The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>> "Hey. How's it going?"
Chase lifted his gaze towards whoever was speaking towards them. It was... that guy. The water balloon guy. The "I tried to transform into you and you didn't like it" guy. Albeit most people didn't like it when he Chase looked like them.
"Luke," Chase announced, the name of the canine fellow before him finally surfacing, "Hey."
The boy didn't sound too enthused. It wasn't anything personal, really.
>> "I'm taking a break from finals. Getting some air, y'know."
"Cool," the small teen remarked, "I'm building a pyramid."
He placed a few bricks on the pyramid to demonstrate.

He was at an in-between. There was really no other way to put it. Chase was too old to roll with the kids, but too small to be included with the teenagers. Even if he was almost fourteen, he still felt like a "tween". What was worse was that Toby was busy with God-knew-what. Probably his culture class. Even though he'd been at the Mansion forever, and was adapting well, the adults were insistent that he continue with his studies. Studies that Chase was... not included in. As such, he was very, very bored.
The boy heaved a theatrical sigh, as if there was anyone there to hear him. It'd been dead quiet. The weather was nice so the "kids" were outside. The older teens were studying for finals. If Chase were any wiser, he'd be studying too. Instead he was surveying a box of Lego's with a deadpan expression.
Listlessly the shapeshifter began to arrange the bricks into a small square. When that square was complete, he would start another square atop that, though slightly smaller. It would be clear to any onlooker that the boy was building a pyramid. Another theatrical sigh. What else could he do, with Toby gone?

Chase felt the tendrils of their disguise unraveling moments before they collided with Mama. As soon as they felt their guise slipping, however, they quickly lost their steam. Oh, crap.
"s'all good!" a very much Chase-like voice squeaked, a little too brittle, before the human shifter turned and took off running away from their mother. If Gemma looked closely enough, she'd notice that the apparent-girl's hair was getting shorter and regressing to a very familiar two-tone hue... until she left Gemma's aura, that is.
Why did it have to be Mama?! Of all people! It had to be the one person that could suck all the fun out of wandering around looking like a girl. Chase didn't stop to see if Mama was following them, or calling after them, or really stop at all. They ran until they needed to stop and gulp down air, since they'd been running so hard.
Female!Chase rested with their hands on their knees, keeping a wary eye on the direction from which they'd just run. They'd run again, too, if they had to.
"This was... a really... stupid idea..." Chase grunted between breaths. They paused, wrinkled their nose. The voice would need some work. The disguise would need some work. They still... kinda wanted to show Mari, but God knew where she was... if she was in the dorms, Chase would need to sneak past Mama.
The human shifter stood in front of their mirror, skirt clutched in their knobby hands. Their brother… well, their doppelganger… laid on his bed with a comic book open in his lap.
“I don't think I can do this,” Chase protested to their recumbent brother.
“Then don't?” was the distracted reply.
Chase stomped their foot, eyes rolling, “Ugh, forget it. You're not helping.”
They had bought this skirt ages ago, when Mari had been their chaperone on the mall field trip, but Chase hadn't the guts to wear it beyond the confines of the room, not even around Mama. They did want Mama to see though.
“What if people tease me?” Chase murmured.
“We're shapeshifters… just make yourself look like a girl,” Toby sighed, matching Chase's exasperation from earlier. Chase sighed. But then Mama wouldn't see them, she'd just see some girl. With a groan, Chase pulled off their t-shirt. Now or never. They wriggled into their skirt-- a black, above-the-knee thing with a lace underlay. Given their slenderness, the skirt seemed more flowy than it would have perhaps seemed on a curvier individual.
Chase swayed cheerfully, letting the skirt fan as they did so.
“What shirt should I wear?”
“One of Mari's?”
They weren't really Mari's anymore, she'd outgrown them-- either in size or style-- and passed them along to her cousin. Chase has stashed these shirts in the same place the skirt had been stashed: in the bottom corner of their closet, in a ball. Chase stooped down, digging through the stash and fishing out a wrinkled v-neck tee with black pinstripes. Mari's style was a little more staid than the budding adolescent would have preferred, but they wouldn't turn down free clothes.
Chase pulled the shirt over their head, flattening it with their palms. They cast a crooked smile at their reflection. There was a momentary pause, and Chase's hair began to lengthen and straighten. By the time that the curtain of hair reached the small of their back, it was a dark, warm brown. They kept their usual human skintone.
“Make your eyes a little bigger,” Toby remarked. Chase shifted their attention from the mirror to just over their shoulder, to where Toby sat in the reflected world, “You know. Girlier.”
Chase nodded, their eye shape warbled.
“How about that?”
“Hm.” Toby said approvingly.
“Wish me luck.”
With that, Chase was gone through the door. They hadn't even taken the time to put on shoes.
°°°
Chase was all smiles. Where should they go first? Maybe they could show Kalos! She'd enjoy this new face. Or maybe Mari! They couldn't swallow their giddiness, knowing how cute they must look… they couldn't even decide where to go, they just… wanted to be seen! Would anyone figure it out? Of course not! The Mansion was always getting new kids, and they just looked like a new kid. What could they... could she... do for fun around here? What did girls do for fun?
The apparent girl flitted down the hall, unable to find a voice with which to reach out to another girl or group of girls.
There was some fumbling, as Chase helped Mama reconcile the myriad of fasteners. Slender fingers gripped a zipper that was too small and carefully drew it before latching a hook-and-eye. Buttons were fastened with increasing deftness. Chase did his best to contain his excitement. Most little boys didn't get excited about pretty dresses... but Chase wasn't most little boys. The shapeshifter was beaming from ear-to-ear once Mama was set.
>> "Can you run over and see how Jorge and Toby are doing? I'm supposed to meet them in the office, I think, but it's hard to coordinate."
Chase nodded dutifully, now assigned with a very important mission, and ran for the door. In his excitement, he neglected to close it all the way--
>> "How do I look?"
Toby scanned Jorge's outfit and appearance. What did he mean, how did he look? He looked like Jorge in a suit. Toby's expression scrunched a bit-- that probably wasn't what he meant.
"Like a man who's about to be married?" Toby attempted, looking rather abashed about his inability to offer platitudes. They probably hadn't reached that topic in his daily lessons. The boy smiled apologetically.
Chase had seen the direction down which Papa and Toby had gone, so Chase followed that way. Through a closed door, Chase heard the familiar tenor of his doppelganger's voice, and Jorge's steady baritone in response. Bingo. The shapeshifter fumbled with the door, poking his head in through the gap moments after Toby's compliment had fallen flat. Jorge stood with arms open, all like, "Hey, check me out," while Toby seemed a little confused, and perhaps a little sorry.
Chase wriggled in through the door, offering a bright, "Mama's ready!"
Chase bee-lined his brother, nudging him with his elbow, before doing the same to Jorge. It was a way of fist-bumping without skin-to-skin contact.

Toby ponderously squished the apathetic egg again-- a few times for safe measure-- as Marisol explained its purpose. It was a really silly looking thing. A rare smile barely surfaced on his face. It wasn't shaped like a ball. But it was fun to squish.
"I like it," he announced, replacing the egg so that he could dig for more squishy things. How fun was this?! Maybe he'd buy a "stress ball" rather than... whatever Chase was looking for.
Speaking of Chase... the crown of his head had vanished behind numerous racks and displays, and he was hunched over in order to comb through various skirts that were hung on the rack. Oooh, that one was galaxy print. What size was he, even? Did it matter? Chase tucked one into his arms, furtive eyes glancing over his shoulder, as if he expected Marisol to come around the corner at any minute. Well-- he kind of did, and with good reason. Chase returned to scouring the skirts. This one had mesh with stars on it, over a black underskirt. Cute! He grabbed that one, too. Ooh, and the lavender circle skirt!
If Toby upheld his end of the deal, Chase could probably even sneak into the dressing room to try these skirts on. Only if Toby kept Marisol distracted, though. Chase stood back up on tiptoes, sweeping the room for his cousin. She'd caught him trying-on her clothes before, but... this was different. This skirt would be his and his alone.
"Which do you think is the best?" Toby asked Marisol, having amassed a collection of four different super-deformed squishy characters, food, and the likes.

The doppelganger beamed at the praise and attention, but the abrupt, "Wait, hold on," brought a halt to the wagging tail.
>> "You copy memories, you said? Like, what do you mean?"
"Uh... yeah..." the doppelganger confirmed, hesitance clear in their tone. One day, they'd learn not to spill the beans like that. Luke!prime was puffing up like he'd touched one of those zap-y balls at a science museum, like he was all full of static, and his ears were perked.
>> "Did you read my mind?"
"N-no," the doppelganger replied, haltingly.
"It's more like... uh... everything has its secrets," the doppelganger said quickly, "And I can ask things their secrets, and then they tell me. I only know what the things do. Does that make sense?"
This was starting to get awkward. He didn't see why it was such a big deal, especially when just a moment ago, Luke!prime was praising his doppelganger. Now he was acting like it was a bad thing.
"Look, if you're gonna be weird about it, you can just have this back," the doppelganger said churlishly, holding the phone out to the original, "Take this back and I'll go back to normal."

Both boys were, unbeknownst to them, fulfilling the same roles with Mama and Jorge. While Chase was excitedly running to the dress bag to unzip the white, billowing monstrosity from its container, Toby was similarly venturing towards the small bag. The former was practically uncontainable with his excitement—a big, beautiful wedding dress! Chase hadn’t gotten to see the dress when Mama had bought it, so it was very new and exciting for him. The latter—Toby—seemed politely intrigued by the process of dressing for one’s wedding.
Toby passed the bag to Jorge with both hands, solemn. He was familiar with ties, but not-so-much cufflinks. Weddings already seemed really complicated.
“When Ms. … Mama… marries you, will she take your last name…?” Toby asked Jorge. Chase had been explaining to Toby what it meant, that Mama and Papa were getting married, so Toby was trying to fit their marriage into his poorly constructed schema.
Chase, all the while, was sizing the wedding dress up—he carefully took hold of the hanger, and tucked one arm under the skirt. It was so sparkly. The dress only stung a little with the remnants of alternators and fitters, so Chase as able to carry the gown to his Mama without much trouble.
“I love the sparkles,” Chase advised his mother, beaming.

The wagging tail did not settle when the questions arose. Chase loved questions, and he loved being tall! The doppelganger paced experimentally, a little wobbily on their canid legs and feet. He didn't show any indication of listening, for he was too busy watching his steps to make eye contact with Luke. Luke's doppelganger did, however, respond.
"I don't know," they said unhelpfully, "Other people, I guess. No animals. No inanimate objects. I guess I copy memories, too. Or maybe I read them? I dunno."
Wag, wag, wag.
"It doesn't hurt," the doppelganger confirmed, finally looking at their original, "My skin is made of... I dunno. Things that like stretch. Like ropes? Snakes? It doesn't hurt."
Luke seemed to be weirded-out, and they couldn't have that, could they? Luke's doppelganger held-out the smartphone, the trigger for the shift.

Chase was practically reverberating with impatience when his cousin and his doppelganger finally arrived at the door to Pop Subject, fidgeting impatiently. When his two relatives finally joined him, he was all but ready to bolt before Mari halted them to lay some ground-rules. Okay, okay. Stay in Mari's line of sight, don't run off, she was there for whatever. Okay, trouble.
"Mari, we're thirteen!" Chase reminded his cousin. As if that precluded Chase and Toby from finding trouble, "We know how to act in a store!" At least, in a group as small as this. Chase didn't need to prove how cool he was to Toby, so there was no need to act like a peacock or a fool.
Chase tugged at his doppelganger's wrist, gesturing for him to follow him past the wall of shelving that hosted t-shirts, and the siren call of accessories on the rotating displays. The eager human-shifter cut towards the back of the store, plunging into the thrumming punk music. Toby did not follow, distracted by the pins, toys, and sundry of crap by the registers. He'd never seen such multicolored and pointless things.
Chase's eyes seemed to illuminate with excitment when he spied the wall of dresses and strappy skirts. He glanced over his shoulder, spying Mari. She didn't seem to be looking his way at that moment. The shapehsifter ran his hand over a dress, clutching at the hem of its skirt and fanning it. It was black, with a "T" neckline and a mesh back. Too fancy. He moved down the rack. This is why he was here.
Toby, all the while, found a lethargic looking fried egg which, when squeezed, deflated-- but, when he opened his hand, it resumed its previous shape.
"Mari?" Toby asked, turning to face her with the strange squishy egg in his palm, "What's the purpose of this?"

The boys spilled out of the car once it was parked, Chase hooking his arm around the back of Toby's neck in a friendly (if not slightly rough) gesture of camaraderie. Natural forms aside, Mama's aura had its perks, including making rough-housing possible.
>> "I'm going to need help, Chase. I can't put on this dress alone..."
Chase's eyebrows leapt skeptically. His experience with dresses wasn't extensive. But if t.v. had taught him anything, it was that Papa wasn't allowed to see Mama's dress until they were actually getting married.
"Okay Mama," Chase agreed. Chase didn't unwind his arm from around his doppelganger's shoulder until Toby was tasked with supervising Papa and making sure he didn't leave.
>> "Toby, stay with Jorge so he doesn't wander off, okay?"
Toby nodded curtly, making no indication of realizing that this was said in jest. His eyes, slightly pinched, lingered somewhere in a curious, confused orange. His confused stare was only broken when Chase untangled his arm, squeezing his brother's shoulder.
"See you soon, 'kay?" Chase promised him. Toby nodded.
>> ”Don’t worry. I’ll make sure to stay within eyeshot.”
Toby nodded again, following his brother with his eyes. Eventually, he glanced towards Jorge, processing the sequence of events that the detective was laying out. Meet Merle, help Jorge change out of casual dress... and then, the ceremony, Toby supposed. A massive hand clasped Toby's shoulder, and the boy followed the gesture with his eyes. It made the skin of his neck prickle with the inclination to shift, but Toby was better at resisting involuntary shifts than his brother. Jorge was smiling, so the boy deduced that the gesture was a kindly one.
>> "Let's go, kid. Time to make me look somewhat respectable for your mom."
Toby quirked a tootless smile back. There was a lot of questions on his mind... why was it necessary for Gemma and Jorge to change clothes? Why was Jorge insistent on calling Gemma "mom"? Why was he separated from Chase? Toby didn't want to ask too many questions, though. He'd have to watch and learn.
"I think your normal clothes look fine," Toby remarked, smiling. The shifter-child lightly touched his forehead to Jorge's side, much in the way that a cat my press its head against their owner. Chase had explained to Toby that Jorge and Gemma-- Mama and Papa-- were good people, and that he should be nice to them. Toby dislodged himself, starting in the direction that Gemma and Chase had left, before turning to face Jorge, "But I will accompany you nonetheless."

Chase gladly took the cell phone into his hand, the device stinging in his palm. The tendrils of his hand swelled around the phone, course grey furs surging out like timelapsed blades of growing grass. His limbs lengthened, face shifted-- belatedly, Chase realized he should hop out of the tree. Luke was big and he might break the branch. But the shift (which occupied all of a few seconds), left him discombobulated, and Luke's doppelganger landed on his butt. The doppelganger looked up at the original with amused, green eyes.
"I'm you!" the duplicate announced, smiling from ear-to-ear. One pointed ear flicked, and faux-Luke ran a padded hand over a pointed ear. A twitch of delight crept into his tail. His head had stopped reeling, so faux-Luke got carefully to his feet, steadying himself with a hand upon the tree-trunk. More hesitant tail wags ensued.

The more impish of the two boys grinned when Marisol scolded him. That's exactly what someone who was losing would say. Chase knew where Pop Subject was, he could see it! And if Marisol couldn't see it or him, she'd just have to move faster. Chase ran off like a shot, though his escape was mostly impeded by the thick crowd that surged around him. Despite his best efforts, catching-up would be no problem.
Toby showed no indication of joining the race to the store, as it was his first time at the mall, too. (At least, his first time at the mall, to shop... and in this universe...)
>> ”Gonna join the brat in their racing?”
Toby shook his head, "You?"
Chase was almost to the entrance of the store, and he glanced back to scope-out where Mari and Toby were. They were just coming up off of the elevator, and if Chase could see them, they could probably see him, too. Chase stood to one side of the entrance, bouncing on the balls of his feet with excitement.
