The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

When Kevin spoke, Lee looked up at him. Then over at Tarin as it looked like he was trying to figure out what to say. But unlike earlier in the night when they were talking about this, when Kevin was asking questions, Tarin didn't look nearly panicked.
That was good. And he answered after a few moments.
When Kevin looked over at her again, Lee nodded in agreement.
"Talking to someone? What does that mean?"
"Just what it sounds like," Lee told Kevin gently. "I've been through and done a lot in my life. At one point, I needed more help to deal with it all than your dad was able to give. So I went to speak with a doctor who had experience treating mutants."
"As much as I wanted to, I didn't think I could help Tarin with everything that he needed after the collapse. So I asked him to see the same doctor." Lee turned to give Tarin a smile.

Kevin didn't say yes to the puzzle, but he also didn't say no. He just kind of stood there looking at the puzzle. And as Tarin said, they were doing fairly well with the puzzle.
But then he silently sat down, leaning in to look at the puzzle and its pieces more intently and Lee went back to trying to put more pieces together as Kevin ate his apple.
Only for him to ask if this was the Beetle Man puzzle from when he was younger.
Looking up from putting a few pieces together to form a foot, Lee looked over at Kevin and nodded. "Is this the one that was a little more difficult?" Lee asked. "You had a few of the superhero puzzles that looked similar, so they kind of blend together in my memory a bit."
Shooting a quick smile across the table at Tarin before going back to the puzzle. With everything that she had told him that day, Lee honestly hadn't really expected to see Kevin out of his room again that night. At least not for any real length of time. Yet here he was sitting at the table with her and Tarin while they did a puzzle.
And reaching out to try putting a piece in place.
Well, Lee thought, Tarin had to believe now that Kevin's thoughts or feelings toward him hadn't changed all that much (if at all) with what he had learned. He was even sitting between her and Tarin at the table.
"Maybe we could see about getting more puzzles, if we're likely to do this more often," Lee mused.
And for the next few minutes, the three of them sat working on the puzzle in silence.
At least until Kevin decided to speak. "How are you going to make sure that never happens to you, Tarin? Mum's sure that it's not going to happen," Kevin said, looking back and forth between the two adults. "Is that because of what you're going to do, or because of something else?"

Looking back, that night at the bar had been great. And especially after the bar. Though at the time, once Matt had broken that moment, the tunnel vision, whatever you wanted to call it, there had been confusion and uncertainty. All because of the thought that they shouldn't like each other.
They had been able to behave themselves, even the very next morning, well enough that people didn't realize what was going on with them for two weeks. Well, other than Kevin realizing that she and Tarin liked each other based on how much time they spent together.
But they had been able to do that, yet tonight they were having issues even when trying to do a puzzle.
When Kevin questioned how they would be for the rest of the evening, Tarin invited him to help with the puzzle. Which…was actually a rather smart idea, Lee thought. Things should be much easier to manage if Kevin was in the same room.
"Why a puzzle? We haven't done puzzles in years."
Lee shrugged as she looked over at her son. "To do something different?" Lee explained. "And we didn't want anything too involved or difficult after the talk earlier."

The way things were going now was so polar opposite to how it was when Tarin had walked into the apartment really not all that long ago. The atmosphere then had been tense and somber.
And now they were laughing because Lee had been so distracted she hadn't even realized Kevin had come out of his room declaring how 'gross' they were being.
"Do you remember at the bar?" Lee asked, referring to when both of them had completely lost track of where they were. And that had been before they were even admitting to to each other (or themselves) that there actually were feelings there.
"It's not often, but it does happen," Lee continued, smiling a happy smile across the table at Tarin.
At that moment, Kevin called from the kitchen, asking if he was able to come out of the kitchen. As Tarin laughed, Lee shook her head. "Yes Kevin, it's safe."
Only then did Kevin make his way out of the kitchen again. "Am I going to have to stay locked in my room, or will it safe for me to come out again later?"

Normally, it was second nature for Lee to feel when someone was approaching her. Especially when she was in an area with so few people around. Especially when she was at home where she could tell even what part of which room they were in most of the time based on direction and distance.
And yet Lee hadn't even noticed Kevin moving in his room, nevermind leaving it until he had spoken.
Normally, the only time that would happen at home was if Kevin had put his shield up or if she had shut off her siphoning, which she hadn't done. And the moment that Lee had heard Kevin's voice behind her, she'd noticed his energy.
When Tarin started laughing, Lee couldn't hold her own in anymore. "Didn't I tell you that you're distracting?" She asked while still laughing a bit. "And that's true, it could have been. But I'm also pretty sure that I've heard him saying it's, well maybe not gross, but embarrassing when we hold hands outside."

Yes, Lee probably should have stayed on the safe topic of cleaning out the fridge. Or even simply the puzzle.
But then again, despite the fact that thinking had gotten easier when Tarin was in the kitchen and that they had been talking about something completely different, it had felt like the words just came out.
"What can I say?" Lee asked with a shrug, not hearing a bedroom door open. "Your sexiness is very distracting."
"God mum! You don't have to be so gross!"
Lee's eyes widened slightly as she heard her son's voice behind her. Apparently she had been distracted enough that she hadn't realized he was making his way out of his room until she heard his voice.
"I can always be more gross," Lee responded over her shoulder.
"No, please don't," Kevin pleaded as he practically ran to the kitchen.

The night that Lee had burst into Tarin's room after Robert had left the apartment had started out very much in anger. That had quickly changed once she realized that Tarin wasn't wearing a shirt despite the fact that at the time Lee was not admitting to herself that she could have feelings for Tarin. Because it wasn't something that was supposed to have happened.
Lee was so glad that it had happened, and that their first night going to the bar together had shown them, without a doubt, that there was something there between them.
"I'm sure you did like it," Lee said as she looked up at Tarin, some of the blush still on her face. "Where that was going is not going to help get this puzzle done. Or behave."
It was true, because those thoughts and feelings were, in large part, what had started all of this.
Turning back to the puzzle, Lee managed to find another couple pieces and fit them into place before she spoke again in a whisper. "Because being in different rooms doesn't stop me from thinking about how sexy you are."

Lee took a deep breath and shook her head, the grin still on her face, as Tarin pointed out that they didn't really try too hard most of the time. "Yeah, I don't try very hard either," Lee admitted.
It really was just easier to go with it. Tonight was a perfect demonstration of that. Nevermind that it was also far more enjoyable to just not try very hard to stop it when things between the two of them were like they had been tonight.
"Well, technically that would work," Lee said, the exaggeration clearly evident in her voice.
But then Tarin brought up the fact that, though it had been for a very different reason, a closed door hadn't exactly stopped her before.
Lee blushed, her eyes dropping back down to the puzzle as she tucked some hair behind an ear. "Well, no…but that was a totally different situation," Lee tried to argue. "And while being in different rooms does make it easier to think more…appropriately, it doesn't stop-"
Lee cut herself off, eyes back on the puzzle. That was just putting them right back into the situation they were trying to avoid.

"Sorry," Lee said softly, though her voice didn't sound very remorseful. The grin was still on her face as well.
Dropping her eyes to the table, Lee half heartedly tried a couple of pieces. "Would you have rather I lied?" Lee asked, glancing over at Tarin briefly before back to the puzzle. "That I got a wave of inspiration and suddenly knew where the pieces I needed were?" Somehow, Lee didn't think he would have.
When Tarin spoke again, Lee laughed. "I'm not sure that's how it works, Tarin," She told him. "Don't get me wrong, I'm definitely up for trying that. But there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason about when…this….happens to us, so I'm not sure that logical actions will work."

Finally, Tarin started making his way back out of the kitchen. As he came around the corner, Lee looked over her shoulder and smiled at Tarin. Who hadn't brought food out with him.
So that was why he had taken so long; he had eaten in the kitchen. He had been trying to spend more time apart.
Hopefully that would help, Lee couldn't help but think.
"I was able to focus a bit better," Lee said as she smiled at Tarin.
As he sat down, Tarin mentioned that they probably should clean out the fridge before they go shopping for their cooking. "That' a good point. Maybe tomorrow night would be good for that," Lee said, then grinned across the table. "If we can actually be that close to each other tomorrow."

Lee could hear and feel Tarin moving around the kitchen getting his food as she worked on the puzzle.
It was kind of weird, though. There were days where she and Tarin had no issues; they were able to function and be around each other, whether Kevin or others were around or not, and they wouldn't have trouble keeping their hands (and lips) off of each other the entire day.
Then there were other times, like that evening, when no matter what they did, what they talked about, they didn't seem to be able to stop themselves unless there was physical distance between them.
And even then it was difficult.
Now that she had been left on her own, Lee was making half decent progress on the puzzle. Not that she was racing through it or anything, but she was managing to find matching pieces and fit them in quicker than she had been before.
But slowly, the minutes were ticking on, and Tarin had stopped moving in the kitchen. It was just leftovers, all he had to do was put the food on a plate and warm it up, it really shouldn't be taking so long.
Unless he was trying to give them time to cool down. In hopes that the time apart would make things easier.

Lee had offered to help Tarin in the kitchen, offered to help grab food because they often did do that together. Whether they were grabbing the food when all three of them ate together, or putting leftovers away after eating, they had developed an ease of working together in the kitchen (for this, not cooking) where they almost didn't get in each other's way in the narrow space.
And though they often did that together, Lee also knew that Tarin was perfectly capable of doing it on his own.
"You're probably right," Lee agreed with Tarin as she smiled across the table at him as he got up. Because while they often managed to work around each other easily in the kitchen, there were times when they…didn't. And they got rather distracted. Much to Kevin's disgust the couple times he had walked into the kitchen.
So while Tarin made his way into the kitchen to grab food, Lee turned her attention back to the puzzle in front of her. As she worked away, Lee did notice one thing: it was much easier to focus on the puzzle pieces and finding where they went when Tarin wasn't in the room.
Yeah, doing the puzzle, with a table between them, had been a very good idea that night.

"Well yeah," Lee said, her voice more serious than it had been in the previous few minutes. "That's the best kind of bet, isn't it?"
Tarin was dead set on the fact that ice was water, so that since she said that she could skate, he was convinced that meant she had said she can walk on water. "Alright. I guess I should keep in mind that you think ice and water are the same things the next time you ask me to grab you a drink."
Lee's explanation of what the picture on the puzzle they were making didn't seem to help clear things up and help him understand what it was.
But before she was able to try and explain it more, Tarin mentioned that he should probably eat. "That completely slipped my mind." Lee said. "With everything that ended up happening tonight. Kevin and I just had leftovers because they've built up a bit much."

"Of course I'm confident," Lee said matter of factly. "I need to be if I'm going to win our bet, don't I?"
Lee just raised an eyebrow when Tarin tried to claim that she had already said that she was capable of walking on water. Because she had said she could skate. "We both know those are not the same thing," Lee said. She had been trying to show how ridiculous Tarin's claim that she was impervious to cold was. It wasn't fair that he had turned her statement around on her. "The ice on skating rinks is only, at most, an inch or two thick anyway."
Tarin was right. They really would be in trouble if they had to be 'good' all of the time.. Because there were times, days, where they just…couldn't.
Not that Lee wanted to keep her distance from Tarin and 'behave' at those times. But at those times, Lee needed to be close to Tarin, to touch him, to kiss him. Not just desire, there were times when it felt like an actual need, and Lee wasn't sure that at those times she'd be able to stop.
It was overwhelming in an absolutely amazing way.
But again, Tarin was right in that the puzzle wasn't going to do itself. Not that they had to do the puzzle. But they did need to stop talking, and thinking, and feeling like they had for the last couple of minutes. That had been the entire purpose of getting the puzzle out to work on in the first place. "At least if Kevin hasn't jumbled up the puzzles, this is Beetle Man, from Astonish Screen Dimension."

Lee rolled her eyes slightly when Tarin said he had thought she was impervious to cold. "No, I still get cold," Lee told Tarin. "I just know how to dress properly. But when ice is forming on the scarf over my face because the water vapour in my breath is freezing, I try not to go out."
"Next thing I know, you'll be trying to claim that I can walk on water," Lee said lightly as she shook her head.
When they were both leaning forward, toward each other at the table, they were able to get pretty close. But thankfully not close enough, at least with where their chairs were at the moment, to make it easy to kiss. That was a good thing because Lee was sure that if it had been easier to kiss, they would be by now. Again. And with where they were at the table, all Kevin would have to do is look out of his bedroom to see them.
At least on the couch he would have to make his way into the living room; they would get some warning, if either of them were aware enough to notice.
Lee grinned back at Tarin when he emphasized two 'really's to say that they weren't good at focusing on something other than each other so they'd behave. "That is true," Lee agreed. Then she got a playful, teasing gleam in her eye as her grin widened. "Good thing we don't always have to be good."
