The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

When Tarin lifted his head, Lee let her hand fall from behind his head to rest on his shoulder. And when he spoke, something clenched in her chest. She knew that guilt, if for very different reasons. And while she had learned to live with it, and was now able to go long stretches of time without really thinking about it, the guilt had never really went away.
"You didn't do anything wrong," Lee repeated gently.
Lee then smiled when Tarin mentioned Dr Rossi. "Yeah, she probably will," Lee replied. "But I'll be there with you if you want me to be. Like always."
Which was something that Dr Rossi was not overly happy about, but Lee was only there because Tarin wanted her to be. And the sessions were a lot more productive that way. With her in the room, Tarin was more likely to actually talk rather than simply answer the doctor's questions. And she hadn't learned enough yet to always ask the right questions to get the answers she was after.

Tarin didn't wrap his arms around her after she had sat on his lap. That was strange, as he normally did that the moment she was close enough for him to wrap his arms around her.
But he looked at her as she spoke. And didn't look happy. No, it was more than that, Lee thought. Obviously he wouldn't look happy with what they were talking about, but there was something else in his eyes that Lee couldn't name.
Only when she had kissed him had Tarin wrapped his arms around her. And buried his head in her shoulder. Lee held Tarin, one hand on his head against her shoulder, the other in his back.
And she just sat there with him in silence for a minute. "You did nothing wrong," Lee murmured, finally breaking the silence. "You did what you had to to survive."

Tarin thought, he was worried, that her thoughts or feelings toward him would change because he had never stepped in to stop what was happening to others either. That if the fire hadn't happened when and how it had, that he would have ended up becoming one of the adults in the group enforcing those horrific rules and tests.
Lee's lips pressed together in a tight line, that crease appearing between her brows. That likely could be true, wasn't it? He had already been in New York, with that group, for what, at least five years when that fire had happened? Since he had been just 14.
Taking a breath, Lee said without a word. She walked to the other side of the table, sitting in Tarin's lap in the space between him and the table. Giving her the unique situation of being able to look into his eyes without having to look up.
"How could I blame you for any of what happened?" Lee asked, her voice gentle but sad. "They threatened and conditioned you from a young age and you were barely an adult when it ended. Maybe you would have eventually, but we'll never know. Just like we'll never know what else they would have done to you before that potentially happened."
"It doesn't change anything," Lee whispered, then leaned in to give Tarin a soft kiss. "I still love you, Tarin."

Fear could be very powerful. Lee had almost locked herself in the apartment during the Registration Act out of fear. And with what they had done to Tarin, it did not surprise Lee that the 'leadership' of that group had been brutal when they made examples of people.
The entire time that he had been with them. Right up until that fire. But it wasn't just shoving Tarin into small spaces because he was claustrophobic. There had been more. The first time at the cemetery, meaning they had taken him there multiple times. To that island. In extreme situations.
Lee had known that Tarin's early years in New York had been bad, but she hadn't realized just how bad they had been. And people couldn't even leave the group because they would be brought back. Lee could only assume to be punished or otherwise be made an example of.
By the time that Tarin had finished speaking, Lee was shaking her head slightly, sadly. And he really didn't seem to mind the fact that she had entered his dream, just what she had seen when she had, which help ease some of the guilt she felt about the intrusion.
But Tarin's last words just made Lee frown in confusion. "Why would anything I saw, or what you just said, change anything?" she asked as she looked at Tarin across the table. "Well, other than how much I hate them all. Because that has drastically increased. But why would it change anything else?"

Usually it was everything. Lee pressed her lips tightly together hearing that. Meaning that Tarin had been tortured like that more times than the dream had played out.
While Tarin sipped his coffee, Lee thought about if there was anything she did want to ask about. She had known that it was horrible just from the first, vague explanation Tarin had given her about the 'training' in the shop. But actually seeing it…
It had been so much worse than she had thought.
"I know you were all brainwashed and conditioned into thinking it was normal or needed to be done," Lee finally said. "But I can't believe that no one ever tried to step in, tried to stop things…"
Lee shook her head then took a sip of coffee. "How long did they do that to you?' Lee then asked quietly. She had thought that this 'training' had only been for a short while after Tarin had joined the group. But he had definitely grown during the course of the dream that she had seen.
"I hope you can," Lee replied when Tarin wondered if he'd be able to step in and save himself the next time he had that nightmare. "Or at least that you're easier to wake. Which," Lee paused, glancing down at the mug still in her hand before looking up at Tarin again. "I'm sorry. I should have told you about all that. It's just, I don't like doing it, didn't think I would do it again, so it wasn't something I had thought about."

After she had kissed Tarin, it didn't take Lee long to make her way out to the kitchen and hit the button to start the coffee maker. If they had woken up at their normal time, the coffee would have already been ready for her.
While she stood there waiting for the coffee, Lee leaned against the counter and thought about what had happened and what they had talked about in the however long it had been since Tarin became aware in his dream.
Lee was well aware that there were plenty of nightmares that would have been worse, visually, to have walked into. She knew there were because she had had some as well. Her brain had put together the bedroom she'd walked into when she'd come back from Toronto all those years ago with the body in Central park a few times in the weeks after the merge.
Coffee finally ready, Lee poured herself a cup and made her way out to the living room. Just standing there for a moment. She really didn't feel like watching something, so Lee sat at the table. Slowly, idly adding pieces to the puzzle as she sipped her coffee.
Until she felt Tarin approaching. She shrugged as she looked over at him. "It gave me something to do," she said. "And yes, there's still plenty of coffee."
Once Tarin was sitting across from her a minute later with his own coffee, Lee looked at him thoughtfully for a moment. "How do you feel?" she asked gently. "Anything you want to talk about?"

Lee was just pulling a shirt on over her head when Tarin answered her question about coffee. It wasn't common for him to have coffee with her in the mornings, but there were days, like after having a nightmare, when he did have a cup.
Not that Lee even really needed the coffee most mornings anymore. Not when she spent the night sleeping beside Tarin and he was more than happy to give her a boost if she was having trouble waking up.
But it was habit; Lee had been downing coffee in the morning so that she could go and actually get energy for the majority of her life at that point. Plus, even though caffeine wasn't as effective for her as it was for most, the withdrawal if she completely cut it out sucked.
Leaning on the bed, Lee gave Tarin a soft kiss. "Don't rush on my account," she told him. "I won't drink all the coffee on you."

Even though he had been the one to ask what time it was, Lee heard Tarin grumbling a bit when she pulled away so she could check her phone.
Lee was feeling pretty awake thanks to the hugs they'd had since Tarin had woken up, but when she heard Tarin sigh, she realized that he hadn't really gotten all that much sleep. At least not as much as he normally would. They had stayed up later than normal, then the nightmare ended up waking earlier.
"Well, while you decide," Lee said as she slipped out of bed and pulled some clothing on. ''I'm going to go start some coffee. Are you going to want some this morning?"

How long had the spirit been waiting for Tarin's guard to drop? That was a very good question, and unfortunately one they were not going to get.
The other question that they weren't going to get an answer for, at least not for years, was whether or not the spirit would be able to come back again. Could her siphoning actually 'destroy' spirits when she took enough energy during a merge, or did it just deplete their strength to the point that it took years before they were able to link up with Tarin again?
Tarin also said that he had learned, which was good. Not that it was going to happen again, but the more that he knew, that they knew, the more that could be done to prevent things.
And that went beyond just the merges.
When Tarin asked the time, Lee finally pulled away from him and reached out for her phone on the night table. "It's six. Did you want to get up, or stay in bed?"

Lee nodded when Tarin first questioned that she'd believed that about him and merges so soon after they really 'met'.
Tarin went on, asking how she could have possibly known, especially since he had been a mess. Lee just looked back at Tarin levelly.
"You had only had one other merge in your entire life," Lee pointed out, letting that hang in the air before she continued. "There had been multiple merges in just the first year that I knew Kevin's father."
Not all of them had been close to as bad as the merges involving that one particular spirit, but none of them had been good.
"When your second ever merge was because of that spirit, why in the world would I think it wouldn't be the last one?"

Lee frowned slightly when Tarin asked how the eyes were different when the spirit had been in control as opposed to him. It was weird, but Lee really wasn't exactly sure. Well, other than the emotions she was seeing in the eyes. The emotions were so vastly different between Tarin and the spirit that Lee thought anyone and everyone should have been able to see the difference.
But it had only been after the spirit was gone that Lee had realized what colour Tarin's eyes were.
Taking a breath as she sat there, Lee thought back. Lee could vividly remember looking down at Tarin when she was pretty certain that the spirit was gone but was just waiting for him to confirm that.
Lee did not remember nearly as clearly what Tarin's face, his eyes, had looked like seconds before that.
She had been looking at him, watching his eyes for signs the spirit had left, arms and shoulders for any sort of sign he was about to try something. But she hadn't noticed this eyes. "I think they looked darker, maybe?" Lee finally answered. "I'm not really sure. But something changed enough that I noticed."
Lee knew that the possibility of another merge was, well, possible. But Lee truly did not think that it would happen again. Even with the newly found realization that a full merge might be possible even though it had never happened to Tarin before.
But she, the woman who worried and tried to plan for everything, was not worried about another merge.
So when Tarin thanked her, Lee just gave him a slight smile. "Of course," Lee said softly. "Though I'm just telling you something I've believed since the day we went to the Empire State Building."

Lee just sat there as Tarin wiped the tears off first one cheek, then the other. Normally Lee wouldn't have wanted anyone to see her cry nevermind have them wipe the tears away. But tears seemed to have been more common for her recently.
And she found she really didn't' mind Tarin doing it.
Tarin seemed genuinely confused by how she had been able to tell from his eyes that the spirit had left. "Yeah," Lee replied as she looked up at Tarin. "I was sure enough to almost stop siphoning."
"The pure hatred it was looking at me with was just suddenly gone." Lee explained. Lee lifted a hand to Tarin's cheek as she continued. "Then I noticed your eyes were green. Which makes me think that they didn't look quite the same."
Tarin then went on, though very simply with only two words, to tell her that it wasn't going to happen again. That she wasn't going to have to do, or go through, anything like that again.
At first, Lee only nodded. Tarin had told her this before. "I know," Lee whispered. She believed him. She was sure that it wasn't going to happen again.

Of course it would have been best if she had never had to do that, had never had to see or live through that. But if she hadn't, Lee's entire life would be different. Because if she hadn't shown up to end the merge, Rupert would have done it. And while that would have saved Lee a lot of pain and heartache, she would have missed out on so much. She would have missed out on things that she hadn't even thought were possible for her.
Then Tarin was apologizing for her having to go through it again. Finally pulling back, just enough so that she was able to look up at Tarin, Lee shook her head. "It definitely wasn't good, but I'm glad that I was able to," she told him as she looked up into his eyes. Her own eyes, and cheeks, were still wet from the tears as Lee hadn't unwrapped her arms from around Tarin.
"I think it might have actually been easier because I didn't know you at the time. But even without really knowing you, I could tell that you were you again because of your eyes…"

Again, Lee nodded against Tarin's shoulder. That's exactly what she had had to do. Because while she thought she had gotten rid of the spirit, there was no way that Lee was going to leave after all of that without knowing for sure.
If she had just left at that point without being one hundred percent sure, she may as well have not shown up.
" It had to be so hard.”
The tears that had been welling up had spilled over by this point, slowly running down Lee's cheeks as she sat there holding onto Tarin almost as though he were a life preserver.
"I wasn't even touching people after the camps at that point," Lee whispered. "Do you know how hard it is to pay in cash without touching the other person? Only to end up with all that…"

Lee nodded against Tarin's shoulder even as she felt tears welling up behind her eyelids. She'd had to fight. She had been the only one who could. If she hadn't thought tooth and nail, she wouldn't be here.
"It doesn't really matter how strong or fast you are when you're being dragged backwards by your hair," Lee continued, her voice quiet. "I was so lucky…it was a crappy, old apartment. The drawer came completely out, dumping everything on the floor, and I managed to elbow him in the face right as he was bending to grab a knife."
So lucky, Lee knew. If it hadn't been for that, all of the knives falling out of reach and a perfectly timed elbow, Lee was well aware she wouldn't have survived.
"I grabbed him by the throat and moved away from the knives. He…the spirit, said that he wasn't going to leave. It said I'd have to kill him to end the merge…I took so much energy I was scared I might have…"
