The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Kendra watched, yes, Kendra; watched as he got up and moved to the door. She blinked her eyes a few times. She wasn't sure how she had gotten into the coffee shop. She watched him get up and leave. Her big brown eyes following him too the door. She smiled sheepishly and brushed the hair back out of her face. It had fallen out of it's ponytail and hung in her eyes. A few strands of red hair stubbornly obstructing her vision. Kendra noticed the large meal in front of her.
She felt pretty full, and that was a good thing. She usually burned around 4,500 calories a day. Just between her waking and dreaming hours. Seemed about right. She could eat this much and more and still feel ravenous. Though now, watching Sam leave she didn't much feel like eating. She felt a deep blush burning into her cheeks. She was hot and tired and sick feeling to her stomach. Had she really just eaten all of this in front of him? He must thing she was the weirdest girl he had ever met in his life.
She heard the jingle of the bell as the door opened. And when she looked up again he was gone. She slumped in her booth a little bit. Still feeling the stinging heat of embarrassment in her flush face. Kendra looked down and noticed she had something in her hand. She turned it over. It was small and square and leather. It was a wallet. That dastardly Dream had picked Sam's pocket while he sat in the booth with her. Probably when she was reaching acrosss the table grabbing this or that, ketchups and sugars and sauces and napkins.
"Oh dear oh dear." Kendra said flustered. She stood up almost knocking the table over in the process. She caused a loud clattering of silverware and cups. She awkwardly slid out of the booth and started towards the door. "Hey you didn't pay!" Someone called back at her. Kendra blushing more than ever ran back to the table and dropped some bills on it before sprinting to the door. She had to catch him. Only when she got outside the street was empty. The coffee had done enough to her sleepy state of mind to make Dream disappear. To put Kendra back into the driver's seat for the time being. Sweet, innocent, bashful honest Kendra.
Kendra opened the wallet and looked at the picture. He wasn't smiling. Did he ever smile? She wondered. She thought a bout him a moment and smiled herself. She couldn't help it. "Sam Johnson." She said out loud reading his Driver's license. Well. She thought. I'll just have to return it too him at home. She started to walk down the sidewalk. Sure that he had flown off or something to that effect. The man had super powers he didn't seem like the walk casually down the sidewalk type. Kendra knew she could be at his door in 4 seconds if she was asleep, but somehow walking down the sidewalk didn't bother her. She could use the fresh air. Walking past the bar, the rowdy bar next door; Kendra didn't even stop to consider he might have gone in for a quick drink.

Dream was growing bored of Sam already. He was one tight mouthed, close liped, son of a gun. He didn't give you more then the bare minimum as far as conversations went. He didn't offer up the extra juicey details. She wanted to know his story, but she didn't want to have to pry it out of him with a crowbar. She leaned back in her seat allowing her head to rest against the window. It had started to rain. She turned her face to the glass and enjoyed the coolness of it on her hot skin. The tiny feeling of the raindrops vibriting the window as they pelted it. It was really coming down now. She breathed deep and could smell coffee. The waitress sat her coffee in front of her. She reached down and touched the cup enjoying the warmth in her soft hands. Dream, was alive.
She hadn't been outside of her slumber with her hand on the wheel in awhile. She had never been out to play when Kendra's body was technically awake. Was she really going to waste her new found freedom in a coffee shop? There were other customers enjoying their lives. Sitting in the other seats of the coffee shop Basking in the mundane. Dream thought about how fun it would be to pull out her tranq gun and dart herself right here. To watch the panic and confusion wash over Sam's face as he tried to do the right thing. She could dream walk away and get into some more trouble elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Dudely Do-right would be busy trying to take care of / explain her unconscious body. He'd probably try to take her someplace safe. Like back to his place perhaps? She raised an eyebrow at this and a smirk placed across her face. Her eyes were still closed. Her head still on the cool glass. "So, you always do the right thing then?" Dream asked out of nowhere. He had showed her the badge. He was bound by justice or the side of good or something equally boring. "Don't you ever want to do the bad thing?" Dream thought about the possibilities of waking up as scared confused Kendra in a strange man's apartment. The idea was simply too good to pass up. She patted her jacket where her tranq gun rested. She just wanted to feel it's reassuring weight beneath her fingertips.
The gun hung on the side farthest away from Sam. She smiled as her food came and she was a girl who could put it away. I can fall sleeping into his arms in a bit. For now let's eat. She thought. Dream began to put it away. Bite by bite she barely stopped to breathe. She wasn't finished chewing one thing before moving on to the next bite of something else. One thing she had found was that being awake 24/7 meant you burned a lot of calories. Her body may be physically resting and not actually moving, but muscles ached in her bed if her dream self lifted too much. If she ran her legs would throb.
Even when dreaming Kendra burned calories. It meant she always had a not so lady like appetite. She shoveled food in reaching across to steal one of Sam's fries because she had forgotten to order some with her order. Truthfully Sam hadn't ordered any either, but the waitress added the fries no extra charge because she recognized him. Dream looked at Sam with a mouth full of food. SHe raised an eyebrow. "You going to eat that?" She asked pointing at his burger. Most of her food was gone already. Sam simply hadn't started eating yet because Dream's arms were flying all over the table. Grabbing napkins, picking up and putting down utensils, reaching for glasses to wash it all down and moving plates out of the way to get to the next one. It was quite the spectacle. She didn't rightly care. She batted her big brown eyes at him as she swallowed what was in her mouth.
There was stains of ketchup and mayo at opposing corners of her mouth. Her hair had been pulled back into a ponytail before the feasting began. She didn't want to have it in her way. When she ate this way she found sometimes she found herself accidently chewing on hair that had fallen in the way. She looked at him a long moment. She felt no shame. She did what her body needed of her and she liked to eat anyways. Dream still planned on bailing not only on the check, but the date in particular. Let this guy take care of her body while she went out for a night on the town looking for something dangerous to get into. Dream wasn't a hardened criminal, but a little crime could be fun. Especially the kinds that ended in a high speed chase or the use of leathal force. Pushing peoples buttons was almost a hobby for her.

Kendra almost beamed at the sound of coffee. Weather she was Kendra, or Dream, or Daydream, she never turned down a cup of coffee. It was the life blood that gave her the ability to keep living. She supposed she could live without it, but why would she want too?? Having sleep based powers was for the birds. She was always tired, or just waking up still tired. She couldn't remember the last time her body didn't radiate with a faint numbness. That pins and needles feeling when one of your limbs was falling asleep. She lived in a constant stay of conscious awareness. It was a miracle she hadn't gone slowly insane by now. But who was to say that persona of Dream wasn't her insanity peeking out to say hello every now and then?
Kendra walked ahead of him. She had a slight skip in her step. Her hair bounced lovingly around her shoulders with each step. She was a looker. Even when she was dog tired, and had bags under her eyes Kendra oozed this radiant positivity. It wasn't Kendra he was dealing with however. It was her fun loving alter ego Dream. The trouble maker from deep within her mind and heart. The girl that Kendra would have become if she had a slightly different upbringing. Instead she was mousy and shy most days. Quiet and clumsy. Unassuming and timid. Dream was her complete opposite. Choosing to do what she wanted when she wanted. Dream didn't konw what this guy's story was, but she would get it out of him. She had already decided she liked him. He was handsome. He had saved her. That was enough for her.
"Keep up honey. I thought i was the one with all the bumps and owies." She smiled at him as she crossed the street. Dream didn't slow even though traffic had decided not to slow either. A car, which almost ran her down in the street screeched to a halt. A horn blared out. It was followed by a slew of obscene words that a lady would never repeat. "Blow it out your ass!" Dream opened the door and held it open for Sam to walk in first. Dream quietly wondered how many times she had sat on this stool. The coffee shop was called. 'Deja Brew' A fitting name seeing as she practically lived here. Dream took a seat in a booth, leaning confidently back on her elbows.
She was aware that her shirt was slightly ripped at the top, it showed a modest bit of skin and that was more than okay. "First round coffee.. Then a couple of cold ones for an actual cold one." She laughed. The place next door was a bar. Even in New York, you weren't likely to find a combination coffee shop bar. And while this shop was cutesy and respectable.... The place next door was a dive bar. It was dirty, loud and full of unsavory types. The type of place you were going to find degenerates and low lives. If she was going to be completely honest. Next door was the place to be. But she could play along. She could be the damsel in distress a little bit longer. She allowed her features to soften a little. He seemed oh so worried about her still. It was written all over his face. Poor Sam might've been a lot of things, but she doubted very much if one of them was a poker player.
She patted the seat neat to her with her hand. "Sit here sugar. I don't bite. Even if'n I did. You look like you could use a bite." She laughed coyly. She raised an eyebrow. "I meant food." She proclaimed innocently enough. That absolutely was not what she meant, but she played it off well enough handing him a menu. When the waitress came around Dream ordered a coffee black and a double cheeseburger with everything on it. A side of fries, a slice of pie, a rootbeer float and a three slices of cheesecake. She batted her eyes looking at Sam. "Order what'chu like. It's on me handsome." She said. Kendra would not flirt with this man. She would have quietly and shyly just thanked him for the help and left. She would have thought of him all the rest of that day, but she wouldn't have taken a risk. Kendra was not in the driver's seat however.
Dream's smile broadened. She knew she was being playful and dangerous, but wasn't danger the spice of life? She for the life of her did not understand why Kendra never took any risks. Why she never let herself actually live a little. She had her body most of the time, she was always in control. Dream found it very frustrating to be shoved deep down within the girl's sub conscious. Dream knew she could give Kendra a better life. They were basically the same person, but Dream considered herself, much like Kendra a different beast all together. "So what's your story anyways? You always go around looking for cats to save out of trees? Or am' I just special?" She smiled at him showing all her dazzling teeth, her dimples and her bright brown eyes.

Kendra was listening very hard. So hard in fact she was leaned in very close to Amelia. Her eyes were big and brown and unblinking. She still held her coffee in her two hands. Cupping the warmth, not realizing it was actually burning her hands. She was lost in thought. Fascinated by what she was hearing. Bascially they kept tthe world safe from not only mutants but just regular old bad guys as well. "Sure. No need to go any further. I'm in." How many times has she felt like a victim? How many times had she wished she could do more? Sure, she wasn't running around the city in tights or a costume trying to make the world a better place, but she absolutely had the chance to do just that.
When Kendra finally realized she was burning her hands she took them away slowly. She didn't want to make a big noticable deal about it. She pressed them lightly against the cool, metal underside of the counter. She had a few more questions, but they were superficial. The one thing that was on her mind at the moment was the mysterious powers of Amelia. "What exactly is'it you do anyways? Those were some impressive powers. You put a hurt'n on that boy." She said admiringly. Kendra plucked a straw off the straw dispenser and stuck it in her coffee. Not wanting to resign herself to further burns. She could be this way. A little socially awkward at times. She batted her eyes as she drank coffee through a straw. The visiual was a little silly, but she was feeling more herself. Feeling more confident.
"I dream walk. Have'ta be asleep to use my powers. It's why i carry a tranq gun. Obviously dart'n myself up all the time has it's draw backs. I don't do it all the time.... It might have.... Side effects." Kendra considered and went on further. "My body is vulnerable, when i astral project. If someone touches my body, i feel it in the dream world and vice versa. Bruises, cuts thangs like that; show up on ma'body while I'm sleeping, if'n I'm getting my ass handed to me in the dreamin world." Kendra thought about it a little bit more. She really wanted to at least nail down the main points of her ability. "Though when I wake up, most of the nasty stuff's been healed over. Oh! And I'm invisible in my dreams. So is the thangs i fall asleep with. They come with me. So like if i were to fall asleep with a machine gun in my arms.... Invisible bullets ya know what I mean?" It was kind of crazy to think about. Kendra had never really thought to bring anything really dangerous with her into her dreams. Then again, she never really went to sleep with the intentions of fighting anyone. It just sorta happened. Kendra hesitated. She wasn't sure if she should tell Amelia about Dream. Her alter ego persona who happened to be trouble personified. She decided to tell her. "I have to have time to rest. If i go to hard at it.... My brain doesn't get the proper amount of rest it needs to do whatever it is it does, and my cognitive functioning, inhibitions, decision making skills all go down the crapper." Kendra smiled a friendly smile. I showed you mine. Show me yours, she thought. She had asked Amelia about her powers but ended up not waiting for an answer before she blurted out what is was she did. She wasn't exactly speaking quiet. She could see the waitress out of the corner of her eye. She was watching them carefully. "Daydream's not just a name. It's a hobby." She said almost apologetically. For Her impulsiveness. She had been up almost forty two hours. The bags under her eyes and her impulsive, jittery nature might've had something to do with the coffee. It might have had something to do with Dream.

Kendra's smile deepened. She shouldn't be such a rube. She was in fact used to things going off the rails. They always did around her. It wasn't just that Kendra was accident prone. She was an accident magnet. She was always finding herself accidentally in dangerous situations. LIke she attracted them. Her code name should be fatal attraction. "Yeah... I tend to do that." Kendra said about his comment of her fast healing. Screw it. He already showed that all he cared about was weather or not she was okay. So what if he knew she was a mutant. "It's part'o my mutation I thank. Some people call me Daydream. Most just call me trouble." She smiled weakly and allowed him to get a closer look at her head.
He wasn't much of a conversationalist, but at least he was cute. And he seemed to be genuinely worried. There were worse ways to spend an afternoon. " Kendra watched as the clone fell away. Here one minute and gone the next. "He didn't feel that did he?" Kendra asked with actual concern in her voice. She felt bad for the clone. Her eyes searched his face as she waited for him to reply. Man this guy seemed really to be worried about her head. "I dream walk. If i go unconscious I astral project. Thangs are healed by time i get back to my body. I don't know how it works but I'm fine I promise. What about'chu? Are you hurt? I didn't see the whole thang, but sounded like he was giving you a wallop." Kendra eyed him thoughtfully. She hadn't considered the police but she nodded when he suggested filing charges. Kendra's mind was a tight wire of bouncing ideas. She was going into a million different directions. Everything from having to show up in court that would be a drag, to wondering if every part of this guy was cold to the touch. As clumsy as she was she was always falling down and being sore. This guy was one big icepack to sooth her aching muscles. How nice would that be? She bit her lip and flicked her eyes back up to meet his. "Can we skip all the boring parts and just go get a drink?" She asked. Kendra was never this forward.
Then again, she was in the mood to take a risk and be a little risky. She lived her life as the good girl who always kept her nose clean. And she still got launched into a tree. Maybe living on the wildside was called for. What Kendra didn't know was that blow to the head WAS a concussion. It was making her micronap. The daydreams were a part of it. They weren't just zoning out, but full fledged micronaps. Only a few seconds and never something that would have raised an alarm bell in her head.
Her brain did this thing when her already terrible sleep schedule got messed with. The chemistry of her brain made her cognitive function go out the window. Inhibitions? Forget about them. The idea of risk? Wasn't even a factor anymore. She had a name for this phenomenon. She called this altered mental state Dream. It was a whole other side to her persona. It slipped out little by little as her brain chemistry worsened. The blow to the head did her no favors. Dream didn't care about the consequences. She didn't care about her nuclear fallout. She just liked to watch the pretty explosions. Dream did whatever she wanted. Whatever was fun. "I'll buy the first round." Dream said walking over to the bad guy Sam had caught. He was still in cased in ice. He watched her though as she approached.
Dream saw his wallet on the ground. She bent and picked it up. Rifling through it she grabbed a few bills. "To cover my medical expenses big guy." She tossed at him over her shoulder. Also tossing his wallet over her shoulder as she walked way. The mutant became angry. "You little witch. I will find you and end you. Trust me." Dream stopped for a moment. She was fully awake. This was the first time her Dream persona had taken over when she was fully awake. She turned and smiled. And blew him a kiss. "Then find me." She said and turned back towards Sam. "Shall we?"

Kendra watched the hero land in front of her. She was wearing a smile on her face. Even despite her injuries. Her injuries might have been more intense if she hadn't lost consciousness. Though when she entered her astral form, she woke up with a healed over scar on the back of her head and a barely existent ache in her back. Pain was more numbed out in the astral plane. When she woke up whatever pain she had felt was still there, but mostly healed. It was a good thing too. Kendra stood up when Sam approached her. "Preciate you takin care''o thangs." Kendra said with her heavy Georgia accent. She hed out her hand unsure what to make of the guy but wanting to thank him properly all the same. "Kendra." She said humbly.
She didn't offer her mutant name. He didn't know she was a mutant. Or at least he wasn't sure if he did ot not. The one to her right didn't seem likely to tell him. He seemed to be stuck on a loop repeating the word safe. Kendra turned to the ice clone. "Thank you kindly too." She added giving the clone a kiss on it's cold cold cheek. Kendra smiled brightly showing the dimples in her cheeks. Her eyes seemed to twinkle and light up as she did this. She supposed she didn't want this guy to think of her as a mutant. It wouldn''t have been the worst thing in the world. He was a mutant, but for once in her whole life she just wanted to be seen as Kendra. Not Daydream. The girl with the quirky powers that always got a million questions. And rightly so it took a while to explain them.
"What happens to that guy? I don't even know that guy. He just started raging out." Kendra said. Unaware that she still had her hand on her camera. Leaving the fairly obvious conclusion that the guy who kept crying about not wanting to go back to jail, might have gotten his picture taken. Kendra was a sweet girl, but she wasn't the shaprest cookie in the box of light bulbs if you know what I mean. Sometimes she daydreamed literally and her mind would subvert to the craziest fantasies. Like how she saw Sam standing in front of her just now with a flowing cape and his hair blowing in the wind. Sam turned his head and slightly so the sunshine could strike behind him. Catching his silohuette in an amber glow that made him look like an angel. He smiled at her with his balled fists pressed neatly into his hips in a classic hero pose. When he smile a twinkle shinned off his perfect teeth. It was dazzling. Blinding really. Somewhere behind him, somewhere in the park the national anthem was playing. "It was nothing ma'am. Just doing the work of America, for freedom and and all that. I would love to take you out for dinner and a night of dancing." Sam said to her. Kendra blushed and giggled out loud.
Blinking her eyes a few times Kendra realized none of that was actually real. Sam was standing in front of her staring at her, and a deep heat rose in her cheeks. "Sorry. Drifted off inta'ma head there for a moment." She apologized. She still stared at Sam's teeth wanting to see if they were as dazzlingly white as in her fantasy, but she also took a shy step back feeling a little dumb in the moment. She also felt very hot despite the very cool guy in front of her. He had a very strange effect on her indeed.

Kendra's coffee came as the waitress sat it down in front of her. Leaning over it, Kendra stared at her own reflection. The small ripples moving through the dark liquid gave the reflected image a dream like quality. Kendra was no longer wearing the bitch face. She listened to Amelia tell her about how she joined SUPER and the final tumbler clicked into the lock. Her heart started to speed up again. She knew she was discovered and Kendra turned on her seat to face Amelia. "Guessin I'm something differant then what'chu were expecting." She wasn't surprised. "Sorry." She admitted. Even though Amelia had told her she had joined SUPER in pretty much the same way.
"We got the guy though." She added sulkily. She tried to force herself to stop interrupting. Even though she felt she had to justify herself. The next thing out of Amelia's mouth almost floored her. She offered her a job. "You're shitting me." Kendra said. "Well I guess i should probably start by saying my real handle is Daydream. I'm nobodies. Nightmare. I'm clumsy and untrained. You'd be crazy to offer me this job. I do need the money though. Not a lotta money in pictures these days." If Amelia was going to offer Kendra a job. The least she could do was be straight with her so she knew what she was getting into. If they became partners or whatever, she had to know who was having her back. They nabbed the bad guy this time. But Kendra only had a few amature back alley vigelante scraps. She had a single training session with an X-man in the danger room of the mansion; and there was that time that her and a Scottish fellow named Artair Hawke took down a drug den. But, that was the extent of her heroism.
Come to think about it, Kendra didn't know the first thing about SUPER. She didn't know if they were the good guys or the bad guys. She remembered the AV split when time did some wonky things with reality. Kendra just wasn't that much into the news. There was enough bad stuff in the world she didn't have to fill her sleepless nights with it. Watching the news could make you nod off when you were already asleep. Kendra found herself slowly nodding. "Sure what's the job?" Kendra was all ears. Turning back to face the counter Kendra listened. Taking her coffee into her hands. She sighed at the warmth of it on such a cold night.
Kendra looked down at her coffee and took a sip. Flagging the waitress she asked for a slice of pie as well. For a skinny little twig of a thing Kendra could eat. You ever been awake at 3 in the morning? You fill alot of your free time eating when you're up late. And Kendra didn't gain weight when she ate as her astral form. The food came back with her but metabolized super fast. It was one of the few weird good quirks of her abilities. She turned and looked at Amelia as she spoke. Kendra wasn't sure if Amelia understood her powers. Kendra didn't understand Amelia's at all. She had started to daydream. "I'm sorry can you repeat that last bit?" Silently making a mental note to crawl out of her head for a moment and pay attention.

Kendra's face lit up at the mention of coffee. Once all of the official stuff was taken care of she realized how badly she needed it. Coffee was her life's blood. When Kendra had first discovered her mutation she was about six. She started drinking coffee by six and a half. It helped keep what kiddie Kendra called the "Bad dreams" away. She smiled broadly at her new companion. "Kendra. Kendra Dillenger." She said confidently. She couldn't remember the last time she had made a friend in this city. It wasn't exactly the friendliest place to live, but it was home for now.
Kendra checked her phone. It wasn't actually too late. Sleep could wait. It had waited this long at any rate. Moving through the street there was a light fog on the street. The orange of the street lamps cast a ghostly glow on the wet street. Horns, people shouting, there was all the usual ambience, but there was also.... A steady thumping in Kendra's chest. Her heart pounding in her ears she wore the face of a liar. She was smiling broadly though she had no idea if Nightmare was the type of person who smiled this much. She figured not with a name like Nightmare. She let the smile drop from her face and instead resigned herself to a healthy dose of resting bitch face.
Kendra didn't talk much after that. Not until they got where they were going that is. She looked around and the coffee shop was empty. It wasn't surprising for this late at night. Who was looking to get hopped up on caffeine this time of night. There was the odd college student here or there around the place at random tables. For the most part however, they had the place to themselves. Kendra chose a stool close to the door. It was instinctual. She wasn't planning on bolting for the door if the line of questioning got uncomfortable, but she was expecting a line of questioning. How long can i pull this off? She wondered.
Kendra honestly didn't have the first notion of what to expect. She didn't know what the agents did, or if what they did tonight was completely routine. All she knew was she was still riding the high of tonight's adventures. Kendra decided that she was going to go onto the offensive. "What brought you into this line of work?" She asked looking up at the coffee menu. "Coffee, black." She said. Turning her attention back to the agent. She didn't smile. She looked sour faced and tired. That's right step into the shoes of Nightmare. I bet she's a pretty big ol bitch. Kendra thought and had to stiffle another laugh. She was a happy person by nature. Clumsy, but happy. She was going to have the most difficulty with trying to be a bitch. That absolutely was not in her nature.

Kendra was in a bit of a daze. She had not seen this series of events playing out this way. Firstly she thought it was over when she had him pinned to the floor. Some agent she was. Rookie mistakes were for rookies. Not for someone who went by the name of Nightmare. Still, Kendra was not aware that her AV world counterpart was vastly stronger than her. Nightmare could do things that Kendra had never dreamed of doing. Pun totally not intended. Though Kendra's ability had limited usefulness she had always found a way to make it work for her. She had also been brushing up on the art of hynosis. She wondered if self hynosis was possible. And if so, if a hynotized state could trigger her dream walking. There was no question in her mind that she had to train to become better. Though, she only wanted to live her life. Now she was arresting count Dracula on a subway. It seemed as if trouble always found her. She wasn't that hard to find as it turned out.
Kendra was hurled off the man and suddenly he was picking her up the way a father holds a toddler. It was a little demeaning. She felt like a child in that moment. Without realizing it she was even kicking her feet like one trying to find footing on a ground that was out of her reach. When he set her down, Kendra puffed up her lower lip and blew a huff of air that shot her bangs out of her face. There. Tantrum complete. She thought. All that was missing was her arms crossed over her chest.
That didn't matter much longer. As the woman was on the attack again. Kendra watched with fascination as mental constructs came out in different colors and patterns. She was honestly having a bit of trouble figuring out exactly what her power was. Whatever it was it was varied and useful. She seemed to almost have a mastery over it too. Like she knew the full extent of everything she could do. Kendra had been dream walking for most of her life and she knew she could teleport, she knew she was invisible; but beyond that she had not a clue. There were so many unanswered questions to be discovered. Like what if she fell asleep while she was dreaming. A dream within a dream. She had seen that movie inception. And then what if.....! Oh crap! She slapped herself lightly in the face and blinked her eyes a few times. This was no time to get sidetracked and go off on a rant.
When her mind came back to the present the woman was wrapping Robert up in a neat little bow for her. She even.... Pulled his pants down? She looked up at the woman with raised eyebrows. Confused as all hell until she told her to shoot him in the butt. Oh, um.. Okay then she thought. Pulling her gun back out she reloaded. "Hasta-la-vista baby!" She said quoting the terminator. She did feel like a badass as she pumped the final round into him. The count was down for the count. He slumped limply to the floor. And suddenly there was applause? For a moment, a very brief moment Kendra thought it was a studio audience clapping in a sitcom. She thought she spaced out again. That little nap on the train had been the first time Kendra had slept in two days. There were bags under her eyes. She looked like she desperately needed to make friends with a pot of coffee, or a pillow.
But she was smiling. She was pretty proud of herself. She realized that the clapping was actually the people on the train. They were applauding their heroics and Kendra only reveled in it for a moment before she was checking on the woman on the floor. She moved the woman's hand away to see and the punctures were superficial. It could have been a lot worse if he hit a vein with those weird fangs of his, but it had already stopped bleeding at that point. At first it had been a lot of blood, but now the woman was already on her feet. "So... You still probably need medical attention." Kendra was telling her as the train came into the station. The train stopped and the doors opened. Kendra wasn't surpsied to see paramedics waiting. Someone on the train had called. Told them what the train was and what the next stop was. And here Kendra was thinking that all New Yorker's cared about was the Mets.
Turning around after she passed off the injured lady to the paramedic Kendra eyed the woman who had called her Nightmare. She was determined to play along with this and find out more about this woman who apparently looked like her. At least looked like her enough to be mistaken for her. "Need help with this one?" Kendra said helping the woman hoist the man to his feet. She made sure to intentionally give her eye contact. Kendra wanted to see if there was any informatoin to be gained from the other woman's facial expression. Besides, it had been weeks since she had work. Freelance photography was a good job if you wanted your dream job. It was a lousy job if you wanted to pay your rent. Maybe, just maybe she had found a new career. Turns out she wasn't half bad at it.

So many things had happened in the span of a few moments. Kendra's mind was racing just to keep up with all of the details. First off, this lady wasn't a doctor. She was an agent. And she thought that Kendra was an agent as well. Nightmare? She allowed the name to resinate within her. It was kind of badass actually. The inverted horror version of her own identity. She had to stiffle a laugh though at the idea of being anyone's nightmare. Kendra usually wouldn't even hurt a fly. It just wasn''t who she was. She would protect herself, maybe even stand up for those around her, but she didn't go looking for fights.
"Yeah.... I uh.... just so happened to be on the scene" So far she wasn't living up to the name much. Clumsy, aloof. More of a distraction than a force to be reckoned with. When Robert sent Kendra's new partner flying, she was caught by a cloud of what? Semi transparent mystery stuff? Kendra raised an eyebrow. Okay so she was definitely a mutant too. Kendra straightened her posture. Blinking her eyes a few time and trying to recompose herself. Agents were cool under pressure. While that didn't necessarily define her she could play the part. "Last chance Robert. I don't give second warnings. If your next words aren't I surrender. You're going to be in a world of pain."
Kendra had moved close enough to the tranquilizer gun during all the talking to gracefully, unnoticeably, bend down and pick it up. She held it behind her back. "You okay agent?" Kendra asked without turning to look at her. Her eyes were on Robert. Not only was he strong but he moved quickly. Taking her eyes off of him would have been a big mistake. Kendra stood with her feet slightly apart. One hand dangled by her side. The other behind her back gripping the trigger. She also had her police baton. Kendra could hold her own in a scuffle. She had picked up some tricks over the years."
"Spirit. You vill do my bidding. Hurt this one!" Robert was still playing with his ouija board. Well, she warned him didn't she? Pulling the gun she shot a dart into his neck. There asshole. How do you like being bit on the neck? She thought bitterly as suddenly there was a metallic snick. In her hand was her metal police baton. She rushed at Robert who was wrapped somehow in his own cape. She slid on her side like a baseball player flying into second base. She hooked the baton on his ankles and yanked as she slid past. Robert's feet were yanked out from beneath him and he landed on his face with a bouncing thud. Kendra didn't waste time. She had no powers while she was awake. She had to act while her window was still open. She jumped on his back and pressed the end of the baton into his back trying to pin him there. "You have the right to remain medicated. Maybe you should take the hint. It's okay people...." Kendra said addressing the other subway patrons. "We got him...." She said forgetting already about his super strength.
Kendra was in no shape to fight herself. Her back was screaming at her and her head was woozy. The clone was fast. He scooped up her body and said run, but what he really meant was fly because he was gone! Kendra had to teleport to keep up. Though, blinking to new locations was difficult. She kept landing way off the mark of where she wanted. As the blood started to pump harder in her body her head pounded. Her vision doubled again. Do I have a concussion? She thought. She felt a sick feeling rising in her stomach. She couldn't even offer a loook back over her shoulder to see how the fight was going. She hoped that the cold guy kicked his ass.
Kendra teleported rapidly. BLINK BLINK BLINK BLINK. Each time she felt closer to throwing up until she actually did. Her stomach was doing cartwheels in her throat. Breakfast came up. A super fruit smoothie and some crackers. She wasn't the best at taking care of herself. As Kendra's astral form leaned over and vomited; her body threw up as well. You're not supposed to move someone with a head injury. But it was better than being murdered. When the ice clone guy slowed and put her down again. Kendra walked over to her body. She couldn't afford to teleport. There was nothing left in her stomach to come up, but it was a sick feeling just the same.
"Thank you." She said out of breath. "I'm Daydream." She said offering her hand. When he didn't take it right away she reached out and took it's hand and shook it. She really did appreciate the heroics, but she was hesitant to just offer up her name to a stranger. It was something she had learned. Being careful that was. She wasn't always that way but lately a lot of crazy things had been happening. Kendra realized she was still holding the mirror. She put it away. Crouching she gently began trying to wake herself up. Shaking herself by the shoulders until she began to stir. As her eyes cracked open astral Kendra disappeared.
Kendra leaned up and looked around. She was fully awake now. Her head still hurt but at least the double vision had subsided. Kendra reached into her jacket and grabbed her collapsible police baton. She thought about joining the fight, but in her current state she would only get in the way. She would let the stranger handle the danger. He seemed capable of taking this guy down quickly. Kendra's fingers fell away from the baton and she just sat back on her hands on the grass. Her camera hung around her neck, though she didn't want more pictures. She just wanted to know that the ice man would win and be okay. She'd feel awful if someone else got hurt because of her.

Kendra watched from behind the tree. She was still taking pictures. She wasn't taking them with the intent to sell them to her magazine. They could take a short hop off a big bridge. She was documenting the heroics. She had dealt with mutants. She had even almost become an X-man at one point in her life, though that was long behind her and almost might have been a bit of a stretch. Kendra however, had never seen actual heroics up close in a live situation. They were all simulations and hypotheticals. She had been in some scraps herself, but never had a hero stepped out of nowhere to save her like a damsel in distress.
A part of her was really taken aback by this. Surely had nothing to do with the man's very ruggedly handsome face. Surely not at all. She snapped a few more pictures watching the ice man and his unreal power. She watched him make two of himself and suddenly one of him was placing a cool hand on her head. She felt his touch on her astral skin. It was dampened, as all her feelings in this state were, but it was soft and tingly. It made her coo a bit. She closed her eyes and nestled the air embracing the touch, from behind the tree where no one was physically touching her astral form. It was weird, granted. And if she hadn't been invisible she would have looked quite silly. Kendra never thought about that stuff. She spent a good portion of her life invisible to other people so she had little in the way of self consciousness.
Clearing her throat and recomposing herself Kendra made a sour embarrassed face just the same. She ignored the fact that a handsome guy was coming to her rescue and checking on her at the same time. Not many people like us that can be in two places at once. She thought musingly. She watched the big guy become annoyed. Obviously he wasn't used to people telling him no. It seemed like he was much more used to people telling him "Please don't hurt me!" Instead.
The man finally dug the tranq dart out of his shoulder. He looked at it a moment and then tossed it away. "Listen, Elsa. Im not going back to jail. So you need to just "Let it go!" I won't be telling you again nicely. In fact. You're starting to piss me off." Kendra could see perfectly find from here. Though she would see better from in the tree. Blinking away, an invisible cloud of red and cream colored smoke reappeared in the tree above her body. The light pink aura around her skin brightened vibrantly as she smirked. Only the smirk did not last. The man shot an energy beam that went wild. It was thrown with haste and anger, or maybe a warning shot. It struck the tree with a blunt force. It was light energy but it seemed to hit like a physical blow. It didn't cut or burn it bludgoned. Interesting. The whole tree shook. Kendra almost fell out of it onto handsome guy's head.
Blinking away again, this time she landed right beside her body. Right beside the man. She didn't have time to slow walk someone into the realization that she was real, and she was there and she was a mutant in trouble. She pulled out a pocket hand mirror from her bacck pocket and opened it. Angling her reflection so so the man could see her face in the invisible floating mirror. The mirror was just barely small enough to fit into her back pocket; so the resulting reflection was enough to see all of Kendra's face. It floated by the clone. The mirror itself was invisible like Kendra's astral form but her face floated there in front of him anyways. "Hey, honey. I thank you for com'in to my rescue'nall but we gots to move my body before a tree falls on it. I'm too heavy to lift ma'self." Kendra wasn't even sure if he could hear or understand her. He didn't seem to be moving a whole lot. She could still feel his cool touch on her body. His cool touch on her head. "You hearin me darling? We gots to get along lil'doggy."

Transient spirit? Was he talking about me? Kendra almost wanted to laugh. She had never been called a spirit before. The laugh only lingered for a moment though before the thought sunk in. Oh wow. She had never even really thought about that. She spent so much of her life in forced astral projection she had never considered death before. If she ended up a ghost would she just be this ALL of the time? A free floating spirit wandering around looking for things to occupy her existence? That was a grotesquely morbid thought. It sent a shiver down her spine. Kendra's eyes refocused and she looked back up at the man.
He was clearly off his meds like the doc said. Kendra's eyes shifted over to who she assumed was the doc. She seemed to be what, his therapist? His case worker? Either way she had her hands full. Kendra, who's name implied her overthinking, had begun to daydream. A whole slew of thoughts rushed into her sleep deprived, addled mind. She pictured the woman before her in a doctor's office. In front of a white board with different colored markers on it. She was scratching at her chin thoughtfully while her team sat patiently, eagerly at a glass table behind her. She was wearing a white doctor's coat now and a stethoscope. On the table was one of those old fashiony black docto's medical bag's Kendra's imagination did not skimp on the prop budget.
On the white board before her was a crudely drawn stick figure with pointy ears and a cape. The pretty doctor lady considered it.
"Is it supposed to be batman?" One of the other doctor's asked from behind her. "Yeah it does look a little like batman." The other doctor added in. The pretty young doctor with the white coat spun around. She had a limp, and a cane. Reaching into her pocket she retrieved a pill bottle, palmed a few and popped them into her mouth. "Don't be an idiot. It's clearly a man bat." Kendra watched this bizarre episode of Dr. House with mild amusement. Drifting away into her thoughts Daydream had began to snowball. Who else did this? Someone she had seen recently. Being an astral projector meant a lot of old sitcom reruns. She would drift off like JD from scrubs, suddenly living some wild; often ridiculous, vivid fantasy.
The doctor house woman from the subway limped over to a textbook on the table. She placed her finger seemingly at random on some arbitrary page. The exuberant look of satisfied conclusion on her face was almost comical to Kendra. "This patient is clearly suffering from a serious case of the bat shit nutsy coo-coo''s" Kendra couldn't help it she audibly giggled. She was drawn into her fantasy until she realized she was laughing out loud. It reminded her where she was. Suddenly there was a swinging fist in her face. She dodged at the last second. Blinking out of the way she teleported right into some guy's lap. "Hey what the heck?!?" The man stood up and scrambled away as if his seat were on fire. Kendra blinked a few times with her eyes. She looked around and for a moment was glad she was invisible.
Suddenly there were no Doctor's, well there was but it wasn't a tv drama. Kendra needed to help the doc out. She wasn't going to beat the guy with a riot stick. Not in front of his doctor. She put it away and got out her tranq gun instead. Leveling it. Clickety clack, clickety clack the train rolled down the bumpy track. Kendra's shot was canceled when a bump made her drop the gun. In the other car the bump knocked her out of her seat. Kendra's body hit the floor waking her. Astral Kendra disappeared.
As soon as Kendra's eyes opened she scrambled to her feet. "Frick on a stick." She exclaimed. Moving swiftly Kendra made it to the next car. She was panting and out of breath. Had it really been that long since she full out sprinted? Kendra needed to get into better shape. It wasn't like she was one of the X-men. She missed her chance to be that long ago. She had trained with a few, she had fought bad guys and even did the vigilante thing for awhile, but by no means did she consider herself a hero. Then what was she doing here? She realized she was panting and out of breath standing in front of the count and his therapist. Seemingly out of nowhere. She raised a finger to indicate she needed a moment to catch her breath. "Hang on, just gimme-gim-gimme a minute. I put a hitch'n my giddyup. Im plum tuckered." If the situation wasn't bizzare before it was now. Her heavy Georgia acent was spilling out of her as she spoke. Leaning up she placed her hands on her hips and straightened up.
She was being very 'hey look at me' about it. Purposefully. She had dropped her gun when she woke up. Meaning it had landed on the floor invisible, but when she woke up it was just lying there. She wasn't holding it when she woke up so it never returned to her body. Sitting in the floor between her, the doc, and the drac... Was her tranquilizer gun. Fully loaded with a dart that could one shot put down a gorilla. Kendra was stalling until she thought she could edge close enough to grab it without making this a much bigger problem for everyone on the train.

Kendra was looming over someone's shoulder. She was watching a man do a crossword puzzle on the subway. He of course did not know she was there. Her skin was soft and her touch even softer. She could have brushed the lazy comb over off of his forehead without him noticing. She wanted to in fact. It looked ridiculous, but she didn't she bit her lip as she puzzled over 14. Down. A faint pink aura enveloped her body. A ghostly glow. She of course could not be seen. Astral projection was complicated. She looked up and saw her sleeping body sitting across from the man. Her head bobbed and jostled as the train moved down the tracks. No one seemed to be paying her body much mind except the skater boy sitting near her who seemed to be trying to look down her shirt. Kendra scowled and squinted her eyes. Behind her was an air conditioning unit. A steady cold breeze pushed out of it. Kendra stepped in front of it while eying the man. Her astral body felt the cold in a dampened way. It was like feeling the wind blow through a thin blanket. Her actual body felt the cold as if she herself were standing in front of it. It only took a moment or two and her sleeping body instinctively bundled herself in her sleep. Curling more into a comfortable, warmer position; denying the peep show.
There she thought with a satisfied smirk. The skater kid lost interest after that. Kendra was invisible to everyone on the train. She hadn't meant to fall asleep here actually. She was just overworked and under rested. She figured catching a few winks wouldn't hurt. She wouldn't wake feeling rested but it was something. Kendra turned her head back and realized the guy was actually filling in the answer. She frowned at his chicken scratch handwriting. What did that say? Dagulia? What the hell did that mean? Her thoughts were momentarily stolen away she heard commotion at the other end of the train car. Kendra BLINKED. A short range dream teleport. She crashed into the vertical bar in the center of the train. The train had bounced as she reappeared and she lost her footing for a second. Her forehead smacked the pole with an audible THWUNG! It sounded like deep vibrations moving through a tuning fork. "Jiminny Christmas!" She exclaimed holding her forehead. She forgot she was supposed to be invisible. Her voice came seemingly out of no where, but this was New York, only a few people even bothered to look up.
She had to be more careful. Kendra was a clumsy girl by nature. Usually her teleport was perfection. She could move like a ninja and feel like a badass. But she never tried it in a moving vehicle before. She bit her lip and considered. Better not do that again she thought. Pushing her way through the crowd she was careful not to actually touch anyone. Except the guy standing in the center while she passed smoking a cigarette. As she went past she plucked the cigarette out of his mouth and threw it down before stomping it out. "Smoking is bad for you!" She scolded him. He looked around confused and a little worried. Kendra was not some badass. She was just a girl alone in New York. A girl without much of a place to fit in. She didn't have a purpose, heck she didn't even really have a plan beyond pay rent and try not to embarrass herself.
Kendra moved into the next car. The doors seeming to open and close on their own. Again, no one seemed to notice or care. That was the one good part about New York. People seemed to let you blend into the background. Everyone was was more wrapped up in their own lives to care about their fellow man. It was almost sweet. Kendra's eyes quickly scanned what was happening. There were people screaming and pushing backwards. Trying to give the chaotic scene a wide birth. There was a woman on the floor holding her neck. And a man hunched over her. "Hey!" Kendra called out. She didn't have much of a plan beyond that. He casually looked back at the direction of the voice over his shoulder. He would not see her. Could not see her. A train car away her body still slept peacefully. If anyone bothered her body she would feel it in her astral form. If she got hurt in her astral form, her body would develop bruises and cuts to correspond.
The man stood up and looked around at the terrified civilians. "Which one of you blood sacks said that?" He asked in a absurdly calm manor. Kendra didn't like the fact that he had blood on his face. This guy was starting to freak her out. Suddenly she slapped the palm of her hand on her forehead. Dragulia. I got it now. She thought. She almost smiled, the way you do when you remember why you had walked into a room when it was on the tip of your tongue. The smile quickly faded. Anxiousness slow danced in her eyes. She flexed her fingers and reached into the inner lining of her jacket. She grabbed the collapsible police baton she carried and snicked it open with a flick of her wrist. Since it was on her person when she fell asleep it too was invisible. She was just a light pink aura visible only to her eye. Outwardly there was no one there to address him though a voice came back anyway. "The one who's going to send you back to Transylvania, or sesame street. Or wherever you came from." She wasn't usually one to get cocky, but she didn't like the idea of this guy's smugness. She had the clear advantage. There was no reason to be afraid.

What Kendra did not know was that she had angered the man. He was, in fact a dangerous fugitive. She had accidentally taken his photograph and he had noticed. He was here for something. What that was Kendra did not know. She hadn't even really seen who hit her. Her mind was a fuzzy haze that seemed to jump from one thought to the next. One moment she was reaching in her pocket for her cell phone and then the next she was trying to remember were she was. A thin trickle of blood dripped from the back of her head. Kendra could feel the wentess there. Reaching up to the back of her head she hissed. It stung and when she drew her hand away her fingertips were stained red.
It was hard to make sense of it all with the screaming and confusion. People were panicky idiots by nature also. They panicked when things went off the rails. Things were going off the rails now as more light flashed across the sky. Kendra looked up, willed her eyes to focus on anything but only saw blurred lines weaving in and out of shape. Her vision was doubled and suddenly there was a handsome face above her asking her if she was alright. "Huh?" She somehow managed. Kendra was loosing consiousness, and fast. Kendra nodded to answer his question. Her tongue felt heavy in her mouth which was suddenly devoid of spit. The last of her saliva was running down her chin with a faintly pink tinge of blood. Oh god am I seriously fucked up? She thought dazedly to herself. Then she allowed her eyes to close.
Her head fell in the dirt and her breathing was shallow and hard.
Suddenly she was outside of her body. Standing over herself. Well, it's official old buddy put my lights out. She thought. Kendra took stock of things. She was wearing exactly what she had been wearing when she passed out. A black leather jacket and a pair of jeans ripped at the knees. On the inner lining of her jacket was a tranquilizer gun on a shoulder holster and a collapsible police baton. Kendra pulled the tranq gun and shot the scary guy with the weird powers. The dart buried in his shoulder but he didn't seem to notice. Really getting a good look at him now she realized just how big this guy was.
When Kendra astral projected whatever was on her person at the time became invisible in her dream state, just like she was. She could only be seen in reflections. She could only be noticed if she picked something up in the world that she hadn't already had on her. She stashed her gun and grabbed her sleeping body. She began to drag it away behind the tree that she struck. She had to get her physical form to safety. Her eyes kept glancing back between the handsome stranger and the danger stranger. Kendra's physical body seemed to float. She was pulling herself by grabbing under the arm pits. Her arms kind of hung in the air like she was a sleepwalking zombie, scooting back on her butt by unseen forces. "Don't worry about me! Take care'a that creep!" She instructed. Her dreaming voice had a slight echo too it as it carried on the soft breeze. She didn't know Sam, or why he wanted to help, she thought he was outmatched, but that wasn't her immediate concern.
After she stashed herself Kendra looked around for her camera. It had come out of her hand before she passed out so it was clearly visible for all to see. She teleported too it. Using her dream teleport to blink to the new location; Kendra picked up her camera and blinked away back to her body. Back to safety. She could feel her head pounding as the danger stranger began to speak. "Walk away pal. My business is with the girl. Not you. No need to ruin that pretty face of yours."
Kendra felt bad for getting this guy involved. She didn't know why the guy had a problem with her, but if he did it was her problem to deal with. She had dealt with bullies, before though Kendra did not usually think of herself as much of a fighter. She was capable under the right circumstances, but in order to gain any confidence she had to think. She had to clear her head. Her physical body had taken a blow to the head and back. Both were throbbing in her astral form. It was hard to focus, hard to think with her pounding migraine. Just run away she thought. He won't be able to see me and you can just get the heck outta here! Kendra thought quietly. She forgot about the camera she was pulling up to her eye taking pictures with. The handsome hero vs. the big bad mutant. At least she could get some good pictures out of it. Kendra hadn't seen Sam use his powers. Hadn't even had the focus to take notice of his ice armor or the frosty mist around him until she saw it through the camera lens. The camera lens always brought things into sharper focus. Who the heck is this guy?!? She thought taking a few pictures of Cold Steel; thinking now he may not be as outmatched as she thought.
