The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>>”What are you talking about? I’ve never and would never attack a child. What happened? Before Something happens that someone regrets, let’s talk.”
The fact that Travis was playing it all innocent made Sveta's blood boil. They knew enough from the security footage. They knew enough from Iris saying baby words about keys. She'd seen him use those.
"Do us both a favor, Travis, and don't play the idiot. You're bad at it."
Steel, on his part, was out of patience. Dammit. Svetlana's breath came in a puff of mist.
>>”Calm down! I’m not fighting an X-man! We can clear up this misunderstanding. What toddler, how did I attack them?”
Steel was pissed. So were his ice clones. He had Travis cornered, and he was clearly not here to play games.
"We had an understanding. You are a goddamn MRC cop!" Sveta spat. "You better pray to whatever f*** up bigoted witch god you got that your spell is reversible, because if you took that girl's powers for good..." Sam could finish the rest.

Sveta had thought for a moment that she could do this in a calm manner. She couldn't. The moment Travis raised a finger at her as if she was asking him for the time, something snapper.
"You f*** piece of sh***!" She snapped. It came out in Russian, as it always did when she was pissed. She was beyond pissed. She didn't even notice the temperature starting to drop. She drew a breath, switching to English. "Which part of your job as a goddamn cop involves attacking a toddler? How the f*** do you justify that?"

Sveta had fought all kinds of criminals before, and some of them had royally managed to piss her off. Honestly, she was probably still in the vigilante business on the dl because she had some anger issues to work out. But none of that, really, measured up to what she felt about Detective Travis at the moment. The man had made a working relationship with her, they exchanged information, they had an understanding. And he used that to worm his way into Haven at the most vulnerable time, while reality was being ripped apart and a school was under siege, and... attack a toddler.
A toddler whose vigilante parents now definitely wanted Travis dead.
Sveta and Sam - a.k.a. Cold Steel - also had an understanding. Sveta never made it onto the X-team because she was too dangerous... and not upstanding enough. But Sam had kept her on the roll for cases where the X-men would have had more moral qualms. Like this one.
This one was personal. She wanted to catch Travis and make him pay. It was also professional, because she was responsible for this goddamn disaster of a security breach. It was preventative, because she and Sam both knew Mirror was too good a person to be saddled with this. And it was emotional, because Sam all but froze her tits off, clearly blaming her for the mistake she was already beating herself up about.
Thank god Travis was an idiot. And idiot who went back to his job on the force after attacking a kid. Not very hard to track.
Sveta walked up to him in the park, because she needed to do this face to face. Sam had given her a five-minute head start, holding on to the boost she'd given him. The park was exactly five minutes away from a winter wonderland. But still not as cold as Sveta's voice.
"Travis."

Devon could be damn impressive when he wanted to be. Which was most of the time. Sveta smirked at the display of his powers, and kept her distance. She had boosted Devon before, when they fought the wildfires, but she never wanted to the test the true limits of their combined powers. Zselyke, on her part, seemed impressed without being startled.
>>"An honor to finally meet the man behind it all, Mr. Hadden. And it was my pleasure to do my part. Sveta made it easy to help her; she's pretty damn impressive,"
Sveta smirked, and poured herself a glass after all.
>>"I'm more than willing to lend my hand to a group hellbent on forcing change for the safety of our people. Not just mutants. The Other."
These two people in one room... it was meant to happen. They were both powerful in more ways than one, their goals and values aligned, and they had the means to change the world. Sveta smiled as she watched them. It was good to feel like Haven had leadership again. Leadership that would accomplish things.
>>"I'm hoping you treat this Inner Echelon of yours with the secrecy it deserves, Mr. Hadden. There is a big difference between a Senator supporting a humanitarian organization versus a senator sitting on the board of a shadow council."
That was a fair point. "Well, our security measures obviously need an upgrade" she noted with a small frown. It was a sore point. "... now that magic is a free for all. But we're on it, and obviously the IE is the best guarded part of the whole operation..." She cleared her throat. "There used to be more of us, but life happened... It's good to have others up here again." Devon included.

"Holding up." Sveta answered Devon. She knew he cared, and would have listened to more, but she had nothing new to add to the circles her mind had been tracing for weeks, and she needed to focus on something else. Like this meeting. Zselyke made an appearance a few minutes later, and made a beeline for the booze, which made it a lot harder not to follow her example. Sveta smiled anyway. Zselyke was always fun to be around, even when heavy topics were involved.
>>"Don't mind me; I have a Whoosh Call with 'The Recognized Gentleman from Kentucky' scheduled this afternoon, so I'm mentally preparing for a conservative grifter's opinions on New York liberal gun control."
"Tell him we've got witches in the city now who can literally turn guns into flowers, see how that flies" Sveta smirked at her. "Zselyke, this is Devon Hadden, Haven's founder and CEO. Devon, this is Senator Zselyke Lányi. It's about time you two met."

The battle downtown had been... a lot. It changed everything. It shifted the balance between mutant, humans, and mystics. It shifted people's perception of reality, their concept of magic, the entire future the world was looking at now. Xavier's was rebuilding from scratch, and mystics were here to stay. In New York, and in Haven and the Sanctuary that was still housing several people from the battle almost two months ago.
Also, Sveta personally had a lot to make up for. Travis was on the loose, having used magic on a mutant child, under her watch. She was not sure she'd ever forgive herself for being an idiot and trusting him. Or allowing Haven to be a place where that could happen. Now that putting out fires was not the main issue of the day 24/7, Haven also needed to adapt. Plan. Move forward.
The first step in that plan was calling a very important meeting.
She had told Zselyke and Devon about each other, but they had never actually met. That would change today. Sveta waited for both of them in the Inner Echelon's conference room. Zselyke was not an IE member, but for a venue, the room would do for now. They had important things to talk about. Sveta eyed the table with drinks in the corner, but refrained from filling a glass and downing it. It wasn't easy.

Sveta nodded. They moved on from the topic of the toddler, which was good, because she didn't want to give the impression that the daycare part of Haven was descending into chaos. (Which it might have been). Sam being here and making himself visible in an official capacity was definitely going to help.
"Alright, then." She nodded. "Thank you, detective. You two go and be visible." Devon's presence had done wonders for the general mood, and he had a way of making people feel better about the situation. "I'll..." stay well away from mutant guests with various powers "... go check on logistics. We have more people coming in, scared of the mess at the school, seeking shelter. We might get more if someone starts blaming all this on mutants. Once this is all done... we'll have to look into opening up some of the other apartments or safe houses for Mansion residents. I'll make some lists." She nodded to the two men, heading for the door.

>>”I am happy to help. A fight with a large group of people throwing around spells isn’t exactly what I’m trained for. I felt I could be of better service here. And, as you said, deter those seeking to use the situation for their own gain.”
Sveta nodded. Even the Detective, always up to something, decided to come and pitch in. That was a brownie point in her book. They needed all the help they could get; many of the city's heavy hitter vigilantes were at the school, and Haven was full of vulnerable people. Even with Sveta, Devon, and BlacTac on site, it was a volatile situation.
Not as volatile as the toddler, though. Sveta looked up from the coffee machine.
>>”Handing out powers…Today? You have a kid here who hands out powers that could be potentially dangerous?”
>>“It’s more of an isolated concern than it is danger,”
Sveta chuckled, shaking her head. "More annoying than dangerous, really. She transfers powers by touch, but none of them are particularly bothersome. Today, it seems to be polka dots." She shrugged. "We have a lot of mutant kids in the building right now, obviously. But they are the least of our worries."
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
"We are on high alert" Sveta nodded, watching the men introduce themselves. No doubt they were sizing each other up. Both were formidable in their own way. Right now, she would take all the help she could get. There was no telling if the Supremes planned on going after the more vulnerable targets. "Drinks?"
For sure they had a lot to talk about. She moved around the desk... but just then, the door popped open. Clara, one of the executive assistants poked her head in. A head that was marked by very clearly visible spots in various shades.
"Ms. Sergeyeva? Mr. Hadden? Just wanted to update you and let you know that... um. In case you were wondering, it's not an outbreak. It's just the toddler. She's handing powers out like candy and... spots seem to be today's menu. Doc looked at them and they are harmless. Nothing to worry about."
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
"It's the detective I mentioned to you. Samuel Travis." Sveta told Devon as they made their way to the office. "He's a mystic. Apparently a neutral one, since he is not in that damn battle out there. He knows... some things about me, but not all. It's... a mutual agreement." That was about the gist of it. Sveta had told Devon about Travis before. She left the office door open so Sam could walk in once he arrived.

Haven was living up to its name. Ever since the warning about the attack - from Atlantis, of all places - Sveta and Devon had been coordinating with Xavier's, and other mutant organizations, to shelter people. All staff and students from the school who couldn't (or shouldn't) fight were moved to be housed at Haven, or the Sanctuary. Sveta was also in contact with Sabine, who was taking a more direct role in defending the school (and, basically, the mortal plane). Sveta wished she could be with her. But she wasn't, for too reasons. One: she was too powerful. Overboosting a mutant would have been very dangerous - not to mention drawing the attention of all mystics by doing so. Two: someone had to look after Haven. And Sveta was ready to do so. Along with BlacTac. And Tempest.
She was checking numbers and lists with an assistant when someone told her a detective was looking for her. Oh. Travis. She nodded, telling them to bring him up to her office. He'd been there before. As she walked up there, she looked around, spotting Devon.
"Hey. Come with me. I need to introduce you to someone if you have a moment."
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
>>"I’ve been reading some leadership books to help me fall asleep actually,”
Sveta laughed softly, returning to her own bowl of noodles. They would be okay. Not because of the leadership books (she had tried those too and quickly discarded them), but because they could actually share the responsibilities this time. And because they could talk about the elephant in the room.
>>“I mean, they help for that and the actual leadership... But again, I’m sorry Sveta. Sorry I didn’t push to come back sooner or check in… Left ya with this and all. I appreciate all you’ve done and more.”
"I appreciate the apology." Sveta nodded. "But don't be too hard on yourself. You'll have people do that for you often enough."
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
To Devon's credit, he decided to be honest with her.
>>“Well I did say honesty. I’m exhausted. I feel like I’ve been going without stopping, without resting for years. I wasn’t kidding when I said I couldn’t remember the last time I’d been complimented. Always working, fixing, investigating… And even in the last year when I was playing the founder opening a new Haven location abroad I never had time to sit and eat. Too busy meeting and greeting.”
"Oh, believe me. I know the feeling." Sveta had been filling in for him for years, and it was a lot harder than Devon made it look. Or that anyone assumed, really. She could tell he was as exhausted as he claimed. It was the downside of believing in what you did: you put way more into it than what was usually healthy.
>>“I saved a psychologist who focused in marriage counseling but who’d been volunteering to talk with mutant children, and we had to lay low a bit… She and I got to talking and she helped me realize I had to step back, say what I needed and wanted to be doing. I got too accustomed to saying yes and just helping however I was asked. Not easy to say no to such sometimes, but… You have to care of yourself first.”
"Well... that part's easier when you have help." Sveta noted. Running things alone was not good, not even for someone like Hadden. She realized a moment later her words could be taken another way. "I'm not blaming you." She held a hand up. "I just mean... we should pay more attention to that in the future. Dividing up responsibilities, taking breaks, I mean."

The headbutt was satisfying, but it didn't help much. Sveta cursed and sputtered as the man kissed her, spitting at him once he pulled away. Not that it mattered; her powers sent his into overdrive, and suddenly there were a whole lot of copies in the room. Even though she tried to keep her cool, Sveta felt her heart hammering in her chest. The goddamn kiss. It always made everything worse. She glared at the man.
"F*** you, f*** creep" she reiterated. "It lasts minutes, I told you. Probably a long time for you.Now let me go."
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
The guy either knew something, or he was just lucky at guessing. Sveta struggled as he leaned in. His aim was a quest for power, but that did not make this feeling any less awful. Being forced to kiss someone... "F*** you" Sveta spat, jerking her head forward, aiming for his nose.
