CharacterPersonality: [UPDATE:1/23/2017]Once a shy, meek girl, Rebecca has developed into a confident, clever young woman. Her time in the states awoke a sense of confidence in her, leading to less second-guessing and self-doubt. She is not afraid to "flaunt what she's got," be it her mind or her appearance. Her competitive nature has only grown, and she'll vocally stand by her own opinions and even take some pleasure in argument.
Rebecca is currently at a point in her life where she is struggling to find a direction. Her ambitions of becoming a writer are still there, but her comfortability has opened the possibilities of a more performance-oriented career path, as she's spent some time developing herself as an internet personality and has lent her voice to small projects that have gained cult followings.
There is a paranoia Rebecca has been struggling with since her run-in with a mutant known as "The Ragman" that left her in a pocket-dimension, doing long-standing damage to her psyche. She has regained most of her mental stability, but she is incredibly cautious out in public, and can be found looking over her shoulder constantly. Upon her return to America, she went so far as to apply for a license to carry; even as a mutant, she is of the opinion that a young woman could "never be too careful."
Hobbies/ Interests: Besides Rebecca’s love of soccer, Rebecca keeps a small notebook with her with pages of poems and stories.
Job or part time job and description: Rebecca is pulling herself in every direction, taking on the role of English Teacher at the Xavier's Mansion, Running the Internet Vlog "Pixel Hearts," and has occasionally done some voice acting work when the opportunity arises.
Fears/ phobias/ concerns: Her parents were always loving, but their high expectations and rules created a fear of disappointing others, especially her parents. Besides this, she has an irrational fear of needles.
Special talents: She is a talented athlete on the pitch and her poetry certainly shows potential.
MoralityGood/ bad/ neutral/ other: Becca is ultimately good, wanting to believe in the good of others and above all hoping to protect people who are innocent or redeemable. She does believe some people are beyond redemption and, ultimately, she will prioritize the safety of people she cares about over the "greater good."
Feelings toward Mutants: Becca remembers being a mutant and, more importantly, she remembers the struggle of her daughter and her students. She is a vocal advocate for the mutant cause, even if it is no longer her cause.
Feelings toward Humans: Like with anyone, Becca believes people are mostly good, and she believes they are progressively getting better. Unfortunately, they have also shown her extremists with enough power and influence on the masses to fully trust the humans who stay silent on marginalized groups.
Feelings toward Adapteds: Adapteds are uniquely placed in the world; they could use their powers to be a blessing or a curse to mutants. Becca will judge them based on those actions.
MagicArcana Praeditus: Metation
Arcana Initium: Evocation
Preferred Foci: Runes, Glyphs, and Potions
Rebecca is most comfortable using magic to imbue traits to objects, potions, and parchment. She will prepare magical items and potions to be ready for what may come.
Magical Theme: Enhancement Charms
Snap Spell: Protection Charm: Using a runic inscription, Rebecca can imbue something with increased protection. This can ward an area to discourage intrusion, create a more localized barrier, or imbue an item with heightened endurance when attacked.
Fighting StyleExplanation: With significant time since her old teacher's lessons, Rebecca's fighting style has changed. To keep sharp and in shape during her time in the UK, Rebecca took up kickboxing, but since her return, she has made a habit of sparring and training with Jorge. Through her training with him, she took to boxing. Jorge tells her that her boxing style is that of a "swarmer."
Rebecca has also put in time practicing with the shield Cafas styled for her. Using her powers, she can throw the shield and maneuver it on the fly for a ranged attack. At close range, she uses it as an extension of her arm to add to strikes or deflect attacks, modifying the lessons in deflection she once learned with her bracers.
Pros for fighting style: Rebecca's Her fighting style involves getting in close and applying constant pressure. She is nimble enough to duck and weave up close and her footwork is improving. She can mix up punches and kicks to keep foes off balance, and with her shield, her punches move slightly slower, but carry a heavier impact.
Cons for fighting style: Fighting up close is a great way to catch a few hits to the jaw, so fighting in close is usually reserved for situations when she cannot keep someone at a distance with her powers. Her fighting style requires a lot of energy and intensity, making it exhausting as a fight goes on.
As Jorge explained, while her style is a great way to deal with an opponent who is trying to keep distance and fight selectively (out-boxers,) she is susceptible to fighters who plan to fight with powerful, aggressive blows (sluggers) since her fighting style is far more likely to keep her in range of taking their heavy strikes.
History Of Your CharacterRebecca’s life began in the town of Paisley, born as a UK mutt to her Welsh/Brit father Garrison Grey and her Irish/Scot mother Mackenzie McIntosh. Her life was plain and uneventful for the most part. Some of the pure Scottish girls teased her for her mixed blood, but Rebecca was always polite in retaliation, and as such was generally liked by most of her classmates. Her parents pushed her to succeed, but were supportive and praised her often as their beloved only child.
Rebecca enjoyed her quiet life, diligent with studies and sports, never very concerned about a lack of romance she barely noticed. (Her only kiss happened at fourteen on a bus ride with her soccer team when she was dared to kiss her friend Bethany. She blushed with a heat hotter than the sun and remained awkward for the rest of the trip.) She had her friends and the companionship of her kitten, Domino, and that was enough for her.
It was at a sleepover in her friend’s house that her mutation manifested. Two of the other girls were juggling a soccer ball back and forth in the room, despite timid objections by Rebecca, (which gave way to teasing criticism of their technique.) The ball bounced astray, knocking a large trophy off a shelf above Rebecca’s head. The metal trophy dropped toward her, and she covered her face with her arms in a panic. Surprisingly enough, nothing struck her, so she uncovered her face, assuming the trophy missed her. To Rebecca’s surprise, the trophy was levitating over her. (With this realization, the trophy was released and fell, hitting her shoulder.)
The other girls screamed and started calling Rebecca a mutie, and the freckled girl ran away to her home. She locked herself in her room, refusing to tell her parents what was wrong. It was not until the parent of the girl hosting the sleepover called Mackenzie that she discovered what happened. To Rebecca’s surprise, who assumed her parents would be ashamed, she was met with love and support from both parents. It was agreed by the three that Paisley might not be the best environment for a young mutant, and Rebecca had just outed herself, so hiding was out of the option. They researched options, and eventually, a school in America turned up. Despite Garrison opposing the idea of sending his daughter off stateside, it was decided to be the best option and Rebecca was sent on a plane to New York.
[UPDATE:1/23/2017]After graduating from Columbia University, Rebecca was accepted to the Creative Writing Master's program at Oxford. After a difficult conversation with Agnes, her girlfriend encouraged her to pursue the once in a lifetime chance. They decided it would not be wise to try carrying out their relationship overseas and that if they truly were meant to be, they would reunite one day. She returned to the UK, taking a temporary leave from the X-Men to continue her education. She kept in contact with Agnes, but contact grew less frequent until she finally realized she was not hearing back at all.
After her graduation, Rebecca returned to New York, where she was surprised to realize she felt most at home. Unfortunately, that sense of "home" was hurt when she realized that, despite doing her best to look up her ex-girlfriend, Agnes more or less vanished. The temptation to chase her down was strong, but that would have been selfish of her, and Rebecca had been far too selfish in their relationship. Instead, Rebecca was going to develop her own life in the city, and if an old flame ever returned, she would be the complete person that flame deserved to rekindle with.
[UPDATE: 8/14/2021]Rebecca's wild twenties were a few volatile years of self-discovery, questionable romantic decisions, and inter-dimensional doppelgangers, the returned X-Man eventually settled into her own. She emerged as a team leader alongside Mirror, with whom she developed a stable relationship. The two got married and welcomed two daughters into their family, one adopted Atlantean daughter named Kalos and a newborn baby named Iris, born to Rebecca.
After a power growth left Rebecca's magnetic abilities wild and uncontrollable, she took a break from fieldwork. During this time, another family revelation arose when her mother confessed to giving away her first daughter for adoption.
Aoife Ainsley became a quick part of her sister's life, developing a special connection with Kalos. Unfortunately, she used this connection to lure Kalos and Rebecca into her magical trap. Seeking to invite her family into The Welldrinker Cult, Rebecca's X-Gene was neutralized, and in an effort to find a way to protect Kalos and escape, Rebecca imbibed of the Well, becoming a Mystic.

Vanessa Berry Sample RP:Rebecca gathered her suitcase and backpack and did her best to locate the place she was supposed to be picked up by someone from the school. She had not even seen the city itself, but the hustle and bustle of the airport was already a major change from Scotland. Everything was so loud, and the pace of everything seemed quick. It was all intimidating and certainly lived up to conversations about New York girls used to have back home.
Not home… this is home now. The thought left Rebecca with a sense of loneliness. It was not just her first time living away from Scotland, it was her first trip of any kind away from her parents. She was given a cell phone and a card with international minutes by her parents so she could call whenever she needed to.
She finally found the pick-up area with people holding signs for their arrivals. A quick scan revealed that she had beaten her ride to the destination. She propped up her suitcase and sat down on it, pulling her phone from her sweater pocket. After some playing around with the features of her first cell phone, she called her parents.
She listened to the tone until her mother picked up, and Rebecca instantly smiled.
“Hello mother, mah plane landed… Yeah, it’s verra different… Naw, ah’m nae ower nervous… Thank ye… Ah will… Tell faither ah said hi… Ah love ye, too… Bye…” She hung up the phone, brushing a tear from her cheek. It was unbecoming to introduce herself to New York by crying in the airport.
