The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Pippa’s quippy attitude was, at the very least, consistent in a crisis. Keeping calm heads would be easier if they kept things normal, and Pippa giving her a hard time was normal. They had to keep their feet under them, and with Pippa wobbling in the aftereffects of her power, Sabine placed a hand around Pippa’s shoulder as an offer to steady her.
Thanks to Pippa, they were finally solution focused. Sabine watched as Pippa found the requested pin and pulled it away, letting her hair fall free. Her blonde hair was very pretty falling in waves like that. For the record.
Sabine took the pin and got to work on the lock, not wanting to wait for someone to come check on them. ”The hair pin thing can work on some locks. I’m mostly banking on experience, which is mostly the one time my roommate locked us out of our dorm room.” Her roommate accused her of moonlighting as a cat burglar after that.
”I’m pretty sure in a dress like this, I would have had difficulty hiding a weapon they wouldn’t find. What, do you think I’d have a knife hidden in my heel?” Sabine paused, before adding, ”That actually wouldn’t be a bad idea.”
Click.
Sabine smiled, slowly pulling open the door to minimize noise. ”We can accessorize for future parties later. Are you feeling up for our escape?”

Up until this point, all Sabine knew about Pippa's power was that it would not be a hazard to the people around her. In the interest of working with Svetlana in good faith, Sabine did not press the issue or ask for more details beyond that. Now that the mutation was coming up, she watched Pippa's silhouette attentively.
There was nothing visible, even as her eyes started slowly adapting to the darkness, but something clearly happened to bother Pippa. That short moment gave her the age of the ship? "Don't push yourself if this is gonna hurt you. I don't want to be a terrible boss, after all." Not that she had much hope of that, given the kidnapping.
Pippa was confident enough to try again. This was an old, decommissioned ship, possibly from the navy. Evidently, Pippa was some kind of psychic. If Sabine remembered her classifications correctly, this seemed like psychometry. "Well, looking on the bright side, I doubt they could get a decommissioned government ship too far out into the water." It would have been nice to know who they was dealing with, but mutations had limitations and she could work with imperfect information.
Feeling around the door, Sabine did her best to "read" it in her own, more mundane way. "Doesn't look like any effort was made to update security from the olden days. I feel a keyhole. It's not exactly my expertise, but I could possibly pick the lock if I had something to fiddle with the lock."

Sabine wondered if her situation would be much better if she had been kidnapped with another agent. Pippa was pleasant and witty but that did not correlate to escaping a hostage situation. Training could help, but more importantly, they had to be on the same page. Trust had to be there. Considering most of her agents could be working against her, maybe Pippa was somehow the better option.
Pippa was not causing a problem, which was enough for Sabine while she struggled to piece together answers. The agent was not expecting much from her captivity partner, so she needed a second to process what Pippa was offering. "Wha? Oh! Is this related to..." Sabine was trying not to be rude, which was probably unnecessary given the circumstances. If Pippa was hoping to help, Sabine had to guess it was tied to her mutation.
Trust was key. Sabine moved out of the way of the door. "Go right ahead. Get us out of here and I'll pick up your asprin myself."

Sabine did what she could to guide Pippa in the dark, so the rest was up to Pippa's quick learning abilities. The first effort sounded unsuccessful, which was not surprising. The skill was not easy to learn, for as easy as it sounded. Sabine was surprised by the success on the second attempt. "Hey, at least you've got your hands now, Miss Quick Study." Some agents struggled with that lesson because they wanted to brute force their way free without thinking about the physics of what they were doing.
Stretching her arms and rolling her neck in an effort to limber up for whatever came next, Sabine thought about... well, what did come next. "So we need to figure out if there's a way out of here before anything." She hoped they were not dropped in from above, because they clearly lacked the height necessary to get to the ceiling.
Fortunately, after feeling around, Sabine noticed a door. "Well, aces. We've got a door. A locked one, but again: little victories. I doubt we're on this ship alone. It'd be helpful if we knew what we were dealing with. If there's a guard, how many, who we're dealing with here. I don't feel like calling attention to us until I know that won't summon a dozen guards." Unfortunately, information gathering was easier said than done. "Dammit, I wish there was an easier way to find clues in this dark."

Most people underestimated Sabine's physical ability at a glance. Despite not being overly buff, she was plenty fit and more than strong enough to lift someone like Pippa. She had to deal with her bound wrists, but Pippa barely crested five feet. It made her easy to lift, but Sabine had to put extra effort to just lift Pippa far enough to peek through the opening.
They were on water, they were stationary, and there was nothing in sight. That last part was not ideal; if they were really lucky, they might just not be on a land-facing side of the ship. More realistically, they were anchored out deeper on the water. Not. Great. But also not underwater. "Okay. Okay. We're gonna figure this out." Admittedly, she needed to reassure herself a little, but she wanted Pippa staying calm. Pippa was here because of her, so Sabine was going to figure out a way to keep her safe. "Let's get you back down."
Sabine wrapped her arms around Pippa's legs so she could slowly lower her back down. It was a very close experience and Pippa's... figure made things a tight squeeze, but that was better than dropping her. "Alright. First thing's first; I'm not running around this ship with my hands tied. Thankfully, I think we're dealing with zip ties here. So with the right kind of pressure, I should be able to..." After tightening the tie with her teeth, she used leverage as she was trained. She pulled her wrists out and up and slammed her knee between them. Sabine winced, but the tough plastic snapped.
Rubbing her wrists, she looked over at the vague direction of Pippa. "I'm guessing they didn't prep you on how to escape bindings in Public Relations training?" Finding her way behind Pippa, holding her wrists so she could tighten Pippa's bindings. "Sorry. It's gotta be tight to work. Lift your hands over your head then bring them down into your knee or stomach. Flare out your elbows," her hands repositioned Pippa as an example before moving back to her shoulders, "and pull your shoulders back like you're trying to touch shoulderblades. If you do this fast enough and apply enough stress, it should snap."
She smiled, for all the good that did in the dark. "One little victory, then we can figure this out together from there, okay?"

The closer they could get to understanding their situation, the better chance they had of living through this. ”Us not being dead is a good start, admittedly,” she mumbled to herself. Realistically, if the plan here was to kill them, they would have been killed during their nap. That was, of course, unless they were being made an example of. Best case scenario, they might be hostages.
Training told her not to depend on the best case scenario. Focus on solutions. They were, as far as she could tell, on water. They were targeted, either as SUPER or as internal enemies of SUPER; either way, not grand.
Their wits were starting to return, which was great when their lives depended on being witty. Pippa was the first to notice a glimpse of light in the darkness. Looking around, Sabine noticed the weak silvery light peeking overhead. ”Yeah, I think it’s up there. And… you probably can’t see where I’m pointing.” Feeling around, Sabine eventually tapped Pippa’s arm and moved to her hand, taking it to point it toward the opening overhead.
”I’m no sailor, but I think it’s a porthole or something.” Sabine found a nearby wall to lean against and made a basket of her hands. ”It’s not too far up; I might be able to boost you up to take a look.”
Dealing with Betsy Button was the greatest load off Sabine’s shoulders. Between the bad press and people in her life suddenly losing a decade, that young old woman made herself a constant frustrating presence. If they had left her along any longer, Sabine would not have been surprised to wake up back in her Theater major days.
Amelia being de-aged seemed fortunately temporary, as opposed to Gage and Hunter. Small blessings. ”Interesting place to get cornered.” She wondered why Button did not gas the whole Mansion, given her agenda. From what Sabine understood, she imagined the Mansion defenses earned their value warding against intrusion.
Feeling patient and pacified by coffee, Sabine watched and gave Amelia time to collect her thoughts. They were in no rush; her next meeting was with Pippa in an hour, and in a worst case scenario, the PR rep could deal with Sabine being fashionably late.
According to Amelia, she was at the Mansion reaching out to the X-Man, Rebecca Grey. Codename Valkyrie, formerly Lodestone. Sabine studied up on the X-Men of this world, understanding they were inevitable. Curious, that Amelia would have a connection to Rebecca or the X-Men. ”Oh? Do tell.” Sabine folded her arms on the table and leaned in, keeping an ever-present smile. ”I’ll admit, I’ve been keen on having a stronger working relationship with the Xes, and a liaison would help there. But first, I’m quite curious; could you elaborate on this history with their team? I would need to trust anyone I put in a position like that, and trust starts with full disclosure. So… disclose.”

Pippa was in a bad mood, which was justifiable. No one liked being robbed of agency, and there was little agency in being a hostage or whatever they were here for. ”I’ll be fine. Heaven forbid I try lending a hand,” she muttered, bending to get her wrists under her so she could twist and get her arms in front of her. She was no gymnast, but after enough effort and conditioning, she was flexible enough to re-orient herself in short order.
They both had their suspicions, and while Sabine questioned Pippa’s concerns, she was not going to outright dismiss them. They both knew there were still some goons lurking in SUPER. ”Have you done something to tip your hand already?” She smirked while the world around her slowly shifted into silhouettes. She was finally adapting to the dark. ”I know you aren’t a trained spy, but that’s still quite fast.”
Pippa exclaimed before Sabine could offer a counter-explanation, and they both picked up on the results. ”An echo… well, that makes it way less likely we’re about to suffocate.” Sabine fumbled to her feet, trying to get a feel for the space they were in, when she noticed an uneasiness. At first, she thought it was the aftereffects of being drugged, but she was starting to believe the shifting and movement she felt was from the floor itself. ”Pippa… I think we’re moving. I think… we might be on the water?”

If Sabine had a say, she would have loved to be kidnapped in a more practical outfit. Dresses were great for looking flashy in a fight, but pants would have been much more convenient in an escape.
”I pretended fine when talking to anyone. You already know I didn’t want to be there, so why would I pretend around you?” The metallic thump caught Sabine off guard. ”You need help over there with something?”
The way Pippa brought up SUPER made Sabine defensive, because she was aware of the Havenite’s opinions. ”It’s not how I would have done it, but I can’t speak to some of the people SUPER’s employed over the years. It is a calculated plan with a lot of groundwork. If they’re targeting me as a face of SUPER, I’ve seen a few activist groups who lean into the extreme. One of them could have the organization and tools to get something like this done.” And the motive, given the admittedly justified picture of SUPER some pro-mutant groups held.

SUPER trained agents for various situations, and she heard plenty of her more junior agents complaining. When would they need to deal with being kidnapped and waking up in an unknown location? They assumed they were more the kidnappers than the kidnappees. Sabine, thankfully, was a good student and, with her luck, was always going to end up in a place like this eventually.
She did feel bad having Pippa dragged into this, though. She was a PR person; this is not what she signed up for, regardless of the “I know what I’m getting myself int” shpeal from their first meeting. Sabine wanted to keep Pippa from freaking out, for both their sakes.
Pippa was maneuvering, but Sabine still could not make her out just yet. ”Most of it is a blur,” she admitted. ”We had just left the event. You were giving me grief for not being genuine.” That was ironic to Sabine, considering the whole point of socializing to her was reflecting a person’s personality and energy back at them. Inherently ungenuine.
”We did make it to the car, but… I don’t think I remember the car starting. They probably knocked us out when we got in the car. Gas, maybe, or needles in the seats.” Sabine sighed, but cut it quick when she thought about flooding a possibly enclosed space with carbon dioxide. ”I think we got ambushed. They probably got to the driver, then waited for us where they knew we’d go.”

Personnel management had been a unique challenge in recent months.
Wait, maybe not unique. Exhausting. That was the word. Sabine was shuffling around possible problem agents, handling de-aged mutants, and dealing with Pippa. She was, in and of herself, a change to her routine.
Agents Hunter and Gage were evidently de-aged with the concentrated dose of the serum, so the antidotes SUPER made available to the public unfortunately had no effect on the pair. They were handling the change well, which made sense; they had no memories of the lives they led the first time.
That situation was not the case for another de-aged agent who made a surprise return in her all-grown-up form. Amelia was back on the map and, as one of the mutants known to the rest of SUPER, Sabine was glad she was the first one Amelia reached out to.
Sabine had Amelia join her in her own office, knowing for certain her space was not bugged. She even, in an effort to be more welcoming to people around her, brought coffee along with her initial pleasantries. Both women could tell they were getting ready to get into the real meat of the conversation.
So why not jump into it? ”So it’s obviously ben a while since your last report. You said you were looking to talk, so I’m listening.”

Sabine liked being in control. When she took orders, she accepted them and generally had the authority to handle things her way. Surprises were unwelcome, so she worked to put her in positions where she was conscious of herself and her surroundings. Some people might call her paranoid, but she was still alive and in her prime when more reckless agents caught their own consequences.
Which is why it was so infuriating to wake up, groggy, sore, and unsure of where she ended up.
The situation came into clarity in slow waves. Pippa’s voice was the first thing she heard, shouting, waking her from unconsciousness. She was on some hard flooring; cold, uncomfortable, probably metal. That made sense; if she was knocked unconscious, someone would want to secure her. This ruled out being buried in a coffin, which was nice.
With effort, Sabine tried to right herself, realizing with annoyance that her hands were bound behind her back. That was what she expected, but she did not have to like it. Her eyes were still blurry and struggling to adjust to the darkness. The shouting was only a few feet away, so Pippa was in the same position and likely in the same space. ”Ugh, I don’t think shouting is going to do much,” she groaned, trying to shuffle over.
She felt some part of Pippa against her arm, which confirmed that they thankfully were not in separate cages or something. Little victories. ”If we’re somewhere with limited oxygen, we shouldn’t waste it calling for help. I doubt we’re anywhere someone would hear us.” Not if the people who did this were at all competent. ”Fuck, I wish we had caught a look at who grabbed us. That’s the last time I listen to ‘don’t be so uptight. Relax for once.’ Relax once, get abducted. Typical.”

Sabine did suggest that Sveta should send the equivalent of a spy to suss out troublesome elements of SUPER. She could not be surprised by Pippa's self-proclaimed knack for uncovering secrets. "Well, that's what I was hoping for, so search away. You're in a government intelligence agency; plenty of secrets to find." Did Sabine have secrets worth protecting? If she did, was she ashamed of them? If Pippa was as good as she claimed, only time would tell.
"I have secured an office for you to work in. Given the nature of your status, I want some comfort and privacy afforded to you." It would be best for Pippa to interact with the general population of SUPER on her own terms. "I can walk you over there now or you can follow the signs toward the HR wing nearby. Otherwise, I think you can get settled for now unless you have any last burning questions for me?" They would be spending plenty of time together soon enough anyway.

Despite the apprehension of all parties involved, Pippa could offer something useful to SUPER. This was the right choice if Haven and SUPER wanted the practice of mutant policing to be done in a more civil way. There were many steps to take in achieving that goal, and altering the perception of SUPER mattered. The public needed to know SUPER was willing to be more human (so to speak) with noble intentions. It was not just self-serving; it would make recruitment better. In an ideal world, there would be an influx in mutants and disinterest from the human supremacists SUPER once catered to.
Pippa was not a permanent SUPER employee, but she was evidently a mutant in a position to make positive changes. Sabine smiled, folding her arms across her desk. "Of course. I assumed. Bit of a shame; it would be a very nice face to put out there," she suggested, with the slightest hint of playfulness. Nothing HR would shake a stick at. "But I want your opinions and feedback. Not just for our public face."
They had to acknowledge the potential issues Pippa might face until things got better. "I'm not making your mutant status public, but some older agents might recognize your face. Make assumptions. If anyone gives you trouble, mutant-related or otherwise, bring that to me. I'm not going to tolerate it. I will not let bad apples continue to spoil the bushel. If I truly want to change the system and the culture here, there can be no place for that."
After working with a government agency that tried running like a serious, well-oiled (if brutal) machine, there was something awe-inspiring about listening to the X-Men work. They were competent, adaptive, and cavalierly casual in the face of madness. They were unorthodox, and in a way, it made them a good team to throw at unorthodox threats.
Time would tell, but for now, that was shaping up to be a good decision on her part. Now she had to survive to review this potential partnership in the aftermath.
Gage took the lead, not because of rank, expendability, or experience, but because she was inoculated against the de-aging serum. If a syringe came from the shadows or a gas cloud hit them, Sabine needed to stay back. She was of no use to SUPER as a confused teenager.
Despite being newer to tactical field training than Agent Hunter, Gage had good instincts, keeping them out of the fray, and when a potential threat came by, she did not take risks. Sabine wondered if the X-Men would gripe about tasing first, but not everyone could sweep in with invulnerability or ice powers.
They made their way up the escalator; a necessary evil. It was not the ideal cover, and it showed when they reached the top and the top of the escalator was burned out from under them. Acid ate away at the escalator quickly. They had to act quickly or the escalator would likely fall apart and drop them to ground level.
Following the curve of the acidic attack, Sabine spotted a young man whose throat was bulging, growing as it filled with more acid. They had to act fast and the X-Men had their own mutants to worry about.
”Forward! Flash on, flash on!” Sabine grabbed a cylinder hooked on her belt and leapt over the gap in the elevator. She could take a shot with a non-lethal round, but that throat bulge was large and the skin appeared stretched thin. A bullet would likely pierce it, and she did not want to cause serious harm to the young man or pop an acid balloon.
Instead, she attached the strobe attachment to her firearm, pointing it at the target. A bright light flashed sporadically, giving them a window where the acidic boy was disoriented. Sabine kept the light on him and moved toward their goal. There was no time to waste, so she had to give Noel a chance to get behind him.
