The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

One guy was down, but the other two still seemed to harbor the illusion that they had the upper hand. Maya was, honestly, eager for a fight; she had wanted to kick some pretentious demigod *ss since she rescued Kalos. And these ones looked like they were begging for it.
>>“Blood traitors!”
"Oh, give me a break, Nazi Barb..." Maya snapped, but this time, Becca's reaction was faster. As the woman's nails shot out, the metal shield sprung into action, and did not only take the woman out, but also clonked the other guy on the head for good measure. That was two down, one to go, and that one did go very fast, in the opposite direction.
>>”An’ they hae th’ nerve tae call us traitors.”
"They are just angry the law is not on their side anymore." Maya muttered as Becca handcuffed the demigods. She was sure the queen would punish them accordingly, and she was also sure that many people were not gonna like that. She turned to look at the kids, all staring (at least she assumed jello girl was staring, she wasn't quite sure), and the guard who had been way late to spring into action.
"So, as we were saying... there is a school for mutant kids in New York City. Not as fancy at Atlantis, but the security is pretty good. Food, rooms, cable TV... cake?"
Maya could tell that the guy was not too happy about the whole mystery thing. She was about to give up and try to explain the situation to him after all, but he gave in first, deciding to just go with the flow until she could give him a more complete answer.
>>”Alright, this might hurt a bit, but do your best to stay completely still,”
Maya did. Not like he was drawing anything elaborate, but she wanted to give the experiment a decent shot, so she braced herself while he drew on her skin. It was a strange feeling, a little painful, but above all... unusual. Maya bit her lips. She could feel herself getting goosebumps, which meant it was almost midnight. Shifting time.
>>”What do you think? Are we waiting for something to happen?”
Maya took a look at the mirror. If the dot disappeared, so be it. If not... he could expand on it to make it something else.
"Yeeah." she answered his question, turning to glance at a clock. Midnight. She could feel her body shifting, and she exhaled slowly. She hated shifting awake.
"Soo... this is completely normal. I do it all the time." she noted, before the change truly began. She had time to reach around and undo her bra - it would have gotten awkward real soon, as she shifted into Gawain's lankier form and flat chest. Underwear-wise she was prepared, and she was wearing cargo pants which did not make much of a difference. Once the shift completed, Gawain let our a breath he had been holding. "So... um. I was wondering if the ink would survive that..."
Ami squirmed in his arms, clearly not comfortable with being rescued in such a familiar manner. Well, tough luck. Gawain needed a grip on her to pull her into the next surface before the rhino smashed the first one, and the last thing he wanted was for her to slip out of his hold and get stuck in a mirror she could not get out of. Not everyone was as happy to be stuck in mirrors as Becca from the other... Not the time.
>>"Didn't I say people were turning violent?! He's scared and confused. Whatever is happening with that disturbance, it's doing something that is really bothering people. I didn't do a thing to him. He charged me earlier and I ran away. He must have been affected by the disturbance. That's one reason I was trying to get us to coordinate. Because--"
"Um... Ami?" her explanation was valid, but it also drew the attention of the rhino mutant, who was clearly not done yet with being scared and confused. Or violent.
>>"Some people aren't handling this situation well, and need help! It isn't just crowd control. We need to help that rhino man help himself. But first, run!"
"Good plan" Gawain noted, before he pulled Ami into another mirror, then another, for safety's sake. The rhino guy was still smashing glass between them, so Gawain kept moving, hoping to lure it to a place where the MRC could take it down...
Maya was worried for a moment that Kalos would bolt. She hid behind her as the woman who ran the store walked closer; Maya kept holding Kalos' hand to make sure she did not scurry away and disappear. She was also wary of how the woman would react to the sight of the coral child... but she was not only friendly, but also completely natural, and very helpful. There were still some good people in the world.
>>"Oh yes. Many in children's sizing. The beauty of our pre-stitched sari is in the adjustability."
"Oh good. Because she wants something shiny."
>>"Shiny parts?"
>>"I even have golden shoes that I think may fit you. Let's go to the back of the store and see, hmm?"
If it took saris to make Kalos happy, then Maya was all for saris. The coral girl picked one that fit her eyes and shimmered nicely, and then emerged to model it a few minutes later, with sheer excitement on her face. Maya grinned as she watched her walk in the shimmery outfit, but noticed that her legs were not quite comfortable in it.
"You look lovely, Kalos. Is there something we can do... to help her walk easier in it?" she asked, glancing at the lady.
The guy was clearly not completely on board with the blind test, and Maya could understand that. It was a lot to ask from a professional, especially with something as permanent as ink. But she was very hesitant about trying to explain what was going to happen soon(ish), instead of showing it; and time was of the essence, since soon she would have to wait another full day before she could test the theory. She would not want to pay for a full tattoo just to shift it away the next night...
>>”I mean… I suppose I could do a little line or a dot somewhere hidden so that you know what will happen, but I do need to know what this is. There’s only so much I can do if you keep me in the dark, and I can’t do my job to the best of my ability if I don’t have all the facts.”
"I understand that" Maya sighed, taking a seat next to him "Believe me, it's just... hard to explain."
>>”If you want to do that now, we can. Otherwise you can think about it and we can brainstorm a tattoo for you first.”
"Yeah... let's do it." Maya nodded, taking her shirt off and uncovering her shoulder blades and a simple bra "I would like a tattoo back here" she tapped her shoulder blade "So if you can do a test in that general area... I'll show you what I'm talking about."
>>"Oh, I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have pried it out of you. But hey, I'm sure you looked adorable with butterfly wings."
Gawain groaned and rolled his eyes. He was sure Maxine had photos (or screenshots or whatever) of that stashed away somewhere for the Apocalypse or something. It had been hanging over his head for years. Not that there was anything wrong with butterflies...
>>"When my powers first manifested and I actually didn't have a lot control, I made an entire classroom full of kids sick. I had to transfer to a different school. Accidents happen, it's how we learn from them that ultimately matters. Also, no one else besides the people involved know about that, so, uh, yeah, you have dirt on me now too. We can't blackmail each other."
"Well... that sounds like a fair deal." Gawain smirked "Although I don't know how a couple of sick kids measure up to butterfly wings..." he added with a sarcastic grin. Clearly, Celeste's secret was more important, and more serious, in the grand scheme of things. Not that he would use that to blackmail her. She was a Mansion student now, if not a resident, and everything he knew about her was confidential. Mutant kids all deserved that much.
"Alright, well... you've already seen the Mansion grounds... and you'll see the classrooms soon enough. Let me know if you have any questions, but otherwise... ta-da!..." he made a gesture "Welcome to Xavier's. Again."
Maya slipped them both through a couple of more mirrors, before they got to a convenient spot to drop Winnie off. Maya held her hand and they stepped out onto the pavement together, in a corner that was relatively sheltered from prying eyes. Winnie, at least, had the decency not to make any jokes about Maya's latest relationship. Or her lifestyle since.
>>”If it's any consolation, I know how you feel. My last girlfriend… I thought she was the one. Heh. That's what I get for falling for an artist type."
"Yeah." Maya chuckled a little. Go figure that the foul-mouthed cute bird was interested in girls. She was wise enough not to comment on that, but it was good to know.
>>”It gets easier, sweetie. In the meantime…nothing wrong with being single and ready to mingle. “
"Nothing wrong at all" Maya grinned back, letting Winnie's hand go. "Unlike sneaking into crime scenes... But I meant what I said. If you change your mind about the team, you know where to find us." she gave a little wave to the girl "Stay safe, kiwi."
>>”Ah, piss off. I won't be some token team mascot. Besides, you want to check me out in tights so badly, Just visit me on yoga day.”
She got it all wrong, obviously. The X-men did not usually select by useful power - not in theory, anyway. If someone would keep up without powers, there was no reason why they should not be on the team, if they were motivated and well trained. And this woman definitely had the daring and the training down. At least as far as the basics went. As for the tights... Maya arched an eyebrow as she gave a look down at the cargo pants that were the usual part of her uniform, then gave Winnie a pointed glare, but she did not push the issue.
Winnie did push, though. About erotica and movie powers, none the less. Maya backtracked from that so fast she tripped over her own excuses.
>>”Had? You seem confused on where you two stand.”
"Had." Maya sighed "It's just... it lasted a while and I'm not quite used to being single yet. Not that I don't..." oh there was really no way she was going to get out of that one "You know what? Let's go drop you off."
>>"Yep... That's why I came here. I want to be able to do more with it, maybe something more... Beneficial than just giving people radiation poisoning."
"We'll find you a training schedule, then." Gawain promised with a nod, being all business for a second as he remembered he was, after all, part of the staff in the Mansion. He would make sure Celeste got all the help she needed with honing her powers. He might or might not personally chip in with DR sessions, but for now, a schedule was the first step.
At least, until the movie walking came up again.
>>"Sleeping beauty?! How did you manage to fall into it? Also... Was it at the beginning or towards the middle? I feel like there was some good spots and some pretty bad spots in that one..."
Gawain noted that he might need to start charging people for the movie walks... and he meant it. He also briefly considered charging people for asking questions about painful experiences in the past. He would be rich by now... With a sigh, he gave in this time.
"A... friend of mine decided that if she had been Maleficent, she would have won the story. And she set out to prove it. I ended up wearing butterfly wings or some sh*t. And we traumatized a movie matinee full of children. It was an accident... but I don't think I'll ever live it down." she gave Celeste a look "I have places I can hide a body if you tell about this to anyone." Whose body, he did not say.
>>”Please, you’re the one with the market cornered on stupid things. Brave, stupid things.”
"I know. I should really get back into the thieving business. Much nicer." Jesse sighed. Once upon a time, life had been so easy. It came down to artifacts being exchanged for cash. Those were the days. Suddenly she felt a million years old, like a stay-at-home mom having a book club meeting with other stay-at-home moms. Plus evil mutant mob bosses. And such.
>>”Thanks for… well, everything, I guess. It was nice seeing you Jesse. Make sure to remind that ginger of yours that she really picked a diamond out of the rough with you.”
"And your kid's very lucky to have a smart mom like you." Jesse smiled back, before she got ready to leave "Stay safe, Steph. I'll be in touch when we know more."
It was a mission now, whether Steph liked it or not. Someone had to put the brakes on Poseidon...
>>”Dad made sure I could protect myself. Besides, it wouldn’t look good for the owner of a boxing gym and personal trainer to not teach his kids how to ball up a fist.”
"Well, let me know if you wanna try out for the team." Maya smirked, rubbing her shoulder. It was funny, to have the lightweight girl punch like that, and also have the kiwi powers... Maya wondered what her dad way like in person. He had to be quite the interesting guy.
The conversation returned to powers - more specifically, move walking. Maya could see the glint in Winnie's eyes that promised nothing good. People had all kinds of ides about walking into movies, and hooking up with celebrities, or whatever... but even worse than that, it was clearly payback time for the little bird, and she was not going to pass up such an opportunity.
>>”That must be entertaining. Though, forgive me, but you’ve never...stepped into an erotica, correct? You wouldn’t even need an Octopus mutant. You could partake in your anime-fueled fantasies whenever you like.”
Maya's smirk dissipated as it gave way to a frustrated expression.
"Seriously, why does everyone keep asking me that?!" she protested "Can you imagine how awkward it would be to actually walk into a porno?... Like... just... that's just wrong... on so many levels." she huffed "People. Besides, I don't need it. I have... um. Had a girlfriend." And some benefits.
As non-Alice pointed out, it was kind of a long shot to equate her with Alice based on hair color choices and last name. Not scientifically sound, anyway. Powers could have decided it, although judging from Becca's example, that was not a sure-fire way either.
>>"What? No of course not, that's f------ stupid. Who the hell has video games as a damn power. Where's she from, this Alice. Because there's no way she's from the same place as me."
"Um... somewhere around London?" Gawain ventured, knowing that he was losing this thread of questioning, and with it his only excuse for lingering in a mirror of two underdressed women. He should have left a long time ago, honestly. But now they were the ones asking the questions, and he did not want to be rude. Or tagged by the big guy as a perv, whoever the big guy was.
>>"OK Paige, I'm not the only one thinking this is weird right? Because this is weird. Talking to a mirror, like some weird wonderland book or something."
>> ”I mean, it’s weird. But it’s not weirder than the hole in the universe, I guess. Still… hey sweetie? Are you… you know? Able to step out of that thing? It might make things less weird talking to you face to face. Right now you’re kind of like a talking TV.”
"Done that..." Gawain muttered under his breath, before he cautiously stepped out of the glass, but stayed close to it "As long as you don't punch me or anything..."
>>”So… I mean, probably a long shot if your New York is as big as ours, but do you happen to know anyone with the last name Bookman?”
"Um... nope, doesn't ring a bell." he sighed "Look, sorry, this was totally my mistake. I recently met my own... uh, copy, and my brain is kinda stuck in that space." he shuddered, then blinked, alarmed "What time is it?..."
Kalos was holding her hand again, and Maya was not sure where she had been lost by the train of thought. The sari was pretty, and probably a good choice, but Kalos had to have something else on her mind if she was hesitating about trying it on. Was she afraid of walking into the shop?...
>>"This thing looks like it has a lot of cost. It might be closer to what Atlanteans wear, but is this what people wear here?"
"Some people." Maya admitted "It is what people wear in some countries, and people who come from those countries wear them here. Also, people who seem to like them wear them too."
Was it too early to talk to a kid about cultural assimilation and appropriation? Probably. Even without the extra added layers of her being a refugee from Atlantis with special wardrobe needs.
"And don't worry about how much it costs. You need some decent clothes."
>>"Do they even have a size for a child?"
"We can ask." Maya said, for lack of a better answer. Did they? She spied the nice-looking lady inside the shop, giving them some curious glances as she organized the clothes racks. She was wearing a sari too. "Hi, excuse me... do you happen to have... anything in her size?"
To be honest, Maya knew she had a punch coming. She deserved it, and even if Winnie had not done it, she would have chalked one up on her mental board, to be paid later on. She had really been pushing it with the cute animal jokes, for someone who had only met this pixie person like half an hour earlier.
>>”You deserve that, and you know it."
"Yeah." Maya admitted, rubbing her shoulder "You really do punch like a pro."
With some training, she could hold her own in a fight. As long as she did not kiwi out when surprised by the opponent. It would have been herd to argue how the cute fluffy ball got on the X-mean team for a field mission...
>>”Movie walking? Really? How does that even work?”
"It doesn't" Maya sighed, circling back to the part of her powers everyone found fascinating "I mean it does, it just does not have much practical use. Fun, though, depending on the movie... although I don't like the part when I have to stick around until the ed, or die to get out. Some movies are long when you are inside them."
The whole nuclear plant thing sounded shocking at first, but Celeste was fast to backtrack on the claim - or rather, add some detail that lowered the expectations, but did not really do anything about making her powers sound less incredible. At least in Gawain's eyes.
>>"Oh no, no, I mean, I absorbed some of the radiation from it. It probably made them worry about their computers for a second, but it didn't eliminate it or get rid of it or anything. There is some pretty heavy limits, even for me."
Yeah. Well, if someone's limit was some of a nuclear plant... Gawain was somewhat relieved that she did not get caught with that one. If anyone, criminals of authorities, found out about her powers doing that, she might not have ended up at the Mansion.
>>"I'm not that powerful. Plenty of issues with it. Thanks though! I'm excited to be here. And don't think I'm going to let you off the hook for my other question! What movie did you get trapped into?"
"Well... we're here to help with the issues." Gawain noted with a smirk, nodding back towards the Danger Room in passing as they walked on. To her question, circling back to the less cool parts of his powers... well. Gawain muttered something that sounded like Sleeping Beauty under his breath, hoping against hope she would not catch it.
"I feel like I should start capitalizing on that power..."
