The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Normally, Lee would have taken a deep breath and shoved these thoughts, these memories away. Out of the way until Tarin had fallen asleep. Then, and only then, if the memories decided they didn't want to stay buried, she would have gone to her room, or had a shower, and would have cried until she was able to bury it all again.
But Tarin kept telling her that she didn't have to do everything, deal with everything, on her own anymore. That's what this was, wasn't it? Telling Tarin about this would be her not trying to deal with all of it on her own, right?
Lee had to swallow the lump that had formed in her throat before she could speak. "The last one was in the bedroom," Lee said vaguely. Tarin would know what 'one' she was talking about without either of them having to think about those details.
"We weren't together at the time," Lee continued. "The spirit was hiding in his head. I siphoned until he passed out twice without the spirit showing itself. But then he woke up sooner than I would have expected, and he had more energy than he should have had, and I realized I was able to sense at least some extra energy from the spirit when they were merged."
"I thought the spirit had finally come out, and I didn't want it to hide again because that hadn't gotten rid of it yet."
"I was confident with being able to tell where he was, so I broke the cuffs that were holding him to the chair."
Lee paused, her eyes still closed in the dark room. "And I did know exactly where he was. But I forgot about the fact that the arms could reach out from where I felt the body's energy. He grabbed me by the hair." Lee's voice cracked slightly here. "And dragged me across the kitchen for a knife…"

Tarin confirmed that he wouldn't have known what to expect from that first nightmare. From the nightmares in general. And while Lee could only guess what it was that Tarin saw in those nightmares as the memories came back, she knew it was bad. She'd seen the body, despite her attempts to not look at it that night. She still very clearly remembered the bedroom even all these years later. The sight, the smell, the taste.
Lee closed her eyes, pressing her head into Tarin's shoulder trying to swallow the wave of nausea that the memories brought on.
There was so much more. The real question was whether the words would actually be able to come out.
Lee took a breath, but otherwise didn't move. "That spirit had taught me that I had to get better at my people radar," Lee told Tarin after another moment. "But after what it had done, what that bastard had wanted to do, tried to do to me…I couldn't just leave you to deal with it all on your own."

Lee had argued with Tarin in the past about how much of a mess he hadn't been after the merge she'd found him in. At the time she hadn't understood how he had seemed so…okay after all of that.
Since then, Lee had witnessed a number of other times when she would have expected Tarin to react far more strongly than he actually did, such as the day that Robert had punched him.
So Lee supposed that Tarin had been a mess. At least for him. And there had been points in those early days where Tarin had just talked[/i].
And maybe because she had already known the worst. Lee frowned. Yes, she certainly did. Not just from this last merge, but what that spirit had done in the past.
But why had she tried so hard with him after the merge? At the time, Lee didn't think about that, she just did it.
Lee shrugged slightly. "You'd said you had only had one other merge before," Lee ended up saying in explanation. "So I knew you weren't going to be prepared for those. It's still hard when I have those nightmares myself…"

Tarin had said a couple of times in the past that she had been the only one that he had talked about any of this with. Not since he was living through the events, and Lee was sure that Tarin hadn't really ever gone into how he felt.
Well, except for the bits that Tarin had told Dr Rossi. But she had to practically drag every little bit out of him.
"I'm still not sure what makes me so special," Lee started, then paused before continuing. "But as much as I hate what happened, I am glad that you told me."
Tarin really didn't think that she'd done anything wrong by stepping into his nightmare as she had. Though he did think that it was good she woldn't do it again. Because of how much worse they could be.
Lee knew what Tarin was getting at there, she knew the kinds of nightmares he was referring to. "I've seen those kind before, too," Lee finally said, her voice barely above a breath. "I've had those kind before."

Except, Lee did have an idea, if in her own way, from her own traumas and difficulties when she was younger. Her life certainly hadn't always been this happy, and easy, and safe. Getting to this point had taken a lot of luck and a lot of hard work.
"Just because life is easier than ever before, doesn't mean it's easier to deal with emotions from the past," Lee murmured. "Believe me, I've tried to convince myself of that."
When Tarin asked if she had seen all of the people, Lee nodded. There had been quite a few, more than enough that it was unbelievable and horrific that no one had stopped what was happening, no one had stepped in.
And those people had decided that not only did Tarin have to endure his phobia, over and over again, but that he had to willingly walk into it himself or else they decided he had failed.
When Lee felt Tarin's arms tighten around her, she leaned in, hugging him tighter again, her head resting against his shoulder.
For a short while, Lee sat there hugging Tarin in silence. "I won't do that again," Lee said, her voice quiet and sincere.

Lee had known that what she had said about Kevin that day would have upset him. That had been Lee's entire point in saying it: to upset Tarin to realize the point she was trying to make to him.
It had hurt herself to say those things, but now, after seeing what happened in Tarin's dream, it was even worse.
Scooting over in the bed a bit, closer to Tarin, Lee reached her arms out to hug him. "I know there's nothing I can do to change it," Lee whispered. "And what I wouldn't give to be able to. But I wish I could make it easier for you now…"
Lee just sat there, hugging Tarin with her eyes closed for a good minute before finally pulling back to look at him. "But why in the world were you going to that car willingly?"

Lee didn't understand how there could have been so many people in that house when Tarin had been beaten and shoved into that closet, how he had yelled and screamed, couldn't understand how he could have screamed the way he did in the middle of the night when he was shoved in that box, and nobody had ever come. How could no one have come any of those times?
It was disgusting, and Lee wished that she could somehow go back and actually save a young Tarin, not simply help wake him from the nightmare.
Tarin agreed to tell her if he ever saw someone from then, but brought up a good point of what if it was this world's version of them. "We'll figure that out when it's an issue," Lee said simply.
It was easier for Tarin to answer rather than to simply talk. Lee nodded her understanding, but before she was able to ask anything, say anything, Tarin asked if she was okay.
Again, Lee just stared at Tarin for a moment. It was his past, his nightmare, she had simply intruded. Lee knew that she had been heartbroken by the state she'd seen Tarin in inside the dream, and the rage she felt at the people who had done that was even stronger than the day she had first learned about it. But was she ok?
"I knew you had been young, but seeing it…" Lee started speaking before she had even figured out how she was feeling. "You looked like you could have been one of Kevin's friends."
Lee paused, taking a slightly shaky breath. Though he had been older than Kevin when that had all started, seeing Tarin like that had really hit her with the fact that Tarin really hadn't been all that much older. In another world, that could have been, could be, Kevin.
"None of that should have happened to you. To any of you."

Lee nodded when Tarin told her that he'd had that dream many times over the years. The nightmare. That made sense. She just hoped that he had had it less frequently as the years went on. "Yes, I was actually there," Lee said, her voice dropping down into a whisper.
Then Tarin was telling her not to apologize, and Lee shook her head. "I know you didn't," Lee told Tarin as she looked straight at him. "And that's exactly why I should be apologizing, Tarin. I was trying to wake you up, but I still intruded into your dream, in your head, and I'm sorry for that."
Was there anything she needed to know? Needed? There were definitely things she wanted to know, such as how, why had he been so willing to climb into that car trunk all on his own?
But he hadn't chosen to share any of what she had just seen.
"No," Lee said instead. "Unless there's something that you want to tell me. Except," Lee paused a moment before continuing, a harder tone creeping into her voice. "If by chance you ever do see any of them, you'll tell me."

Lee frowned in return when Tarin responded. Yes, he'd told her that, and yes she'd figured that out from some of the things he'd told her. But
But so was she, if in different ways.
That was probably something better to talk about once they were both actually awake.
Though it did look like Tarin wasn't sure if he did want to wake up After a few moments, he finally agreed that he would wake up.
The next thing Lee knew, she was opening her eyes, back to sitting in the bed in the darkened bedroom. Pulling her hand back from Tarin's shoulder, Lee sat and waited for him to wake up.
"Was that real?"
"It was," Lee admitted, her voice also soft in the stillness of the night. "At least as real as dreams are. I'm sorry. I just…you weren't waking up, and I wasn't sure how else to get you out of the nightmare…"

It really didn't surprise Lee that these dreams, these nightmares were always bad. With how she had seen elevators affect him so many years later, things had to have been bad. She hadn't needed to hear details, or to see it, to know that.
When Tarin turned to her again and thanked her for making the nightmare easier, Lee just looked at him for a few moments. This had been easier? Unless it was because she had let him out sooner than what would normally happen, Lee couldn't easily imagine how things in the dream could have gotten worse for Tarin.
"Your welcome?" Lee said, a little uncertainly. "Though I would have much preferred being able to wake you a lot sooner."
As Tarin turned to look at the fire again, he guessed that she wanted to get out of 'there', as in his head. Her? What about him?
"I don't really like doing this," Lee admitted. Then she shook her head. "You don't want to wake up anymore?"

Lee came to a stop beside Tarin, his face lit up orange by the flames. As he stood there watching the building fire.
Calmly.
That was not something that Lee had seen yet since entering the dream. He also seemed to now be realizing that this was a dream rather than him actually living through the events that had been depicted.
"It is, yes," Lee confirmed Tarin's question. "But you weren't waking up like you normally do. And it sounded like it was getting bad…"
So she had decided to invade his dream in hopes of being able to wake him up.
Finally, Tarin turned to look at her, an unsurprising frown on his face as he asked more questions. "Always?" Lee repeated as she looked back at Tarin. "I don't know. It first happened with Kevin's father. But it really only happened enough times for me to learn how to not do it. And hasn't in probably 15 years."

Lee noticed as she stood there facing Tarin that the people 'watching' weren't really moving. They hadn't really reacted to her bumping into them, to a stranger interrupting their 'test'.
Lee also noticed that Tarin had placed himself between her and the group. But he just looked confused.
Eventually, Tarin figured something out, asking her name. Only for the dream to change yet again. Could she not get some stability in the dream so that she could actually get Tarin to wake up?
This time when the dream stopped again, she was standing in front of a building fire. It…was intense.
Lee also didn't know where Tarin was until she heard him speak. Turning in that direction, Lee saw him standing about ten feet away.
"I am," Lee replied with a nod as she walked over to him. "But none of this is actually happening. You need to wake up, Train."

The moment the door started to open, Tarin - the much younger Tarin - fell out and onto the floor. He was just so small, and young. Not that Tarin should have been put through this at any age, but seeing him like this just made it all even harder.
Lee was just crouching down in front of Tarin on the floor when he spoke. Asking who she was.
Right. Because when Tarin was this age, he didn't know her.
Dreams were weird.
"I'm Lee. But you need to wake up, Tarin."
By the time that she had finished speaking, the dream had shifted. Then shifted again. And she was no longer in front of Tarin. Again and again the dream changed, and Lee just grew more and more upset, because she was seeing things that had been done to not just Tarin, but other, multiple, children.
If Tarin had been right, the people responsible for all of this were lucky that they were dead.
Finally, the dream seemed to settle again, and Lee found herself standing behind a small group of people. At first Lee couldn't see Tarin. Not until he spoke. While his tone was almost relaxed, even as a teen, Lee could tell by how his shoulders were set that he was anything but.
At first, Lee wasn't sure what it was that was 'necessary'. As Tarin started walking forward, Lee became aware of the car in front of the group. With its trunk open.
Was he honestly going to put himself in there?
Lee rushed forward, not even noticing that she'd bumped into a couple people, and placed herself between Tarin and the car. "You don't need to do this," she told him. "It's not actually happening. What you need to do, Tarin, is wake up."

"”I’ve got to pass the test…”
Lee's heart broke again hearing those words. Tarin should have never had to go through any of this. None of the children who had happened upon this 'group' should have had to.
Before she was able to say anything else, or do anything, Lee suddenly found herself in another room. This one with multiple teens scattered about. The room, the house, was not in good shape. It really wasn't suitable for anyone to live in, though Lee would have been grateful to have something like this to crash in when she was 16.
It was only as he reached the bottom of the staircase that Lee realized where Tarin was. Moving forward, Lee followed Tarin up the stairs and into a room.
Even if she had had the energy to be able to move faster, Lee wasn't sure whether she was actually able to use her powers, her siphoning powers, in a dream. So Lee hadn't managed to catch up with Tarin before she saw him fall to his knees just after stepping through a doorway.
Rushing the rest of the way up the stairs, Lee was ready to beat each and every person she found in there for what they did, powers or no powers. Except that she heard a small door on the other side of the room close as she entered the otherwise empty room.
Again, empty but not quiet, as she heard Tarin yelling again. "Tarin! You need to wake up!" Lee shouted as she crossed the room, hoping that he would hear her over his own yelling.
"It'll be alright, but you need to wake up!" she added as she pulled the door open.

Almost before the lid was fully open, Lee saw a teenage boy, not much older than Kevin, launching himself out and onto the floor. Raggedly gasping for breath. Lee's heart was already breaking while simultaneously anger started coursing through her.
This was just a dream. The actual events had happened decades earlier in a literal other world. But that didn't stop Lee from wanting to storm out of the room and hurt each and every person who had had any part in this.
It was only then that Lee noticed the bloody fingers, the fading bruises. Lee's hands clenched into tight fists, her nails digging into her palms as she looked down at a young Tarin still laying on the floor. She wanted to cry, comfort Tarin, and as she heard Tarin speak, wanted to murder those responsible, all at the same time.
"You need to wake up, Tarin," Lee told him before taking a shaky breath. "You're having a nightmare. It's time to wake up."
