The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

His surprise entrance made less of an impression than he had expected; then again, whoever was crazy enough to be out in this rain in this neighborhood had to be someone expecting surprises a lot nastier than a well-built man in a mirror.
>>"Oh, that's me. The master. Not bait, though. Usually, I'm the baiter. Wait. Why am I talking about baiting with Khal Drogo?"
Jesse rolled his eyes. Apparently the look he had taken was reminiscent of someone in some movie or something. Whatever. It was not like he could do exactly copies of people, but at least he looked intimidating enough. If it also confused people by the sudden star-strike appearance of a celebrity... all the better. Although murderous psychopaths probably did not have favorite movies.
>>"We've already established my status as bait. So what are you doing suffering the rain?"
"It's not raining in here" Jesse pointed out stoically "And I'm patrolling the neighborhood to see who the hell is sucking people dry. Which begs the question, are you sure you want to be out here?"
There was a struggle happening in Winnie's face as she weighed the pros and cons of taking the way she came in against mirror-hopping with a person covered in slime. Maya was genuinely curious which one would win out. It could have gone either way, really, even after she attempted to wipe most of the goo off on her (equally slimy) pants, but eventually, Winnie offered a reluctant had.
>>”Blegh. It’s like shaking hands with someone’s kidney. Urk… Ready whenever you are Toxic Avenger…”
"The things I do for the greater good..." Maya muttered with a smirk, and then pulled the girl into a nearby window panel "You're not gonna go kiwi again, are you?... Shifter to shifter, that POOF thing you do is kinda freaky."
Over the course of her mutant life, Maya had seen various shifters shift into various things. Most of them did it gradually, with more or less effort, in a clear progression that was sometimes fascinating and sometimes disturbing to watch. They had already established that Winnie was a kiwi shifter... but Maya had never seen anyone do the POP thing before.
Kalos looked a little overwhelmed by the fancy dress shop, and Maya could not blame her. She always got uncomfortable in places where the rich shopped, even if she technically had the money to do the same. She was really hoping they would find something colorful and comfortable enough for Kalos to wear, something that was her own and made her feel pretty.
>>"Is this for looking only?"
"Nah, it's for wearing. For those that can buy it." Maya chuckled, and then was distracted as Kalos walked past, and found something else to make excited, shiny puppy eyes at.
>>"I like this?"
Maya looked at the sari. It was quite beautiful, and bright, and probably easier to wear than what Kalos had on right now. Go figure, the kid spotted exactly what she wanted. The mirrorwalked smiled and nodded.
"Yeah, I can see you in this. Do you want to go in and try some on?"
>>"Sounds pretty exciting, honestly. Would hologram things interact with radiation...?"
"We could probably program them to." Gawain nodded, musing about the possibilities. The DR could recognize it when someone was using their powers; it was only a matter of getting the settings right to make sure fake opponents reacted the way real ones would. He would have to check on insulating radiation, though. Talk about a complicated power... As far as powers went, of course, his were not exactly classic either. Celeste lit up as he disclosed what he could do, and promptly latched on to the most exciting part.
>>"Wait... You can go into movies?"
"Yup."
>>"Like... What about T.V. shows? Can you go into them? Does it change the movie or are you just one of the characters, forced to follow along?"
"Anything on a screen, really. And yeah, the story changes if I make enough of a fuss. I found out by accident, I thought I was walking into another mirror..."
>>"Wow. Mirrors. Ever worried you'll get stuck in one? Does the gender shifting happen at will?"
"Yes, and no." Gawain chuckled at the flood of questions "I shift at midnight every night. Today I'm a guy, tomorrow I'm a girl. Maya is my girl name."
>>”Would be…if I were actually press. Remember… freelance. I just snap the pictures."
Maya sighed and rolled her eyes. Of course not. She was a photographer taking some excellent, close-up shots of an X-man (woman) fighting a back-robbing octo-gangster, of course she would not hold on to the pictures just to save said woman's dignity. It was one of the true dangers of the job. She had already learned that with Maxine, a long time ago.
>>"Listen…it’s been a slice… really, but how about you get me out of here? I have plans today and I would really appreciate them not having to be cancelled to talk to the cops all day. It’s the least you can do after almost using me for target practice. “
"It wasn't target practice, it was a warning shot. If it had been target practice, I would have hit you." Maya deadpanned, before shaking her head with a chuckle "Alright, stay back here. I'll go hand this mess over to the professionals."
In the end, it only took a few minutes. MRC already knew the drill with mirror-trapped suspects, and they were especially grateful that the mirror was movable this time. Maya gave them the run-down on the guy's abilities, promised to file a report, and then generously walked away so that the cops would stop gagging. Returning to the back of the bank, she looked around for Winnie.
"Okay, so... we can go out the way you came in, or I can take you out through the mirrors, but in that case, you'll have to hod my hand."
The girl with the pixie cut would have been cute, had she not been a much cuter bird just moments before. Now that she was back to her human self, Maya finally had the focus to wonder just what the hell she had been doing, sneaking into a fight situation. The camera way somewhat of a giveaway, though. Reporters were capable of incredibly dumb things when they were after a juicy story. And vigilantes, half-official or otherwise, were definitely juicy. Not to mention goopy.
>>”Freelance, actually. Gets me in more trouble than you'd think. Speaking of…”
Click. Maya blinked, some goo dripping from her hair.
>>”Sorry, that was the money shot. “
"You are one pesky flightless bird" she muttered, limping over to pick up her bow "Too late to say off the record, huh."
Celeste had the same glint in her eyes that most students did when they found out about the DR. The name was an absolute success, as long as one measured success by how many mutant kids try to sneak in there unsupervised to battle hard-light villains. Gawain was not even sure how Celeste's powers would measure up to fighting dummies, but that was a discussion for another time.
>>"Oh, nice. So, how does it work exactly? Is there like dummies that you beat with your powers or.. um.. something?"
"Or something." Gawain chuckled "Hard light constructs with holograms. Feels real, but there is less debris to clean up after." One training session in the old, robotic DR, and construction work took up a whole week. Never again.
>>"What type of power do you have?"
Not exactly an unexpected turn of topic. Gawain smirked.
"I teleport through reflecting surfaces... like mirrors. I can walk into movies... oh, and I'm a gender shifter."
Maya really had no problem disclosing her name at this point. She was a fairly high profile member of the team, and thanks to Maxine and the Brat Brigade, there was little the Internet did not already know about her. Not that they seemed to care all that much. And kiwi girl did not look like she was gonna tattle. She would not have been sneaking around putting herself in harm's way if she was like that.
Maya opened her mouth to say something... but just in that moment, there was another POP, and instead of a fuzzy bird, there was a less fuzzy, but definitely cuter girl, compete with a fedora and a camera, sitting on the floor. Now that she took a better look, Maya knew it was the same look she had before, when she shot an arrow in her direction.
>>”Winnifred……but you can call me Winnie. “
Winnie the Kiwi.
Biting the comment back, Maya began to offer a hand, and quickly changed her mind. She waved the gooey hand at her apologetically.
"Nice to meet ya, Winnie. Umm... I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume you're a photo reporter of some sort?" she asked, pointing at the camera, before she got back on her feet, surveying the scene. She could hear sirens approaching outside.
>>”It’s cute to think you’d be the one keeping anyone out of trouble.”
Jesse chuckled at that. Steph did not even know Becca personally, but she was not wrong; the redhead was keeping Jesse out of trouble at least as much as the other way around. And given their respective backgrounds, it made sense that the ex-thief would be the more trouble-prone of the two.
>>”He’s all that, Jesse. If you haven’t met anyone who’s seen him, it’s because you’re not talking to people on his level. He’s smart and persuasive. People follow him because he talks about mutant superiority and everyone knows he’ll do what he has to do to make it happen.”
Jesse frowned. She knew that the drawing power of the Syndicate was not only financial stability and easy pleasures, but also their well-constructed rhetoric of how mutants were superior to humans, and should rule the world. It was alluring to mutants who have been persecuted for what they were - but the relief Poseidon offered was the easy way out, and ultimately not a solution to anything. Not that his followers cared.
>>”No one cares about the guy’s cruelty. They just know he gets things done and they don’t want to stand in his way. He has money. He has connections. But the ways he can control people, with or without his mutation… that’s what makes him truly terrifying.”
Jesse sighed.
"I didn't think I could hate a guy any more without ever having met him" she muttered, resting her forehead against the glass in frustration "But no one's perfect, Steph. Not even him. He's gotta overextend himself, sooner or later..."
Maya rolled over and pushed herself into a sitting position; the last thing she wanted was for people arriving at the scene to see her all laid out. She did not need the fuss, nor the embarrassment. Especially not in the company of a kiwi bird. Who used to be a person, before she poofed into said bird. Maya was curious how that came to be...
>>”No. You scared me when you almost bloody shot me; shifting was a knee jerk response. Once I calm down, I’ll shift back.”
Oh, good. Knee-jerk kiwi. Much better. Maya would have been worried if the person had been stuck as a bird, because she accidentally shot at them. She did not need any more things like that on her conscience. Kiwi tying to meditate itself down to calmness was darn adorable, though.
>>”So… you got a name, sweetie? Or do I have to make one up for you?”
"Maya" Maya sighed, working herself up to one knee. She had half a mind to offer a hand, but kiwi did not only lack those, she even lacked wings. "Mirror, when I'm in the field. And you are...?"
There was entire too much slime in places where slime had no business being, namely anywhere and everyone on Maya's body. Including her hair. She wiped her face and eyes clean as much as she could, and then looked around, making sure that the villain was still inside the mirror. With that confirmed, she plopped down on her back with a soft splat, and caught her breath.
>>”Bleh. Sucks to not be you too, sweetheart. You alright? “
Maya turned her head to see the kiwi sitting comically on her backside. She had never seen a tiny cute bird gag before, but it was definitely a sight for the ages. Not that she could blame her. The octopus slime did smell funky.
"I'll live." she muttered. She was not hurt, other than bruises and possibly a few cracked ribs. "So... are ya stuck like this or something?..."
>>”That’s great, Jesse. Look how far we’ve come along from the old days,”
Jesse smirked at that. She had to admit, had Stephanie told her younger self that she was going to end up married and the responsible parent of one, going on two, kids, she would have either laughed, or screamed and ran away. As things stood, she was still worried sometimes she would wake up from an amazing and baffling dream. She didn't want to.
>>”It’s just me. I didn’t exactly have her with the love of my life. It can be tough, but it’s hard to find time to date when you’re a single parent and under the thumb of a mutant mob boss.”
Single mother. Single mother, thief, blackmailed by mutant mob boss. Nothing was ever easy. Jesse sighed.
>>”The last thing I want to do is get close enough to someone that he can hurt them or use them against me.”
"Yeah, I can understand that." she nodded "Although it is not always your choice. Believe me, I try to keep my wife out of trouble... but I learned the best thing I can do is to keep her company in the field."
Which was not the same as Steph's situation. Clearly.
"So... the rumors are true, then? He's all that?... honestly, I've never met anyone who's seen the guy. Are you sure it was him?"
Freedom of expression or not, Maya knew she had to put her foot down about her newfound little sister wanting to walk around in a hunting vest (and possibly not much else). But within reasonable limits, they could definitely try to match her dreams. Colors, for example, even bright colors, were doable. Not like she as going to stick out at the Mansion, regardless of her fashion choices.
>>"Y-yes. I want colors that aren't mud or plain. I want to shine bright like the sunshine."
Maya smiled, and patted Kalos on the head. The girl had a bad start, but she had dreams.
>>"Are there things like this and with spots for coral?"
"Um, not sure about the coral" Maya admitted, looking around "But we can definitely do color."
The shop was one of the fancy ones. It was where women shopped before going to Europe on vacation or something, but it was the most colorful thing Maya could think of, so she steered Kalos that way. It was not for everyday wear, really, but they were known for being open-minded at least. And Kalos deserved to treat herself.
The octopus dude was clearly surprised by being dragged through the looking glass - but even if the surprise loosened some of the many coils of the tentacles, he had enough in reserve that Maya could not pull herself free. If she merged out this way, he would come with her, and then they were back to square one. Maya hated square one. She was barely visible in the pile of green spaghetti, and it was clear that she was going nowhere fast.
>>"Um...was this all some kinky foreplay between you two? Because, if it is, I'm seriously going to be pissed."
"Shut it, fuzzball!" Maya grumbled, but the snarky comment from the tiny bird was enough to make her reconsider her situation. Instead of going for the mirror, she shifted sideways... and managed to tear herself free out of sheer spite and fear of being embarrassed in front of a kiwi.
A few moments later Maya appeared from the reflecting surface of a back window, and landed in a pool of goop, trying really hard not to gag.
They landed on the drill. Gawain had vague recollection that the mission was not going to go this easily; even though there were three of them instead of two, having eliminated an innocent redshirt from the picture, there was still a fight to be had. Gawain gave a heads up to Kirk and Sulu just in time so that they were not caught unaware; it would have been awkward to loose the captain because they changed the story, while Alice was so heroically... doing whatever the hell she was trying to do. Gawain glanced up, but could not see much, and then turned his attention back to punching people.
"Alice?" he tried the comm as he delivered a kick that staggered the enemy right into Kirk's elbow strike "How are things up there?"
