The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. As Alex assisted with picking up all of the pieces of broken pots, Mr. Shin gave Alex a questionable look. "Excuse me, but I've never heard of the name Rook. Is it in a different language?" the old merchant asked, and Alex glanced over his shoulder to look into the old Korean's eyes before answering with a warm smile. "No, it's just a nickname that my father gave me. He was a very skilled chess player and the rook was his favorite chess piece. He nick named me Rook because I'm a lot like a rook... I'm strong, sturdy, and yet I can really move fast when I'm trying to protect those around me. I like it better then my family name." Alex started, though in reality he was just giving the old man his nickname because he wasn't sure he should give his real name out in case there was a warrant for his arrest out. He was guilty of manslaughter after all... sure it was by mistake with his mutation, but a crime was a crime. Mr. Shin seemed satisfied with the answer though, and nodded respectfully before leaving to grab his broom and dust pan to sweep up the smaller pieces of broken clay.
Alex was in the process of picking up a rather badly cracked pot that had splintered into several different pieces when he heard someone walking into the stall, and heard a female voice apologizing for the woman's actions. Alex stood up and turned around to see a woman not much older then himself with blond hair, asking why that woman was so determined to get the vase. Alex's flawless cyan eyes studied the woman's face and found her rather beautiful. It was the first time in three months he had stopped long enough to actually see a woman's face long enough to get his attention; but he quickly looked away since he thought he wouldn't have a chance with her... besides, he was a mutant that was on the run. When Mr. Shin spoke up to answer the young woman, Alex looked over at him. "You are her daughter? I didn't think Susana had a child." That comment caused Alex to do a double take and his mouth hung open.
"'Susana?' You mean you know her?" Alex asked in surprise. The old Korean nodded sadly. "Yes, I do. She's an actress on Broadway and has become... well, I don't wish to be rude, but she has fallen in love with herself and believes herself to always be right. She is also in love with her collection of rare pots and vases. From her point of view I don't have the right to refuse any of her demands because I am worth nothing to her because of my low economical standing. If I had not already sold this vase to another customer, I would have gladly sold it to her just to get her away from my shop. She wanted that piece so badly because it's my best work. She is always after my best work and only pays half the price I put on it." The merchant said, then gave the young woman an apologetic look. "I'm sorry for being rude about your mother child, but it is the truth. I won't hold it against you if you're not willing to pay for the damages after I insulted your mother that way." Mr. Shin added, and he was clearly afraid of this Susana. Alex picked up the last broken pot and set it down in the nearby trash bin while looking over at the young woman that claimed to be Susana's daughter. Funny... I don't see any resemblance between her and that actress. Alex thought as he raised an eyebrow, puzzled.
Back in the alleyway, Susana was holding her stomach and fell to her knees as the drug started to work within her, changing her body's genetic makeup, and the pain was making her whimper. But it's well worth it. This pain is nothing compared to the power I have when the drug is fully kicked in. Susana thought with an evil smile, then gasped in pain as her eyes turned from their beautiful green to blood red. Her body shuttered again as her blood solidified within her veins. With a groan, Susana stood up and looked around. Everything had a tinge of red to it now, and she could smell each person walking passed the alley. She looked down at the palms of her hands, and smirked at the holes in the center of her palms. She glanced at a piece of rubbish that was in front of her, and swung her hand towards it. A blood red whip shot out of the hole in her palm and struck the piece of rubbish with such force that the whip broke the cement that was under the crumbled up newspaper she had just whipped at. The whip retracted back into her hand as she used her other hand to put on a pair of sunglasses to hide her blood red eyes. "And now... time to get me a pot and to teach that old coot a lesson... and maybe that boy too if he is still there. No... I change my mind. I wanna have some fun with him before I kill him. I hope he resists, since that makes it even more enjoyable." Susana hissed as she left the alleyway and started to walk towards the stall.
Alex was sitting in the passenger seat of Drew's car as they went through New York City, heading towards the X-mansion. It had only been a few hours ago that Alex had been so depressed that a head shrink could of declared him suicidal, and at the time Alex might have agreed with them. He had been rolling around in his grief over killing his own father by mistake, not to mention he did it in front of his whole family which would tear the family apart, and to top it off he had gone back on everything that he had lived for with that one mistake. He had been condemning himself for that for the past three months while being on the run. Alex glanced over at Drew and studied the man for a few seconds. If Drew hadn't shown up at that moment, I think I might have become depressed enough to kill myself. He says I don't owe him... but I think I do. Alex thought as he looked back out the window and saw that they were driving up to a large wall with a gate.
"I guess this is my stop." Alex stated as the car started to slow down. Drew had informed Alex that he had an errand to run and that it couldn't wait, so he would have to drop Alex off at the mansion's front gate and then leave. The news had disappointed Alex a little bit, but he was alright with it. If the Mansion truly was a school for mutants teenagers, then surely he could get access by asking for a job as a custodian. Teenagers were known for being messy, and so were mutants that were getting used to their powers... so Alex guessed that they would gladly accept the help of someone that cleaned up messes for a living.
It didn't take long for Drew's car to pull up to the front gate, and Alex climbed out and shut the car door behind him. Drew drove off, and Alex walked up towards the gate and marveled at how well it was built. Thick tall walls and a very solid gate that used large deadbolt latches to keep it locked. It was very impressed from Alex's point of view. With a nod, he walked towards the gate and through the gate to see if there was anyone there that would let him in. "Hello? Anyone home?"
So, this is where all of the action happens... not bad! Alex thought as he entered the crowd that filled up the market street. All along the sides of the street were shop keepers selling their wares and many of them had their prices outrageously high so they would be making a killing... and many of the people on the streets were falling for those prices and were buying those items at those steep prices. Other shop owners were selling their goods at an honest price and were selling even more. There were also the occasional shifty merchant that was selling illegal goods like imitations, watches that ran backwards, and even stolen goods. Still, the place was very lively and Alex had to shoulder his way through to even have a chance at seeing some of the goods.
Thought it had taken a while to get through the crowd, Alex finally managed to get to one of the stalls to take a look at what looked like some purses and hand bags. A few of the hand bags looked like they could be rather good for carrying some essentials, but a few of the purses were clearly knockoffs because you could clearly see the stitching along the edges of the purses, and Alex wrinkled his nose at seeing this and chose to move away from the stall. As Mom used to tell me about shopping at market stalls, keep in mind that one bad product represents everything in the stall. Alex thought as he remembered some of his mother's advice when it came to shopping at market stalls. However, the entire market plaza of Topeka was nothing compared to even a tiny section of the New York City market, so maybe her suggestion would have to be amended some for this place, but still, it worked for him.
Alex was about to head towards another part of the stalls when he felt a growling in his stomach, and realized that it had been a while since he had last ate, and started to look around for where the food stalls were by following his nose. However a loud commotion off to his right stopped him in his tracks and he turned to see what was going on. An extremely beautiful woman with long blond hair and long black eye lashes was having an argument with an elderly Korean merchant that was selling clay pots that looked like they were hand made. The merchant was holding onto a very fabulous vase with both hands as if he was afraid it would shatter if the woman touched it.
"I want that vase! You have no right to deny my right to it!" the woman shouted at the top of her lungs as she lunged for the vase, only to miss when the merchant took a step backed again causing the woman to stumble and bump into the merchant's display and caused a clay pot to fall onto the ground and break up. Clearly it had not been the first time she had lunched for it since there were at least three other broken clay pieces on the ground. "Ma'am, get a hold of yourself! I told you that someone else has already purchased this vase! I will not go back on my word to him!" the shop keeper exclaimed with a thick Korean accent as he looked down at another broken pot with dismay. With his display surrounded by broken pots, no one would do business with him. Seeing the elderly man's reaction to the broken pot, the woman's eyes narrowed and she grabbed a different pot that was decorated with flowers and held it over the pavement with here thumb and forefinger. "If you don't give me that vase, I'll destroy every single one of your crummy pieces of clay junk you have here!" the woman exclaimed, and to prove it she flicked her wrist as she let go of the pot. The elderly man watched in horror as another pot fell towards the ground.
However it never reached the ground since Alex had caught it in mid air and carefully placed it back down on the display. "Ma'am, what is the meaning of this?!" Alex said as his flawless cyan eyes glared at her with a cold look that would make even the most misbehaved high school student would buckle under. However this woman seemed to be enraged with Alex stopping her from braking the pot and gave Alex a look that made Alex thing of the 'hell hath no wrath like a woman's scorn' saying. If looks could kill, he'd been dead on the spot. "That old coot won't sell me the prize piece of his display! He has no right to deny me the best!" the woman exclaimed while pointed an accusing finger with red nail polish at the elderly Korean man. Alex glanced over at the merchant with a curious glance. "Is this true?" Alex asked the merchant in a calm tone. "Are you deft?! I just told you that he-" the woman started to protest, but Alex cut her off by holding up a hand. At first the merchant didn't answer as he kept a fearful eye on the woman. "Yes... it's true, but I-" "See?! He admitted it! Now give me that vase!" the woman interrupted, but Alex stopped her from lunging for the vase again. "Enough! He has a reason behind it so why not listen to what it is?" Alex stated before looking over at the merchant again. "You see, someone else already bought this vase, but his bag wasn't big enough to hold it along with everything else he had bought. He asked me if I could hold onto it while he left to buy a bag for him to carry it in. He already gave the money for it to me, so I agreed. I gave him my word, and I never go back on my word." the elderly merchant stated as he pulled a small handful of dollar bills from his pocket as proof, and Alex nodded.
"I don't care! Give me that vase and I'll pay you triple it's price!" the woman shouted as she tried to claw her way passed Alex, but he didn't budge as the merchant shook his head. "That's enough ma'am. You have broken several display pieces belonging to this man, and that ware is already purchased. If I were him I would've called the police already. Get out of here before I call them myself." Alex sternly told the woman as he reached into his leather jacket. Fuming, the woman turned away and walked away rather quickly for a woman wearing four inch spiked high heels. "You're going to regret this!" the woman roared as she turned and stalked into an alley way. Alex watched her leave, and turned to the elderly Korean. "You alright?" Alex asked, knowing what the answer was since the merchant was trembling as he tried to put down the vase without breaking it. "T-thank you young man. I was afraid that she was going to steal this vase and not pay for it. I'm Mr. Shin." the merchant said with a shaky voice as he mopped his forehead with a hanky before kneeling down to pick up the pieces of broken pots, and Alex knelt down to help. "Call me Rook. Everyone does."
Down in the alley way, the woman glanced around to make sure that no one had followed her before reaching into her purse and pulled out a small pill, and smiled evilly down at the pill. "My little friend, we need to teach a certain merchant a lesson he won't forget, along with his rescuer." the woman said to the pill before moving it towards her mouth. "Too bad he sided with the merchant instead of me. He's a handsome one. He could've been lots of fun." the woman said before she placed the pill in her mouth. Closing her eyes, she swallowed and waited for the pill to kick in.
When the man in front of Alex didn't respond right away, Alex couldn't blame him at all. Considering he was standing among a bunch of ripped up stuffed animals that were scattered all over the place. He must think that I'm either mad or a vandal. Alex thought as he glanced around at the torn up stuffed animals before glancing back over at the man in front of him with a guilty look. "I... uh... this isn't as bad as it looks. You see I was uh..." Alex started to say, trying to figure out what to tell this guy so he didn't seem like a bad man, but he couldn't think of anything that seemed like a good reason to rip apart a box of condemned toys... save for the truth and hope that this guy wasn't a mutant hater.
Finally, Alex just shrugged and gave up on trying to come up with a lie. "Oh forget it. I was practicing with my mutation so I wouldn't hurt anyone with it by mistake again." Alex said truthfully before he bit his lower lip nervously. "I guess I went a little overboard." Alex stated, then sighed. I wonder if it's like this for all new mutants. Alex thought. "I'm Rook." Alex introduced himself, thinking it might be a good idea to give this man his nickname instead of his real name. He wasn't sure why this man came the alley in the first place, but at the moment it was himself that was under the microscope, not this stranger in the salt-n'-pepper coat.
As the squeaky toy rolled away, Alex glanced down at the malachite dagger that was in his right hand, and looked at his reflection in it. It was only a few months ago that his cyan eyes were filled with such joy that he could make a person smile simply by walking into a room. Now look at them... Alex thought as he sighed and looked away from his reflection and started to put Defiance away. Instead of joyful eyes, he now had sorrowful eyes that were filled with a pain that would never fully go away. As far as Alex was concerned, he deserved to live with that pain for the rest of his life and then some.
With a mournful sigh, Alex slid Defiance into the scabbard on his left hip, then zipped up his leather jacket to help keep out the cold. He had been moving around so much that the body heat he had built up had been keeping him warm... so now that had calmed down, he was starting to feel the cold and was glad that his leather jacket was lined. As soon as his zipper was up to his neck, Alex jumped slightly when he heard a voice from behind him that sounded like it belonged to an adult male. Alex glanced over his shoulder and saw an African-American man that looked to be about his own age or close to it.
At first Alex wasn't sure how to greet this man since he didn't recognize him at all... and then it came to Alex's attention that he was standing in the middle of what could be considered a massive amount of property destruction... and he looked more then guilty. Oops... that was beyond stupidity Alex... Alex thought to himself before he noticed the word 'trash' written in bold marker on the side of the box that the doggy toys had been in. Phew! Alex thought in relief. The contents of that box were already condemned, so chances were no one would mind the contents being torn to ribbons then turned his attention back to the stranger. "Uh... hi. What's up?" Was all Alex could think of saying at that moment.
When Drew responded to Alex's question about the X-Men and then asked if Alex was hoping to become one, the new mutant glanced over at Drew and shrugged slightly. "I... I don't really know..." Alex responded honestly. He had never even considered the idea. Me? An X-Man? Alex thought, puzzled. Sure he could hand himself in a fight, and his power was quite versatile, and he had a strong sense of justice and honor... but an X-Man? If he became one he would be living out his life long goal in ways that he never dreamed of, and he would finally be making a difference... but... he didn't know if he was cut out to be one. "I... I'll have to think about that one..."
Alex listened to what Drew said about the X-Men and how they mostly just try to keep the peace, and he nodded in acknowledgement. It was a good cause... a hard cause that would try to get you at every turn, but a good cause none the less... and Alex knew that he would gladly take on that cause without a second thought if he was given the chance. Maybe becoming an X-Man was a great idea after all, however he needed to be sure about this, because once he becomes an X-Man there would be no backing out.
When Drew got into the driver's seat of his car, Alex climbed in on the passenger side and locked his door after he shut it, and grinned when Drew said their next stop was Xavier's. "So I take it this is gonna be a non-stop flight then?" Alex said with a smirk.
It took a little while for Alex to get a hold of himself after discovering how far he could extend such a small object, and was quite frankly stunned. If my opponent was charging at me from a distance of 35 feet or less, I could kill him by simply extending Malachite into their heart or neck, or knock them out by turning the edge of Defiance into a ball and then extending that ball into their forehead at high speed. Just how powerful am I anyways?! Alex thought as he gazed down at the dove wing shaped knife in his hands, and ran his fingers across the engravings that gave the malachite dagger its feathery appearance. As he gazed at the weapon, he started to wounder if he could extend and retract the Defiance at a rapid rate in order to attack multiple targets.
With a shrug, Alex turned to face the tipped over box of squeaky toys, and aimed the malachite dagger at the doggy toys. A moment later his eyes started to glow bright green and the dagger extended at a rapid rate, pierced a squeaky toy, and then quickly retracted... and that whole process had taken only half a second to pull off. As soon as he possibly could, Alex tried to extend the Defiance once again, but the dagger didn't react to Alexander's command until another half a second passed, only then did the weapon extend once again and pierced another squeaky toy. Alexander tried his best to quicken the pace of his attacks, but nothing he tried made the weapon extend or retract any faster, nor did anything he did shorten the wait time between attacks... but then again, waiting half a second before being able to attack from a distance again wasn't that bad at all. When Alex was all done practicing, the Defiance looked a lot more like a squeaky toy shush-ak-bob, and Alex had to pull each toy off one by one. I hope I don't have to do this with human bodies... Alex thought with a shutter as he pulled off the last squeaky toy and tossed it aside.
As Alex considered the possibility to use the Defiance as a ranged weapon, he kept running into problem with his ideas. I can't make a malachite gun, mainly because I need a gun license to buy ammo and I refuse to resort to stealing ammo. What about a crossbow or an actual bow for a bow-an-arrow set? No, in both cases the bow part has to be able to bend back to provide the arrow the needed force to fly... and malachite doesn't flex. Alex thought as he fingered the dagger in his hands and slowly walked in a wide circle. Moving around always helped him think out a problem weather it be how to get a permanent marker stain out of some wood, fixing a broken clay pottery jar, or working on a character's personality in a short story. His mother told him that walking causing his blood flow to speed up so it brought fresh oxygen to his brain at a faster rate, thus letting him think faster, or better depending on your point of view.
Alex stopped pacing and looked down at the ground. My short stories...[/i] Alex considered as his light bulb went on. In my last story, the main character used a grappling hook that fired out of a compressed air gun to take out the main villain because his gun jammed. The hook had nailed the villain and got stuck in the cement wall behind him. Afterwards the rope connected to the grappling hook was so tight that the hero was able to walk across the rope as if it was a solid pole. Alex thought as he looked down at the dagger, then back at the squeaky toys that were sprawled across the ground. The blade of Defiance extends at a rather rapid rate when I turn it into a long sword. If I maintain the blade's shape and as I extend it, would it work? Alex wondered, then shrugged before he aimed Defiance at a squeaky toy that was shaped like a hot dog.
Alex's eyes started to glow green, and the blade of Defiance rapidly extended at the hot dog like a harpoon is shot out of a spear gun, and nailed the hot dog on the first try. Alex smiled and recalled his power over Defiance, causing it to rapidly retract to its normal size... and it brought the hot dog squeaky toy with it. Once Defiance was back to normal, Alex pulled the dog toy off the knife and nodded. The toy had been at least ten feet away. Not bad a range, but Alex hadn't put all of his power into the dagger. and he wondered what would happen if he put all of his energy into Defiance. One time he had detached the pommel of Defiance to make a lock pick to help open up a crashed police car to get the hurt policemen out of the burning car without hurting them, and it had extended 18 times it's normal length, and wondered how far a whole Defiance could extend.
Taking a deep breath, Alex walked to one corner of the open area, and faced the opposite corner. He aimed Defiance at the far corner and focused. The end of Defiance extended just as fast as last time, only Alex made it extend as far as he possibly could... and when it stopped growing, Alex's jaw dropped. The dagger had extended so far that he could measure how long it was with his eyes! Putting the super long malachite weapon down, Alex measured out how long the weapon was now while making sure he was always in contact with it. He knew full well that if he wasn't touching it for only a fraction of an instant, it would shrink back down to its normal size of two feet.
By the time Alex had reached the other end, his eyes were bigger then baseballs, and the green glow coming from his eyes made them seem even bigger. "Impossible... it's 36 feet long! That's 18 times its normal size!" Alex exclaimed as he stood up rapidly. As his finger wasn't touching the weapon., the Defiance quickly shrank faster then the rubber of a popping balloon, and was back down to two feet, chiming as it always did for Alex. The mutant known as Rook slowly walked over to the malachite dagger and picked it up with a shaking hand.
When Alex finished telling the shortened version of how he discovered his mutation, he could see that the man understood Alex's current situation, and he seemed to silently agree with Alex when he said that you just get use to experiences like that. It helped a little bit when Drew put his hand on Alex's shoulder, but not much. He just needed time. He glanced over at Drew when he started to tell the story of how he discovered his mutation and just like Alex he didn't say what his mutation was, but it went along with Alex's story in that he had a lot of trouble getting over it. Alex slowly nodded in acknowledgement and followed Drew to the car. "Power... it always comes at a price that always too steep to pay..." Alex stated, repeating one of his father's most important lessons to him.
After the two tales they had just told each other about, Alex was almost glad that there was a bit of silence now, allowing his mind to process off of the information he just got. In the distance he could see an old black car, and he guessed that they were heading for it. He then glanced over at Drew when on of the rumors he had heard started to nag at him. "I need to change the topic. One of the rumors I heard about the mansion is that it's home to the X-Men. It's more then just a rumor, isn't it?" Alex asked, having heard the rumor in Kansas and having never asked about it here in New York.
When Drew commented that he wouldn't have any problems with finding a job at the mutant school because it was full of teenagers, Alex smiled and nodded in agreement, but grew a little puzzled when Drew laughed at his comment about him moonlighting as a recruiter. Apparently Drew found the comment funny, though Alex didn't understand why until Drew explained how he met the first mutant he brought in... and Alex found the story so funny that he busted out laughing and was holding his sides because they started to ache because he was laughing so hard. "I've seen several strange things and heard of dozens of situations that mutants were the cause of, but that takes the cake!" Alex exclaimed as he started to calm down from laughing.
Soon, Alex had also calmed down and his face became saddened as Drew explained that he had been in hiding for two years because he was afraid that people would discover that he was a mutant, and the people that found him were the best thing that happened to him. Alex sided and mournfully nodded. "I know that feeling all to well. I discovered my mutation by killing my father with it as he was giving me the highest honor he could possibly give me... with all 43 members of my family watching." Alexander said sadly, and sighed. "Experiences like that don't go away at all... you just kind of get use to it..." Alex stated as he realized that he was never going to fully get over the way he discovered his mutation, and that he was going to have to get use to it.
With another sigh, Ales shoved the memories of what happened three months ago to the back of his mind, and gave Drew a nod. "Lead the way."
Alex noticed that Drew had grinned when he voiced his finally decision about going to the mansion, almost as if Drew was approving. Maybe he was hoping I would go to the mansion. He works there after all, so obviously he would be in favor of it, unless it was a bad place to work that is. Alex thought. At the moment that Drew mentioned that the school could always use more staff members if only to help with clean up, Alex chuckled. "That comment is more appropriate then you think! I worked as a custodian for four and a half years!" Alex exclaimed with a smile in reply to Drew's comment. He then shrugged when Drew stated that he didn't need to owe him a favor. "Alright. I think I can handle that." Alex said with a nod.
As Drew explained that he could get Alex in and explained his duties there, Alex smiled and nodded. "And apparently you also moonlight as a recruiter in my case." Alex stated, then his smiled slowly faded as his thoughts drifted back to his family for a moment, and Alex finally realized just how much he had cheered up in such a short period of time. "Strange... I was in such a depressed state a moment ago, and now I feel like myself again because I have somewhere to go where I might have something to do. Funny thing hope is, isn't it?" Alex stated, feeling a bit puzzled by it.
Deep down though, he knew the reason why. Ever since he had been on the run, he had been thinking that his life long goal of helping those around him was over and now his only purpose was to run and hide like a rabbit being stalked by a wolf that just wouldn't give up the chase. Now there was a possibility that he could take up that goal once again, and in a way he never thought possible; he would be protecting students from illness by keeping their school clean while protecting the students themselves by keeping mutant haters at bay. It was a calling that he never dreamed of in his life, and now it was right before him as a possible future. He was gonna take it. "I'm ready when you are..."
Alexander kept his eyes on Drew has the man described the two locations in better detail, and thought carefully about Drew was saying. In truth Alex didn't have to choose right now, he just thought he would have to since he didn't have any way to get back in touch with Drew once he made his mind up. When Drew mentioned the frequent property damage the Xavier school got from the hormonal teenaged mutants, Alex couldn't help but smirk in remembrance of when he was a custodian in a high school. Hormonal teenagers made a lot of messes in that place too. At least it will be something that I'm use too. Alex thought before nodding in acknowledgement when Drew said that adults were welcome too. That was good to know. What was also good to know was that in a place like the X-school he could get a job so he could earn his keep instead of being supported by other people. The new mutant didn't like the idea of accepting charity.
When Drew started to talk about the Sanctuary and that the person in charge, named Lori, ran the place like a family, Alex paled a little. While the Sanctuary would take him in without any problems, and while they would look after him, the way that Drew described the place hit home with Alex. He had just lost one family that he loved very much, so he wasn't ready for a new family at all. The pain was just too strong... to real. That settled it right then and there. Alex was going to choose to go to the Xavier's.
Alex nodded and cleared his throat a little as color returned to his face. "I think... I want to go to the Xavier school. I've worked in a school for several years before I realized my mutation, so I think I can find a way to help the school out. That way I'll be able to stand on my own two feet once more." Alex stated before standing up and held out his hand for Drew to shake. "Thank you for giving me a hand. I owe you a small favor for this." Alex stated before he pulled a map of New York City out of his jacket pocket and started to open it up so he could find the location . However his stopped and glanced back at Drew with a slightly worried look. "Hm... if this is like any other school I've worked in, they most likely won't let just anyone wonder it. I'm right aren't I?" Alex stated in a slightly worried tone, guessing that he was more then right since a mutant school might have more security then any of the schools that Alex had worked in before.
The third and final brick more then missed the cardboard box, and it completely missed the tin cans and glass bottles... the last brick had sailed upwards and landed on the roof of the building that behind Alexander's targets. Seeing this, Alex's jaw dropped before he slapped himself in the forehead for being such a bad throw. "Good grief! I could drop a rock out of a helicopter and it wouldn't hit ground!" Alex ranted before he kicked a nearby box over out of frustration, resulting in the contents spilling out all over the ground. Alex stepped over the spilled out squeaky toys meant for dogs and headed over to the two bricks he had left at his disposal, and went back to try again, only this time he was ten feet away from his targets instead of twenty feet. The malachite controlling mutant dug his feet into the pavement, narrowed his eyes slightly at his intended target, then reared his arm back to throw that first brick. He took careful aim, tensed his muscles, and threw the brick.
This was followed by Alexander throwing his second brick onto the ground next to him in frustration. The first brick had gone wide and went down a sewer drain where the protective grate was missing. Now he was down to one brick and he still hadn't hit a single target. "This is getting ridiculous! How the heck could someone be such a bad throw?! I can throw a punch better then any of my brothers, but I can't hit a stupid box with a stupid brick!" Alex yelled, then walked forwards until he was about five feet away from his target. With a snort, Alexander just threw the brick without even giving himself time to aim... and the brick landed two feet in front of him. "Argh!" and with that final try, Alex gave up on trying to hit the cans and the box from a distance by throwing an object at them.
Trying to calm down, Alex slowly breathed in through his nose, then slowly let that air out through his mouth. Afterwards he felt a little calmer, and reached for the malachite dagger that was at his hip, hidden by the leather jacket. The moment that Defiance was in his hand, Alex looked around to make sure that there wasn't anyone around him to see what he was going to do next. Not seeing anyone, he drew the dagger and held it at his side. From the tip of the blade to the end of the pommel, the Defiance was only two feet long. That will change soon enough... Alexander thought as he looked down at Defiance, listening to the chiming noise the malachite was making for him, and that it only made for him. Alexander let out a sigh as he slowly closed his brilliant cyan eyes.
After standing motionless for a half a minute, Alex opened his eyes to reveal a bright green glow coming from his eyes, and the small dagger suddenly grew into a long sword that had a three foot long blade. With a smile, Alex charged forwards and with one clean sweep of his sword, he cut three of the pop cans in half and shattered a glass bottle, sending the shards into the box. Another swing cut the tin cans apart while shattering the second glass bottle. With a final upwards slash, Alex had sent the box skywards while cutting it in half at the same time, so the two halves landed on either side of him. With a satisfied snort, Alex's eyes stopped glowing and Defiance shrank back down to normal size.
With a sigh, Alex slid Defiance into it's scabbard noiselessly and started to head for the alley that would take him back to the street, making sure that his leather jacket covered Defiance completely so the valuable knife was well hidden. However, he stopped when he was half way there and turned back around on his heel to look at the dumped over box of squeaky toys in thought. I wonder. Defiance is the perfect melee weapon for me... but could it also work as a ranged weapon?
