The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Everything moved so quickly. One second Aurum was grabbing that axe like the manly man he always was, the next he was getting some ninja shit pulled on him and falling back on his ass.
Riley had to react. Aurum had tried his best, and the fire was starting to spread. Someone had to do something so that they could get out.
If things had moved quickly before, now they were in slow motion. Blue eyes scoured the room for anything that could be used as a weapon and finally landed on an old paint can that someone had left in the stair well.
Riley almost whispered thank you as she ran over and grabbed it. Forward she came after that, swinging it by the handle as hard as she could at the back of the arsonist's head. Hopefully, her aim was true.

Things started to move in slow motion. It was funny how flames, fire, and smoke could do that when they were constantly in motion. Arms were around her shoulders, and Riley didn't even notice until she tried to move forward. Once she realized it was Aurum, she stopped, there was no way she was going anywhere if he wanted her to stay.
They needed to cover their mouths, and as Aurum tugged at the collar of her shirt, Riley pulled it up to oblige him. There was no point in suffocating, but if that guy didn't move fast they were going to have bigger problems on their hands.
Speaking of which, the man turned and looked at them, and something about him made Riley shudder. He moved, almost imperceptibly, and the widening of his eyes and the fear that was written clearly on his face made Riley gasp through her shirt. She'd seen that look before, a couple of times.
"He's a mutant..." she coughed, her shirt not providing much relief from the stinging smoke that was quickly getting thicker. It was a split second later, and the man charged.
Aurum was big, and strapping, and muscular, but he also had ahold of Riley. There was no time to move though, so she braced herself and put a knee out, hoping to hit something squishy if a collision proved impossible to avoid.

Had Riley known Aurum's feelings about her couch, she'd have made sure he never needed to sit on it again. It was one of the things she loved about her apartment...even if it was a little ugly. It was the first thing she'd bought on her own for the apartment, and it was special. Still, he'd been smart enough to keep his mouth shut and hadn't said anything.
Now they were headed downstairs to get her sheets. Maybe she'd even ask him to help her put them on the bed. That had potential for fun. The stairs were much dimmer and darker than the elevator, and reminded Riley why they generally just risked the trip up in the unreliable thing. Down they went, down again, and down a third time for good measure. Something smelled funny. Kind of burned and hot...
"People in this building suck..." she said by way of explanation with her hand on the doorknob. "Nobody ever cleans out the lint traps."
The door opened, smoke poured out, and Riley cursed.
"Holy shit! Fire!" she shouted, eyes darting to the man standing somewhere around 4ft away from her in the room. "Who are you?! Get out of there!"

Riley was pleased. All too often, dates ended at Aurum’s place. Yes, it probably had something to do with the fact that it was in a nicer part of town, better equipped, and full of the kinds of things that Aurum was always mixing together into delicious food. (Seriously, who kept things like star fruit and cumquats just laying around?)
Sometimes they still came back to her place though, and Riley supposed it made her feel a little less panicked about the whole them thing that they did that. It was nice to come here, to see all her stuff, and to remind herself that she did in fact come back here almost every day. All of her clothes were still in her closet and drawers, all of her toiletries were still in her cabinets, and there was even milk in the fridge that wasn’t any more expired than it would have been when she was single.
The elevator ride upstairs was always eventful, and there was always a bittersweet pang when it made it to her floor without getting stuck. Out they went though, and into the apartment with all those reassuring things Riley had just been thinking about.
”We should do movies more often.” she commented as she shut and locked the door behind them. ”I really liked that one.” Sure, a movie was a cheap date, but Riley didn’t mind at all. There had been something about sitting in the dark theater with a tub of popcorn that had been so ideally cute and romantic that she wanted to repeat the experience.
”Hang out for a second, I’ll be right back.” she said, heading towards her room, only to stop in the doorway and roll her eyes.
All the bedding was gone. Every piece! What was worse, was that her romance novel stash was sticking out from underneath in a way that would usually have been covered by the comforter and bed skirt. Now, it wasn’t a sure thing that they’d end up back here, but if she was being honest, Riley didn’t want to take the chance. So back to the front of the apartment she went.
”Want to take a field trip down to the laundry room with me? I just realized that all my bedding has been down there for a while. Hopefully nobody stole it…”

The storage area of the shop, (since it couldn't really be called a back) was large and full of books. There was no end to the surprises today! It was a little dark and more than a little dingy, but it was nothing Riley hadn't expected. So she followed, still alternating between glad that the shop girl had agreed to this, and mortified with herself for going to such lengths.
And here were the boxes, just in time to save her from a mental conversation that probably wasn't going anywhere good. The boxes were interesting to Riley, who could barely fathom giving up her books, but many of them looked like they'd come from Frat Houses that Riley wasn't sure she wanted to touch anything until it had been disinfected.
It didn't look like she'd have to though. The girl from the shop was indicating other boxes that looked a little less like they'd rolled off a campus. There were a lot of them too, and that seemed to be a decent case for giving it a look, despite the probability that she'd be digging through something from some cat lady's basement.
Moving closer, the brunette tugged on one of the boxes to test its weight. Finding it acceptable, she hefted the thing into her arms, "Guess I'll start here." she said, heading back towards the "front" of the shop.

Not many people were willing to go through 8 or 9 boxes of books, (some of which had probably come from a cat lady’s house.) Of those people, very few were Riley Sommers and none of them had her stubborn streak.
What kind of book store lets inventory sit in the back of the store instead of being out on the shelves? She thought as she thought over her options and finally nodded. This was the only way.
”Yes please, if you don’t mind. I’ll even help you fetch them if you want.”

Awesome. Now she even had permission. Plopping the bag of already purchased books on the counter, she started digging through the box. So many of them were obviously textbooks that the brunette had to wrinkle her nose. New Yorkers and their educations. What was it with this place? It was like Seattle and coffee. Everyone in New York was a student.
Except her. The thought made Riley smile as she continued to look, but the smile quickly faded as she realized that the book she wanted wasn’t in the box. Back into the box they went, and she sighed in heavy irritation, casting another glance at the girl working behind the counter.
”Are there any more of these? The ones that aren’t out on the shelves yet?” she asked.
”I know it’s a pain in the ass, but I bought the second and third book in the series on impulse and I’m going to have some kind of fit if I have to go to another store.”

The girl behind the counter looked like she wanted to help Riley just about as much as Riley wanted to be helped. Good. Nosey helpers in book stores were annoying. The thought reminded her of the Full Circle, in particular the time that Aurum had caught her reading one of her books. That made her smile, even if he had been a huge nuisance at the time. The coffee bar at this place didn't have an Aurum though, and for some reason the pastries just didn't look as good. Yeah...this place would just have to be for the books.
Further and further Riley wandered, trying to locate the object of her quest. Romance was first. The books were alphabetized, but unfortunately the J’s were severely lacking in the titles Riley wanted, so she moved on to a section titled “Best Sellers” if this series didn’t qualify, she didn’t know what would. Again, she scanned, again she came up with nothing.
It was tempting to simply walk out of the store, they weren’t the first one to disappoint her today, but they were the most recent. Also, that little bell was obnoxious as hell.
There were boxes of books up on the counter though, and Riley looked down at the bag that was looped over her arm. She had the second and third books...going home without the first just seemed ridiculous on a level she didn’t even want to deal with right now. Up she slumped, chancing a glance at the girl behind the counter.
”Can I look through these?” she asked, already reaching into the box. It wasn’t like anyone had sorted the books or put them on the shelf. What damage could she do by looking? Besides, it wasn’t like she was going to ask the clerk to help.

What did a girl have to do in this town to get her hands on a book? Not just any book, the first book in a series. The second and third were everywhere, easy to find, sitting in stacks and piles and taunting Riley in every book store she entered. Why? Because the first book was nowhere to be found.
Sold Out.
In every single store she visited.
Sure, she'd heard great things about the books. She'd also heard that along with the surge in book sales, there'd been a bum rush on book covers and anything else that could be used to hide the title of a book from prying public eyes. As if the blush on the cheeks of guilty parties weren't enough to identify them anyway. The brunette had heard that too. This was no series for amateurs. She smirked. Good thing she was a pro at this sort of thing.
Except that she was being given no opportunity to put her skills to use. None whatsoever. It stood against logic that this last ditch effort would pay off, the books were relatively new, and people didn't tend to bring relatively new books to a used book store to get rid of them. Then again, if what she'd read was true, then all the boring middle-class housewives who hid the books between their mattresses and box springs until husbands were at work, and kids were at school might just be desperate enough to immediately bring them to a place like this after finishing.
Open the door came, in Riley went as the little bell jingled. Riley didn't really want any help, she wanted a little luck so she could find the book and get home to read. On impulse, she'd bought the second and third books in one of the stores so she'd have them when she found the first. If she found the first.
With a sigh, Riley moved into the bookshelves and started to scan. These places did their best to put things in some semblance of order, but without the benefit of inventory things were always a little hectic. She started in the romance section...it just seemed most likely.

So…that was it?
Riley still sat in the dingy little chair, in the dumpy little room, watching as Aurum sat across from her with the sandwich in his hand. He hadn’t really said much of anything, just acknowledged what she’d said, returned the sentiment, and gone on with what he was doing. He even told her that she should eat her sandwich.
That was it?
Realizing her hands were still over her mouth, Riley let them drop into her lap and just sat. When had her life gotten so crazy? She’d had everything figured out, she’d been getting by. She hadn’t really been happy, but what could a person really hope for in this day and age? Riley Sommers had found a niche, and she’d been doing just fine.
Then Aurum had come along. Sitting in that stupid court room, bold as brass walking up to her in that bar, taking everything she dished out and either dishing it right back or blowing it off like the petty nonsense that it was. He’d completely turned her life upside down.
Maybe it had needed it?
Was this happy? Riley wasn’t actually sure, but there was definitely nothing wrong with the way she felt. Finally, she picked up the sandwich and took a bite. Dear god it was good. How could a sandwich be that good?
”Thanks.” she said a moment later. He could interpret it however he wanted.

Somehow, with every little action and word Aurum said, something inside Riley shifted a little bit more. When he finished, and he was sitting across from her with the sandwich in his hand, the words flew from her mouth almost completely unbidden.
"I love you." she said, and as the words cleared her lips, Riley's hands flew to her mouth, almost like they could push them back in.
Why had she said that?! He'd just been sitting there, taking everything so in stride, like he didn't care about the cat suit, or the fact that he was sitting there in his fancy lawyer clothes eating lunch with her in a place like this. He hadn't cared about the nerd kid in the photoshoot, and he had known that she would like it if he showed up like this.
Why had she gone and said it though? She'd held out so long, ever since that day on the ice. He hadn't pushed, he hadn't prodded, or even asked her for anything in return...and all this time she'd made sure she didn't give it.

The...colors? He'd walked into the shoot to see her wrapped around another man's leg with her hand halfway up his thigh, and now that they were alone he was concerned with the designer's idea of color coordination?
An amused chuckle rose in Riley's chest and she couldn't help but shake her head as she made her way to the vanity and opened the drawer to grab to Styrofoam cups. They weren't fancy, but they held liquid and kept it warm. The lunch he'd brought sounded delicious.
Turning and making her way back to the table, Riley sank into the chair, careful to avoid smashing her tail, and set the cups down.
"I'm not sure color coordination was the goal of the outfit." she said, surreptitiously glancing down at her own plunging neckline.

And just like that, it was all over. They were walking away from the kid, Riley had some time off to gather herself again, and Aurum was there with food. The brunette couldn't help but smile, whatever was in the bag was sure to be delicious. Even if Aurum hadn't made it, his standards for food were high and nothing he ever suggested to her was subpar. It was amazing how well things like that could dissolve a previously bad mood.
Until she caught sight of herself in the mirror.
For someone who had never been ashamed of her work, Riley sure felt self-conscious. Well...self-conscious might have been the wrong word. In all honesty, she wanted to know what Aurum thought.
They made it to her dressing room, which was anything but a permanent fixture, but still nicer than some places she'd worked, and Riley pulled open the door. The room itself was pretty sparse, occupied only by a small table, a dresser, and a vanity with a mirror. Riley's street clothes were folded on the dresser, and a few other nick nacks were lying around.
"Sorry I'm stuck in this." she said, gesturing at the cat suit, "But I think they'll need me for more pictures later. You can set the stuff on the table."

And then....Aurum showed up.
One second, Riley was congratulating herself on the fact that she had made it through the shoot and done a damn good job of it, and the next she was looking at Aurum. He'd brought her lunch.
When had she sprung away from the leg of the Atlantean asshat? Why were her cheeks flushing? Bah. This was one of those 'girlfriend' things that Riley was really having a hard time getting used to. As she rose to standing, the brunette had to wonder if she was finally going to get a glimpse of the jerk that Aurum did so well at hiding. Sure, it had been hidden the whole time she'd known him and had never even peeked its head out a single time...but it was there somewhere, she was sure. That was the case with all men, and Riley was prepared.
"Thanks." she said, dusting off her hands and putting them on her hips. "We can eat in my room if you have time to stay." she offered, waiting to see what he'd say.
The kid was still standing where she'd left him, so Riley glanced over her shoulder.

Screw the money.
No seriously. Screw it with something huge and sandpapery. The kid was only supposed to be around for one shot. Granted, that meant she’d have to deal with another, but maybe they wouldn’t be such a….fan? This Akshay kid was so jazzed that he was oblivious to just how uncomfortable she was and…
And now she was supposed to get on the ground and act like some kind of submissive punk in awe of his manly prowess. Who had this photographer been talking to? Did he know something about the…”problems” she’d had in the past.
Was she going to let him beat her like this?
No. She was going to take his damn money.
”Sure boss.” she said.
She’d seen the whole Barbarian thing before, with the girl clinging to the guy’s leg. It was one of those things that had bled its way into pop culture and simply hadn’t died. So down she got, arranging herself just like the photographer had asked. Up she looked, trying to make herself look submissive. Considering the fact that such a look had never crossed the brunette’s features, she felt like she was doing a good job, but probably looked more like she was in pain.
Oh well, the photographer could get stuffed. This was the best it was going to get.
“That’ll do.” He said, and the camera clicked again.
