The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>>”I always advocate being yourself, hon. And anyone gives you grief, they can bugger off.”
"Thanks, I'll put that on a motivational poster with some cute animal." Maya grinned, not even ashamed of poking fun of the kiwi girl. She really got the most adorable animal form to shift into, even if it was largely useless and could not even fly. Which made Maya genuinely curious about what reaction the girl's mutation had garnered from her family.
>>”I think it was… two days of straight laughing? But it was understandable. He’s an experienced boxer. He taught his only child to throw punch. I curse with abandon. To watch me shift into that, well, I would have laughed too. But we’re good. I should probably call him back in Cali tonight. “
"Well... that's good." Maya chuckled "And I know we're done with the Pokémon thing, but I meant what I said. I started out as a shifter, then walked into my first mirror when I was thirteen. And a movie in my twenties. You'll probably level up to something that can actually punch. Like... a wallaby?"
Winni was giving her a lookover that Maya was not sure about. She was not currently presenting her best self; she was all gooey and sweaty and whatnot, and not in a cool 'fresh from the fight' kinda way either.
>>”Sounds fun. I’d like to meet your other half one day...you know, without the bow in your hand.”
Maya arched an eyebrow. Sure, people were generally curious about the gender shifting, and how the two halves measured up next to each other. But the bow... yeah, she was never going to live that one down. And it was no use pointing out that Gawain was an archer too. Winnie did notice the part about pretending to be twins, though.
>>”Accepting that you’re both sides of the same coin?”
"Nah" she shrugged "I was born shifting, I had time to get used to it. It's more like... people around me got used to it. And I was staying in one play long enough for the news to get around." she chuckled "How about you? Family handling the kiwi thing well?"
Talking about dogs and movies was all nice and fun, but it did not change the fact that Gawain was walking around conversing with a girl who had radiation powers. Not that he was afraid of her; but she was exactly the kind of mutant that bigots liked to bring up as a potential deadly threat to society (well, that, and gay people), and it was kind of fascinating to actually meet someone like her. Gawain wondered how she could get powers like that under control in the first place...
>>"Well, I learned how to release it in flares through my arms or through my entire body. I practiced on plants, flowers and weeds and the like. Pretty much they tested it out with a Geiger counter. Would see how much I could charge it, the least amount, however much came out. If it made them sick or not."
"Wow. You're not making a career in landscaping, are ya." Gawain grinned. Plants were still better than animals or people. And it sounded like a very logical way of testing her powers. However, the story was far from over...
>>"I didn't find out about the whole absorbing radiation until later - I realized that when I was around objects that typically emit some type of radiation, like microwaves, the radiation part seemed to drop extensively. So, I ended up sneaking into a nuclear power plant and got near the reactors. Watched the Geiger counter drop as I began to absorb it into me. It even made me a bit sick for a little bit, but everything turned to normal the next day."
Gawain blinked. And blinked again.
"You... absorbed a nuclear plant?!"
Okay, that was officially freaky. Like, very, very freaky.
>>"So, to sum up, I pretty much just shot rads at helpless plants with a Geiger counter beside them. Also, some slight trespassing."
"Wh... ookay." Gawain shook his head, laughing lightly "Soooo... very, very powerful mutant. Good to know. Welcome to school. And I thought I was showing off with the movies..."
>>”If I were a Pokemon, then I have serious issue to take with the game developer,”
Maya chuckled, and muttered something under her breath about the cute ones evolving into terrifying things. She didn't say it loud enough though, mostly because there was no way she would come out of a comment like that unscathed... Kiwigirl did come to a stop when she heard about the gender shifting. Leave it to people to cherry pick which part of Mirror's powers they heard over the background noise of all the others...
>>”Wow...talk about burying the lead. So...like…fully fully guy? With everything?... Talk about having the best of both worlds.”
Maya rolled her eyes. There were no new questions under the sun. But at least Winnie could see the benefits right away.
"Yeah, with everything" she smirked, arching an eyebrow "Taller, with shorter hair, usually. And a different name. But it's still me. Although I used to pretend I was twins."
>>”Damn is right. If I run, he’d find me. I’m still not convinced running to that new universe would keep me safe."
It was strange, hearing someone refer to another universe, one that existed parallel to theirs, one that they could cross over into like going to the next town over. It was fascinating, the scientific event of the millennium... and yet, people treated it like they would, with criminals seeing it as an opportunity and government seeing it as a thread. Jesse frowned.
>>"He… He is gaining contacts and allies in the other world, Jesse. People with finances, resources, and connections. Soon enough, he’ll have his hands in both underworlds and nothing will happen without his knowledge. I can’t risk running like that. I have one chance at running because I only have one daughter to lose.”
Poseidon was playing the big game. Both worlds, both underworlds. Jesse wondered who his doppelganger was on the other side, and whether they were a criminal mastermind too. The last thing they needed was to have two Poseidons running the mafia...
>>”I wish I could help you more, Jesse. I think I can confidently say I hate him more than most. But unless I knew without a shadow of a doubt Malia would be safe, I have to be careful. I’m probably telling you too much already. I blame the hero thing. Makes people trust you too much.”
"I like to believe it's my natural charm." Jesse smirked, although it was a little faint "Don't do anything stupid, Steph. I'll see what we can do on our end. We'll make it safe for you if we can. I'll try my darnest, anyway." she sighed "I should probably go. You have stuff to do."
"Are you sure?" Maya quirked an eyebrow at the girl as they slipped through some car windows, holding on as firmly as she could with a hand covered in slime. Honestly, a kiwi leveling up had a whole lot of possibilities. Other flightless birds... other animals. Maybe even fruit?...
>>”What about you? Is it all mirror-walking and attempted murder of innocent bystanders?”
"Mostly." Maya snerked, then shook her head "Nah, I also occasionally walk into movies, and shift into a guy sometimes."
Casual power drop. Maya had been perfecting the art form recently...
There were more questions than answers about this case. That was exactly why Jesse had been sent on a strictly recon mission, without sending any of the active combat people in. The X-team simply did not know enough yet to confront this villain, and they had too much at stake to risk anyone's personal safety. Even Becca had gotten more cautious recently. The pregnancy probably had a lot to do with that.
>>"Maybe they want blood? Or, I dunno. Something fresh. Just because you and I can survive on bread and water, it doesn't mean we should. Variety is the spice of life... I'm not sure if that's right. I'm not used to getting into the mindset of criminals. I just figure--"
Jesse sighed. None of those possibilities were wrong, but all of them were severely disturbing. And Cheshire was right, the criminal had to have a mindset, or a goal or... a life philosophy or something. They were a person, evil mutant or otherwise.
>>"I helped Shiv out a while back when she needed backup. I've been doing recon, to help the X-men out. Sharing intelligence. Not sure I caught your name, by the way."
"Mirage." Jesse sighed "I run recon for the team. They sent me because the... person probably can't get to me on this side of the mirrors. I was just going to gather intel we can work with."
Winnie didn't realize it, but she had been getting her mirrorwalking legs on. Some people were easier to drag along than others, some loved the ride, and some got sick like they were on a damn boat or something. The kiwi girl, on her part, appeared to be taking the whole thing in stride, so much so that she did not even comment on it as they talked about other things. It came naturally to her. Sure, she would still be stuck if Maya had let go of her hand... but she was not freaking out at least.
>>”Kiwi only. Talk about useless, huh? It’s a good thing I know how to throw a punch. Otherwise I could have ended up as someone’s pet.”
"I know it's a Hallmark card cliché, but there's no such thing as a useless mutation" Maya chuckled "For example, I'm sure you could make some sweet exotic pet cash..." she blinked, shaking her head as she heard her own words out loud "Nah, that did not come out right, did it. What I mean is... people learn to get creative with their powers. And you're definitely a smaller target when kiwi. And... maybe you'll level up later? Like... dunno. Penguin? Cassowary? That would be terrifying..."
There were many legends about the person of Poseidon. Jesse had always been curious how much of them was true, and how much was well-placed PR and fearmongering. People liked to assume the worst about mutants anyway, even the good and upstanding ones, so the guy probably did not have to do much to poke public opinion of himself in the right direction.
>>”Well… he’s not exactly hiding it with a nickname like that. Poseidon manipulates water. Any water. Lakes, rivers, showers, and the water in the human body.”
Jesse frowned. She had guessed the water part, for sure, but elemental mutations like that had a billion and one variations, some more powerful than others. If what Steph was saying was true, this guy had the power to back up his claims.
"Well... damn."
From the look on Steph's face, she had seen those powers too, up close and personal. That implication alone made Jesse's blood boil.
>>”That’s the terrifying thing. He could smash you with a tidal wave or drown you, but even without all that, he can grab hold of you like a puppet and walk you into traffic.”
That was truly horrifying. And no wonder Poseidon rose so high so fast. Charisma and manipulation were all useful and well, but brute force and well-honed powers were definitely an edge a criminal could use. Especially when he had no qualms about using them.
>>"What Hotblooded American male wouldn't want to be out in a rainstorm, looking to get sucked dry?"
Jesse groaned, not in a pleased manner, and rolled his eyes. That pun alone should have disqualified helmet guy from being out on patrol in any kind of situation. He clearly did not take the thing as seriously as he should have, and he knew it.
>>"Let me rephrase that. My name is Cheshire. I'm out patrolling for Shiv."
"Shiv?" Jesse raised a surprised eyebrow. This guy knew Shiv? He was most definitely not on the team, so he had to be some sort of lone wolf vigilante, or maybe an enthusiastic amateur trying really hard to impress Shiv. Jesse was not sure which one was better, but at least he was not a SUPER agent. "How do you know Shiv?" Cheshire, for the moment, was busy getting him caught up on the situation.
>>"So far I've deduced that this mutant only goes out during rainstorms, and that most likely, there's something there. Perhaps, they have skin like an amphibian, that requires moisture to stay good? And if the bodies they leave behind are dessicated, where does the water go? Do they need it? If their mutation requires a lot of water to function properly, they could be feeding. And if so, where would they hide between storms? Some place wet and dark..: if we figure out the answers to these questions, it'll serve us better than just waiting for a lady to scream in the night, then rushing to the sound of turmoil."
Cheshire was not wrong. Jesse decided to play along for now, against his better judgment. He kept an eye on the immediate area from his vantage point while he did so.
"So... a mutant that lives in what, the sewers? And comes up in rainy weather to feed? But why would they attack humans if they need water? One would thing rain or dunno, fountains would be easier..."
The moment Maya made the comment about being relieved she was not a fangirl, she knew she was never going to live it down. It sounded self-confident, for sure, but it was more a case of facts than being overly popular with the ladies. Not that she was about to disclose her dating life to a pseudo-reporter.
>>”Aww, have you just been setting little hearts aflutter all over the city and tired of all the attention? You’re cute, sweetheart, but I’m not a stalker.”
"There are stalkers, and then there are reporters" Maya muttered, before they moved on to less controversial topics. Like, her childhood in Seattle.
>>”There a reason? I mean, considering that you can travel via glass and shiny object, I’m sure that you wouldn’t need a plane ticket. And even the X-Men have to offer vacation time. So why not?”
Maya shrugged.
"I don't really have family there anymore" she answered; honestly, as much as she liked the place, she had never considered it home in a sense that the Mansion was home now. "And New York has kinda grown on me. My friends are all here. And some of them are as good as family. I know it sounds cheesy, but with mutants..." she shrugged "I'm sure you know."
She glanced at the kiwi girl as they hopped through some shop windows.
"So... is it just the kiwi? Or do you do other flightless birds as well?"
Poseidon was bound to fall. Jesse had to believe that. It was likely that he would overreach, get careless in his power, or make enemies crazy enough to go after him outside the law. Law, Jesse knew, was not going to cut it this time. If law had been enough in affairs involving mutants, the X-men would not have been needed to exist. The Jesse Steph had known back in the day would have laughed herself silly about ideals like hope and justice and whatnot... realizing that she believed in those things now was not any less surreal, even with time and uniform. The redhead rubbed the bridge of her nose in frustration. There was really not much else to say to Stephanie.
>>”Listen. You were always good people, Jesse. Even before you started wearing a cape or whatever. Just… don’t do anything stupid. Good, brave, and stupid are a recipe for getting killed, especially with men like him.”
"When did I do anything brave?" Jesse grinned, even though the question had not been true for a while. "I have family too, Steph. But it's all the more reason to help someone else out. You have a kid, and some *sshole should not use her as a bargaining chip. He expects us to be selfish. That's what makes him powerful." she frowned "Do you even know what his power is?"
Walking into movies had been freaky the first couple of times. Now Mirror thought of it mostly as a fancy version of the Danger Room, but he had to admit that saying it out loud still made it sound wicked cool. Especially with the world's endless supply of movies and TV shows to pick from.
>>"That had to been a bit of a surprise. One minute you think you're going into a mirror, next you're in a horror movie with chainsaws chasing you or something."
"Disney." Gawain muttered with a smirk "It was Disney."
He was sure Maxine still had pictures of him with butterfly wings tucked away somewhere. The gender-shifting was easier to explain, but people didn't always know what to say about it.
>>"Maya is a really pretty name!... Sorry for all the questions."
"Nah, it's fine" he smiled, shaking his head "You did help wash my giant wolfhound, so. Ask away. But, talking about questions... I'm curious about your own powers. How did you... dunno, learn to manage them?"
>>”Laundry? Personally I’d just set the bloody thing on fire.”
For two people whose relationship started out kinda rocky, Maya and Winnie thought remarkably alike. Or at least they were united in their disgust for criminal octopus slime. Either way, the pixie-cut girl was not as bad as she first seemed to be. Although less cute, now that she was not a kiwi anymore.
>>”Would you believe me if I told you I was just out minding my own business when I caught wind of this happening? Figured I could take a picture or two, earn enough for rent. Was just buisness.”
"Would you believe me if I said I'm relieved to hear that?" Maya ginned. She had been tailed by all kinds of reporters and investigators before, not to mention an entire guild of assassins out to kill her, so a run-of-the-mill photographer looking for some fast cash was actually pretty reassuring in its own way.
>>”Corner of 5th and 3rd,”
"Sure." Maya did not usually play taxi service, but this time she'd make and exemption. She did shoot an arrow at the girl, after all. But they had some time before they'd get there, even without the traffic, so she decided to ask about the accent.
>>”Dad’s a Brit. Mom is…was...New Zealander. And I was raised in California. You try getting outta that house without an accent, love.”
"Fair point." Maya grinned "Seattle, for me, but I have not been back there since middle school... Not since I joined the team."
"A saint with a laundry problem" Maya grinned. she would have to wast the X-uniform, although right now she felt like she'd rather just set it on fire. It was made of resilient materials, but she was not sure how well they retained smell. What she wanted even more than laundry was a shower. A hot one. With lots of soap. She grabbed Winnie by the offered hand, ready to get out of the crime scene.
>>”Yeah because walking in and out of mirrors isn’t a completely overused horror movie trope. No, I’ll be fine. It’s….freaky all right...but I have a big strong X-Man here to protect me, so what’s to be scared of?”
"Is that why you were taking pictures? It's a fangirl thing?" Maya grinned cheekily as they walked through the mirrorworld "Is there anywhere I can drop you off?... Also, I don't know if ya mind me asking but... what's with the accent?"
