The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

He told the truth.
For some reason, that was a little poignant, and it made Riley feel more than a little bit silly. Why was she always so suspicious? Why did she always want to believe the worst, despite the fact that Aurum had repeatedly proven that he was one of the good guys?
Riley supposed it was something she would have to work on.
”A job offer sounds like good news.” she said evenly.
And Ami...
Of course it had been Ami. Riley had thought they’d gotten somewhere that day with the talk they’d had. Guess not.

Hmm. Girlfriend.
Something in the back of her mind told Riley that the word ‘girlfriend’ was not what she needed to be focusing on. But it was what she was focusing on.
Was that what this was? Riley frowned as Aurum finished his conversation with his perfect little high school sweetheart.
Girlfriend. It was a word she hadn’t used, or had applied to her in a really long time. She supposed it made sense, what with the L-word getting thrown around and her spending the night like she belonged in his apartment. Still. The word rang odd in her ears, even if in context it made her feel slightly better about the whole situation.
The phone call ended with a ‘Merry Christmas’ and Aurum turned to look at her.
Test time, students.
”What was that all about?” Riley asked, stretching like a cat under the covers.
Aurum didn’t know that she knew who Viletta was. Would he admit it? Or something else?

Riley had been awake for a while when the phone started to ring, thinking about Christmas morning and all of the things that it meant.
Normally, she’d have been scrambling around quietly in her bare feet, gathering pieces of clothing and doing her best to get away without waking up the person in the bed. This morning, Christmas morning, Riley simply snuggled down deeper in the sheets and blankets, and maybe scooted a little closer to Aurum as he slept.
Last night had been...far less rushed than the elevator, and Riley smiled slightly at the fresh memory.
Then the phone rang.
And rang.
...and rang.
Aurum stirred and Riley shut her eyes, the better to let him think she was still sleeping. She could hear him, fishing around for the phone...then speaking.
Then. The name. The movement.
Riley froze. Why was she calling? On Christmas morning. The high school sweetheart. The perfect one that Ami had told her about.
Riley didn’t say anything, she just lay there, eyes open and watching Aurum to see what happened next.

Okay. Yeah. I’ll stay. Riley responded in kind to Aurum’s invitation.
Actions were speaking loudly, and what other response could she give? It was cold outside. And Aurum didn’t want to drive her. And scary people rode the late night busses.

Busses done for the night? There were all night busses you could catch if you knew the right places to look, but Riley didn’t point that out. He was working hard to get her to stay, and he’d brought up the cold.
It was cold outside.
And...
”It is warm here.” she said.
”Well...” Riley said, a coy smile curving her lips.
”If you’ve got the space...and you don’t mind a free loader crashing here for the night....”

It was late...but it wasn’t that late. Heck, they’d been out much later on Halloween...
Aurum didn’t seem inclined to drive her home though, and Riley really was very comfortable. The kiss on the forehead wasn’t doing a lot to discourage her from sticking around a while longer either.
Was he asking her to spend the night? At his place? The concept was an interesting one, and one that Riley was surprised to find she didn't mind all that much. This was...kind of a big deal.

Aurum agreed, and that’s what Riley liked about him. He didn’t need all the melodramatic declarations and mushy word play that some people seemed to require in order to be with someone. He just...wanted to be.
So. They were.
The movie played on, and Riley just stayed right where she was, content to sip good cocoa and watch.
The ending came, and Riley had to smile at the little girl. The bell was ringing, angels were getting wings all over the place. It was good stuff.
It was also late.
”Time flies I guess...like an angel that just got his wings...” Riley said with a sugar sweet smile.

He had seen the movie. Riley smiled and nodded her head as he explained that it was his second favorite. What was the first? She wondered, and then forgot to wonder any more with the path his hand took into her hair.
Uh oh. He’d found a major weakness. One that guys so very often didn’t exploit. Leaning her head into his hand, Riley looked back, the familiar words of the movie playing in the background and nodded her head.
”Yeah. I like that the whole thing isn’t all mushy and feel good. It’s more realistic.”

Riley had to chuckle at Aurum’s proclamation. ”That’s reason enough to stick around for a while.” she said. Apparently teasing was the order of the night.
Aurum tossed her a blanket, and Riley caught it with one hand, taking a moment to set down her cup before sitting down and wrapping up.
Once the movie was started, Aurum returned and Riley graciously shared her blanket.
This…was definitely okay, she thought as he draped an arm around her and they prepared for the movie.
”You seen this before?” Riley asked as the opening credits started to play. Yes, the case had been opened, but Aurum’s house did resemble an boarding house at times.

And then there was cocoa. Warm cocoa, that Aurum had made himself. That was going to be delicious. Yeah. This was better than coffee and a giant tree. Much better.
Aurum also approved of her choice in movie. Riley smiled, pleased that they were on the same page and followed as he made his way back towards the living room.
Now that they were there, Riley took the mug Aurum offered and sipped.
”Mmmm…” Riley said, approval evident in her not-exactly-verbal response.
”How am I ever supposed to drink Swiss Miss again?” she asked, sinking down onto the cushions of the couch and waiting for Aurum to get the movie started.

Aurum went to make what was sure to be amazing cocoa and Riley slipped out of her shoes and made her way to the cabinet Aurum had indicated. There were a lot of movies, a vast majority of which were not Christmas themed. Riley was kind of in the mood though, so she searched until she found the right one.
Comedy hadn’t seemed entirely appropriate for some reason, but ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ Had jumped out at her from its shelf. It was a classic, and something Riley hadn’t seen all the way through more than once. Yes. That would be perfect.
To be honest, Riley was scared to fiddle with Aurum’s electronics, guys could be so picky about that sort of things, so she took the box with her and made her way to the kitchen to watch Aurum at work. Surely he’d find a way to put more ingredients into hot chocolate than were decent…and it would be delicious.

”Only if you make it.” Riley teased when Aurum offered cocoa. By this time they both knew she was no good for things like that. Movies were good as well though, and Riley liked the way their evening was starting to shape up.
So off they went, to the bike, and off to Aurum’s apartment.
The ride wasn’t all that long, despite the heavy traffic from last minute shoppers and Riley simply held on and enjoyed the scenery. The decorations and lights really were nice to see, even from the inside of a motorcycle helmet.
Soon enough, they arrived and Aurum parked the bike. Up they went to the apartment and inside.
”So. Which movie?” Riley said, already shrugging out of her coat.
