The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>> "I know they are pretend people, but I want them to have heads."
"Yeah, they do look weird." Maya allowed. Fashing stores were weird in general on a good day, even when one was raised in the States and not on some Ancient Greek tropical island. And the headless mannequins were disturbing, especially when they had scarfes or little hats on their neck stumps. Ugh. Some marketing people needed to get fired. So far, New York's fresh fall collection did not seem to impress the coral girl at all.
>>"These are very boring. Oh! I like the bright one?"
"Umm..." Maya blinked, looking at the shop window "Those are... not everyday clothes. It's a hunting store. The orange's supposed to, dunno, make you visible in the woods?" Maya never hunted for sport, but she got the general idea about the outfits. She needed to find another track for this shopping trip, and soon. "So... you'd like bright colors?"
>>”Maybe I’m just not meant to be an island girl,”
Nah, that was not it. Jesse could imagine Stephanie retired to a whole lot of fancy places, including islands. And yet, here she was, and she was nervous about getting the job done fast. She had to know Jesse was not going to turn her in, and her powers were more than enough to get out if the guards showed up. Why so twitchy then? She did not seem to be enjoying the job at all anymore...
>>”Listen. I left for personal reasons, and now I’m back. I have three pieces I have my eye on, and the questions are getting distracting. Why so curious, Jesse? You miss it?”
"Sometimes." Jesse admitted with a smirk. She did miss the thrill, every once in a while, although being an X-man and married to Becca provided more than enough adventure to make up for it "But that's not why I'm here. I thought someone I knew was hitting places like this, and I thought... well." she gestured at the X-uniform she was wearing, moving into another surface to give a better view. "I thought I might convince them to play for a better team."
The three that stood in the doorway looked like classic high school bullies. Gorgeous on the outside, rotten on the inside, and not ashamed at all about breaking the Queen's laws, or going after defenseless children. Maya could tell she was not the only one pissed at the fact that they dared to make an appearance.
>>”Must be difficult tae gie used tae a world whaur ye’re nae better than anyain else.”
>>“There will never be a world where I’m not better than a thing like that.”
Maya's hands balled into fists, and suddenly she was both sad and glad that she did not bring her archery gear along. Sad, because she really wanted to shoot the guy in the knee. Glad, because she knew she was gonna get to punch him instead.
>>"I’ve seen anglerfish better than you,”
Despite the seriousness of the situation, Maya snorted at the comment of the jelly girl. "I like this one." The barb hit home too, because the guy suddenly got a lot more hostile. Becca got between him and the teen just in time.
>>”Ah’d advise against starting trouble,”
"Oh come on, Lodestone. Please let them." Maya taunted. She wanted to kick the daylights out of some demigods ever since she rescued Kalos from the Necropolis. And these three were practically begging for it. "I mean... if they are brave enough to go after some defenseless children, then we can't be much of a challenge, right?"
It was not all that surprising that Steph had given up Jesse's info to Becca, back in the day. The redhead could be very persuasive, and while ratting someone out was bad etiquette, survival beat concerns like that any day for people who lived from heist to heist, especially if they had someone on their own tail. Jesse could not really blame her. It all worked out in the end.
>>”Yeah, sorry, I was laying low at the time so I needed her out of my hair. You’ve always been able to take care of yourself. Didn’t realize I was dealing with some secret admirer with the mutant power to tame the untamable. Mazel tov.”
"Yeah, never expected that either, but here we are." Jesse grinned. She was proud of her wife. Steph, on the other hand, was still doing her original job. Which was going to get awkward soon, given that Jesse had changed hers.
>>”Mhmm. I took a break. But I’m a job now, Jesse, so maybe we should push this whole ‘catching-up’ thing for later. There are plenty of good Mexican places with killer margaritas. I’ll be in touch.”
"See, here's what I don't understand" Jesse noted, slipping into another facet of the statue to keep up wit Steph "You are one of the best I know in the field, and you have been around long enough to buy that darn island, not visit it. So... what, did your accounts get hacked or something?... Why did you come back?"
The shadow paused. Jesse wondered if she really was the person she'd expected, or just another mutant that decided their shadow powers predestined them for greatness in the art thief profession. The recognition was clear in the strange echoing voice, though. New face or not, mirrorwalking was a pretty unique power (in this dimension, anyway).
>>”Jesse,”
"Stephanie" Jesse grinned, waving a hand.
>>”I haven’t thought about you since I gave your info to some grunge-rock redhead. I thought she’d be enough to scare you off to Bora Bora. More art for me, you know,”
Jesse blinked, chuckling a little at the admission.
"I have been wondering if it was you... well. Didn't quite go that way, but it did get me to retire. Kinda. I married said redhead."
Jesse felt like she might want to thank Stephanie for the help, but that was not really how honor worked among thieves.
"You're still rocking the profession, I see. Haven't heard about you for years... are you that good now, or did you take a break?"
If anyone ever told Jesse that she was going to be staking out an art studio to catch an art thief, she would have gleefully punched them in the face. And yet, here she was now, doing exactly that (the staking out, not the punching). The gallery was familiar; back in the old days, he had hit it once or twice, but it was never one of the big heists, given the lack of many reflecting surfaces. Right now, she was lingering in the polished side of some kind of a metal statue thing, keeping an eye on the exhibition space. The exhibit was highly advertised, and since there had been a few cases or art thievery lately, it was not unlikely that someone would try to hit it. Jesse, not being able to sleep, decided to keep an eye out. Because she was an adult now, and an X-man, and soon to be the father/mother of a newborn baby, and the world needed to be a better...
... oh who the f*** am I kidding. I'm here for nostalgia.
Shadows shifted, and there she was. Jesse smirked, and let her move around a little in confidence, before she spoke up.
"Well, look at that. And here I thought we were both peacefully retired on our respective tropical islands..."
>>"Makes sense. I'm guessing Jorge can just let the water fall on her?"
"Yup." Gawain grinned as they rounded the corner; the kiddie pool was not nearly as impressive as the Mansion's actual swimming pool, but Jorge had done some spectacular things with it in the past. That was one of the reasons why Angua eyed it with such suspicion. "He also teaches swim classes."
Celeste was going to help, but before she could she would probably need some new clothes, Gawain decided.
>>"Well, I don't want to risk losing her again, so I say after. But I really don't want to mess this dress up, so I say after. Do you have a way to keep Angua in a safe spot where she won't get away? If not, let's just do it now."
"Let's go get you a change of clothes" Gawain made an executive decision, steering Angua towards the building by her collar. Since they were going away from the pool for the moment, the hound followed, and allowed herself to be steered into an office. Once she was safely locked in, Gawain led Celeste to one of the supply closets down the hallway, and produced some boxes of spare shirts, pants, and the like.
"The counselor stocks them here in case we get students who need clothes." he explained "Or of someone's power destroys their outfit or something... It happens more often than you'd think."
As they walked in, Maya questioned her decision to take the coral girl into the mall. She had chosen a time early in the day (less people), and a mall that was smaller than some others they could have visited (less overwhelming), but still, from the look on Kalos' face, it might have been a big step outside of the Mansion's bubble of a comfort zone. Maya held Kalos' hand, and stared down the few people that were actually insensitive enough to stare at a mutant kid.
>>"Are the heads mounted somewhere as a warning?"
"Wh..." Maya blinked, once again taking a moment and a half to catch up to Kalos' winding train of thought, and then shake the implications out of her head "Oh God, Kalos, no, it's just... it's just dolls. To put the clothes on. They don't have heads... because they don't really need to have any? They are just fancy coat hangers."
Well, this was definitely gonna be a trip.
"Um... let's walk around, and you let me know if you see anything you like."
>>"Don't you worry, it'll be over before you know it. Do you usually wash her by yourself?"
"Sometimes." Gawain smirked "Sometimes I ask someone with water powers to help, but Jorge has been busy lately."
It was so much easier to wash Angua when the water could chase her down.
They walked out of the maze, and Celeste asked about clothes. The Mansion had a large supply of those in stock; some people arrived without anything, being runaways of kicked out of home, and some had powers that came with accidents tat destroyed their outfits all the time. Spare clothes came in handy in either case.
>>"Awesome. I have some money, so I can pay... Whoever. Or I can wash them and bring them back... Whatever. Yeah, I live about a 20 minute bus ride away."
"So, would you like the spare clothes before or after you get soaked?" Gawain grinned, nodding towards the side of the building where an inflatable kiddie pool and a hose waited, in the company of some bottles of dog shampoo. This was not going to be a neat operation.
Now that Gawain got a better (embarrassingly better) look at the two girls, it was clear that he had been wrong about Alice, in the worst way possible, since now he was stuck in a dressing room with not much proof that he was not just a run-of-the-mill creep using his powers to sneak around. He sighed, scratching his neck as the women reacted to the news that he was from the other side of the dimensional rift.
>>"Sorry love this is Paige and I'm Skye so unless she's changed her name I don't think we're her. But what do you mean copy?"
>>”Copy? So… are you from the other side then? Crazy…”
"Yeah, I'm from the other side" Gawain allowed, a little relieved that they changed the topic "It seems like... a lot of people exist... in some version, on both sides. Some have the same face but different powers, and some have different faces and names but... the same powers? It's weird."
>>”I mean, I’m not typically in the business of sharing my full name with customers and mirror-lurkers, but if it helps: I’m Paige Bookman. Not that I’m your blue-haired girl or whatever, but… yeah.”
>>"Look, I get you might be genuine but you've got to admit this looks dodgy. My last names Rivers if that helps at all."
"Um... nice to meet you, Paige..." Gawain waved a hand, but then paused then the blue haired girl chimed in. "Uhh... not sure if it does, but... the Alice I know is also called Rivers." So... was this girl Alice From The Other Side? Or just a coincidence of names and preferences in hair color? "Do you have, like... video game powers?"
Maya followed Becca inside the building, and she felt a pang of déja vu. She had been in places like this as a young teenager, after she lost her mother and before she found the Mansion. The intentions were good, and the Queen had done the best she could - the place was clean, at least, but that did not help it from being depressing. And mostly empty. The guard did not do much either, and the kids there were not exactly thrilled to see the strangers.
>>”It’s okay, we’re nae—”
>>“What do you want?”
Maya stood in a way that she could be seen. She did not bring her archery gear for this exact reason - gorgon kids were wary enough that they did not need to see demigods in hunting gear around. Maya looked at the green girl curiously, but let Becca take the lead.
>>”We’re here tae help.”
>>“That’s a shame. Haven’t you heard? The best way for demigods to help gorgons is by leaving us the **** alone.”
"Good thing we are not demigods." Maya pointed out. She knew that gorgon kids deserved people who were kind and supportive - but she had also been a street kid long enough to know not to try to bullsh*t them on their own turf. Besides, she did not consider herself a demigod. Demigods were...
"She's right. They are not. They are foreigner and traitors, and scum like the rest of you."
Maya saw the kids' reactions before she turned towards the voice in the doorway. If they had been uncomfortable before, they were definitely scared now. Mirror, on the other hand, was definitely smirking.
>>"Sure, I wouldn't mind helping out... I'm going to help give you a little bath, okay? It wont be too bad!"
Angua made a whining noise, and wagged her tail some more. Gawain was not sure if she was aware what kind of a trap she was walking into, but at least now there were two of them, and Celeste could assist getting the hound at least marginally cleaner before she bolted again. He grinned, and began leading the way out of the maze, one hand on Angua's collar to keep her from getting lost again.
>>"Um, I might need a change of clothes afterwards though. Is there a place to get some around here...?"
"Well, we have all kinds of spare clothes inside" Gawain nodded towards the building, then glanced at Celeste "You're a commuter student?"
>>"True, true. Administration can be pretty tedious and boring - you probably even handled some of my files then, actually,"
Gawain was fairly sure that he had not, but there was really no way to react to that comment. If he had, then he was in the awkward position of knowing very private details about the girl, without her knowing anything of the sort about him, and Gawain knew that if things were the other way around, he would feel ambiguous about that too. And if he he admitted that he had not seen her file, then his claim as an administration sounded wobbly too. Instead he kept looking for Angua, who eventually made an appearance. Celeste seemed thrilled.
>>"Hi there, Angua! How are you? I'm so glad we found each other! You're such a cute little puppy dog, I'm so happy to meet you! Soooo cute!"
Gawain chuckled as he watched the large hound woo the blonde girl, apparently cheerful about being called a 'little puppy' (a rare occurrence for a dog that was tall enough to put her front paws on Gawain's shoulders). Angua wagged her tail and wiggled like a puppy as she got her ear scratched.
"We'll see how cheerful she is when we get to the bathing part..." he smirked "You... wouldn't have time to give me a hand with that, would you?..."
"Yup." Gawain nodded, noting the appreciation in her voice. She had to be new to the Mansion, and yet she knew about the X-men, and apparently liked them as well. Or at least thought that they were cool. In a way. Most people did not consider being a vigilante a legitimate career option, but Mirror had ended up with it somehow anyway, and that was easier done than explained.
They took another turn, and Gawain listened for rustling in the hedges. Angua was trying to work her way through somewhere.
>>"I got to New York a few months ago from Canada. I just got enrolled a few days ago to finish up high school diploma. In the meantime, I've just been a waitress and volunteer for the library. Not nearly as exciting as you!"
"Administration is not as exciting as it sounds." Gawain smirked. She really was new, then, and also a legitimate high school student. Not everyone at the Mansion was... "Welcome to Xavier's, then." Gawain was a Mansion greeter, even when off duty.
They turned another corner, and the Irish wolfhound bounded up, wagging her tail with loud swooshes, licking Gawain's hands, and sniffing at Celeste curiously.
"There you are!" Gawain grinned, petting the dog "Celeste, this is Angua."
Celeste agreed to look for Angua before they left the maze. Gawain led the way, taking turns, occasionally whistling for the dog; once there was a bark from ahead, but Angua probably could not follow the whistle as easily as she wanted to. Even for her considerable size, the hedges were still too tall to jump. The bark at least gave Gawain a sense of direction, as long as the dog stayed put.
>>"So... Are you a student here?... I mean, are you a student here?"
"Used to be" Gawain chuckled at the hesitant question "Ended up at the Mansion when I was sixteen. Now I work here. I do power training, mostly, some administration... and I'm on the X-team. How about you?"
