The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Quin nodded when Will clarified the part about how often he’d used his powers over the last few years, and why he liked to run.
That explained why he’d been going so hard on such a hot day when they’d met. It helped make things more tolerable. Suddenly, Quin felt bad about teasing him that day, ”Not that running is bad…but why don’t you just use your powers more if it helps bring things down a notch?” she asked, curiosity evident in her voice. Quin knew that if she’d been in the same boat, she’d have done that exact thing.
It was also incredibly satisfying to hear that the two bad guys that Will had put the whammy on had had a decidedly terrible time. Quin knew that if the hammer handed guy hadn’t managed to get that plastic off his face he’d have had an even worse time than a flash bang going off in his head. Had the face wrap been loose enough or thin enough for the hammer hand guy to even breathe? Quin hadn’t had the luxury of time to finesse what she was doing so she didn’t know. She supposed it was one of those, ‘play stupid games’ situations, but still shuddered a bit at the potential implications.
Will seemed confused when Quin pointed out that she was impressed that he was still able to help her, but maybe it was just one of those things about powers. She was about to speak, when Will amended that it was probably starting to catch up with him a bit and extended his hand. The alternative did not sound pleasant in the least, so Quin set down her mug and reached out to place her hand in Will’s. ”I wasn’t saying it was strange by the way…” she said, ”I was impressed. I can’t really hold on to things very long, especially if they’re heavy.”

After handing Will his mug Quin sat, pulling her legs up into the chair, a slight twinge in her side reminding her that she probably shouldn’t do that.
As time went on she was definitely getting more sore and Quin wondered if that had more to do with the natural order of things and she was just hurting more or if Will was tired enough that what he had done was wearing off.
To that end, Will admitted that he’d been cagey about his powers in the first place and Quin shrugged. She hadn’t really thought he was being cagey, they’d been talking about things in the middle of a crisis and she’d gotten the idea.
Will could turn senses up and down, and his own were pretty much constantly turned up. He had said that he didn’t really think about managing his surroundings anymore, but Quin had to think that it was because he just did it subconsciously. Like avoiding peppermint tea.
Taking a sip from her cup, Quin sighed, tea was so good. ”So it gets better if you use your powers?” she asked curiously, then frowned a bit thoughtfully, ”But you said in the church it had been years since you’d really used them.”
Quin could absolutely empathize with how hard it was to explain something that you could just do. It was like that for her with the plastic. Quin couldn’t explain why or how she could change it and mold it with her hands. Just that it worked.
Will was honestly doing a pretty good job of explaining though. It was like he could tell each sense apart and then push or pull them. Or jumble them together.
Tasting colors or smelling sounds? Quin had to laugh, actually laugh, at the thought. ”I wonder what purple tastes like.” she said idly, shaking her head a bit and taking a drink.
”And they deserved much worse if that’s all you did.”
She thought for a moment, ”I still can’t believe that what you did earlier is still working after all this time…” she paused a beat, ”You’re probably tired though…you don’t have to keep helping. I doubt I’m going to be running again any time soon.”

”Yep.” Quin said in confirmation of what it was like when the thunder was close, “It’s like…if you’ve ever been close to heavy base, how it just kind of rumbles through…” she said, then couldn’t help but grin a bit when Will said he could amp her up too. Of course it made sense that if he could dampen someone’s senses he could also do the opposite.
“That would be really cool.” she said, thinking that the experience was already kind of intense and wondering what it would be like if the feeling was amplified.
Will preferred the lemon and Quin felt silly for even suggesting the peppermint. Of course peppermint would be a lot for someone with heightened senses. Despite the fact he’d told her to go ahead if she wanted, Quin set the peppermint aside and scooped the lemon balm into both of the diffusers and put them into the mugs before adding the now boiling water to steep. ”Honey?” she asked as she thought about what Will had said.
”It must be a lot to think about all of that all the time.” she said.
It turned out that Will had just been trying to make small talk and Quin smiled a bit sheepishly, “It’s okay, sorry to keep finding ways to insert it into the conversation. Some people have a tendency to get really weird once they know.” she said by way of explanation. “So I have a tendency to get a bit in my head about it all and over explain”
To that end, Will thought that things were lopsided as far as information was concerned and as Quin removed the diffusers and brought the mug over to Will she thought about all the questions that had come up throughout the day. A lot of them seemed rude to just come out and ask at this point, so Quin tried to choose something simple to start.
“Tell me more about your powers.” she said, “I know you can dull things, and you just said you could amp them up. You may have said more in the church but I can’t remember.”

”You’re on.” Quin said when Will offered food in exchange for the view during a good storm. ”Sometimes the thunder is so close you can feel it.” she said, then tilted her head slightly, “Probably be particularly interesting for you.”
Quin got the pizza out of its box and out of the plastic wrapping inside and was finally putting it in the oven when Will decided on tea. Probably the prudent choice. ” The vodka is super cheap anyway…” she said as she set her phone timer and set about filling the electric kettle sitting on the counter.
“I was gonna have some peppermint or lemon balm. Do you have a preference?” Quin said, getting everything set and the pot to warming.
Will asked then if she’d lived her since…. “The deageing?” she said, it was such a weird sounding term, but it was what it was. ”New Years Eve, 2019.” Quin said, ”I didn’t move here for a couple of weeks, but it’s all a bit of a blur.” she explained, pulling the tins of tea and a couple of diffusers from a drawer.
Smiling a bit, Quin shook her head, ”I know it’s all really weird…” she said, ”Anything else I can clear up?”

The elevator doors opened and Will quipped at how long it had been since they’d seen one another. Quin couldn’t help but laugh, it shouldn’t have been nearly as funny as it was, but that was the kind of day it had been.
Into the elevator Will moved, and Quin moved back to the fingerprint scanner to send the elevator back up towards her floor.
It didn’t take long until they were moving into the apartment and Will noticed the view almost immediately. Quin couldn’t blame him, it had been the first thing that she’d noticed too.
“I couldn’t stay in my old apartment.” she said softly, walking towards the window, “I don’t know who did it, but someone set this place up for me. I don’t think I moved from here the entire first night.”
It was true. Quin had just stood there, then eventually sat, looking out over the city and trying to figure things out.
”It’s wild in a thunderstorm.” she added, much more lightly as she walked into the kitchen.
”Anyway, I hope you don’t mind pepperoni.” she said, working at opening the box so she could get the pizza in the oven. “You want a drink? I’ve got water, fizzy water, juice, tea…vodka?” the last was a joke. Maybe.

Quin was still staring out at the city when the oven beeped to indicate that it had finished preheating. Had she been standing there that long thinking?
Pulling out her phone to check and make sure she hadn’t missed a text while she’d been lost in her thoughts, Quin shut the screen off and put the phone back in her pocket. Maybe Will wasn’t going to come up for pizza after all. In all honesty it wouldn’t have surprised Quin one bit. The day had been absolutely wild to begin with and then he’d been subjected to all of her unique mess in the hospital tent after those stupid cops had shown up in the cathedral.
Thinking back on everything, Quin wondered if she should have said less…but it always just seemed so wrong to do that. Being around Quin meant that weird things were going to happen from time to time when someone recognized her or knew something that she should have known but didn’t.
Regardless, it was too much for a lot of people to wrap their heads around and as a result, Quin didn’t have very many friends. At least not friends she knew well enough to know all that about her.
Quin was rummaging in her freezer for the pizza when her phone buzzed in the pocket of her sweats and she pulled it out to see that Will had actually texted.
Setting the pizza on the counter, Quin tapped out a quick response
Oven is already preheated, on my way.
Slipping her feet into a pair of flip flops she tended to leave by the door, Quin headed out, making sure the door shut behind her and headed to the elevator where her fingerprint was enough to open the door. Soon enough she’d pushed the button to take her back downstairs. Maybe she’d underestimated Will just a bit.

Will could think he was updating her name all good and proper in his phone all he wanted, but Quin knew that she absolutely had the upper hand there and wasn’t likely to give an inch of ground.
The elevator ride up to her floor was completely uneventful, something that Quin had taken for granted at least a hundred times before today. She was sore, and she was tired and Will’s reminder that his powers were still working on her made Quin realize that she was likely to get much more sore and much more tired before this was all done and over with.
Hoping that Will didn’t doze off before she’d had a chance to get herself all clean first-aided, Quin wasted no time once she was in her apartment and headed to take that shower.
The water stung at first, courtesy of all the little cuts and shrapnel wounds from the rock guy and Quin could see a large and solid bruise already starting to form over her right side where she’d taken the brunt of that flying rock after it had shattered her shield. That was something she was going to have to work on, she thought as she washed and rinsed her hair. It had been far too easy to break what she had made and Quin realized she was probably lucky she hadn’t been hurt worse.
Still, she was going to hurt like hell in the morning and after she’d gotten out of the shower and dried off she took Will’s advice and took a bit more than the recommended dose of ibuprofen. The cut on her face wasn’t all that bad and Quin took a few minutes to brush the snarls and tangles out of her hair before deciding to leave it down to dry.
Pulling on loose sweats and a tank top, Quin grabbed a zip-up hoodie and headed out to the kitchen to start pre-heating the oven.
That done, she walked to the windows and looked down at the city. Here and there she could see the telltale blue and red off police lights, but nothing really looked all that different from what it had when she’d left this morning to find somewhere to study.

“A dubious honor indeed.” Quin said when Will quipped about his status with Black-Tac. ”Don't hope too hard for that patch though…they’re likely to put you to work tonight.”
Will thought a shower sounded good and Quin nodded, it was the first thing she was going to do when she got upstairs. She just felt filthy and these clothes were going straight into the trash. Sure it was a waste but there was probably no salvaging the jeans and the shirt wasn’t in much better shape.
Her offer of pizza looked like it was going to be accepted too and Quin couldn’t blame Will one bit. Even freezer pizza was going to be better than whatever they were feeding folks down here. Quin nodded and opened her mouth to add something when Will spoke up again.
Quin had completely forgotten about her ribs. She’d also never gotten checked out at the hospital. Surely nothing serious was wrong though, she’d have never been able to run or gasp for air the way she had if anything was broken.
”Thanks for the heads up.” she said, ”I’d honestly forgotten.”
Well, that was pretty much it for now, Quin supposed, “Let me know when you’re ready and I’ll come back down with the elevator. I doubt that card will let you upstairs.”
That said, Quin headed towards the elevator and that shower.

Will explained that he hadn’t even really known that Haven existed before this and Quin nodded, ”They do a lot of community outreach work to help mutants, but most people don’t see community outreach and picture a place like this.”
As for a place to stay, Will looked exhausted, and Quin could only imagine she looked at least as bad. Even if she thought hard, Quin couldn’t think of a time when she’d used her powers so extensively or often in her life and it had taken its toll.
The elevator arrived and Will and Quin moved inside. The doors shut, the elevator started moving and Will spoke. I’ve only ever really peeked in, but I feel like the dorms are a bunk set-up and if they’re using the gyms and classrooms it’ll be a cot. The offer was sincere. Least I can do. I’ve also got food.”
Still, they could see what there was to offer.
The doors opened and Quin stepped out of the elevator and waited for Will to follow. ”Let me see…” she said, looking at the card for a number, finding it, and moving down the hall.
Eventually they found the room and it was indeed a dorm with a couple of bunks, but it was impossible to tell at the moment whether or not anyone else was going to be staying there. If Quin had to guess she’d have said yes with the fact that they were using the classrooms and gym as well, but who knew. There was however some folded t-shirts and pants similar to the ones the security guys had been wearing folded on one of the beds.
”Looks like they rolled out the red carpet.” she said. ”And you’re lucky, it’s apparently a dress down day so there’s no need for a suit.”
”Showers are down that way by the gym, card should get you in.” She paused for a minute, ”If you’re hungry or there’s a bunch of Michael’s security goons taking up space, just text, I think I’ve got just about enough energy to toss a couple frozen pizzas in the oven.”

Continued from “Macchiatos, Meeples, and Mayhem”
While they stood there in the lobby of Haven, waiting for the concierge to get everything squared away, Quin had to wonder exactly what was so important in and around Haven that this kind of security was necessary.
Sure, Quin had thought earlier about the fact that there was more to the place than it seemed from the outside, but an entire paramilitary security group camping out in the lobby suggested that things went a bit deeper than she’d even suspected.
Those were thoughts for later though. For now, Quin reminded herself to simply be grateful for the extra security and the fact that this really probably was one of the safest places she could be.
Soon enough, Will had a keycard and that meant he had somewhere safe to be. The concierge started to give directions and Quin shook her head, ”I’ll take him. It’s not a problem.” she said and headed for the elevators.
”I’m upstairs and I get the feeling that’s going to take us down so go ahead and scan it. ” she said, pointing at the card and fingerprint scanner built into the wall next to the double elevator doors. As they waited for the elevator that was indeed indicating that it was going to go down, Quin crossed her arms, “I was joking about the broom closet earlier, but there’s a lot more people here than I expected. Good because more people are safe…but all that’s down there are some classrooms, the gym, and some dorms.” She said as the elevator doors opened.

”Hopefully that drink goes better than the last one you offered in return for services rendered.” Quin joked when Will said he owed Michael a drink.
Michael, it turned, out hadn’t eaten anything since morning and that just wouldn’t do with a long day or night of ass-kicking on the docket, so Quin nodded, ”I’ll tell the front desk to bring something quick out for you.” That would surely be faster than running up to her apartment and raiding the pantry. “There’s probably some apocalypse closet full of food that I didn’t know about hidden somewhere. They’ll figure it out.”
Apparently driving a tank meant that you got door service when you went somewhere, even in Manhattan. As they stopped, Quin noticed armed security outside the doors. “Never seen that before…” she said as Michael rolled down her window and was immediately recognized by the guards.
Quin opened the door and climbed out of the truck (literally climbed) as Michael asked about how things were holding. Apparently there had been trouble but Haven had not only been prepared for the threat, they’d taken in people who needed somewhere safe to go off the street. Now that was what Quin liked to hear. “Thank you Michael…I definitely owe you one too.” she said as she moved towards the building.
Turning to Will as she grabbed the door handle, Quin gave him a tight little smile, ”If you weren’t already completely freaked out, get ready” she said, assuming Will hadn’t been inside Haven before.
The lobby was…impressive. Quin assumed it had been designed so, to ensure that people were intimidated the second they walked in. It was marble and fancy and all the things that you’d expect a building in this part of the city to be.
Quin made her way across the lobby, making sure Will was following because there was a lot more going on than usual and the security presence outside was echoed inside the building and they were all wearing the logo that had been on the card Michael had given Quin that day at the self-defense class. Who exactly was Michael anyway? If things hadn’t been such an absolutely disaster that day, Quin might have been significantly more freaked out than she already was.
Making her way to the concierge desk…because of course they were still there…Quin said, “Michael Hunter is outside in her tank and she asked for some food to be sent out. Also, this is Will, Michael called ahead to see about a room?”

Michael, it appeared, was even more well connected at Haven than Quin had realized. It also appeared that somewhere in the building there was a room with a radio like the one in the truck.
In the time Quin had lived there since the whole…incident at Hunt’s point she’d stayed on the outskirts of everything that was actually involved with Haven, but living in the apartments there she’d seen and heard enough to know that things were probably a bit more than they seemed.
Still. A quick conversation later and Will had a room.
Well, all of that was settled now, it seemed. Quin had always known that there were various rooms and things like that around for when people visited on Haven business. It sounded like most of the fancy ones were in use though.
”If they try to put you in a broom closet with a sleeping bag I’ve got a perfectly comfortable couch.” Quin said, “I doubt they’d do that though, their reputation couldn’t take the blow.” .
Speaking of, they were getting close now, “Do you need anything from inside? Have you eaten today?” Quin asked Michael, the least she could do after everything was snag her some granola bars or a bottle of water.

The plan seemed more like loose guidelines than an actual plan of any kind, but Quin supposed that Michael could have been holding things back. It would have been smart to handle it that way considering the fact that she was talking to two people who weren’t involved in the operation in any way, shape, or form.
Still, Michael was trying to contain the chaos and look for Akh at the same time? Suddenly the redhead felt a bit guilty for pulling her away from the more important business at hand. Still…she’d needed to get home one way or another and this was the safest and fastest way.
Michael also mentioned that she was working with some Mystics to hunt the Mystic and that probably made sense.
Will had the same idea as Quin and she was about to compliment him on his good sense when Michael went and suggested that Will hole up at Haven. Quin had had the thought several times that it was likely the most secure place in the city and it wasn’t the worst idea if someone actually wanted to be safe.
”She’s probably right…” Quin said, glancing over at Will, ”They’ve got all sorts of places for people to stay.” It was true, ”I’m sure Michael easily has the pull to get you a spot at least until the worst of this blows over.”

We?
Will had sure done a bit of a 180 degree turn from, ‘I don’t tell anyone I have powers’ to ‘Let’s take on a mummy.’ Give some folks a taste of heroics and they couldn’t get enough, she supposed.
Then again, maybe he meant a more general ‘we’ like, ‘we, the citizens of New York.’
Then Will asked if either she or Michael knew any magic and Quin actually laughed, ”You have seen the full range and extent of everything I can do.” she answered truthfully, ”I don’t think I could lift more than a lego right now without passing out.”
Pausing for a moment, she frowned a bit, ”And I’m not involved in any of this.” she added, gesturing vaguely at the truck around them, ”Michael taught a self-defense class in my building and I went to it, that’s all.” she hoped she hadn’t misrepresented herself in some way as someone who had any clue what was going on with anything on Michael’s level.
They weren’t looking for a mummy though, the woman apparently hadn’t aged a day in 5000 years. Obviously Akh had bigger fish to fry, but the absolutely whiplash of waking up in modern day New York had to have been intense…and she’d immediately started recruiting people to her cause.
Michael continued though. This woman wanted to find a person to give time powers to? A person who could bring living gods forward in time?
There was a point that everything became too much and Quin figured that she’d just reached it. ”Oh…is that all…” she said a bit weakly.
Michael seemed confident there were enough heavy hitters in New York to head off any issues and the way that he said ‘troubleshooters’ indicated that the language was far more literal than figurative.
”So what I’m hearing is not to leave the Haven building for the next week….” That was fine, if her plans worked out like she was hoping she wouldn’t even be done showering and sleeping by then and by the time she woke up everything would be fine.

Michael explained how her two forms worked and Quin nodded. Something about whatever the Mystic had done had split powers that Michael already had into the two forms. And the female form looked just like Michael’s wife? And Michael had a kid. Quin didn’t know why all of this was a surprise to her, but Michael had always seemed like the stoic loner type in their short acquaintance.
”Bet that was a surprise the first time.” Quin said, but she couldn’t help but think how unluckily Michael had been. To have been caught up in the same thing Quin had and run afoul of a Mystic like that was just awful luck. Maybe that was the curse of being involved, when you were constantly in and around wild and dangerous situations, wild and dangerous things could happen.
Quin thought she had probably been that sort of person before. How else would she have ended up like she had? It was weird to think of herself in that way though because in her current iteration Quin couldn’t imagine going out of her way to get in the middle of something like this.
Michael was knee deep in this though and as Will asked for more info, Quin turned her attention to the front seat. The more Michael said, the more Quin frowned, shaking her head. Today was supposed to have been a day to get caught up on her work, have a cup of (surprisingly tasty) coffee, and maybe have a nice conversation with a new friend. Suddenly they were talking about ancient beings once encased in stone trying to ‘bring back’ a King of some kind. At what point was it acceptable for everything to be too much?
”So…what happens if Akh manages to do what she’s trying to do?” It was the obvious question, right?
