The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

When the noise started, Jay cringed a little at first. After all, his hearing was a lot more sensitive than a normal human's. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a pair of earplugs and discreetly placed them in his ears. It was nothing personal, but he'd rather not have his head explode before their date even got going good. They didn't completely block the noise; he'd put them in just enough to muffle it. He could still hear every word.
He pulled her a little tighter as the next band took the stage, by now having adjusted to the noise. He then realized that he never actually explained that little side effect to his mutation, and if he tried to now, she probably wouldn't be able to hear him, anyway. Oh well, he'd have to make sure to do that when they got done.
The next band up was a little more laid back, but the crowd was just as passionate as ever. On the one hand, this may not have been his greatest idea. On the other hand, he was rather enjoying this.

Jay wasn't going to lie, this was a pretty sweet setup he had going on here. This woman lived life by a very set schedule, and while he could respect that, it was fairly easy to learn. He had a fair amount of time before she'd come home to pick him up and go get the boy, Kevin, he believed the name was. Careful, Jay. You learn their names, you start getting attached.
It had been five days, and while he could easily take what he wanted and scram before the woman even got home, he thought he'd stick around a little longer. As usual, when he was brought home, he found his spot next to the couch and curled up for a nap. But, after living on nothing but dog food, he figured it was time for something...worth eating. So, as soon as he was left alone, he uncurled from his napping spot, yawned, then padded into the kitchen before shifting back human.
Of course he hadn't any clothes, but he didn't need them. Actually, he was kind of starting to like it here; maybe he could figure out how to live as a dog and only moonlight as a human? Oh well.
He opened the fridge, rooting through it to see what he could find, finally settling on a cup of yogurt. Simple, but maybe she wouldn't miss it. He grabbed a spoon and closed the fridge door, just eating where he stood, his keener-than-average senses listening for anything out of place. After all, one never could be too careful.
Though, he had to wonder...if a dog is taken into the house, and shifts to human inside, is it really breaking and entering? He savored a bite of yogurt as he pondered this thought.

Usually, crazy coincidences ended in bad luck for Jay, but he was thankful for one that turned out otherwise for once. Their fingers intertwined, and he found himself feeling quite relaxed, and he too was feeling emotions that he didn't think he was capable of feeling. He relaxed in his seat and gave a quiet chuckle. "You make a tempting offer," he murmured with a wink, squeezing her hand a little bit.
With that, the concert began to start as the first band took stage. He slid close to her, letting go of her hand and slipping his arm around her as a rhythmic guitar riff filled the hall. He let his hand rub her shoulder a bit, enjoying the music, but more so enjoying that he was with her

He hugged her back, smiling at the kiss on the cheek. Something about Zelda really made his emotions flutter. She made him...happy. On the one hand, he wasn't sure what to think about this, but on the other hand...he liked it. He found himself hoping something more serious would come of this.
He chuckled. "Luck actually sounds about right. Not that I'd change it for anything." He smiled softly. "Thanks, I tried," he said with a nervous chuckle. "Yeah, I guess we'd better head in." Taking her hand, he led her inside, navigating the crowd as they had to find their seats.
They were sort of middle of the road, not front row, but definitely not cheap, either. Once they sat down, he looked over at her. "Thanks for coming with me," he said softly before the show started.

Jay tolerated the vet, at best, though while he was being examined he did catch himself pondering something. How did disease or sickness work with his shifting? He had to guess that it would carry over like injuries did, but he wasn't about to get sick and check into a vet's office to find out. However, that also meant that he'd be able to run his con, because he obviously didn't have an owner. Well, obvious to him, anyway. Hopefully she'd never be any the wiser. It would really suck for him if she was some sort of mutant who could tell though....
And then, they went to the store, and he kept his bright-eyed bushy-tailed--literally--act going, looking around the store, tongue lolling out of his mouth. However, once they'd bought the leash and supplies, Jay had a choice to make. Should he be the well-trained, obviously somebody's dog, or should he go farther down the path of rambunctious little dickens?
He went with the latter, wanting to play and tug on the leash, occasionally running and nearly choking himself with it, making it obvious that he'd never been trained to walk on a leash. And technically, he hadn't. Once they got 'home' he looked around the house as best he could. He'd have to keep up the charade, but he'd have to find an opportunity when he was alone. Or maybe...he'd just stay awhile and reap the benefits of free room and board. And food, even though most dog foods sucked (the more expensive stuff actually wasn't that bad, but very few people put up that kind of money for a dog they found. And all things considered...that was understandable.)
When the leash was unhooked, he took off, scampering around the house before looking back at his new friend.

Jay almost couldn't believe that he was going on an actual date. But at the same time, he was excited, anxious and happy all at once. He and Zelda had hit it off very well when they first met, and now, a week later, they were actually going out together. And for once, Jay wasn't messing around. He had put on a dark green dress shirt, a pair of nice slacks, and...a pair of black sneakers. Sure, he wasn't 'dressed up' dressed up, but it was the best a guy like him could do. And the fact that he was willing to do it said a lot about who he was doing it for. He caught the subway to get most of the way to the concert hall, not really paying attention to anyone around him. After all, tonight was special.
He was almost afraid to admit it, but he felt he may have been falling for her, and he wasn't quite sure what to do with that information. So, he was just going to roll with it. As he left the subway station, his phone vibrated in his pocket. Taking his phone out, he smiled, seeing it was her--though really, who else would it be?
A few blocks away. See you soon~
Putting his phone in his pocket, he walked the remaining distance to the concert hall, and it wasn't long after that he saw her sitting on a bench, waiting for him. He walked over to her, offering his hand.
"Now how did I end up with a date as stunning as you?" he asked sweetly, laying on the charm, not that he needed to. He flashed her a smile. "You look beautiful," he commented, "as always~"

He nodded, visibly wincing at the word 'killed.' Sure, he may not have always been the nicest guy, but he did have some semblance of a heart. "Yeah...it can be rough sometimes. Hate it has to be that way though. At least my mutation showing helped stop my mistreatment..." He let out a sigh, trying to push his emotions back into their cage, deep down.
He found his smile coming back when she was close to him, however, and he loosely wrapped his arms around her. "Good." He winked back, taking her hand and leading her to the bedroom.

Jay chuckled, still warily sipping at the "drink" in front of him. He didn't know if it was getting better, if he was getting numb to it, or if he was just settling for what he could get--like he hadn't done that before.
"I'll have to check it on my way out, then. Thanks, though. Good gigs are kinda hard to come by, it seems. Kinda like good beer," he blurted the last part out with a dry chuckle as he took another swig. Yeah...it did seem to be getting better, but he still thought that he may have just been settling.
"So, what I do may have been obvious. What do you do?"

"Yeah, it's never that easy. Besides, I still say I got dealt a better hand than some of the other mutants. I mean, I'm not sure how I would be able to handle something that made life more difficult like...I don't know, being a human-fish thing...or getting a massive migraine after using a mutation...or only being able to shift into inanimate objects...stuff like that." He gave a shrug, getting up to turn off the coffee pot and pour what little bit was left into the sink. Then, he rinsed the pot out, and got the machine ready for in the morning. That way, when he--they?--woke up, all he'd have to do was push one button.
When he finished, he walked over, giving her a kiss on the cheek. "Maybe I just got lucky." Grabbing the notebook, he put it on the living room table, making sure he didn't lose it. Then, he checked the time; it was almost midnight. Man, how time flew. "Hey, you wouldn't mind staying over, would ya? Wouldn't feel right to have you out this late." Yeah, that was it. Well, part of it.

Jay listened, occasionally barking or yapping or wagging his tail like an energetic pup should, but at the same time, the human mind inside the dog's head was analyzing the conversation, making a plan. So, from what he could gather, the Dad was still in the picture, but at the very least they were separated. Good; if he were to be discovered, there was a less a chance of some musclebound meathead beating the everloving crap out of him.
Wait...Russel? He had to give the kid credit there; he never would have pegged any of his many dog forms as a 'Russel.' He was sure this visit to the vet would go seamlessly, so he wasn't worried there. It was such a sweet little mother-son combo though; it reminded him of when his own mother was alive, which made him let out a sad, involuntary whine.
He almost felt bad for attempting to con them. Almost.

Heh, little did she know, a lot of what he did could easily be considered unethical, but he didn't think it was the best time to have her finding that out. After all, he liked her and would have liked to see her again.
While she was merely entertaining the idea, Jay was thinking of an actual approach. Sure, it started off as a joke, but now that he was entertaining it, it didn't seem like too crazy an idea. "I have a few friends who may owe me a favor or two, so I can try to pull a few strings. And I just need to spend a few minutes watching and studying a dog to be able to gain its form. So it's at least somewhat intentional. I can't just look at a dog in passing and turn into it. As easy as that would be."
As he leaned forward, their eyes locked, and he had to smile. He didn't know what it was about her, but it was nice that they actually had chemistry.

"I like the way you think," he commented slyly, his genuine grin becoming laced with a more sly, cunning one. "Yeah, I only get the form, so it can't be missing any limbs or anything like that, but if it's sick, I'll be fine. Really though, it's not like we're cheating. You know, I'd still have to be on the top of my game, but I think I can handle it."
He looked her over as she leaned back against the counter. "I wouldn't object to that either, that's for sure," he murmured, his voice almost a purr. He sat at the table, the gears in his brain turning as he thought. "So in the next few days, I guess I'm going dog-shopping. It's been quite some time since I got a new form, so...should be interesting." He propped his head on his hands, looking up at her.

He smiled, but this one wasn't the mischievous, catty grin he'd been sporting most of the night. Not that those weren't genuine, but there was something more heartfelt behind this one. He was glad she showed a more lasting interest in him. "I'll make sure to hang onto this, then," he said with a wink. He definitely planned on calling her back, gig or no gig.
And then, out of nowhere, she was helping him with a scheme. Technically there wasn't anything illegal about it, so he would opt not to tell her about his extra-curricular ways of making money. "Actually, that's not a bad idea. I'd just have to find an appropriate greyhound, preferably one that I won't have to race. I mean, it'd be weird if two identical dogs raced, right? Though it's not illegal, I'm pretty sure die-hard race fans would frown upon it, so...best not to draw suspicion." He finished his second cup of coffee, and put the mug in the sink next to him.
"Though, what would you get in return? I can't let ya do it for free, after all."

"I know. I mean, I've made ends meet in worse times than this, but ya know. Play the hand you're dealt and all that happy bull****," he said with a light chuckle. "Oh, yeah. I'll be right back." He finished his coffee and went into the living room, looking for a paper and pen, but to no avail. So he checked the bedroom, finally coming across a pen and a notebook.
He handed her the pen and notebook before pouring another cup of coffee. "There should be a blank page in there." The notebook he'd handed her was mostly songs he'd scribbled the lyrics and notation to.
"Actually...I used to run track, so...doing it as a dog might be a pretty good setup if I can find a way in. And if I'm still any good, heh." He smirked.

Til they can find his owner; that's what they always said, no matter what shift he used. But like always, he'd be gone and they'd be none the wiser. And usually, a little bit poorer. He was smirking on the inside, as things started to be looking up for him.
Jay let out a happy bark in response, snuggling up to the woman some more. He just hoped there was something he'd get out of this, besides another story he'd have no one to tell. He stopped squirming, relaxing in the woman's arms and letting his tongue loll lazily out of his mouth.
