The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Maya ducked out of the way of yet another tentacle as her attacker gurgled obscenities not nearly as harsh as the tiny fluffy bird did as she skidded to safety. Maya really did not want to have to worry about the kiwi as well as her own person, not to mention the safety of the people gawking outside the building. This whole octopus mess needed to end right here and right now, and short of a kill shot, there was only one way to do it.
Maya really, really did not want to do it.
"Oh, for f*** sake..." she muttered, bracing herself before she made a run for the nearest sizable reflecting surface - a full-length mirror in the waiting area that she suspected might have security cameras on the other side, but it still worked for her intended purpose, and somehow it had managed to avoid the destruction earlier. She skidded to a halt just short of the mirror and turned, trying to hold her breath as she faced down the octopus.
"This is gonna suck..." it was going to become her catchphrase if she kept resorting to this. But really, there was an adorable cinnamon bun of a bystander at stake.
The moment a tentacle wrapped itself around Maya's legs, she leaned back, and merged into the mirror. There was a sucking sound as her powers dragged the octopus along for the ride against his expressed will, and then suddenly the bank space was empty, and he full length mirror was full of a spaghetti of flailing appendages. Maya struggled towards the exit from the other side, but the guy was not about to let her go that easily...
Maya's ears were ringing, and the air had been knocked out of her lungs by the impact. The next thing she could comprehend was that she was lying on the floor in a not-very-heroic position, there were gurgling sounds in the background that were not exactly promising, and a small, fuzzy creature was tapping urgently next to her ear, with only made the ringing worse.
>>”B***h, you better get up. He doesn't look done with fulfilling his hentai fantasy!”
Adorable, small fuzzy creatures had no business having a potty mouth like that. Unless they were in North Lawns. ... were they in North Lawns?...
Maya shook her head, looking up just to see octopus dude back on his feet. Tentacles. Hentai. Right.
Another tentacle lashed out in their direction. Maya only had time to swat at the bird, but luckily it was tiny enough to spin away on the polished floor all on her own as Maya lunged the other way, narrowly escaping the second hit. Sadly, her bow clattered across the floor in a third direction, and now she was weaponless as she got back to her feet.
"I am really bored of this!" she yelled in frustration at the gurgling opponent.
Jesse saw the faint smile on Steph's face. It was... genuine, like someone whose best pert of her life was this other human being in it, and Jesse could understand that. She had the same kind of smile, when she talked about Becca, or their kids. These were the best things in life, and they also made someone the most vulnerable to all. And evil ***holes like Poseidon knew that.
"Um... congratulations?"
Stephanie as a mother. Wonders never ceased.
>>”I don’t even know what he’d do. If he’d take her. If he’d… I know he can get to her and that’s enough reason to do whatever I have to do to keep her safe.”
It made sense. Jesse had to admit that she would have done the same thing. Well, that, or gone after the bad guy directly, but she did not know exactly who he was, or what he could do, so it was easy to daydream about heroics when it was not her own family on the line...
>>”Can you understand, Jesse? This is the best and only choice I have. It’s just like how I always used to work anyway… mostly.”
"I understand." Jesse sighed "I have a kid... kids too." Soon to be two of them. Which was both exciting and terrifying.
"So... it's just you?"
Being a single parent was tough to begin with, but in this case...
>>"Yeah, Juliette actually is the one who brought me down that hallway when I finally gained the courage to show up."
So, she was a new student, but already registered. Good. Gawain was not as fond of the paperwork par of accepting new residents as he was of showing the Mansion off to them. And they have not yet gotten to the coolest parts... she had seen the Maze, and the common areas. The building had so much more to offer.
>>"I live with an older lady right now, like really old. She's... Going through a lot, so I'm staying with her until she's stable. She kinda was my saving grave when I first got here."
"Oh. I see." Gawain nodded. It made sense. Having someone to take care of, or someone who was an important person in one's life, it totally made sense she would not want to move into the Mansion yet. They did not get many commuter students, but it was also not unheard of.
"Well, whether or not you life here, you have access to most of the things." he shrugged "Infirmary is down this way, we have a healer on staff, everyone calls him DocProf. Wouldn't go to him with a papercut, but he's very good with all kinds of serious injuries." he chuckled.
"And down this way is the Danger Room. We use it for power training."
The bird swore, which gave Maya the distinct feeling of laughter trying to bubble up from her chest; she bit it back with effort that became greater and greater as the ping-pong sized head glared at her for a really, really long time. If you have never been stared down by the cutest darn bird in the world, you did not know how to prepare for such an occurrence.
>> “Listen gorgeous, kudos on knowing what a kiwi is. Most just think I’m a dodo bird. But are the nuances of my abilities really that important?"
"But... dodos are..." *snerk* "... much bigger..."
Yes, Maya was cracking up. It made her a horrible person, and it did not fit the present situation at all, but she simply could not help it.
>>"I, for one, would like to get out of here before the cops show up. Trespassing on a crime scene isn't really acceptable… …Now is it? “
She was not wrong on that one. But... she was also a kiwi trespassing on a crime scene. Tresswaddling?... *snerk*
"Okay, okay. Uhh. But what... were you doing here in the first... you know what, nevermind." she sighed "How about we get you ou..."
The tentacle lashed out without warning. Apparently, the stun arrow did not work as well on the dude as it did on humans - probably because of a combination of body mass and sheer vialliny, but for now, Maya could not exactly worry about that part. The appendage hit her on the side, and she bounced off the bank counter with a painful yelp. Apparently, the fight was back on.
The bird... fell over. Maya stared, clearly unable to comprehend the scenario unfolding before her very eyes.
A kiwi. A talking kiwi. A talking kiwi that was swearing like a f**** sailor. A talking kiwi that was swearing like a f**** sailor and clearly dealing with balance issues. A flightless bird with ruffled feathers and a potty mouth. Beak. A very, very angry tribble.
OMGSOCUTEIMGONNADIE
>>“’The f*ck’, she says? More like the f*ck is your problem?! You make it a habit of trying to kill innocent bystanders?”
Did she? The girl... er... kiwi... person was clearly not a criminal. Or at least not very good at being one. Maybe too good at being one?... Everything was really confusing all of a sudden. Definitely a bystander, and a pissed one too. Bystanders were never good news on a crime scene. They either had a hero complex or a death wish. But. Priorities.
Celeste was amused by the whole 'knight' thing. Not exactly in shining armor, but being a member of the X-men was close enough, for now.
>>"Why yes, good sir Knight. I am quite ready."
Gawain grinned, and let the way, getting into his usual Mansion Greeter routine. It had been a whole since the last time he showed a newbie around, and he liked seeing the awe in their faces as they took in all the place had to offer.
"So, as you guessed, this is the girls' wing of the dorm... guys are that way. Offices are down this hallway, but you already know that... Miss Taylor's office is down this way too, she's the guidance counselor. And also an adapted. Let's see... kitchen's this way, that's where the food is, plus the common room, with the TV..." he added, as they walked on, and glanced at Celeste "So... commuter, huh. Didn't like the idea of a posh boarding school?"
>> ”He found out I was in New York and he sent men to ask for my assistance. I was… maybe a touch rude when I dismissed them.”
Had the whole story not been headed to hell in a hand basket and fast, that comment could have almost been amusing. It would have made Jesse smirk, or smile, noting that Stephanie had not changed all that much after all, and feeling a little sorry for whoever tried to intimidate her into working for a crime organization instead for wealthy private patrons for cash. And yet, even if they did not get the job done, someone else did. And the story got less amusing from there.
>>”Poseidon himself found me after that. He made it clear that we weren’t safe. That we would never be safe if I didn’t comply... I’m under his thumb because it’s the safest thing I can do. I don’t have a choice, Jesse…”
"We?..." Jesse noted more quietly, seeing the fear in Stephanie's voice. That was not someone fearing for her fellow thieves, or even a significant other. And if the top guy paid a visit to her himself, he probably had some nasty cards up his sleeve. Assuming the worst was a safe bet. "You have kids?"
It was totally not a missed shot. It was a warning shot. Maya was hopped up on adrenaline enough to fire without warning, but not dumb or vicious enough to go straight for a kill shot. The person behind her turned out to be smaller, and a lot less threatening, than expected at the mechanical click (that was also totally not a weapon, by the way)... and she promptly got even smaller and even less threatening, as she...
... did what?...
>>”Are you completely mental?! You almost ****ing killed me! ”
Maya's mouth hung slightly open as she stared at the tiny, fuzzy bird-creature sitting on her fuzzy butt. The whole sight was so out of place, her brain was taking precious seconds to process it all. And then process some more, when the tiny thing spoke out of its tiny beak in a tiny kiwi accent.
>>"So, Gawain, do you know where that name comes from?"
Gawain smirked at the question and nodded, leaving the explanation for later. There was a story behind his name - both of his names, really - but they really needed to end the wet t-shirt contest before he jumped into explaining how one of his friends occasionally doubles as an each uisge just to add to Arthurian accuracy.
He returned after the shower and waited a bit before Celeste made an appearance again, wearing her original clothes, and looking a lot less wolfhound-soaked.
>>"Sorry, hopefully you weren't waiting too long."
"Nah, it's fine" the mirrorwalked smiled, opening his arms in a grand gesture taking in the walls around them "Ready for the grand tour led by a totally real authentic knight?"
"Let me guess, you have dental and also get to keep all your teeth." Jesse frowned. Benefits indeed. No thief in their right mind would actually agree to employment by the Syndicate, not unless they were devoid or morals and greedy beyond measure. Steph was a strong woman, but she was neither of those things. Whatever upsides the job had, it had more sh*t in the other scale.
>>”I do it because I have to, Jesse. Poseidon’s not exactly a man who understands or accepts ‘no’ as an answer.”
Now that she could believe. To a top criminal, people were assets too; things to be collected and used to one's benefit - or simply used to show off that they had power over them, and they could do whatever they wanted, police or government or even SUPER be damned. Jesse sighed, rubbing her forehead.
Tentacle Guy was definitely not staying down. Maya was keenly aware of what this whole scene must have looked for an outside observer - a woman dressed in a form-fitting uniform, battling an octopus-like creature in a shiny setting... was that anime music in the background?... Either way, she was not a fan of making a spectacle out of herself while at work. Thanks to Maxine, she had been recorded doing X-men things often enough, and it never got better with time. She wanted to shut this failed mess of a heist down fast, and get out the minute MRC showed up with their creepy robots in tow.
A tentacle slashed at her ankles, and she jumped, turning in the air and landing in front of the counter, shooting another arrow into the offending appendage close-range.
"What part of stay down was not clear?!" she snapped at the guy who was making gurgling-whining noises (or however octopuses tended to express pain and frustration, Maya was not sure what all that was about. She was also not sure if this dude could regrow tentacles or some other nasty trick... or even how to tell when this fight was really over. In order to shut things down short, she pulled another arrow, one she had added to her collection recently, courtesy of buggy META bots - this one came with a mild electric shock, not enough to kill, but definitely enough to stun. She just hoped it worked on marine life forms as well...
... it apparently did.
There was a sudden moment of silence, and a mass of tentacles on the marble floor. Maya held her breath, waiting for movement, or signs of unexpected trouble coming her way... which did happen, a moment later, in the form of a mechanical click from directly behind her. Maya drew the arrow with the same movement she turned around with, and shot it mere inches away from the pixie-haired girl's left ear.
It was good to know the safe house was still there. Not that Jesse would use it, or let the X-men know about it (unless it was an emergency). It was almost nostalgic, in a way, to be here with someone she had known a long time ago. Some things never changed. But other things did.
>>”Jesse… please remember I warned you. This isn’t a situation you should get involved in. I don’t want you involved in it.”
"Who said anything about getting involved? I'm just curious." Jesse scoffed, even though they both knew she was lying. She would get involved to help, if help was needed. She had been a rogue, but never a selfish person - and if Becca caught wind of an old friend needing help, she would have jumped in too. It was just the way things worked among mutants. Certain mutants, anyway.
>>”Poseidon. I’m working for the leader of the Syndicate.”
Jesse's smirk disappeared. She knew that name, from rumors, and she definitely had heard about the organization. Freelance thieves tended to both hate and fear it - mostly because they feared for their own independence.
>>”We’ll see. Now get going; some of us have to work.”
She would show. Jesse already knew she would show, if for nothing else than for the well-located hideout she probably desperately needed after the heist. Jesse's knowledge of current safe houses was incomplete, but she doubted that this one would have been given up by the community. It was too useful. She lingered long enough to see Steph in action. It was quite the sight to behold, and since she used it for criminal activity, it was not appreciated as much as it should have been. Once she disappeared down the air vent, Jesse left too. Last thing she wanted was to be caught on camera when the guards burst in.
She did not have to wait long before the shadow thief manifested inside the apartment. Jesse waited, leaning against the edge of a mirror on the wall.
>>”Jesse? You around? Or did you decide you had better things to do with your time than harass a professional on and off the job?”
"Being stuck in the mirrors gives me a whole lot of free time, actually." the redhead smirked "And this place is pretty safe, so. Wanna tell me what top criminal got to you?..."
>>"Whew, that's good to hear. I really don't want to smell like dog. Can we start the grand tour after some grand showers?"
"Definitely." Gawain agreed whole-heartedly as Angua splashed out of the pool, leaving puddles and suds everywhere. Both of them needed to clean up and put on dry clothes at this point. Angua topped the whole thing off with a revenge-shake, which made Gawain duck and Celeste squeal.
>>"Well, that's reasonable revenge, I guess, Angua,"
"Shoo." Gawain waved the hound away, and Angua trotted to lie down under the nearest tree. She would sulk and dry for a while, but she would be all the better afterwards. Gawain led the way inside the Mansion once again, leaving some wet footprints on the way to the dorm wing.
"You can use the shower in here" he opened up an empty room "I'll go use mine. Meet you here in a few?"
Cleaning off the dog shampoo and the dog hair was marvelous, and so was putting on clean, dry clothes. Gawain's hair was still damp, but he looked less disheveled, by the time he made it back down the hallway to wait for Celeste.
