The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Well, Riley supposed, the one good thing about this was that no photographer or site director would ever be dumb enough to think that this was a good idea again. As the guy, Akshay, continued to try and fail to strike a single decent pose, Riley stayed right where she was. It was a nice reminder to everyone on the set that she was the professional here.
Words filtered through, and Riley realized what the guy with the camera was suggesting. Up she sat, only to see the resolve in Akshay’s shoulders and the eager look on the photographers face. The next few moments were spent in alternate waves of mental cursing and mental reminders at just how much she was getting paid to put up with this crap.
The skinny, awkward boy approached, and Riley leaned back against the pillar… and back…. And back. Part of her wished she could simply disappear through the thing and fall through the floor. It didn’t happen though, and then he was whispering to her. And then he was right the hell in her face, touching her face.
Riley wanted to squirm out of her skin. She just didn’t let people touch her like this, not even in the line of work. The photographer was barking instructions, and she realized that the longer she fought the inevitable, the longer this whole thing was going to take. With visible effort, she relaxed and started doing her job. The shutter on the camera started clicking.

Geez. He was simply too pathetic to be angry with, Riley decided as she rolled her eyes and turned away. The kid was on his own for now. He’d either deal with is jitters or he’d scram. Honestly, Riley didn’t know which she’d prefer, she could only hope that either way he’d chill the hell out and stop being a creep.
Just in time, the photographer stepped up and called them to attention. It was time to start the shoot.
Thank. God. At least now they’d be able to get down to business.
The photographer did what photographers do, and Riley adopted the pose she’d been asked to adopt.
Then Aquaboy got his instructions.
Seriously? Seduction was the name of today’s game? It figured.
Shooting eye daggers at the photographer only made him grin, so Riley settled for what she hoped was a pretty pout and waited for her “colleague” to make his move.

Dear lord was her patience waning. Riley sighed and tried to run a hand through her hair, but ran into a wall of hairspray and ratting instead. The guy was getting more and more excited by the second, and if she wasn’t careful he was going to do something incredibly ridiculous like swallow his tongue. Then where would she be?
Taking a deep breath and praying to whatever celestial entity had chosen to pay attention at the moment, Riley grasped around for something to say in response to the last question. What did someone say to that? Had she ever had jitters before a shoot? Suddenly, Riley didn’t want to play anymore.
When she spoke, her voice was quiet and serious.
”Just pretend like this is the high fashion shoot you thought you were signing up for and that millions will see you on a runway instead of in ‘Heels and Wheels.’ she said.

And then there was a whole bunch of comic book nonsense that she could have cared less about. Riley tried her best to nod politely while staring off into the space over the skinny kid’s shoulder. Some of the words sunk in despite her efforts, though, and Riley gathered that they were apparently enemies. Awesome, that meant she could stop pretending as soon as they got on the set.
Only…that was apparently never going to happen, and this guy was just going to keep on talking. Familiar names started to crop up and Riley tuned back just in time to hear a laundry list worthy of her resume being recited.
Okay, this was getting borderline creepy.
”You….are thorough.” she said, still trying to put on a good show for the photographer and crew. Man, they were asking a lot today. As if the costume wasn’t bad enough.
”Yeah, well, whatever pays the rent, right?” she said, fighting down mingled horror and amusement that she was actually standing in front of someone who paid that much attention to her work.
They really had to change the subject before the clenched fist by her side accidentally ended up in his face.

Oh sweet Jesus in a hand basket.
The boy (because no self-respecting man would ever act like that) started squealing and stammering like a fourteen year old girl, and Riley simply stopped and stared with an eyebrow raised. This was just embarrassing…for both of them.
Not that it hadn’t happened before, but getting recognized in her line of work wasn’t the best thing in the world and Riley worked quickly to plaster a smile on her face before the guy could see how disgusted she was. The boss was watching, after all and the brunette wanted more work from these guys in the future.
”That’s me.” she said, only barely managing to control the contempt in her voice as she gave the guy another once-over. He was lanky, and skinny as all get out, features that were not exactly helped by the outfit he’d chosen.
”Nice costume.” she added, crossing her arms and shifting her weight so a hip popped out. ”But I didn’t think cats liked water.” she added. Hell, if she was going to have to pretend, playing the vamp couldn’t hurt.

Oh for the love….
Riley groaned out loud as she peeked out the office window at the growing crowd inside the building where the shoot was taking place. Sure, this particular magazine loved to do their own version of blockbusters soon to be in theaters, and sure she’d done such shoots before. That was part of the reason she was here. They were professional, they were reasonably decent shoots, and the money was awesome.
They’d never pulled this kind of crap before though.
An open casting call for the male part in the shoot? What the hell were they thinking. Every 18 year old mouth breather in the outer Burroughs had shown up for this, and they were all in their worst interpretations of a super hero. Some were nervous wrecks, but others were stalking around like they owned the place. Idiots.
As if she had room to talk.
Heaving a sigh, Riley turned and looked in the mirror. Two pert little cat ears peeked out from her hair, which had been meticulously poofed and sprayed until it fell around her shoulders like a mane.
Animal print didn’t belong on anyone let alone animal print that was laid over the top of a pink and purple gradient. Thankfully, the building was cool, because the body suit was made out of some kind of pleather or latex or something ridiculous and would have been sweltering in the wrong circumstance.
Riley didn’t even know who ‘Cat-Lady’ was, but apparently comic book nerds too her seriously.
“You’re on sweetheart.” one of the staff called into the general direction of the casting room.
Riley made her way outside, directing a glare at the idiot who’d spoken, trying her best not to wobble on the ridiculously high heels they’d handed her with the costume. At least there wasn’t a mask.
”Watch it, or I’ll test these out on you” she said, wiggling her ridiculous nails in his general direction and drawing a grin.
Riley rolled her eyes as she stepped out into the studio. Apparently they all got a chance to pose.

He kept her...
Riley couldn't help it, she snorted slightly into her water glass as Brendan made his comment. He really wasn't as good looking as Aurum, Riley decided. Besides, there was something so much more attractive about someone who did things for real instead of pretending...
Speaking of which.
Aurum brought up the zombies. From Halloween. The night of that first kiss. It had been a good night. The only problem here...was that this might lead to discussion about Riley's....little talent.
"Yeah. He helped." Riley said with a grin, "Turns out zombies aren't nearly as hardy as they make them look in the movies."
She toasted with her glass. "That was a hell of a date."
After that, all was silent for a few minutes while everyone got a chance to see just how honest Aurum was about his cooking skill. Damn, he was good. Finally though, Riley broke the silence.
"So is this what your firm does for the most part?" she asked Viletta out of genuine curiosity, "Contract disputes and the like?"

3 months? Holy cow. Wasn’t that just great?
Riley smiled and nodded, doing her best to fake interest in the story. Of course the two of them had met in court. Of course the two of them had hit it off when she’d been defending him in a contract dispute, and of course he’d demanded to take her to dinner in thanks. The rest had been history.
Her and Aurum? God…Riley wanted to roll her eyes. Just a little bit. She didn’t though, she was really making an effort here…and man Aurum was going to pay later.
”I dumped a glass of ginger ale in his lap in a bar.” she said. Still smiling.

Oh. The guy was a TV actor. Riley squinted slightly and tried to place him. Oh yeah...he was the law enforcement guy on that show....'Skeletons' or something. Oh well. He wasn't her type.
Aurum seemed impressed enough though, and obviously Viletta was. Introductions made, everyone took their places at the table. Riley was just about to interject something about the work Aurum had put into the meal when their female guest chimed in about just how much she'd always liked his cooking.
"He really is quite spectacular, isn't he?" Riley agreed. Why was something as simple as a compliment so hard to swallow? Maybe it was because she knew Aurum's cooking, and just how good it was.
"So." she said, not really waiting for a response. "How long have you two been engaged?"

"Of course I can." Riley said, plastering a huge smile across her face before turning and making her way to the door. Oh she'd get along just fine with the woman...to her face. This was Aurum's boss after all, and she'd never do anything to embarrass him in front of colleagues. Image was important to a lawyer, and it was bad enough that they were probably going to have to explain her line of work at some point.
The door opened and Riley almost groaned out loud at the sight of the woman and her date standing in the hallway. Of course this was what Viletta looked like...and dressed like. The woman had obvious taste, and was tall, even without the heels she was obviously wearing. She was very pretty in a very crisp way, and it was enough to be intimidating without the smile plastered across her face.
Her boyfriend was okay too. Or fiancé. Whatever.
"Hi!" Riley said quickly, to establish herself as having the upper hand. "You must be Viletta. I've heard so much about you. Come on in, Aurum's just putting the last few things out on the table."

"It doesn’t matter if I like her." Riley said in retaliation to Aurum's continued reassurances. "I don't have to like her. This is what I keep trying to tell you."
It was this thing that was apparently stuck in Aurum's head. This thing that he simply wouldn't get go. It was almost like Aurum needed her to like Viletta. The perfect ex-girlfriend Viletta. He thought the ring mattered. Riley knew better. All a ring meant was that Aurum wouldn't be expecting it when Viletta pounced.
Riley mentally cringed at the name...who the hell named their kid Viletta anyway? It was a stretch to tolerate the woman's presence, and Riley had even dressed nice. She was Aurum's boss after all.
"It's not like I’m going to punch the chick in the face. I also don't understand how this is a double date if you're cooking for everyone. Are you sure there's nothing I can help with besides ripping up lettuce?" Then again...this was the kitchen, lettuce was probably all that Riley could be trusted with.

”As if you even need to ask.” Riley said, trying not to talk with her mouth full, but feeling the need to praise the maker of the present.
”This is the first present I’ve gotten in years.” She said, casting a grin in Aurum’s general direction before leaning over to give him a quick kiss in thanks.

Aurum didn’t seem to mind the fact that he’d have to wait for his present. In fact, he seemed awfully happy in general. Yeah. Forgoing the blanket on the trip to get the present had been a good idea.
Niceties out of the way, Riley unwrapped and opened the box to find...
Chocolates.
Mmmm. Just the smell was delicious, and the whole gift was so Aurum’s style. Simple, meaningful, and...Riley looked for labels or descriptors. A tag or a barcode.
There was none. Taking one from the packaging Riley took a bite.
Oh dear God. They were delicious.
”Did you make these?” she asked, though she already knew the answer.

Oh good. Now she didn’t have to feel awkward about getting him something.
Riley winced, ”Yours is still at my place...” she said, refusing to elaborate.
”I hadn’t planned on staying the night.”
Her present, on the other hand, was sitting on top of Aurum’s chest of drawers...and it didn’t look like he was going to be the one getting up to get it.
So...
Up Riley got, completely unashamed of her lack of clothing. What was he going to see that he hadn’t already seen? Besides. She looked good, and knew it. The trip was short, but chilly, and when she got back to the bed, Riley snagged one of the blankets to wrap up in as she settled back down.
”Should I go ahead and open? Or do you want me to wait until you have yours?”
Sure, the second option made the previous trip useless..but Riley figured it was nice to ask.

It had been a long time.
A long time since he’d seen her. A long time since they’d spent any time together. Probably a long time since he’d thought about how great they’d been together.
Riley believed wholeheartedly that Aurum meant what he said. At least for now. No contest, huh? That was worth a smile.
As for the rest. They’d have to wait and see.
”Well.” Riley said, ”The job is definitely worth looking into.” Hopefully her opinion had been wanted.
