabilities: Due to carrying actual bits of rock on his wrists all the time Alex actually quite strong, and having all this weight on him all the time has led to rather great stamina. A whole year spent fighting war train mercenaries has also given him rather quick reflexes. However where he lacks in the flexibility department. One could call him stiff, and he’s a little on the slow side. Fighting Style: Alex has a bit of training in boxing, but where he has the most training is in sword play similar to that of how knights fought, in which he’s almost a master. Fighting Style Pros/Cons: While he’s good in weapon combat, he’s only as good as the average boxer when using just his fists. He can hold his own for a while, but in truth he prefers to fight with his mutation rather than his fists.
History Of Your Character Alexander was born into a family that could trace their roots back to the dark ages, and was raised by his loving parents to be a respectable person with a sense of honor. As he grew up, Alexander’s brothers taught him to defend himself by giving him lessons in boxing, while his father taught him how to handle a sword in the same way a knight from the dark ages would handle a sword. However thanks to a mild developmental disorder called Aspergers, Alexander always had trouble with making friends as a kid and was normally the chosen target for bullies. Having very few friends to turn to while being bullied on all sides resulted in Alex becoming a very depressed child, and for a time was considered suicidal. It wasn’t until his senior year in high school did Alex finally managed to overcome his depression and started to stand on his own two feet. After he graduated from high school, Alexander chose to look for a way for him to protect those around him from bullies so no one else would have to go through the same pain that he went through as a child.
A goal that was easier said than done it turned out. His physiological disorder prevented him from joining the military or becoming a police officer, but Alex didn’t give up on his goal on protecting those around him, and decided that if he couldn’t do it directly, he would do it indirectly instead, and joined a locksmithing school so he could learn to repair and maintain what most people had in their homes as their only form of defense: the door lock. And in order to provide himself with a constant source of income for the locksmithing business that he planned on starting, Alex took a job as a night custodian in the nearby school district. By keeping the schools he worked in clean, he was protecting the students of those schools from getting sick while occasionally stopping a bully from picking on another student. Alexander lived like this for several years, repairing door locks and opening car doors during the day while cleaning the high school at night. It was a rather boring life, but it allowed Alexander to live out his goal of protecting those around him, and he was content.
However, Alexander’s life derailed and became a living nightmare the very moment he discovered he was a mutant, and it happened on his birthday to boot… he killed his own father by mistake. During a traditional family ceremony, Alexander was named the keeper of one of the family heirlooms, which turned out to be the malachite dagger that Alex carries around. As Alexander’s father was handing the dagger over to Alexander, the weapon suddenly grew into a long sword the moment Alexander touched it, and the blade tip went right through his father’s heart.
Dismayed and horrified Alexander fled as fast as he could, leaving his locksmithing business, his night custodian job, his family, and his former life all behind him. The only thing Alexander has kept with him that is from his former life is that malachite dagger, which has been his only form of defense for quite some time. Alexander ran from state to state until he finally reached New York, where he heard a rumor about a place where mutants didn’t need to be afraid anymore. At his wits end and tired of running for his life, Alex chose to see if these rumors were true.
Since then he has had a number of adventures in New York, but after a family member found him, he returned to Kansas expecting his family to punish him... and instead was welcomed back with open arms and forgiven for what he did since it was an accident... not only that, but he found out that his father was still alive, albeit with an artificial heart now. He also found out that every single Keeper in his family was actually a mutant with a similar mutation to his own. The gemstone manipulation X-gene was hereditary within his family, at least up to a point. The official documentation had been lost, but the word of mouth story was that the ancestor that had gained the mutation to manipulate all types of gemstones was the one who made the heirlooms as a gift for their king back in the dark ages in Germany. When the kingdom fell to another, that same person recovered all the gemstone heirlooms and ran off with them to prevent the enemy kingdom from getting them. The assumption is that he married another mutant whose mutation allowed her children to retain the mutation of the father… and the family stayed closely knit afterwards with each mutant in the family being named ‘keeper’ of the heirloom that their mutation allowed them to manipulate.
However when Alex asked what they were to use their powers for, the answer was a very clear one; to protect the family only. No fighting for mutant rights, no protecting humans from hostile mutants, and no using the mutation to make money. When Alex found himself disagreeing with this, a few other keepers approached him in secret and said they also disagreed and said they had joined a freelance mercenary group known as the Harbingers to put their powers to use, and offered Alex a spot. While Alex wasn’t sure about it, he also didn’t want to simply be a sentry that did nothing in the world when he could’ve done something. So he joined, but converted the malachite dagger into a pair of bracers so they could be concealed.
However when Alex met the rest of the Harbingers he quickly changed his mind since they were willing to work for anyone to make money, including terrorists. However as far as the Harbingers were concerned it as too late for Alex to change his mind, and attacked Alex, who managed to escape and get back to the family home, though he had been followed by the members of his family that were part of the Harbingers and attacked by them since they didn’t want Alex to tell their secret to the rest of the family. Alex defended himself and got several scars in the process, but the fight only ended when Alex’s father stepped in and started using his diamond manipulation power to help defend his son. It seemed that Alex’s father knew about the Harbingers the whole time but wasn’t able to do much about it since he was just one man. When more Harbingers showed up though and started to open fire on the two men, Alex’s father told him to run. Reluctantly Alex did so, and from a distance he saw his father die to the hands of the mercenary leader. Not long afterwards he got a letter from the head of his family saying that he was disowned and no longer part of the family because he ran from the battle. No charges would be pressed, but he would no longer be welcome.
Not sure what to do Alex fled back to New York City since he knew he could make a living there, as well as hide in the crowd. He managed to make a living for himself by opening a pottery shop and even managed to help put a stop to the M-drug trade by turning in a dealer and a supplier, but his time there didn’t last long because of one thing; he met a woman that swept him off his feet by a woman named Victoria. While Alex always had trouble with women, Victoria found his insecurities cute but didn’t take advantage of it, and instead tried to help him get over it. However in doing so the two fell in love and moved to the small city of Rochester where they eventually got married after a year. Having not even heard anything from the Harbingers Alex settled down and stopped worrying about them. Victoria worked as a physiological nurse while Alex focused on using his powers to make amazing pieces of art, which when he sold them to the rich and powerful the profits were high enough that within a few years Alex could see Victoria and himself living in a really nice house. As for his mutation, Victoria didn’t mind it since he was using it to help pay the bills. She even used her amazing skills with a sowing machine to make a costume for Alex.
However after 3 wonderful years and six months after Alex and Victoria had their first child, the Harbingers found him. One day when he came home Alex found his wife and six month old daughter dead, along with a ‘sorry we missed you’ note with the Harbingers signature. When the police investigated the crime scene they didn’t find any forensic evidence, and the case would’ve gone cold if it wasn’t for Alex knowing who had killed his family. Quickly the FBI and the Mutant Related Crimes Unit got involved, and explained that the Harbingers weren’t just mercenaries anymore, but were on the verge of being declared terrorists. Due to Alex having an idea on where to start looking for the Harbingers, and because of his capabilities as a mutant, he was hired as a consultant for this investigation turned men hunt. With Alex’s help, the MRCU might be able to get every single member of the Harbingers instead of the one guy that murdered Alex’s wife and child.
After tracking down a family member in Kansas that Alex knew was a Harbinger, and after the mutant duel that quickly started when Alex found that cousin, the FBI and the MRCU interrogation yielded some interesting information; the Harbingers had several bases that were all mobile, and they had far more money to work with since they didn’t need to buy as much ammo and equipment due to every member of the Harbingers was a mutant. What was hoped to be a month long pursuit was starting to look like it was going to be much longer.
In the end it took an entire year to track down the three moving bases of the Harbingers along with individual members that were scattered far and wide. With each encounter Alex helped subdue the mercenary turned terrorist, though he didn’t always help with the unavoidable fights. When they finally caught up to the first of the 3 mobile bases, they had a pleasant surprise to find the leader of the Harbingers there. In the battle Alex ended up facing the leader’s son in a duel. A mutant with energy projection powers, Alex found it to be a tough fight and was forced to kill him along with his guards. When everything was said and done the FBI and MRCU had taken several mutant mercenaries into custody, including the leader who surprisingly wasn’t a mutant. They had effectively cut the head off the snake that was the Harbingers. That done and with their files on hand, they quickly found out where the rest of the Harbingers were and thus didn’t need Alex’s help anymore and could go after the rest on their own.
As for the person that had killed Alex’s wife and child, it turned out to be the leader’s child as a test to see if he was willing to do what it took to lead the Harbingers when he took over. Alex had avenged his family without even knowing it.
But with this job done Alex found himself directionless. He couldn’t stomach going back to Rochester where the memory of his dead family would haunt him, and he wasn’t welcomed back into the rest of his family even after all of this. However when he remembered the X-Men that were in New York City, Alex decided to head back there in hopes he could figure out what to do next with himself once he got there.

There wasn’t a cloud in the sky to block the view of the glittering stars that were high overhead, like a black bed sheet with thousands of diamonds scattered across it, and the full moon illuminated the sky and the Earth below, which made it a bit easier for Alex to see everyone that had shown up for the family reunion at his grandmother’s mansion. Cousins, aunts, uncles, siblings, and everyone in between were gathered in the courtyard in the backyard, waiting for the traditional ceremony to begin. It’s the same every year. Alex thought to himself as he half walked, half pushed, his way through the crowd to get to a small child wearing a ‘hello kitty’ coat, his niece Heather. Trying to be sneaky, Alex tip toed up behind Heather, knelt down, and quickly scooped her up in his arms. “Peek-a-Boo!” Alex said with a smile as he lifted Heather’s hood so he could see her face. “Uncle Ali!” Heather squealed in surprise and delight, happy to see her favorite uncle. She was still learning how to talk so she could say Alex’s name quite right, but that made her all the cuter. “Happy B-day Uncle Ali!” Heather exclaimed as she wrapped her arms around her uncle’s neck to hug him. It was true; this family reunion had fallen on Alexander’s birthday. He was 23 now, which meant after the traditional ceremony Alexander expected everyone to see ‘Happy Birthday’ to him… and he half expected his crazy sister Erica to sing ‘and many, many moooore’ off key afterwards. She always did, and it always made everyone laugh since she was a professional singer and she was going to school to be an opera singer. “That’s right Heather! It’s Uncle Alex’s birthday!” Alexander said to Heather as he walked towards the house where his father was standing in the stone gazebo. The ceremony was about to begin. It wasn’t until Alexander was closer that he realized that sitting on the table behind his father were several boxes that he recognized as the keeper boxes. In each box was a family heirloom or an item that were important to the family during the dark ages. Dad want’s to choose a new keeper for one of our heirlooms? I didn’t expect this. Looks like this ceremony is going to be different after all. Alexander thought as he handed Heather to her mother Susana. “Everyone, if I could have your attention please.” Alex’s father John began, and the large crowd quickly quieted down. “Another year has gone by, and we are still a united family. Every year we come together and celebrate this, and pray that we stay a united family. However, before we start the ceremony, there is something I would like to do. As you all know, Alexander is 23 today,” John continued, but was suddenly cut off by everyone shouting “Happy Birthday Alexander!” to which Alex simply smiled and held up a hand to get them to stop and listen to John again. “Well, as the head of the family, I would like to give my son a birthday present that will be unlike any other: the right to become a keeper of one of our heirlooms.” John said proudly, and Alexander’s heart jumped right into his throat. Alexander hadn’t expected this at all. Being named a keeper was the highest honor his family could give him. It meant that he would be responsible for one of the objects in one of those boxes, and he would get to keep it as long as he wanted or until he died, in which case the item would be returned to the house until someone chose to become the keeper of that item again. With a gulp, Alexander walked up into the stone gazebo and looked down at the five boxes that were before him. He could choose any one of the boxes, but he had no idea what might be in one of those boxes. With a shrug, Alex started to reach out to a box made of polished red wood. However before he could touch it, Alexander stopped and stared at a box made of stone. It was odd, but he thought he heard a chime or a ringing sound coming from the box. He had never heard anything like it, but something about that sound seemed to attract his attention, almost as if the object inside the box was calling out to him. But that’s impossible. I know what every single heirloom is, and none of them can make a sound like that. What’s in that box? Alex thought, puzzled, and tapped the lid of the stone box. When John opened it, Alexander’s eyes went wide. There, resting on a red velvet cushion, was the most precious of all of the family heirlooms; the pure malachite dagger, Defiance, rumored to be the very knife that their ancestor Victoria used to kill a marauder chief. What’s more was that the dagger was making the very chime sound that Alex thought he heard coming from the box. John smiled and picked up the dagger by the scabbard, and offered it to Alexander. “You’ve made a wonderful choice son. You’re the perfect person to watch over Defiance.” John said with a smile. Alex slowly nodded as he reached for the dagger. “Thank you Dad.” Alex said as he grasped the dagger’s hilt and pulled it out of the scabbard. The moment that the dagger left the scabbard, the beautiful green blade started to glow bright, and suddenly extended in length, as did the handle. The dagger had grown into a long sword… and the end of the blade and gone right into John’s chest. Alex’s mother let out a scream of horror as blood started to come out of the wound in John’s chest. Alex could only stand there dumb struck as he looked at the malachite weapon in his hands shrink back to its normal size. “I… I didn’t mean to…” Alex tried to say, but a cry of rage that came from behind him cut Alex off. Terror and fear quickly built up inside of Alexander as he heard the sound of his family members running towards the gazebo. Fearing for his life, Alex jumped from the gazebo and took off running for his car, Defiance still in his hand with the scabbard in the other. “What have I done?!”
