The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

The girl winced as Jude went ballistic on the guy, but didn't scream. Sveta held her by the shoulders and held her gaze.
"It's gonna be okay. What's your name?"
"Pearl" she said softly.
"No, not dat one. You real name."
"Rosa."
"Good. Where are you from, Rosa?"
"Venezuela."
Sveta nodded towards the man that collapsed on the floor under Jude's hits. It didn't escape her that Jude looked very confident and effective. He must have been trained by Sam, or some other X-man. Apparently he was old enough for that now.
"Did he bring you?"
"No" the girl shook her head "He... paid for me, here. I came to study, and they..."
"Kidnapped you?"
The girl nodded again, hugging herself.
>>"No, you wait. I don't care that you have money enough for the luxury suite. Someone's gonna pay for this. Ask him, Red."
Sveta sat the girl down on the bed and then reached into her cleavage and under her dress. She assembled a syringe and a needle, and unceremoniously stabbed the guy in the shoulder.
"Dere's your tracker" she said "You can run, but you can't hide. Now." she pulled the mask off the man. He really didn't look like anyone special. Sveta pulled a knife and leaned down to look into his face "Names. Now. Yours first."

Sveta could tell Jude's mood was dark (with a chance of murderous). She flashed him a bright smile and pushed the girl (gently) to the opposite wall of the room, as far from the guy as possible. Leaning over, she rested her hands on the girl's hips and buried her face in the side of her neck.
"He is a bad, bad man" she murmured, low enough that the guys could only hear the purring "We're here to help. You won't scream, will you?"
There was the flash in the girl's eyes again. Maybe it was her touch, or maybe her powers activated when her heart rate picked up. Sveta pulled back enough to see her face, and she could see part determination and part... eagerness? The girl gave her a little nod, and that was all she needed. She turned back and winked at Jude with another bright smile.
>>"I'm afraid if you drink too much you'll get even sillier. And I don't intend to let you pass out from anything but exhaustion."
No drinking, then. Things were on the fast track now. Sveta could sense the tension in the girl as they came to that conclusion. She was not here for fun either.
>>"If they get too silly, we can always find new ways to tire ourselves."
>>"I-uh... I've never..."
>>"Really? Well, we can fix that. Come on, girls. He says he doesn't want to drink anymore. We'll have to show Mister... Let's show Mr. Black how much fun we can have without another round."
The guy had no inhibitions, and Jude seemed to be very uneasy about the situation. Too bad. The only way out now was going through with it.
"It's okay baby, I promise it'll be fun" she smiled, leaning over and brushing her cheek to his. She didn't quite kiss him, but made sure there was skin contact. He either needed a boost of Evelyn's powers to figure this situation out, or needed to pick a new one up, a.s.a.p.
The man ushered them towards the hallway with the doors. Sveta walked with the girl, holding her at a familiar closeness.
"It's okay, I got you" she whispered to her in a way that seemed playful (and too soft for the guy to hear), but she hoped would ease the tension.
The bouncers let them through, and the man patted on on the shoulder. A door opened, and they were in a room that looked more like a salon than anything. It was definitely a step up from what Sveta had pictured - carpets, armchairs, curtains, and a bed definitely big enough for four. This was a luxury suite, even if a small one.
Sveta escorted the girl inside, and waited for the door to close and the real fun to begin.

>>"Girls don't get down here on their own. Decide quick. He's on his way over with—"
There was no way of getting out of this now - it was all or nothing. They either take their one shot and finding some things out, or leave empty-handed. Sveta had already had enough frustration for one night.
>>"Excuse me. May I buy you two a drink? My girl's thinking about a swap and I don't quite blame her."
"Oh, vat a lovely idea" she flashed a broad smile at the man as she emerged from Jude's cover and straightened her dress, careful not to be too quick about it. She played up the accent. Now that she was one of the girls, not having an accent probably would have been more suspicious.
"De more de merrier" she added, looking up at Jude "Right, honey?.. Can we? Please?" she added, siding up to the girl and putting an arm around her waist "I bet she is special."
All of them were. Also, Sveta didn't miss the flare of green int he girls eyes when she touched her. Mutant, then. Question was, what kind?

>>"It's not a game. The X-men sent me. But I was just supposed to watch. Now hush. I'm trying to listen for something useful."
The incredible, unbelievable hypocrite.
Closeness, body heat, and kisses aside, Sveta felt like slapping the lights out of her ex-boyfriend right now. Also, Sam, but Sam was not at arm's reach. Jude, on the other hand, was in the middle of the crime underworld, parading as an adult. Again. Sveta took a fistful of his hair as he leaned back in. She'd hurt him more later.
>>"Shotgun. Under the bar. Ugh. One of them's a priest. And one of them thinks you might be as tasty a morsel as I am. Fancy a threesome?"
How was he telling all this? He said he was listening. Super hearing, maybe? Or did he borrow Evelyn's powers?... Neither of those would prove very useful if they got in a fight.
"No I don't" she muttered, looking around to see who might be the wishful third person "But it might get us information. We only have one shot. How about one of the girls?..."
If they went into a room with one of the men, she might just end up killing him. Girls were more likely witnesses.

The whole place was nasty. Sveta could feel her skin crawl. No boost came from Jude yet, which meant he was keeping a grip on his other powers. Good. She hoped he didn't walk into the mansion with an ageing power. Him reverting back to a sixteen-year-old in here would just have been the worst.
She got pushed into a corner, but the fact that she could still see a lot was not lost on her. Jude leaned into her and she let him, although she could feel anger burning in her stomach. She'd yell at him later. Possibly in Russian.
>>"You want to know their faces? I want to know their secrets. I think we can have a mutually beneficial partnership."
She tilted her head, pushing the body hear and the kisses to the back of her mind. She counted the muscle and the staff. Tried to see faces. Most of them were wearing masks, though.
"Dis is not a game" she whispered, eye half closed as if she was saying nothing in particular "Why are you even here? Did Sam think it was a good idea to send you?"
She was not even sure who she was angry at. Sam was definitely on her sh*t list now anyway. Just for good measure.

Out of all people that could have been in this sorry pit of hell, it was Jude.
Older, not as in, "not a teen anymore," but older than he'd been last time they'd met as adults. And wearing a mask, but once their eyes met, that did not change a thing (suck it, all superhero secret identities ever).
Jude was pissed.
"Oh, shit."
Sveta froze, even dropping her silence as he marched up to her and grabbed her chin. Her breath hitched, waiting to see what happens next. He wasn't dumb enough to blow her cover, right?...
>>"You'll do."
He had her wrist in his hand, and Sveta followed along. She was wearing her usual long gloves. She hoped he'd keep his power, whatever it was at the moment, in check. The last thing they needed was a feedback loop.
As the first shock subsided, Sveta started feeling anger of her own. This was Jude, "I want a childhood" Jude, "I can't let you be a vigilante" Jude, playing spy in this disgusting place, and he had the nerve to be angry at her.
>>"You break it, you buy it."
Oh, something was gonna break all right.
At the bottom of the stairs was another vast space. It felt more like a bar than a ballroom, all nooks and crannies, veils and booths, music, drinks, and women. There was also a hallway with doors, which Sveta assumed led to more private activities, although the people in the bar space were certainly not shy either.
She tried to note as many faces as she could. These men were buyers, not sellers, but when the ship went down, they needed to go down with it.
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
Some girls were paraded inside the smoking room, but from what Sveta could tell, nothing sordid was going on there. Other than staring at scantily clad women, that is. The girls were then led outside and down the stairs. So what the smoking room a selection thing? Sveta pulled on her dress, but she was fairly sure it wasn't skimpy enough to get a walk-around in the boys' club.
She saw one of the men stand and walk out. He looked... less comfortable than the others. Maybe he was new too? She didn't see him select a girl, and he did not participate in the friendly conversation all the men were having. Maybe he was the weak link. Maybe he was her way in.
Sveta sipped some wine and shifted so she would catch his eyes before he got to the stairs. It was a gamble; she was nothing like the girls, so if that was his type, she was not going to make a difference. She also couldn't talk without giving the accent away, so she tried something else; she smiled her most alluring smile, flipped her hair away from her bare shoulders, and nodded slightly towards the stairs, giving him the bedroom eyes, hoping it was not actually bedrooms down there.
Come on you pervert, get a clue.

Of course the guys were let right in. Sveta lingered across the hallway from the smoking lounge, taking a peek in whenever the guy in the door was not staring her down (or sizing her up, either way). He did not take on an official pose, but it was clear he would bounce her if she tried to get in. Or maybe she would bounce him, but not without a scandal.
Sveta swirled her drink in the elegant glass, trying to figure out a way to listen in. She watched some men arrive and some leave. She shifted along the hallway as they did, and eventually ended up at a marble staircase that led deeper into the bowels of the mansion. Some women were definitely being escorted there, giggling and flirting all the way.
So there was a place for men and women to mingle, other than the ballroom.
"Sorry Ms Scarlet, invitation only" smiled a graceful hostess at the top of the stairs "Maybe you and your date could come back in a bit? I am sure a lady like you is not here alone, now, are you?"
So she needed a guy to get in there too.
Sexist pigs, the lot of them.
Sveta flashed a knowing smile at the hostess, and turned around to sweep by the smoking room again. Maybe one of the men would catch a glimpse of her, and decide to be her chivalrous escort for the night. A girl could hope...

No one gave a crap about gender equality around here.
There was a web of power dynamics that Sveta couldn't even begin to decipher, but could feel anyway. It involved very powerful men, and women would do anything to get what they wanted. It wasn't as clear cut, but the scales definitely tipped that way.
Which is why she could not pin down the man she was looking for.
There were other parts to the mansion. Other than the dance floor and the bar and the buffet. There had to be a guy's club, a salon with cigars and scotch or something. That would be tricky to get into. Sveta milled around, holding a glass of wine. She just needed one of the guys to wander out of their locker room comfort zone.
In the meantime, maybe she could get a better sense of the layout of the place...

The whole shebang was a cross between an orgy and a business meeting. Not like anyone was naked or anything (yet), but there was definitely an air of decadence, with the masks and the cleavages and all. Sveta moved through the crowd, smiling. She remained silent. A red dress and a Russian accent would have been suspicious in the New York underworld scene, since her vigilante career had taken off, so she decided to play it mute and mysterious. Men loved a quiet woman anyway. She worked the luscious red lipstick instead, smiling around as she walked.
She mostly ignored the dancers and the flirters. There were as many reasons for people to be here as guests; she was not looking for the man-woman kind. The guy she was looking for was tied to human trafficking; that meant he would most likely seek the company of other men. Talk business, over drinks. Sell women. Sveta kept up the smile.
Sam would be so proud.

Playing Russian spy was definitely more fun when the good guys were around.
Sveta looked at the building, lit up like a Christmas tree. Whoever lived there had a lot of money to throw around. In fact, the whole thing felt like she was walking into a live-action version of Clue. There was someone in there that she needed to find. She just didn't know who they were, what they looked like, or exactly what weapon they might use.
Svetlana straightened her dress. It was the same red dress Sam had gotten for her on their last mission, complete with a mask, because let's face it, these people were tacky enough to throw a masquerade. No wonder, probably more than one of them were hesitant to show their face in public.
Sveta had been following leads for months now. Leads on mutant crime, leads on anti-mutant crime, and some old leads on human trafficking that she had picked up despite the fact that the X-man/Vigilante never contacted her again. Eventually, all clues pointed to the city's most notorious underworld social event. All drinks to be pre-tasted, all deals to be made.
Now she only needed to get inside, and find the person she needed to beat up later. It was going to be a needle in a haystack. Full of needles.

>>"If I may ask, how did you learn about your powers and how did you learn to control them?"
"Dat's a long story" Sveta smirked. It really was. And it involved mail order brides, and acid saliva, and a whole bunch of things she was not ready to discuss yet.
>>"You learn something new every day. I am sorry, we have been talking for a while now I still don't really know what to call you."
"You can call me Effie" she said with a shrug. It was her second name by now, anyway.
"I learned by practice. The trick is to stay away from mutants, mostly" she chuckled "But dere is a place, if you want to train. A mutant school here in the city. If they take you as a students, dey help you to train with your powers there."
She watched him mold the cup, and while a part of her brain wondered if they'd have to pay for it, it was still fascinating.
"That's a neat trick."

The cocky dude in her ex-body was quickly becoming the comic relief of the situation.
>>”What are ya doing! Fight!”
Sveta swore in Russian and got back to her feet - his feet - glaring down at her opponent. She was not sure where the blast had come from, but she was determined not to be knocked over by it a second time. Anger pulsed in her temples as she balled her hands into fists and took on a firmer stance. The body reacted to her will, her legs and fists growing bigger, visually bigger, and her height gaining serious inches.
Whoa.
Sveta's own body, on the other hand, tried to lift a garbage can, and fell on her face.
>>”So weak!”
"Oh, for **** sake." Sveta lunged at Damien, who didn't seem to feel the need to dodge. She expected the next blast a second before it hit, and while it did knock her back a foot or two, she didn't fall. In response to her will, her legs grew bigger too. I wondered where the limit was.
"Get out of the way" she growled at her body. Last thing she needed was her boosting Damien. "Get away from him."
Damien glared, winding up for a blast again, but Sveta lunged at him instead.

Oh yeah, he was a mutant all right. He was as mutant as a calf with three heads. Splendid.
Sveta was starting to wonder if an unknown part of her ability was attracting the friendship of mutants.
>>"... So I am still not sure if that was just by chance or what. So as far as I can tell, If I am indeed a mutant, I have two abilities, The first is the ability to understand devices and mechanisms and the second is to manipulate them, to mould, shape, fix or break... Usually I have to expend a lot of mental effort to activate either of the two powers, if that is what they are and I am not going crazy... Hence the statement about strange things."
"It's not New York" she sighed, sipping some water form her cup "It's me. I boost mutant powers. Dat's why I didn't want you to touch me, my powers activate yours on contact."
With the usual disclaimer done, she sat back and folded her arms.
"It sounds like you have a useful mutation though. Sounds like something you could do a lot with if you get it under control..."
