The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Normally being referred to as part of a herd would be kind of freaky. When Derek said it, it was the highest compliment. It made Allegra feel like she was part of a family.
She sighed as the handsome masseuse introduced himself and then started his work. Now this was the stuff!
"Mmmmmm," Allegra answered Xavia and Derek when they asked her how she was doing. "I need to do this every day. Seriously!"

Allegra felt embarrassed for being so freaked out. You’d think after being at Mutant High for a couple weeks she would have gotten used to it, but she hadn’t. Each new mutation was a scary freak show for her. She had to remind herself that Kendra hadn’t really done anything wrong. It had to be really lonely walking the halls alone.
Allegra kept that thought in mind when Kendra teleported. She stifled a scream though her two dogs yipped loudly. This place took a lot of getting used to for them too.
“I guess I’d be more comfortable if I could see you,” Allegra admitted. “But don’t worry about it. I’m cool with it as long as I know where you are.”
Sparkle hopped off the couch and, tail wagging, walked over to Kendra. “See, everything’s fine,” Allegra smiled. Chocolate was still whimpering and hiding under the covers. Allegra stood in front of the frightened dog so Kendra couldn’t see her. “No, you don’t have to wake yourself up,” Allegra said. “You need your sleep, right?”
Allegra had heard that people’s dreams are an important way for them to process thoughts and information. They basically kept people from going crazy. What was it like for this girl to be awake 24 hours a day? “What is it like not to ever dream?” she asked. There was some natural curiosity in the question but also a bit of fear. Kendra seemed normal, but could dream deprivation make her a raging lunatic.
With that unsettling thought in mind, Allegra flinched when Kendra touched her shoulder. She backed away then was greeted by the smell of smoke. Allegra coughed a bit. It wasn’t a pleasant smell but at least Kendra had the courtesy to blow it out into the other room.
"If' you'd like that, I could show you what I like to do for fun. Much easier to show you in person."
Allegra was still nervous about hanging out with this woman but there was something about her that allayed those fears. Also, Sparkle liked her and that said a lot. The Shih Tzu was an excellent judge of character.
But as much as she'd like to go on an adventure, Allegra had to study. She slumped back down on the couch and reached for her textbook.
“I’d love to but I can’t,” Allegra said. “I’ve got a test today and I'll need a small cat nap. Rain check?”
Allegra opened her thick textbook. She was still on the same page she was on when she got down here. Actually, she was on the same paragraph. There was no way she was going to get any studying done and she was too hyped up to go back to sleep.
“Changed my mind. Let’s do it,” Allegra relented. “If I'm gonna procrastinate, I might as well have fun doing it. What should I wear?”
Allegra trusted Alice not to disclose her potential forays into nerd-dom with anyone. Allegra would just die if anyone found out she was wasting time playing a video game when she could be doing much worthwhile pursuits like talking about shopping, planning a shopping trip or actually going shopping.
Allegra would also be mortified if her friends back home found out she was hanging out with someone like Alice. Allegra thought the girl was a lot of fun, but she practically had the word ‘geek’ displayed on her hideous just thrown together outfit. Allegra never would have bullied Alice like some of her friends would have, but there was no way she’d be caught dead hanging out with her in public.
“Serena Rivers. I don’t think I’ve met her yet,” Allegra could always use more friends. “I’d really like to meet Serena sometime. Is she a gamer too?”
“I guess I don’t know much about Comic-Con other than all the news stories live from Comic Con,” Allegra admitted. Allegra hoped Alice didn’t think she was the type that watched the news. She only paid attention to the entertainment news. You know, the important stuff.
Allegra smiled when Alice admired her early attempts at costume making. “Thanks. Supergirl and Disney Princesses were the height of fashion for a five year old and at that age, I pretty much knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I’ve got a picture of me in an Ariel costume which is only slightly better.” She clicked the forward arrow until it showed a picture of Allegra dressed in her homemade Little Mermaid costume.
“Don’t tell anyone, but back then I was even more into superheroes than Disney princesses. My dad had a huge comic book collection and I wanted to be Supergirl or Wonder Woman. I outgrew it of course, but I had a li’l bit of nerd in me back in the day.”
Allegra looked at the picture of the girl Alice wanted to dress up as. “She looks kinda like you,” Allegra said. “And I love the necklace. But the rest of her outfit is kinda drab, don’t you think? Besides, no one is gonna know who you’re dressed as. Why not Wonder Woman? The movie just came out. so everyone’s going to know who she is and her costume is plenty sexy.”
“Thanks for the support,” Allegra said. She never thought she was ever good enough but the support of her friends helped to motivate her when she couldn’t motivate herself. “Hey, maybe we can work together on an outfit together. One rule of fashion design is to try to push yourself to do things that you wouldn’t normally do to stretch your creativity. And it’d be fun to work together.”
Allegra was looking forward to checking out these games, but Alice suggested they play in the living room. People might see her there! What if word got out that Allegra was hanging out with the school nerd (no matter how awesome she was) and playing video games? That could be social suicide.
“The living room gets, um, too crowded and other people might want to watch TV or something,” Allegra pointed out. “Why don’t we just chill out in your room. You’ve got your whole game collection there anyway.”
Oh my god! Allegra was now afraid that Alice might think she was hitting on her. Allegra wasn’t into girls and certainly not into girl gamers. She hoped Alice would realize this was purely platonic.
Allegra was so popular back at her old school. Why was navigating the social scene so difficult for her here?
"Oh, I guess that's why I never heard of the Camera show," Allegra said. "It's really, really, really old." Hadn't Charlie said that she remembered the show when it first aired? No, that was impossible. Allegra must have heard her wrong.
Charlie explained about the sloths that were maybe in Australia. The way her speech was drifting off, Allegra was wondering if Charlie was on some kind of drugs. Perhaps she was coming down from an Ecstasy buzz. It made sense. Some of the things Charlie was talking about were pretty loopy but that made Allegra appreciate her more. She was far more interesting to talk to than Kristii and her sheep.
"So you had the tattoo removed?" Allegra asked. "I hear that's even more painful than getting a tattoo in the first place. More reason for me never to get one."
Wait, that sounded so lame and boring. Charlie seemed so adventurous and, as always with new people she met, Allegra wanted to impress them. Allegra didn't want Charlie to think she was boring and lame. "Though, maybe today I'll get totally wild and get one," Allegra said. "YOLO, right? I should just go for it."
Charlie told Allegra that she wouldn't even remember her 'friends' in a few years. "A few years is an eternity," Allegra said. "I'll still be in high school."
She smiled. "Don't take offense but you sound just like my best friend's Emma's mom. That woman is so cool. She's way older than you of course. I think she's almost like 40 but she always says stuff like that and she really means it. So different than my mom. She says I need to be more like Kristii and stop being a total loser like...well....me."
"That's interesting you came for a funeral but just fell in love with NYC?" Allegra asked. "They say most people from here weren't born here. They came to New York to themselves. It looks like you really did. You seem so confident and happy here. Maybe it'll be the same with me."
Allegra felt so lost and alone here. "How did you start your new life? Was it hard? Was it lonely? It just seems so hard to meet people. Even at my own school, the kids are just so different. It's hard to relate to most of them."
A couple frat boys made more catcalls at Allegra. "I have to get out of this outfit!" she said. She followed Charlie through the crowd. "Look over there. There's some hippy girl selling homemade outfits. They're kinda boho cute, huh?"
"Well, thank you. I'm very grateful," Allegra said. Allegra thought about having kids some day. It would be a lot of work and responsibility. But she hadn't stopped to consider the important stuff. What if her clothes didn't fit anymore. Yikes!
Apparently Xavia had another daughter who Derek had already met. Allegra hoped to meet her someday. For now, though, she just closed her eyes and enjoyed the pampering.
Allegra had just expected Derek to get a phone number and come back. Looks like he and the guys were bonding.
Allegra took the time to go to the kitchen to refill the smoothie jug. When she came back, Derek and the Blue Man Group reject were still chatting.
That was fine. Allegra lay back, put on her shades and just relaxed. She would have drifted off to sleep if Derek hadn't come back to announce his success.
"Congratulations, you stud," Allegra congratulated him. "I wonder if anything will come of it. Any interest?"
Allegra, herself, had no interest in the guy. She didn't want to seem racist, but blue guys just weren't her thing.
Now it was her turn. "I'm feeling pretty daring," she smiled.
When you're faced with an invisible stalker, all kinds of things run through your head. This person could conceivable be anyone and do anything Allegra felt a sense of impending doom and dread terror.
<<"Well hun, I'm the biology teacher's teaching assistant.">>
Not exactly the harbinger of doom. Allegra wasn’t taking Biology this semester so there wasn’t even the threat of this invisible being giving her an 'F.' This combined with the fact that Sparkle had taken a liking to the invisible T.A. made Allegra feel a little bit safer. She lowered the heavy textbook but still clutched it tightly to her chest. Just in case. Who knows what Kendra would do next?
Next thing Allegra saw was the lid to the peanut butter jar twist and flip over on its side to the table. She then saw a dab of peanut butter fly up from the jar only to disappear. Allegra could only assume Kendra was sticking her finger in the jar and eating the peanut butter. Not sinister or threatening but still gross! It was perfectly okay for the dogs to lick the rim of the jar but people’s fingers had germs!
There, She did it again. “Um, there’s a knife right over there,” Allegra offered than wished she hadn’t. It was only a butter knife but it’s still not a good idea to offer a knife to an invisible person.
Then the disembodied southern voice explained that she wasn’t really invisible. Allegra wasn’t going for that. “I can’t see you. That means you’re invisible,” Allegra asserted.
There was more explanations about an astral presence and dream projections. To Allegra’s sleep deprived brain it all sounded like ‘blah, blah, blah.’ Still she tried to understand it.
“You’re like a ghost but you’re not dead? Just sleeping?” she asked. This was honestly not the most bizarre thing she had heard since coming here, so she was going with it.
Kendra then slid Sparkle off her lap and got up to give a demonstration. Allegra could now see a hazy reflection in the TV screen. It was kind of freaky. Allegra saw herself standing next to Kendra in the reflected image but couldn’t see Kendra herself. Allegra was actually looking through the woman to see her reflection. How weird was that?
Allegra set down the textbook, dug into her backpack and pulled out her compact. She opened it up and held up the mirror to get a better look at Kendra. She was pretty, especially for a ghost.
“I’m Allegra,” she offered when Kendra introduced herself. “Sorry, I don’t have a fancy title like Dream Walker. I’m just a student. Oh and your new furry friend over there is Sparkle and that’s Chocolate hiding under the covers there. So, do you do this kind of thing often? Spy on insomniacs without them knowing? That’s kind of creepy, you know.”
Allegra thought about it. This woman apparently never really slept and life had to be pretty boring wandering the mansion alone at night like a ghost. Allegra would cause all kinds of mischief if she had Kendra’s powers. She could already imagine herself messing up Mr. Turner’s perfectly OCD-arranged kitchen. That would be all kinds of fun and that would just be a start.
“Next time, just let me know you’re here, okay?” Allegra requested. “I get insomnia sometimes and could always use some company. Also,I’m always up ungodly early to go running so you are always welcome to join me.”
Allegra felt a little more at ease now so she plopped back down on the couch next to her cowering puppy.
“So tell me. Other than nearly giving new students heart attacks, what else do you like to do for fun?”
Sparkle’s barks slowly turned to low growls then whimpers then finally silence. She still stood rigid staring at the couch. She was positive something was there and she wasn't going to rest until she figured out what it was.
Chocolate felt safe cradled under Allegra’s arm so she calmed down and eventually forgot what she was afraid of in the first place. Allegra found herself lost in the manufactured drama of her show and everything was back to normal.
Allegra jumped when the volume went up. She couldn’t see the remote and didn’t want to turn around and grab it for fear of disturbing the half sleeping dog in her arms. It was a little freaky, but she had encountered a music playing roomba janitor and a robot classmate, so maybe the TV was somehow alive too. If so, the television had excellent taste. Things were just starting to get steamy and raising the volume just heightened the effect. "So.... This is a lil late, but there absolutely is someone here. I'm Kendra."
Allegra jumped up from the couch and shrieked. Chocolate burrowed under the covers hoping her owner would protect her from…well, whatever this was.
Allegra’s eyes bolted around the room looking for something that might be used as a weapon. The nearest thing was her world history book so she grabbed it and held it in front of her; occasionally swinging it at empty air. Allegra tried to put on a confident look that would hopefully convey the idea that she had an extremely thick textbook and she knew how to use it.
Sparkle reacted quite the opposite. Something about the invisible woman’s voice was soothing to her, so she jumped up on the other couch right next to Kendra. Sparkle sniffed at the air then cautiously put a paw on Kendra’s leg. Verifying that this unseen person was indeed real, the dog slowly climbed on Kendra's lap and curled up into a ball.
From Allegra’s vantage point, the dog was resting on thin air right above the couch. “Who are you?” Allegra asked. Someone named Kendra, obviously, but that didn’t tell her a whole lot.
“You’re an invisible mutant aren’t you?” Allegra asked. She hadn’t run into one of those yet. At least she didn’t think she had. For all she knew, unseen people were running all over the mansion. Maybe some of them had stood in the bathroom watching Allegra shower. Ick! As if Allegra didn’t need yet another reason to be freaked out by her fellow classmates.
However, Sparkle was naturally an excellent judge of character. The dog just seemed to know friend from frenemy from foe. If Carmel trusted this creepy Casper, then maybe she wasn’t all bad. Kendra still had some serious explaining to do.
“How long have you been sitting there?”Allegra asked still holding the third edition of ‘World History and You’ in front of her. “What do you want?”
Sparkle just glanced over at Allegra hoping her owner would just chill out. The tiny dog nuzzled the unseen woman and gently closed her eyes.
“GRRRRRRRR!” the white dog growled. Sparkle was trying to look as terrifying as a Shih Tzu could which, let’s face it, wasn’t very.
“Sparkle! What has gotten into you? Stop!” Allegra shouted.
Her other dog was whimpering and digging herself under Allegra’s arm. “Chocolate? Sweetie what’s wrong?” Allegra asked.
Allegra looked around for whatever could be setting the dogs off but didn’t see anything. “You’re probably just smelling that dog faced mutant boy,” she said. She never stopped to realize that her dogs might be as freaked out by all the mutated folks at the mansion as she was.
“Look, I don’t like him either but I think he’s harmless and if he does anything I’ll smack him across the nose, okay?” Allegra promised her puppies. It didn’t seem to reassure them. Chocolate was still whimpering and Sparkle was still growling at thin air.
“Tomorrow I’ll ask dog-face to get a FURminator, okay?” Allegra said. “If he’s gonna be a mutt mutant, he’s gotta clean up after himself. Now guys. Give it a rest. I need to study. I’m only on page…..”
That’s odd. Allegra could have sworn she had her book open but the book was closed and out of reach. The remote was sitting on the edge of the table beckoning to her.
“Okay, TV break. Just a small one.”
Allegra figured her dog would give up growling soon enough. She flipped to the reality TV channel just in time for a Kardashian marathon.
“Season 4. Awesome!” she exclaimed. “Truly the best season by far. I've kind of lost interest in the show, but this was when it was at it's peak,” she said with the air of a critic or a connoisseur sampling fine wine. Allegra sent the remote down on the table out of sight and prepared to enjoy perhaps some of the finest hours of reality TV ever to be aired.
Allegra made an excited noise that sounded kind of like ‘squee!’ when Xaxia offered the clothes to Alelgra. “Oh my god! Thank you! Thank you! Again!”
Derek looked a little bored with this conversation though he was contributing to the conversation.
“Yep, a lot of clothes don't have tags. When you come to California, I’ll take you to some of the private boutiques,” Allegra said. “I’ve had originals made just for me. You’ll love it.”
She could talk about clothes for days but she had to be sensitive to Derek possibly being bored. He also seemed dead set on getting more details on Xavia and this mysterious Altair.
“So what was it you were talking about before?” Allegra asked Derek.
Allegra caught the beginning of Derek's frown. "I'm sorry to bring it up," she said. "All I've ever had was unrequited loves and that sucked. I still can't imagine what it's like to love someone for real and lose them. I'm sure you will always have a place for Jake in your heart just like I'm sure he does for you."
"Yeah, just $3,000," Allegra said. "It was such a gorgeous necklace and I was able to get a real good deal. I wouldn't have been able to afford it otherwise. Angelique really loved it. It was the first time I saw her smile since her breakup. Just for that, the necklace was more than worth it."
"Dare, huh?" Allegra smiled wickedly. She looked over at the pool where the blue guy from class and his friends were hanging out. "Go over and get one of their phone numbers."
Allegra figured Derek was comfortable enough being gay that he wouldn't mind and, if not, he could always strike up conversation and ask for a number to hang out as friends. Allegra still wanted to throw in an out in case Derek really felt really uncomfortable.
"When we play, you're able to throw out up to three dares," she said. "But if you do, choose wisely."
Allegra smiled at Alice’s enthusiasm. She was as much into geek culture as Allegra was into clothes. Granted Alice’s interest was totally lame, but it was great to see someone so excited about something.
“Okay, I’ll give being a secret nerd a shot,” Allegra said. “Emphasis on ‘secret.’”
“Half sisters, huh? What’s her name? I’d like to meet her,” Allegra said. Allegra had been really outgoing at her old school but that was largely because she had her friends around her. She was having considerably more difficulty meeting people here now that she had to go it on her own.
“Oh, Comic-con. That’s where they announce all the new movies,” Allegra said. Alice mentioned dressing up like comic book characters. “What do comic books have to do with Comic-con?” she asked. “Oh. Comic books. Comic-con. I thought it was because there’s comedians acting in the movies?”
“So what kind of characters do you dress up as?” Allegra asked. “Hold on. I need to show you something. Promise me you won’t laugh.”
Allegra flipped through the photos on her phone until she came up with a picture of herself at five years old dressed in a red cape and a blue dress with an ‘S’ on it. “My first design. A Supergirl costume. Pretty awful, huh? But I was only five and that’s what started my interest in fashion. I’m not gonna go into the details about how I thought I could fly and busted up my leg.”
“Oh, my creative arts teacher here is awesome,” Allegra said. “He’s kind of a big nerd. You’d like him. Has us call him ‘Arnie.’ But he’s really cool and supportive. He says he’s got some contacts in the fashion world who can mentor me when I’m ready. I’m really excited about the idea. And nervous too. What if I’m not good enough.”
“Electrical engineering degree? Wow,” Allegra said. “You must be really smart. If I ever get my own fashion line going, maybe you could help me with the website or something.”
Alice asked if Allegra wouldn’t mind doing the drying while she did the washing. It was certainly the lesser of two evils, though she really didn’t want to do either.
“Sure,” Allegra relented. She set her plate on the ground so her dogs could lick it clean. “If this place can’t afford a housekeeper, that’s the next best thing,” Allegra said. Some people got a little grossed out about dogs licking off things that people ate off of, but Allegra couldn’t figure out why. They were very clean little puppies.
Allegra took a towel and started drying off the silverware as it was handed to her. “You know, I’m kinda looking forward to playing your video games,” she said. “It’s something new and different. Best of all, it’s something. I used to go out all the time back home, but I’ve been a big hermit since I got here.”
Allegra lay awake worrying. She worried about a lot of things since coming to Xavier’s, but #1 on the list tonight was her history final tomorrow. She kept telling herself that instead of staying awake worrying about it, she should get up and study.
This would involve two things that Allegra hated; getting out of bed and studying. So she just rolled over and failed to get back to sleep. The cycle continued.
Allegra did enjoy eating, so a little snack might be motivation to get up. The two tiny dogs sleeping on her legs whined in protest. It was 3am. This was sleep time. Disrupting the natural order of things was not allowed.
“Oh, come on you two,” Allegra coaxed. “There's treats involved.”
Both of them knew the ‘T’ word and suddenly they became bundles of energy yipping and yapping loudly. Allegra’s sleeping neighbors were certainly thrilled by this.
Allegra was a diehard fashionista but as far as sleepwear, she veered in the opposite direction. Every time she'd visit a new city she would buy the most touristy oversized T-shirt she could find and that was her sleepwear. Tonight she was wearing a bright red shirt with the golden gate bridge and a streetcar with the words ‘San Francisco’ over the top just in case you couldn’t figure out where the shirt came from. She put on her tacky ragged pink bunny slippers, grabbed her backpack and led the barking dogs down the hall and to the kitchen.
After giving the dogs their favorite Barky Bisuits, she cored an apple and grabbed a jar of creamy peanut butter. Apples and peanut butter was one of her favorite snacks and hopefully it would give her energy.
The living room was empty so she sprawled out on one of the most comfortable couches. The TV loomed temptingly in front of her.
“No, must study,” Allegra told herself. The tiny black dog jumped up to snuggle next to her owner. Allegra opened her history book while the dog licked at the peanut butter.
“Okay, the Seven Years’ War,” Allegra muttered to herself. “All the teachers say that we have to study history so we’re not doomed to repeat it. Well, I can guarantee you that I won’t be picking up a musket and joining the French army anytime soon. Why can’t I just skip this test?”
The black dog nodded in agreement as her tongue made its way around the peanut butter jar. The white dog, on the other had was standing at attention growling at the air.
“Sparkle, stop!” Allegra shouted at the dog. “There is absolutely no one there. You’re disturbing my procrastination so cut it out.”
Allegra’s eyes glazed over her textbook. Maybe she could take a small break before she started studying and watch a little TV. That is, if the dog would stop barking.
Allegra looked over at Xavia who seemed to be in her own world. That was something Allegra could certainly relate to as she often checked out of reality herself. The land of fantasy and daydreams was usually far superior to this one.
Xavia, however, looked like she didn't have to dream about how things might be. That guy she was dating certainly left an impression with her. And she had baby on the way. Allegra didn't think she'd have the strength to raise a child on her own like Xavia was planning on doing. She had seen enough episodes of '16 and Pregnant' to know what a responsibility a child was.
"You're never going to let my little crush on you go are you?" Allegra laughed. "That's ancient history." One week ago was 'history.' Two weeks ago was 'ancient.'
"God, I am so looking forward to a massage followed by an aromatherapy mani-pedi and an algae mineral wrap detox." She wondered if she'd get some champagne afterwards like at her spa back home.
