The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. Carrick took the bag, and went straight for the shiny ball. Amethyst giggled as he disregarded the piece of clothing in favor of the toy that was decorated with various gems. She could hear him purring, which meant that he probably liked the gift.
>>”What’s this? This is.... awesome.”
"It's for the griffin." she clarified "I'm told they like shiny toys."
And guarding treasure hoards, but she did not want to completely spoil him just yet.
"The tunic is for you."
>>”A dress? Already tailored fer me too!”
"That was the point." she nodded. Carrick had a lot of trouble with clothes, due ti his wings and tail. American clothing was not really designed for extra appendages. The princess soon figured out that he would have an easier time with the loose tunics the Atlantean men liked to wear.
>>”It flows!"
"It's made of silk" she nodded, happy that he liked the tunic. It looked good on him. Kind of made him look like a demigod.
>>”Defiantly killed it at the gift giving. Should have gone first. Hard ta follow up. Not as shiny as the ball but.... I thought I should get you somthin tangible. Other gift is the gift of song.”
Carrick handed her a necklace with a small pendant. Amethyst liked getting jewelry. She looked at the pendant curiously, arching an eyebrow.
He did. The princess chuckled as the tail wound itself around her. Carrick was easy to read when he was in a good mood. And apparently the festival of Valentine put him in a good mood.
>>”Don’t know, first time I had a girlfriend like this. Easier when yer just going along fer the ride. Next time you can plan the date and I’ll go along fer a ride.”
"Sure." she nodded. She could plan things, she was good at planning, especially if it was something fancy. For now, pizza on a rooftop was perfectly fine.
>>”Not gonna lie, was sweating fer a small moment there. Wonder where she would like to go? Ask her? Nah, ruin the surprise. Have a few back up plans instead incase one of ‘em don’t work out? Yeah, sounds better! Ya make Diamonds, stars aren’t nearly as cool shiny. Glad ya like ‘em though.”
"Diamonds later" she smirked at him. He really enjoyed those, although she suspected it was at least as much about the process making them as it was about the shinies. "You are doing fine. And I don't like you because you do fancy things. I'm fancy enugh for myself." she added with a chuckle. "But I did get some things for you. I'm told presents are a part of the celebration." she noted, finishing her pizza slice, and handing him the gift bag.
>>”Uhhhh.... That there... That there is the moon and that one.... That one there is a dipper."
"Fascinating." the princess grinned.
>>"You know anything about them?”
"I know some of the stories, yes. From before Atlantis rose." she nodded. The sky was a faraway thing for the underwater kingdom, but they did have the myths and the legends, and illusion powers to make them seem real.
>>”Star gazing I like, I know little to nothing about them other than they are full of hot gas. Something we have in common. Other than that that is pretty much all I know. Thought the view would be pretty at least.”
"They are." she agreed. She was sure astronomy was somewhere on the curriculum, but it was not really the point right now.
>>”Yer call. I might have something small fer ya. I might have also got yer favorite Pizza.”
"Very thoughtful" she smiled, taking a slice of the pizza with all the seafood on it. Some things in New York were pretty okay. And she spied the cotton candy in the bag too. "I told you I like this holiday. Some people seem to stress a lot about it..."
>>”And I like shiny things. Like we were made fer each other.”
The princess chuckled. Every once in a while, some of Carrick's comments actually landed well. Comparing himself to a star was to be expected, but she felt appreciated anyway. It might not have been a big fancy celebration, but he had put thought and effort into it, and the princess was learning to appreciate that.
>>”I mean... we can go flying if this isn’t yer type of thing... Figured we don’t have the best track record in the city and this is pretty close to home. Be an easy fly fer you and no car fer me so everyone’s happy. Like ta end at least one date with ya instead.”
"That's a good plan" she smiled as they sat on the roof, holding hands. "Do you want your gifts now, or do you want to tell me about the stars first?"
They rose into the air and Amethyst braced herself for the flight... but almost as fast as it began, the trip was already over. They landed on the roof of the Mansion, and the princess looked around in surprise as she was deposited on a blanket under the starlit sky.
>>”Figured since it was such a nice night out we could do a little stargazing. Prime spot, had to chase off a few kids to get it.”
"Oh." Amethyst sat on the blanket, looking up at the moon and the stars. She didn't know what she'd expected from Carrick, but this was... nice. She looked at Carrick, who was obviously proud of himself. "I like the stars."
>>”Oh? What happened to exiting the normal way? Know what, not gonna question it.”
"Wise choice" the princess smirked as he climbed out the window. Any other time he would have been the one clamoring for a flight, but of course he had to remind her that she was warming up to the idea. She still did not like flying too much, but at least she trusted Carrick more not to drop her.
>>”Normally sneak out like this?”
"One more comment and this will be the last time" she warned him as she got up on the window sill, and then into his arms. It was always strange to go from standing to flying. She held on to the gift bag, trusting him to hold her and keep her safe for the flight. "I hope we are not going far..."
Some grandfathers were better than others. Amethyst did not mind having a proper royal education, but she wondered what it would be like to share nature and time with a parental figure. And tea. The tea was good.
>>"We did not share names. My given name is Himari and my family name is Ishida. What would your royal highness' be?... If you are royalty what are you doing here? Are you completing some duty that only you can do?"
"Princess Amethyst of Atlantis. I'm here as... a sort of ambassador to the school. Representing the Atlantean royal family, and the demigods of Atlantis."
>>”Told ya. Any chance ya get gift eh? Ya look beautiful.”
"Exactly" she agreed to both of those things, grinning as he walked in. She accepted the roses that had some shiny sheen to them, rendering them less fragile than natural flowers.
>>”Sure ya would preferred something a little more extravagant. But... eh night’s still early. Might surprise ya still. Who knows.”
"We'll see." she had surprises for him too, although the way she understood the men were expected to do the brunt of the work on this holiday. As it should be.
>>”Got a jacket? Or a blanket. Bit cold out but I got some ways ta keep us warm.”
"I have a cloak" she noted, walking to the closet to take out a thick, fur-lined velvet cloak she'd been wearing on the cold days. They were going outside, then. That was a clue. Once she wrapped herself in the cloak, she picked up the gift bag she had prepared.
>>”Pretty sure I’m gonna ruin this holiday fer ya. Any one after this night is gonna be hard ta follow. Really outdone meself. Didn’t eat right? Got a little flying to do, unless you’d rather walk. ”
"You are raising my expectations very high" the princess arched an eyebrow, walking over to the window to open it. She would allow Carrick to fly with her this time. She liked his confidence, she just hoped he would live up to it. Otherwise they were in for an awkward night. "let's go."
The strange holidays just kept on coming. Amethyst had barely gotten an idea of Christmas, and now there was something called Valentine's Day, which, according to Carrick, consisted of people spending money on their significant others. She was not sure how it was different from any other American holiday she'd witnessed so far, but there it was. And she had a... significant other. Who insisted on not being a concubine, otherwise he would have gotten gifts a lot more frequently. His loss.
There was a knock on the door. On the doorstep stood Carrick, very much dressed up, with a bouquet of roses. Amethyst, dressed in a sky blue dress and red gold jewelry, smiled as she saw him. "I'm liking this holiday so far."
Amethyst was having one of those rare moments when she was actually inspired to care about someone else's safety. In this case, Carrick's, who would be tossed into the worst of Atlantean court intrigue if he was ever presented as a companion to royalty. He did not seem to think the threat was too serious.
>>”Bad time to tell ya yer cousin put me on the payroll here ta bug ya and make you fall fer me.”
"I am the payroll" she clarified, rolling her eyes, but smiled anyway. If only.
>>”Sweet yer worried about me love, I’m pretty good looking out fer meself though.”
"No, you're actually terrible at it. You got kidnapped on both of our dates."
>>”More than just a grand lay though and I’m no pet... I guess, tell me what I need ta do to keep ya all to meself.”
The princess blinked.
"All to yourself?..." it was a foreign concept. Amethyst was familiar with the concept of monogamy, but right now, talking to Carrick, it was not the foremost thing on her mind. She smirked back at him. Grand lay, indeed.
"You are past the point of pet. People don't usually sleep with their pets." she noted, reaching up to scratch his shoulder by his wing. "And I don't plan on getting up just yet so you have me all to yourself."
It was nice to find someone to bond with over the strangeness of Americans. Sure, Carrick was technically not American either, but he mostly behaved like one, or if he didn't, the difference was too subtle to note. But this girl from Japan seemed to be just as far from American culture as she was with her Atlantean upbringing.
>>"Honestly, I am torn between how everyone here laughs and how Americans eat. During meals, they just piled one of every dish on their plate and start eating... and it takes forever! In my culture, you sit down to eat, not to chat for hours at a time. The first time someone here handed me a plate of food and everything was touching!"
The princess chuckled, sipping her tea. It was funny to hear someone else annoyed by certain American thing, and the girl was entertaining, the way she described things. "They do like to pile food on top of other food" she agreed. That seemed to be the general concept.
>>"And Americans are very fond of laughing. Loudly, and with their mouths open. You... You can see everything! Teeth, tongue, Uvula and all."
Amethyst laughed too, hiding it behind her tea cup. That was something she was not much annoyed by, but the loudness of it was definitely notable. Apparently the Japanese girl thought it polite to hide her mouth.
>>"Might I ask an unrelated question? If you are royalty, what should refer to you? Is 'Amethyst' too informal? Or would you prefer 'Your Highness' Or... Amethyst-sama?"
"No one calls me 'your highness' around here" she noted. She was getting used to it. She tilted her head at the last option. "What's that?"
>>"Where I am from people I had just met would normally refer to me as 'Ishida-san'. The family name is much more widely used. I have given up on trying to correct every American I meet though, so Hiyori-San, or Chan even, is fine... if you would like to be friends."
"Oh. I see." it was some kind of a honorific, then. Amethyst did not really have an official family name. "Amethyst...-sama sounds alright. So you would prefer Ishida-san then?"
Amethyst tried to picture the biology teacher. She was a young woman, kind of nice, from what she remembered (although she had skipped a class or two as well). It was probably weird for her that her former boyfriend was young again.
Carrick's contented purr died down as she mentioned Atlantis. The princess sighed.
>>”Yeah... be a shame if that happened... Cause I’m Irish?”
Obviously it wasn't. She just hated the fact that she could tell her words had an effect on him. He turned, and the purring did not come back.
>>”So ya want me a secret? I require way too much attention... You’ll have yer hands full.”
"I'm alright with that." she smiled a little, and paused. She did not know how to express what she wanted to say. "It's... you know Atlantis has... had traditions about gorgons and demigods. And that's... I'm learning about how that is wrong. But now my cousin's on the throne, and she wants to make these big changes, and she sent me here to represent that. If she found out I was... in a relationship with a... with you... I'm worried she might to present that as part of her plans. And then you would be a target for anyone who doesn't like her and wants the old ways back."
Good question. Amethyst was all for enjoying good things and spending time with people she liked. She liked Carrick, and spending time with him was enjoyable. Beyond that, she was not really sure. And she did not feel like making decisions this early in the morning. So she asked about the girlfriend instead.
>>”She had the unfortunate run in with me beasty side. First time he showed up and she saw a bit more gruesome scene than ya did the first time. After that she ghosted me. Scared her off. Now she’s a teacher here.”
"Is she" the princess arched an eyebrow. She'd have to find out more. The fact that the beast scared her was unfortunate; she could imagine it was a painful memory for both. But having someone around who aged while Carrick de-aged... she wondered who it was.
>>”Whatever is going on here though. I like it. A lot.”
"Me too." she smiled back at him. That part was easy. "I just... don't want it to get back to Atlantis."
"I said I didn't know what it meant." she clarified. She was beginning to get the idea, however she was not sure most Atlanteans would get the difference, or even care about it, if they saw their princess with a gorgon. Concubines were easier.
>>”They call that Friends with Benefits here. Never wanted something like that though.”
Alright, so no concubines.
>>”Much rather date ya. But I’m open ta discuss. Last time I had a girlfriend it didn’t work out so well fer me.”
So, dating meant girlfriends and boyfriends. Amethyst knew the term. She was not sure she could imagine herself as one, but at least this was something to go on. "It didn't? Why?"
Technically, by American and by Atlantean law, they were both adults now. They could do whatever they wanted (as long as it did not interfere with Mansion rules) (she was not clear on Mansion rules). In fact, Amethyst was comfortable in bed right now and did not want to think of any kind of rules.
>>"Bad way fer me to find out. Ya touched the Princess, we’re taking yer hands! Imagine I can still play... be awkward at first sure, but I think tail can pull it off.”
The princess rolled her eyes. Sure, Atlanteans would have punished him severely for touching her... once upon a time. He did not need to know the details about that.
>>”So it wouldn’t be a problem then to keep this... Going? Whatever this is?”
"I thought it was dating?" she smirked, looking up at him again from poking at his feathers "Unless you changed your mind about the concubine thing."
