The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Sabine was rarely accused of being a showoff, but that was because she rarely gave people cause to think she had money. Her suits were fashionable and tailored, but she was a high-ranking government official; people expected that. The rest of her life was frugal and mundane. Sabine was not showy, but she let her balcony view be her one indulgence. Most people had no clue about her private refuge up there, but Pippa knew now and could tease her for it.
Unlike Sabine, Pippa was great at taking compliments, letting her confidence and charisma carry her. "And I'm the showoff. Though it's good; pretty women should be allowed to know it and own it." And Pippa owned it.
The opening traditions, like the anthem and the opening pitch were quickly out of the way and the game was starting properly. Sabine, for once, looked carefree. "I'll tastefully watch and clap. Unless there's a home run. If we hit a home run, I will probably jump and cheer and you will pretend you saw nothing when today is all over."
Sabine watched the battle between a pitcher and a stubborn hitter, but the scene as growing darker. Odd; was there an overcast forecast today? She could have sworn she saw bright and sunny, but the light in the stadium kept growing dimmer...

Ever since the battleship, Sabine made a habit of keeping Pippa close by. They never got confirmation who the target of that night's attack was, so if it turned out to be Pippa, Sabine felt the need to keep her safe from any new attempts on the peppy blonde's life. Pippa, to her credit, did not make it hard to keep her around, pushing her concern about Sabine's public image. A public image, for the record, Sabine historically cared very little about.
But at least this time, when Pippa suggested her newest plan, it involved a Yankees game. There were worst ways to be dragged to a PR event.
Except it wasn't even a PR event. According to Pippa, the whole point was to make this seem normal and relatable. Sabine did her part by wearing a jersey--one that fit her snugly, rather than loosely. Apparently Pippa was not above using Sabine's looks to their advantage. With that reasoning in mind, Sabine did her part by picking out shorts that she forgot she owned and offered up plenty of her best feature: her legs.
"I am acting natural," she quipped, being caught looking around. "Or I will be. You've managed to drag me to a place I'm actually excited to spend the day enjoying. Even if I could have caught this game from my balcony." A very specific reason Sabine got her apartment and paid extra each month for the luxury.
Looking over Pippa, Sabine grinned. "Speaking of acting natural, you look way too pretty for a Yankees game, you know."

There was such a rush to get out of the claustrophobic interior of the ship, everything else was an afterthought. If they could not find their way out of the ship, why worry about what came next when they would just be dead. In a crisis, the easiest way to tackle tasks was by prioritizing the thing in front of you.
Now that they were in the fresh air, Sabine could free up some processing power for a new set of challenges. They could breathe, she could think, and their goal was visible, if not far, far in the distance. They were not safe by a long shot, but Sabine could take control of the situation.
Seeing their redemption so far out of reach was getting to Pippa, but that was fair. She was being confronted, not for the first time that night, with how likely it was she might die. Sabine was already opening doors and looking through drawers. Ignoring the pressing panic, she found her smile and did what she could to ease Pippa's nerves. "We find the way out. You've gotten us this far." Sabine found a silver survival blanket in a drawer and tossed it to the other woman, who looked soaked to the bone already. "I'll get us home. Trust me."
It was easy to make promises when failing to keep it would mean they were both dead anyway.
It took time to get to the front of the ship, but Sabine found the bridge. She was not going to delude herself into steering a sinking ship, but if she was lucky...
A radio. A radio! Maybe it was already out of commission, but it was worth a shot. "Mayday, mayday, is anyone reading? Mayday, mayday!"
There was a long pause as Sabine held her breath. Finally, static rose to life from the radio. "How did you get on this channel? Who is this?"
"This is Senior Agent of SUPER, Sabine Sang." She had to hope whoever was on the radio was not part of the plot, but if they were, why would they be asking who she was? "We were left on a battleship off the coast of New York City being sunk to create an artificial reef."
A pause. "...really?"
Sabine did her best to explain as quickly as she could how they got on the ship and where they were. The man was familiar with the ship being decommissioned and sank. Fortunately for her, he claimed to be part of the Coast Guard. Sabine ran back to Pippa, doing her best not to shiver in the cold of the sea air. She peaked over the side along the way, confirming that their time was dwindling. "Good news! The coast guard is sending a hellicoptor." Assuming the guy she spoke to was legit and not part of the trap. Once again, she could only hope, and either way, she needed a plan B.
"Bad news is I'm not confident they get here before the ship is under the waves. I checked the manifesto while I was on the bridge, and there should be a storage area with life boats near the stern." Sabine saw the light at the end of the tunnel, but she needed Pippa to see that, too. Without giving it much thought, she moved some of the hair plastered to Pippa's face away so she could meet her eyes. They were going to live. They had to believe that. "Let's get to the back of the ship and find ourselves a lifeline."

With enough trouble on their plates, Pippa went along with Sabine grabbing her hand. If they wanted time to bicker, it would come when they were ideally on the shoreline, far from a sinking battleship.
Whoever was responsible for their situation, they were smart. This was the kind of assassination attempt you put months of planning, coordinating, and problem-solving into. Even Pippa could not help but acknowledge the plan, and Sabine had to agree. ”Devious and brilliant. If I wasn’t so annoyed about the attempt on my life, I’d probably be impressed with the creative vision.”
Of course, with a brilliant plan meant to kill them, Sabine could see the signs of fear on Pippa’s face. She had to give it to the PR specialist; she took that fear, shoved it down, and kept running. Attagirl. They made it to an intersection and without a word, Pippa extended a hand to read a wall. Understanding what to expect, Sabine helped keep her steady for the shorter vision.
The mutation kept coming in clutch, offering a direction. That was promising, because their steps were splashing in a thin layer of water that was rising. The ship was taking on water, and they were racing the ocean’s ability to fill a battleship from the bottom up. Nothing to gain from thinking about that; they would press forward in Pippa’s direction.
The water was reaching their ankles when the vision bore fruit: a metal staircase. In any other situation, she would have been ready for guards or captors, but Sabine doubted they would find anyone. If their captors had people so loyal to the cause of killing them, they would stand guard on a sinking ship, they were metaphorically and literally dead in the water.
The pair made it to the deck, instantly getting misted by the salty ocean air. Fresh air was a huge upgrade and Sabine gulped a breath down, feeling her head clear. Okay, their odds of surviving were higher, but still not great. She ran to the railing, seeing nothing but ocean. Tense, she ran to the other side of the ship.
This time, blessedly, she did see the shore. Great. It was also… very far. ”Any chance you used to be a swim team champion and left it off your resume?” Sabine was physically fit, but these were still the waters of the Atlantic. It could still sweep them away if they were not careful, but swimming might still be their only option unless something better turned up in the limited window they had before the ship was under the waves.

People assumed Sabine was cold and detached. They were not wrong, but most people knew her as a professional with a mission. Staying on task was easier when she focused on the job and agents of SUPER did not need her to baby them. They signed up for risks. Pippa was not an Agent. She was handling things better than any civilian Sabine knew, but she deserved to feel safe. That was the mission tonight.
Letting Pippa’s accusation slide, Sabine watched the woman go into her trance-like state to read the ship, prepared to pull her out of it should the trip go bad. Eventually, Pippa came out of her reading with ominous shock.
The shipped was rigged. ”To explode? That is an insane thing to just set up off the coast of a—“ Sure, setting off a surprise explosion at sea near New York would be impossible to hide and hard to explain, unless it was already planned.
First thing was first, they had to move. No sense standing around thinking when the ship was actually exploding and sinking. Sabine grabbed Pippa by the gloved hand and ran toward anywhere that was not their storage cell. ”An artificial reef. I bet this ship was just consigned to be sunk to form an artificial reef,” she suggested as they took a turn. ”I sort of saw a documentary about it. I bet they snuck us on here knowing that was scheduled for tonight.”
They came to a T-intersection. Sabine could not see a sign toward whether left or right was the way up and out.
Psychics freaked people out. They freaked Sabine out. They were also thankfully rare, and SUPER was less dubious morally in how they used them these days. Ami was not being required to comply with an inspection, but if she wanted to stay with SUPER, it sounded like an appropriate requirement. Ami might be earnest, but if she was a spy, Sabine would lose her job for not doing her due diligence.
Because heaven forbid Sabine invite spies into SUPER.
Assuming everything was on the up and up, Amelia would be put on probation, though the younger woman seemed to think that would restrict her more than it did. ”You can still serve as liaison to the X-Men, Mellitus. As an agent in probation status, I’ll still be working you as normal; we can still use more hands on deck. You’ll be working alongside designated partners in the field. Agents I can trust,” she clarified. ”Once you’re back on that level, you’ll be given more free reign. So yes, I’m sorry, but you’re basically getting chaperones for a bit.”
Sabine stood from her seat, offering Amelia a hand. ”So psychics, psyche evals, and a more senior agent to hold your hand while you are doing your job. If you can deal with all that for the time being… welcome back to SUPER, Agent Mellitus.”

Carrick had to deal with one of Sabine’s greatest fears: a power he did not fully control. Sabine spent her teenage years and, honestly, most of the years after that fearful of a manifesting a power she could not handle.
“Best behavior would be not ditching your tracker, for the record,” Sabine interjected following Pippa’s own correction, but her tone was less stern. Carrick carried himself with casual swagger, even if he was learning when to bite his tongue and listen. She mirrored his energy, which came with a hint of smugness. If he hid behind relaxed confidence, meet it in kind.
Sabine bit back a response to being called the muscle. He was not wrong. Pippa was not wrong either, but she may have overreached. ”Something like that,” she muttered. ”There are plenty of people over my head, but I’m the Senior Agent handling Personnel Management and Training. More title than I’m a fan of, but I want to use this to help mutants in our custody.”
Carrick was curious what SUPER intended to do with him and what the two women were planning. Sabine looked to Pippa, hoping Sabine’s decision was in line with what she would approve of. Sabine did not want to strain SUPER’s relationship with Haven, or her working relationship with the PR Specialist. Especially when it gave them access to Haven resources. ”R&D has been working with psychology and behavioral specialists in hopes of developing training exercises meant to help mutants work on controlling aspects of their powers tied to mental blocks, inexperience, or in your case, clashing personality.” Less controversial than split personalities, which it sounded like Carrick was describing.
”A local organization we have a working relationship with, Haven, has a simulation environment called CLASS that we can likely request access to use for training.” Sveta might even approve of a request like that, and using Haven resources should get approved by the higher ups if Sabine spoke to the right people. ”We can work with you in an environment where you can experiment with your powers without risk to anyone.”
There was, of course, an administrative detail they had to address. ”To approve this, you would be reclassed as a SUPER Asset rather than a Mutant In Custody. SUPER identifies potential talents to invest in as potential future assets. This is a non-binding role; you would not be an Agent. You may choose to never be an agent once your custody period passes. But appointing you as an Asset does let me request what I need to help you.”
Sabine leaned forward in her seat, meeting eye to eye with the young man. ”It’s up to you. But we want to help.”
There was dedication to a job, then there was real passion. A great PR person might respond to a potential scene like Carrick, but Pippa handled the situation with empathy. She could have been an efficient problem-solver, but she made the effort to care. Agents were not always lucky enough to get that side of Pippa, but she looked out for her fellow mutants.
Carrick may have masked his concerns with flashy gestures, but Sabine did get the sense he knew how poorly his night could have gone. If the senior agent had not believed that, she might have leaned into him further, but there was no need to put the Fear of God into a kid who was receptive, openly or otherwise.
That meant slack for Pippa, the softer side of their duo in Sabine’s opinion. It was not the typical SUPER technique, but the young man opened up about the pains of his mutation and the personalities he dealt with. Some mutations were like that; a mutation that manifested some secondary identity. The concept was dangerous, because it meant variable control. (When Sabine made a personality, it was temporary and under her control, so that was different.)
The conversation would loop back to that. Pippa brought them to the crux of the conversation. ”She’s right, and as much as I’m sure you get a kick out of losing tails, but you’re only handcuffing us, kid.” Sabine took a deep breath and an accompanying sigh. ”We don’t want this to feel like house arrest; we want to trust you so you can trust us.” Carrick was not the only one in his position, but for young mutants like him, SUPER had a chance to find a better way. Guidance and support over control.
Sabine thought back to the aspects of Carrick’s mutation. ”We want you to feel free and safe. The more you’re willing to work with us instead of against us, we can work with you. There are ways for you to control what you can do better. We’d be glad to help you find them.” If you could stop being a brat for five minutes.

Back in her home universe, SUPER had a habit of controlling narratives and stomping out dissent. This did not always come by violent means; the government was on the side of SUPER, media was somehow even more corrupt than the media of the MROverse, and anti-mutant sentiment still ran high in the general public. Despite all that, you could not control all corners of a populace, and SUPER justifiably had opposition groups speaking out against their efforts.
Among the rebels and activist groups, X-quality gave higher ups headaches. Impassioned “human first” agents held strong opinions over the group that kept framing them as the villains they were. Amongst their ranks was Pippa Swan, according to reports, and agents were on the lookout to bring her in for questioning before the rift between world shifted priorities.
Sabine knew hiring Pippa would raise red flags with some of the old guard of SUPER. Sabine never knew the Pippa of her world, and while suspicions were natural, Pippa had not misstepped or given her reason to ask further into the possibilities. Whether or not… well, whoever she was, she shared a name with a pro-mutant radical. Could that be part of what tossed them on this ship?
The why of their abduction would have to wait, as the whole ship moved uneasily following a powerful series of noises on a lower floor. A knot tied in Sabine’s stomach as she considered possibilities. They could just run—but what if that put them further into danger?
Begrudgingly, Pippa was willing to probe for more information. Steeling herself to keep from shaking, she rested a reassuring, steady hand on Pippa’s shoulder. ”Only if you are up for it. You’ve got this; any insight and we’ll figure out the quickest way to safety, Pippa. I promise.”
There was something about a young man with an Irish brogue that made someone sound mischievous. Sabine should address that bias, but it was hard when Carrick found ways to live up to those expectations.
Watching the griffon-shifter, Sabine’s gaze fixed on the young man as he played at not knowing he was the center of attention. His mutation, while a danger when left unchecked, made Carrick very expressive. He clearly felt the weight of her tone with his wings drooping before he mustered up that trademark bravado.
The Circus was a unique answer, and the story made sense on paper. They might even be able to verify some of it if he was not talking out of his ass. Sabine said nothing at him judging his own behavior, but she may have cracked a smirk at Pippa repeating it as an accusation. This job was easier to smile about with her around, at least.
The smiling stopped when Carrick explained waking up in a cage with blood. She did not interrupt or jump to conclusions, but Sabine knew they had systems in place for a reason and this turn of events only affirmed why they had the anklet on him in the first place. She considered whether he ended up caged after another outburst, but the look in Pippa’s eyes made her reconsider the situation. Kidnappings and mutant abductions were running rampant lately; what better group to sneak people in and out of cities than a circus?
A circus with mind control was the answer, evidently. That sent a chill up Sabine’s spine when Pippa repeated the words. Her lips pressed tightly as she considered the situation. ”Yeah,” she muttered, leaning closer to speak specifically to Pippa. ”We’ll get more info on that and send investigators.” She had an idea of the trouble Pippa was already envisioning and they were on the same page. That would be addressed ASAP, but Carrick’s story did continue.
Carrick may have saved the day, but he got himself so far in over his head, he was lucky to get out at all. ”Pippa is right.” Most people were addressed by titles or last names, but it made more sense to call Pippa by her first name. ”Asking forgiveness could end with you in a cell—an actual one. It also means we couldn’t send backup when things go south unexpectedly. Which they did.” Her tone was stern, but not cold.
Finally softening, Sabine let Pippa take the lead in making sure Carrick was okay. ”It does sound like you’ve been through a lot.”

As expected, Pippa was not harboring a secret surname tied to wealth and power. If there was a time to give up a secret like that, it was on a creepy kidnapper ship. It was most likely their antagonists were targeting Sabine, given her standing and the variety of enemies she amassed over her time in this universe.
Still… Sabine did consider the other Pippa. This gentle public relations expert might not have enemies, but maybe she got caught in the crossfire. ”No rich family, got it. Say, by any chance, has anyone ever briefed you on your counterpart? From my universe?”
Before they could proceed, that clanking sound surprised Sabine. Were they… hitting something? Fixing it? An old ship like this probably made plenty of weird sounds, she guessed, but something felt off. That only concerned her more when it was brought to her attention how odd it was that they still had not crossed a guard. Sabine was alert, but nothing was popping out of a corner to surprise them. Hell, she did not even hear the sounds of footsteps or guards idly chatting.
Why would they leave them on a ship unguarded? Unless…
There was a thunderous boom from somewhere in the ship, followed by the creaky rending of metal. The whole ship rumbled, nearly knocking Sabine into the nearby wall. ”We’re hit? Wait.” That made no sense. What on earth would be attacking a ship like this?

It was not the function they wanted to advertise frequently, but SUPER did still take and hold mutants when they were a threat to themselves and others. Thankfully, unlike the old days, the process involved less mad science and more guidance and protection. Some mutants, like Sabine’s mother, were well-meaning but inherently dangerous. Instead of punishing them for that, SUPER was trying to offer training or technology that could help them thrive while keeping people around them safe.
Each mutant in voluntary custody was different; some were reluctant and others were surprisingly thankful. That last part was validating. And then, of course, there were troublemakers. Sabine empathized with Xavier’s Mansion, because if they had a whole building full of Carricks, they must all be exhausted.
It was late, and Sabine had been looking forward to sitting on her balcony with a book and a beer. Unfortunately, Pippa came to her office, catching her just before she could slip her coat on. ”Bad look bringing him in the front? Noted.” Sabine was not going to question Pippa’s advice; she was past fighting helpful suggestions. Even if the Headquarters was on an island, they were not off the grid and people who wanted to snoop could still likely see the front gates.
Carrick was brought before them and he quickly struck up a conversation with Pippa. Always Pippa. It was fair; she was the friendlier face, Sabine would gladly admit. She could also hold her own against a rambunctious, rebellious teen, which is clearly what they were dealing with. Sabine did not think Carrick was inherently malicious, but she expected his attitude and lack of respect for authority to make him a challenge.
Sabine’s lips remained in a smirk, feeling like a principal dealing with a frequent offender. Pippa was the good cop, clearly. Sabine brandished a custom key and unlocked Carrick’s cuffs. ”If you paid attention to your briefing, I hope you understand your anklet is a good faith gesture. We’re trusting you to go where you want, with an appropriate heads-up. You’re good faith gesture is to work with us, considering what happened last time you took a stroll in the park.”
Sabine hooked the cuffs to the back of her belt and sighed. ”Care to give us an explanation for why you decided to run off without reporting in?”

How would some of her more macho agents handle being told to learn how to use a hairpin in an escape situation? Some would scoff. Michael would probably be fine, of course. The best agents Sabine worked with thought outside the box, and the ones she did not trust were rigid. Sabine was accused of being cold or frigid, but she was anything but when she was under pressure.
They made their way out of their holding cell, which was a start. Sabine took the lead, but made certain to keep Pippa close as they walked the halls. She had half a mind to take the woman’s hand in case someone tried to grab her from behind.
The spy kept her voice hushed. ”Realistically? Either a ransom or someone plans to make an example of us. Maybe mutant extremists mad at SUPER’s past. Maybe human extremists mad at SUPER’s new direction. Maybe you’re keeping some big secret that makes you a valuable target? You’re not a secret heiress, right?” That would be her luck.
Sabine handled everything from interviews to interrogations in her time with SUPER, so if Amelia was looking to judge how things were going, she would have to look elsewhere. Sabine was a mirror, but at a moment like this, the reflection went blank. The goal here was not to make Amelia comfortable; it was to find answers and determine her fate.
If Amelia was looking to lie, she might have suggested the former Agent persona held more control, or at least maintained a presence. This was the Amelia of the MROverse, of that, Sabine was confident. There was no benefit to her own agent to lie about that unless she was looking for a way out, which was not the pretense of the meeting.
Through it all, Sabine kept in the forefront of her mind what kind of SUPER Amelia was dealing with through this endeavor. Initially, she was dealing with SUPER at its worst and most clinically efficient. Maybe it spoke to her survival instincts and the progress SUPER was making now for her to come clean? She knew how her old superiors would handle this, which is what gave her pause.
Be better.
Sabine held Amelia’s gaze, weighing her fate and waiting for the girl to blink. Just because she had made up her mind did not mean she wanted to give up control of the meeting. She held the silence for a moment before finally grabbing papers from her folder. ”You will be submitting yourself to a meeting with Alpha division so they can confirm with a telepath that you did not play an intentional role in the termination of your doppelganger.”
Sighing, Sabine scribed her instructions, along with offices Amelia would need to go to for follow-ups. ”Following that and confirmation of your story, you’ll go to medical for a physical so they can determine if there are any aftereffects of what you went through, knowing your actual recent medical history. There will also be mandatory psychiatric appointments, as we would require for any agent who experienced a loss in the field or a major interaction with a high-level psychic. This was obviously both.”
Sabine slid over a small stack of papers. ”And it should go without saying, you will be on Probationary status going forward until your psychiatrist and reporting officers deem necessary.” Sabine looked back up, squarely meeting Amelia’s eyes. ”Any questions?”
Working with mutants meant being prepared for the unexpected. Sabine would never pretend to be prepared for everything, and plenty of the occurrences in her life caught her by surprise. A fool acted like they were one-step ahead of the game, but she focused on keeping at its heels, always ready to catch up in the face of a new revelation.
She could feel something surprising coming from Amelia, and that was before the young woman all but pre-emptively apologized for what came next. Never a great sign. Sabine held her eye contact, her face non-descript and waiting for more.
Amelia working with the X-Men made no sense compared to the files documenting her time in The AV, but the picture became clearer when Amelia admitted to being the doppelganger from the MROverse. Well; clarity was subjective, like the background of an image coming into focus at the cost of the foreground growing blurry.
Of course, the easiest way to keep the whole picture in focus was to get things in black and white, and she needed black and white answers from this Amelia. Fortunately, gent Mellitus was never exactly short on words, and she held to that standard. The story would sound made up to someone more skeptical, but psychic interference, mind twins, and two consciousnesses co-existing sounded as plausible as the de-aging messiah they recently arrested.
And still, Amelia argued that she had done her part as a SUPER Agent. And she was mostly right, barring the de-aged MIA. Of course, being an Agent was more than getting tasks done. ”So. You’ve been operating under half-truths and false pretenses for years now, correct? Concealing information that would be imperative to national security.” Her tone was not strict or leading, it was just the plain stating of facts.
There was another fact in Amelia’s last statement; she was not the only one glad they scaled back the more questionable operations of SUPER’s past. ”And I’m correct in assuming the way you handled things—the very, very questionable way you handled things arose from your concerns over what SUPER would do with a two-minded pseudo-double agent. That is… fair.” It was hard to deny how the mad scientist types would have loved to dissect her figuratively and literally with a situation like that.
Sabine sighed, folding her arms on the table. ”Alright, potential Agent Mellitus. Let’s keep the honesty going. How long have you been debatably compromised? Am I dealing with two Amelias or one cohesive combination of two minds? Given how you speak of the events, I think it is safe to assume the Amelia of this world is the dominant mind?” Knowing what they were dealing with would help Sabine decide a final verdict for Amelia’s fate.
