The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

So there the stood for a moment, staring at the tree with all its lights and all its splendor.
Was there something else she was supposed to be seeing? Riley didn’t know, but mostly she was enjoying being there with someone, and having something to do on Christmas Eve.
Aurum spoke, and Riley laughed. He had a point. They both knew they weren’t going to do anything ridiculous like ice skate, so besides staring, there wasn’t anything left to do at this particular place.
”It is nice.” she said, then ”What did you have in mind?”

”Nope” Riley said in response to Aurum’s question, sipping the coffee that she held in her hand and snuggling up to that arm she was on. The tree was really beautiful, not that it was the first time Riley had seen it...but it was the first time she’d really seen it.
”To be honest...if I can’t find work, I usually hole up in my apartment and read.”
Christmas just wasn't all touchy feeley and special when you were by yourself, even if that was by design.

Boy, Riley liked riding a motorcycle. Then again, maybe she just liked riding a motorcycle with Aurum. If anyone had asked her, she’d have said the ride was over too fast...even if it was cold outside.
They stopped in front of a restaurant and Riley followed Aurum in, wondering exactly what kind of Asian cuisine they were in for. Like she’d said to herself earlier, Aurum knew what he was doing.
And wow. That guy had a huge knife. That he was using to make sushi.
Riley liked sushi...
Aurum introduced her to the chef, and after the compliment she decided that she vastly approved of this restaurant.
Aurum instructed her to simply let the chef choose and Riley grinned.

Yeah. It was impossible to have crazy amounts of doubt when Aurum was with her, holding her hand and telling her that everything was going to be okay. Maybe they’d try this conversation over the phone one day, when he wasn’t there to look her in the eyes or kiss her. Those things were utterly counterproductive when it came to making him understand her worries.
Wherever they were going, was a surprise, and Riley trusted Aurum in this. He knew about food, and he’d never failed her yet.
As they passed through the kitchen, Ami told them to get a room and Riley shot her a grin over her shoulder.

Was there anything else she wanted to talk about?
Riley sighed, if there had been, she didn’t remember it now. Why was she so weak against Aurum’s logic and his charm?
Maybe that was how it was supposed to be. And it worked well, at least until she was away from him and the doubts were able to creep their way back in.
”I didn’t have any plans. I feel kind of silly now, to be honest.”

Riley smiled at the kid, even if it was a bit on the cool side.
”A meal in a nondescript diner doesn’t give you my address kiddo. I’ve been around this block a time or two.” She had, and she also known people who attached themselves to likely targets. Riley hadn’t survived the rougher side of New York for 8 years by being dumb or naïve.
As for his view on the City Union Mission, she shrugged. ”Plenty of people lie and say they’re 18. You could pass. Trust me, they don’t check that thoroughly.”
Just then, the meal arrived, and Riley watched as they set the burger, then the coffee down in front of the kid. As the waitress walked off, Riley leaned an elbow on the table and said conspiratorially.
”PS. Your hard ass demeanor isn’t exactly conducive to getting stuff. The helpless shtick from the park was way more effective.”

And now. She was coffee.
And she was dark. And bitter.
Was this supposed to be a compliment? Because Aurum was really doing a kind of terrible job. But he got better as time went on, and in the end he said he loved coffee. And she was like coffee.
Was it worth it to get offended about the things he’d said, when they were true? When he realized what he was getting himself into and still wanted to forge forward?
No. Not really. He was looking her right in the eyes in that way he had that made her warm from head to toe. It was impossible to lie to someone when they looked at you so directly.
Riley nodded.
”It’s just a lot for me. Nobody has ever said that to me before, and it’s hard for me to wrap my mind around.”

Man. He was not making this easy. She was doing all the work.
Well. She supposed she deserved that.
”I wanted to clear the air. Make sure that everything was fully understood.” she wrung her hands a little bit, nervous about what she was saying and how she was saying it.

Aurum offered her a chair, and Riley sat. Then watched as he sat. Why were the words so difficult now that she was sitting here, in front of Aurum, looking at him? This was why she should have called, she decided, then she wouldn’t have had to look at him while she tried to have this conversation.
”I was just...thinking about everything. All the stuff that happened before.” she said, in the most inarticulate way possible. ”And I just thought that since we didn’t really have a chance to talk about all that. Maybe we should.” Her voice was quiet, and it was serious, and she couldn’t exactly bring herself to look at him.
”Because I keep thinking about all of that, and it’s making me a little crazy I think. I’ve been avoiding you, and that’s the last thing I really want to do. So. I’m here. Talking.”

The coat came off, and Aurum started to lead the way to his office.
Riley could feel his eyes on her a few times as they walked, and studiously avoided making eye contact. She wasn’t ready to start the conversation yet, not until she’d had a moment to get her bearings. Aurum’s arrival, at his own apartment, had seemed sudden. Had it been an hour?
The door clicked, and Riley found herself facing Aurum in the room...by themselves. Oh God. This was awkward.
”So. Hi.” she said a little lamely.
”I just wanted to stop by and talk for a minute...sorry I didn’t call. I was kind of in the area...” after she’d ridden the bus for a couple dozen blocks, ”And didn’t even stop to think you might not be home. Ami let me in.”

And then there were keys. And a door. Riley’s heart jumped into her throat, and Aurum walked into the room. Man...why was she so happy to see him?
Before she could speak, Ami spoke for her, and Riley simply nodded a little helplessly. What the girl said was true, and before she could address anything else at Aurum’s sister, the girl was absorbed in the computer once more.
”I can come back later if it’s a bad time.” Riley said weakly....

”It’s easy to talk the talk...and another story to try and walk the walk.”
It was cliché...and bad cliché...but it was what it was, and it was true.
Riley didn’t know what else to say. So she just sat for a few moments, ruminating about what they’d been discussing, and what she was going to say to Aurum when he got home. There was still a lot they needed to talk about.
”I’m glad we had this talk...” Riley said, a little shyly.

Oh good. Ami wasn’t going to give up. In hindsight, Riley didn’t know why she’d thought that in the first place. The girl didn’t seem the ‘roll over and die’ type.
Was Maxine worth the time it would take to come up with the tirade?
”For you to seek her out?” Riley asked rhetorically.
”No. She is not worth your time.” Wasting time on other women was pointless, especially since the men were equally responsible for the activities in question.
”I’m probably not the one to ask...but if I were you. I’d focus on your man. He needs to know what the problem was, and why it’s not okay. From there kiddo, it’s all up to him, and you.”
