The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Complicated, yes, but lofty?
Quin didn’t think that there was anything particularly lofty about what she was trying to do and luckily her ridiculous outburst had hidden the blush that had sprung to her cheeks when Will had used that word.
New York was almost a world of its own and while things had apparnetly improved over the years, there was still a long way to go if things were ever really going to be fair. People had to step up.
That was absolutely beside the point now though and Quin couldn’t help but notice that Will had not joined her in her laughter. She really hoped she hadn’t upset him with her poorly timed outburst.
Still, she’d already apologized so she didn’t do it again. Quin did feel more than a little guilty as she straightened up with another little wince though. “I need to have better self-control….at least for the next few days.” she said, moving to the freezer to grab one of the ice packs she kept there for when and if aikido training went poorly, or for when she got her ass kicked by a very small woman.
Will pointed out that there were other words besides absurd to describe the day and Quin almost started laughing again, managing this time to just chuckle a little. ”And I think those words are definitely appropriate in this situation.” She said, tucking the ice pack up against her side. ”I’m pretty sure I used some of those words today…” she added with a smile.
As for it being Wednesday, Quin sighed dramatically, “At least we’re closer to Friday than Monday now?” she said.
“Thanks though…” she added after a moment, knowing that she was changing topics “I wouldn’t call what I’m doing lofty though.”

Quin nodded when Will said he might take some ibuprofen after all, for after whatever they’d given him at the hospital had worn off. She could get it for him in a minute. ”Probably a good idea.” she said. She needed to look up what she needed to do. Did you ice bruised ribs?
Will protested the idea that he might have a taste for heroics, and rather thought that medical grade glue would be handy for kitchen accidents or an emergency. ”Like a 5,000 year old sorceress hellbent on bringing ancient Gods into modern day New York?”
It sounded so ridiculous when Quin said it out loud that it made her want to laugh. Maybe a bit hysterically. She didn’t do that though because laughing was apparently one of the things she was going to be unable to do for the next little while without discomfort.
Will apparently didn’t mind being…lean though and she almost immediately broke her recent prohibition against laughing when he continued. Apparently altitudinous was an appropriate word for her though ”Because it’s overly complicated and too long?” she said, unable to help herself from giggling just a little.
She’d also apparently gotten under Will’s skin a bit with her sort-of-compliment and she really did want to laugh when he pointed out that he hadn’t had a choice with his current shirt. Instead she just shook her head and tried to think of things that were decidedly less funny or ridiculous than this whole thing.
Then Will asked about the text story, definitely to change the subject and Quin couldn’t help it any longer, she burst out laughing, wrapping her arms around her middle. Maybe everything had just caught up with her, but between laughs she managed to say, ”It’s a long distance romance thing…that started as a wrong number text…he’s a firefighter trainee and she’s an art history major…”
Finally managing to pull herself together Quin shook her head, ”I’m so sorry, I’m not laughing at you. This whole day is just so absurd.”

Would they keep going in text style? Quin shrugged, ”Whatever they do, I hope they keep going…the suspense is killing me and there hasn’t been an update for a couple of weeks”
Will seemed to accept that she was fine, and with the exception of her sore ribs, Quin really did feel like she’d gotten out of the mess today relatively unscathed. Sure she had other cuts and bruises, but she hadn’t gotten stabbed with an actual knife and been bleeding everywhere.
Will turned so Quin could see the bandage and it did look like everything had held pretty well. It also made sense that it was really sore and would probably be worse the next day. Hopefully no more heroics would be in order, ”You want anything? I’ve got ibuprofen?” she offered, nodding towards the bathroom and medicine cabinet.
Will pointed out that he might need to get some of the glue they’d used to keep on hand and Quin raised an eyebrow, ”Got a little taste of heroics and can’t wait to get back out there huh? Going for a matching set?”
As for the rest, Quin laughed again at Will's self-deprecation, wrapping her arm around her middle as she did so, ”It’s all about perspective Will, you need to stop saying things like ‘string bean’ and say, ‘wiry’ or ‘lean’. My Mom told me ages ago that, ‘freakishly tall’ was an inappropriate descriptor and ‘altitudinous’ was far better.”
She smirked her own little smirk, ”Or just start buying your shirts a size smaller. I’ve definitely seen worse.”

There weren’t any immediate suggestions from Will about what Quin should watch as her first anime. That was fine, at the moment Quin couldn’t remember the last time she’d even had her TV on. When she’d couldn’t sleep she did often find herself mindlessly scrolling through shows, trying to find something to watch. It could be nice to have something different.
Will had noticed the lack of dance videos too. Sure, things evolved, but Quin had always thought that the videos were unique. Quin wasn’t much of a dancer herself, but it had been cool to see people who were doing their thing so effortlessly and it so many different ways even when it was the same dance to the same song.
“The one I’ve been following isn’t even voiced…it started out as a wrong number text, and the girl who’s writing it is also working on making it a book…It’s super good.” she said, “I don’t think it’s one of those silly AI generated ones.”
Quin couldn’t help but notice that Will looked relieved when she compared his shows to campy B-Movies. Was it supposed to have been weirder that he was into Japanese camp? Everyone had their thing.
At her offer to take his plate, Will simply got up and gathered his things so Quin made her way to the kitchen. It wasn’t like the plates were all that dirty, and as she put them into the dishwasher Will spoke again.
It spoke volumes that Quin wasn’t quite sure which scar Will was talking about and she turned to lean against the counter, “Mine?” she said, subconsciously reaching up to touch her cheek, “Just a scratch, looked way worse than it actually was.” Quin’s ribs had definitely gotten the worst if everything.
She couldn’t see Will’s arm from where she was standing, ”What about yours? You did an awful lot of… activity after you got patched up.” she said, then grinned.
“Though, you’re gonna have to start wearing shorter sleeves if you want to show it off.”

“Well, I finished all the seasons of the other stuff…” Quin said when Will pointed out she needed to at least try watching an anime sometime.
”Think of something good for the uninitiated and I’ll see what I can do.”
Will’s tastes in ClickClack creators ran surprisingly similar to Quin’s own and she nodded, ”I used to like the dances, but they almost never see them anymore. I follow a couple of law school people…but they’re generally more concerned with showing off what they’re wearing to class than school itself.”
She thought for a second, “Have you seen the accounts that do stories via made up text messages? There have been a couple of really good ones…I’d catch myself going to check for updates each day to see what happened…”
As for the…whatever it was that Will said he liked, it sounded like it was just action adventure stuff? With armor and silly bad guys? ”Like Horror B-movies or old detective films? The camp is part of the charm.” That made sense. ”Sounds fun.” Hey, if Will could let her get away with silly romance TV with nothing more than a teasing grin, she could be gracious about this.
Realizing her pizza was gone and so was her tea, Quin stood again and snagged her plate and cup, ”You done?” she asked, planning to take the dishes and put away the leftover pizza.

That grin told Quin that Will knew exactly what show she was talking about and the fact that he hadn’t reacted that way to any of the other shows meant he either didn’t know what they were or that Archvilles reputation had preceded it.
“What? she said, heat flooding her cheeks, “Whatever you’ve heard, it’s actually really good…”
Will accepted the question being turned on him with good grace though and explained that his television tastes ran more to the sci-fi and anime side of things.
“I’ve heard of the space one, I think…” Quin said, “It’s supposed to be good...but I am completely clueless when it comes to anime.”
Not that the stuff wasn’t popular, there was even a manga section at the NYU library…Quin just hadn’t ever had the time or inkling to get into it.
Clickclack and doomscrolling were absolutely things Quin could relate to though and she nodded her understanding there. ”Any favorite creators?”
Then Will brought up a word that Quin had never heard before. “What’s that?” she asked, it kind of sounded like one of the broths at a ramen place she liked to go, but surely Will hadn’t changed subjects so quickly.

More sensitive, not more delicate. That made sense, Quin decided, nodding her head as Will assuaged her fears about hot food and drinks. He even echoed his thoughts that he wouldn’t have drank something too hot for simple propriety's sake, “Well good, because a fresh slice of pizza from John’s is definitely an experience.” Hopefully the little shop had fared alright in all the chaos of the day.
“Thanks for explaining.” she added a bit sheepishly.
Will promised not to tell anyone about her preference for Deep Dish pizza and Quin smiled her thanks. “Thanks..It might have been enough to get me ran out of the city and then where would you go for the view?”
It was apparently Will’s turn to ask questions now and Quin laughed, wincing a bit at how sore it made her ribs to laugh. Quin knew her taste in television was questionable, but with as hard as she worked at school, and how serious things were in the Senator’s office more often than not…
“Silly stuff, mostly…there’s this baking competition that I mostly watch for the vibes. It’s super wholesome and everyone gets along and just wants everyone to do their very best. I was like 3 episodes behind…” she explained, that one wasn’t so bad.
“I also like medical dramas…even of my favorite has probably been on too long. ” That was a bit silly, but still not the worst.
“And I’d somehow managed to miss the entire last season of Archville.” The show was wildly popular, and generally well reviewed, but it was also full of campy romance, modern music set to strings, and enough 1800s romance to satisfy the silliest of romantics.
That was the embarrassing one.
“What do you watch?” she followed up with quickly, hoping to keep Will from having too much time to judge.

A fair trade. Quin nodded as Will looked back out the window and Quin did the same for a moment.
“Wonder how long we’re gonna be quasi-neighbors here?”
Quin shrugged, ”I guess it depends on how right or wrong Michael was about how prepared they were for whatever that Egyptian woman is planning.” It still kind of blew Quin’s mind that all of this was actually happening.
“I know I said I’ve got mixed feelings about everything Michael is mixed up in…but all those good guys with guns downstairs do make me feel better…at least for tonight.”
They just kept circling back to the serious stuff. Quin supposed it was to be expected with the way the day had gone and as she started her second slice of pizza she couldn’t help but wonder if it was reasonable to hole up at home for the next while. ”I’ll probably have class tomorrow…” she said, running a hand through her hair with a sigh.
Pizza was a far better topic of conversation though, and Quin gave Will an incredulous look when he said he’d never even tried John’s.
“Oh absolutely though you should definitely get a fresh slice and eat it on the way or something…it’s so hot that the cheese is like, molten…wait, would that be a problem?“ she said, head tilting slightly with curiosity. ”The tea wasn’t too hot was it?” she added, eyes widening slightly. Surely not, surely he wouldn’t have drank it just to be polite if it was a problem.
Quin’s comment about Chicago didn’t go unnoticed though and Will’s look had her grinning before he even started speaking. He’d never had a proper deep dish, which made sense if he hadn’t been to Chicago, but it appeared that she was going to get a pass anyway because apparently Hawaiian pizza had originated in Canada.
Quin winced at that, but also couldn’t help but laugh a little, ”Well, your secret is safe with me…can I count on the same discretion?” she said

Will didn’t seem too concerned about his employment situation, so Quin let the topic drop. He did pose an interesting question though…things like this weren’t exactly uncommon in New York these days. We’re insurance rates just sky high for businesses or did the city step in to help when an unmitigated disaster swept through?
“It does seem kind of sad that I’m pretty much the only one who gets to see it…” Quin said of the view, looking out over the city and The Park again as she finished her first slice of pizza and paused for a minute to drink some more of her tea.
“So as long as you’re willing to hold those flash cards, listen to me practice opening or closing statements, or bring one of those brown sugar things from today….I can probably share the view.” she teased. Truth be told, she was more than a little excited at the prospect of some company, assuming that once all the craziness of current events were over Will didn’t realize how weird everything about her was and decide to do what most other people did. Time would tell, Quin supposed, but hope never hurt.
The pizza question was honestly kind of loaded. Pizza was an absolute institution in New York and Quin could remember a story or two where people had legitimately come to blows over where to get their favorite slice. Will apparently understood the importance of the question and Quin laughed and shook her head when he called the question dangerous.
Will’s answer was good though, nostalgia was a hell of a drug and in reality most of the pizza in the area was perfectly good. The question was turned on Quin and she smiled, ”I like John’s on Bleeker street, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with Joes….” she said levely. “Buuuuut, my parents live in Chicago now… ” she said a bit sheepishly. A lot of New Yorkers didn’t even consider deep dish to be pizza, but it was so good.

Will pointed out that at least for the time being he didn’t have a first job and that significantly freed up his schedule. That was really rough, presumably he needed a job. ”Maybe things weren’t as bad as they seemed, or maybe they’ll want help getting everything customer ready again?” Quin offered in what she hoped was a helpful way.
Still, it seemed like Quin had a study buddy if she wanted, and it was always a lot easier when there was someone else to hold you accountable for actually doing the studying…
“Yeah…not much for stars.” Quin confirmed with a little sigh, it seemed like forever since she’d seen the actual night sky. ”You should see it when it snows though…” Maybe she was underestimating the view a bit…like she’d gotten used to it over the past few years and wasn’t appreciating it like she should…
She and Will were absolutely on the same page as far as SUPER was concerned. Sure, Michael seemed like a decent enough person, but Will’s point was absolutely valid. All it took was the right government official deciding that a more “proactive” stance was necessary.
Quin tried to think about what that would be like, having to worry about your powers all the time under the threat of having an actual collar snapped around your neck. Sure, the official government line had been that only dangerous mutants had been put into the camps…but there had been children there.
It was a lot to think about after everything that had already happened, and when Will echoed her sentiment about the pizza, Quin happily took the opportunity to change the subject. “There really is something about the oven stuff…” she said with a little laugh, then snagged a second piece and made her way back to the table.
“So… Quin said, casting around for something else to say that wasn’t related to past lives or the trauma of the day, they could go back to that after they’d eaten if they really wanted, but food conversation deserved to be lighter. “What’s your favorite actual pizza place though…?” she asked. Surely Will had one, it was a well debated topic in the city and most people had an answer ready.

They were big goals and it was going to take a ton of hard work to obtain them.
”I know what it’s like to feel completely helpless against something that feels too big to fight. I didn’t have anyone to help me…so I just figured maybe I can help keep other people from feeling that way. ”
Will offered to help her study and Quin had to smile again, he was really impressed with the view.
”Be careful what you offer…” she said, ”You’ll feel like you’ve taken on a second job and I doubt any view is worth that.”
Will offered a plate and Quin took it, then set about getting herself a piece of pizza as Will commented on SUPER.
“Rubs me the wrong way too.” she admitted, moving to the side so that Will could get to the pizza.
”I don’t like the government being involved in anything like that. They’re the same ones who thought putting mutants in camps with shock collars was a great idea.”
Sure, that had been a long time ago, but still…Quin shook her head and took a bite of the pizza. It was piping hot and tasted a little bit like heaven. Holding the pizza up and gesturing with it a bit, Quin smiled, ”This, on the other hand, really was a good idea…”

Even being adjacent to the riots had to have been pretty intense, Quin thought, especially being a teenager and a mutant with newly realized powers. The articles had all made it sound like the initiating event had been bad, but the way things had blown up after had been even worse. Mutant vs Cops, Cops vs Mutants, people vs each other on both sides. Generalized chaos similar to what they’d experienced today.
Criminal defense sounded like a tough gig? Quin shrugged her shoulders, ”It can be. Everyone deserves their day in court. One of the things that Haven does is provide legal support for mutants who are wrongly accused or discriminated against. I thought that I might like to get into doing something like that eventually.” she said, ”Probably going to have to do at least a few years of public defense or interning somewhere before they’ll hire me on though.”
The pizza actually looked and smelled really good and Will even agreed. Realistically speaking he was probably right too…New York‘s pizza culture was wild, but the frozen section at the store wouldn’t have been nearly as big as it was if the pies there weren’t popular.
Will elaborated on his experience with the riots and Quin figured she knew exactly what video he was talking about. His sharper than usually senses had kept him out of trouble though, and he’d never really gone back. At least until today.
As for plates? “That cabinet over there…” Quin said nodding to one over her shoulder. The help would be nice, Quin admitted, all of this bending and twisting made it clear that reaching was going to be against the rules for at least a day or two.
Will asked about Michael then and Quin leaned against the counter as she waited for the plates, ”It’s like I said. Michael was teaching a self defense class a few months ago and recognized me. We haven’t talked much about how I knew them before but Michael basically told me I had been a garbage fighter back then too and that I needed to diversify. That was the first time someone who knew me had said anything other than super nice things so I instantly asked if they’d train me.” Quin shrugged, ”Michael is a harsh teacher, but I’ve learned quite a bit…and now they’ve started farming me out as a punching dummy to others.
Quin paused there for a moment and frowned, ”I knew about Black-Tac, but not the extent that they were embedded here…and I had absolutely no idea about their involvement with SUPER.” she said quietly.

“See you get it.” Quin said with the same grin, keeping pace with the joke and picking up her cup once Will had released her hand. Will had said he didn’t have many people, and lord knew that Quin needed more friends. Who better to be friends with than someone who had already gone out of their way to help you more than once. Will had also, Quin noticed, admitted his part in the heroics earlier in the day.
The thanks Will offered was quieter though and Quin shrugged, “It’s really nothing.”
Good was an interesting choice of word for how Quin was feeling now that Will had dropped the buffer his powers had been providing between her injuries and her perception of the pain.
”Definitely back to normal…I’d forgotten what you said about being a little numb and now that I’m not it’s…interesting.” she said.
Will reminded Quin that he wasn’t actually from New York and she nodded at the little detail. He’d apparently moved here during the trouble.
The riots? He’d moved here during the riots. Talk about culture shock. Quin didn’t know anything about any of it first hand. Surely she’d been around or involved with it all as a cop, but it was just a big blank space in her mind. Had anything about it come up in her classes? ”Yeah, “ she said, ”It actually comes up a lot.” she said with a slight frown, ”Hell of an introduction to New York.” she said, lacking context for much else.
”I remember the camps being a thing.” They’d happened around the time that Quin had graduated from high school, something that felt far more recent than it actually was. ”But they didn’t make the news a lot back home. I didn’t realize how awful it all was until Law School though.”
What kind of law was she studying? ”Criminal defense.” she said, ”Though contract law is tempting. It seems boring and pays like crazy…”
At that moment, the timer on Quin’s phone went off to indicate that the pizza was done.
Up Quin got, maybe a little too quickly for all her reupped aches and pains and hissed through her teeth a bit at just how sore those ribs were. The bruise had looked pretty gnarly when she’d taken her shower.
Still though, she made her way to the kitchen and managed to get the pizza out without offending any of her injuries, got the pizza out, and set about cutting it.
”Come and get it.” she said, ”The frozen food aisle’s finest.” And to be honest, it didn’t look bad at all.
”You didn’t get mixed up in any of the actual riot stuff, did you?” Quin asked. She’d seen videos and read articles, that whole thing had been really ugly.

Will didn’t make it a habit to tell people that he was a mutant. Quin understood, a lot of people did that. Sometimes it was just easier to blend if you could.
It also wasn’t like she ran around proudly proclaiming her genetic status to anyone and everyone. The difference was that she definitely didn’t go out of her way to keep it under wraps, and anyone who paid attention would have been able to pick up on it really easily.
Again, she was going to speak, but Will continued on and Quin subconsciously tensed just a bit as his hand closed around hers and he presumably began to undo what he had done earlier. Quin didn’t know how bad she was going to hurt, but by all expectations it would be more than she did right now so it was probably better to be prepared.
This time as he worked, Will spoke, explaining that it wasn’t particularly heavy lifting for him to use his powers, but that the more intensive use earlier in the day had taken quite a bit out of him.
That made sense, Quin supposed, as did the fact that in order to be able to use his powers he’d have to have people around who knew he had powers…and there just weren’t very many of those.
Things were changing now, and Quin could feel the dull, almost disconnected ache that had been present since Will had used his powers in the church growing in intensity. She tried not to think about it, instead focusing on what Will was explaining.
General sentiment had been rough when Will had been in school and despite the fact that he wasn’t looking at her, Quin gave a nod of sympathy. High school was rough in the best circumstances, throwing in powers and living in New York would definitely have complicated things.
Where she’d been and when she’d been, Quin had been something of a novelty. It had helped that she had already run with a highly accepting crowd and spent most of her summers traveling and with hippies.
The ache in her side was definitely worse now, and Quin had to hope that Will was almost done putting things back the way they should be. Suddenly though she realized that she felt…different? Normal? Quin could remember Will saying that she’d be a little numb as long as his powers were working on her and now that they weren’t…interesting.
Will looked up now and Quin looked back as he spoke and she nodded. “That makes sense.” she said, ”I didn’t grow up here, and people mostly just thought I was a bit of a novelty.”
She paused for a second then smiled, ”Also, now you’ve got at least one person you don’t have to be careful around.” That was better than nobody right? ”And I’m clearly easily bribed if you’re ever having a rough time.”

Lee had plenty of suggestions for how Quin could make sure that she’d never be without some kind of plastic to use. They were good suggestions and Quin did tend to make sure she carried things with her all the time. She’d never even thought of the hair tie idea or the phone case. It was a little embarrassing that Lee had thought of them so quickly. ”Those are all good ideas, I’ll figure out how to incorporate them.” None of that would provide her with much volume to work with, but maybe she could work on doing more with less…
It also made sense, how would anyone in any of these fights know what she could do? Surely nobody would think to remove something as innocuous as plastic from the area.
Lee kept talking though and pointed out that there were times when she couldn’t depend on using her powers. Quin tilted her head at that, what kind of times would those be? She’d heard a time or two about people who could negate mutant powers, and she’d heard about the ways the police detained mutants with strong powers, but none of that seemed to be particularly likely to happen.
“I guess I have been too.” Quin said, “It’s a lot sometimes to have all that time missing…but the alternative to being here and dealing with it all is that nobody came after me that night.” A fuzzy memory resurfaced…there hadn’t been any plastic around her, either when she woke up or where they’d put her after the fact. Maybe Lee had an even better point than Quin had thought…
That was just the thing though. ”That’s why I’m doing this. So that I don’t have to wait for someone else to do the saving.”
