The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

”Well I hope not because like you said, you’re wearing heels and while the terrain wasn’t all that bad I think you definitely would have had some issues. Getting back out wouldn’t be all that easy either.” Tarin said with a nonchalant shrug. It had all been a matter of convenience to him and something easy help with.
Lee confirmed that they weren’t quite in the right place, and since there wasn’t any path here and the ground was a bit more wild than even the last place that they’d stopped, Tarin followed as Lee led him around a few more trees and right up to the edge of the water.
Tarin stopped dead in his tracks at the sight and just kind of stared, ”Oh my god…” he said, looking down at the water, and then back up at the skyline. The lights from the buildings were reflecting off of the water and creating a mirror image that made everything look so close. At the same time though, it was so quiet.
”This is…yeah, wow.” Tarin almost whispered, as if he were afraid to break the silence.

As Lee led them the very short remaining distance to 'her' spot, Lee discovered for sure that Tarin had been right; the ground really wasn't all that bad, but she was having a bit of trouble with it because of her heels. Walking all the way in and out of there on her own two feet that night would not have been easy.
"Normally, I hate being carried," Lee whispered as she came to a stop as the view came into sight.
She had been planning on saying more, but the thoughts were momentarily wiped from her mind. It was amazing here during the day, quiet and peaceful with a good view of the Lake, but this just went beyond.
After a couple minutes of just looking out at the water, at the building lights beyond the park, at the reflections, the darkness, Lee finally turned to look at Tarin with a happy smile. "Thank you,"

It was hard to know where to look. The water was absolutely still because it was a still night and it was almost like the buildings were dropping down into the lake from the shore line. It was almost a bit disorienting until Tarin looked down and could see the water gently lapping against the shore. From there, Tarin looked up, eyes following the lines of the buildings up into the sky. He couldn’t help but think how incredible it would be if they could see the stars. Suddenly, Lee’s birthday request made a lot more sense.
Lee spoke, thanking him and Tarin shrugged again, ”I’m glad you’re happy.” he said, and that reminded him about what Lee had said before.
Normally she hated being carried? Tarin frowned a bit at that revelation as he looked over at her. How was this just now coming up? Tarin knew that he’d carried Lee before, granted for much shorter distances and they’d been far too distracted to break things down. Had she hated it though?
”Why don’t you like to be carried?” Tarin asked softly, a few moments later, glancing back at the trees ”Maybe we can figure something else out to get back.”

"This is wonderful," Lee said, still looking up at Tarin with a smile. "I don't think I would have ever come out here myself at night."
Then Tarin asked why she hated being carried. Though her smile disappeared, she was simply thinking rather than upset. Lee knew she hated it, but Lee didn't think she had actually thought about the reason before.
"Everyone assumes I can't take care of myself because I'm small," Lee explained after a few moments. Tarin had seen that with her siblings. "Being carried…it makes me feel helpless, and I hate it."
The feeling wasn't helped by the fact that Lee had been carried, on more than one occasion, when she actually had been helpless: carried to Robert's place practically unconscious with a concussion and broken collar bone, carried out of Anton's 'house' when she barely had the energy to call for help nevermind stand on her own…
"I don't think we need to figure something else out, though," Lee continued as she looked up at Tarin. "Like I said, it really wasn't actually that bad. Not this time."

”It really is pretty amazing.” Tarin said with a smile at Lee, then looked back out over the water and closed his eyes for a few moments…just to hear the silence.
Lee spoke and Tarin opened his eyes again, looking down at her. It was a lot darker here, but there was enough light from the water and across the lake that he could see that she was no longer smiling.
Tarin hadn’t ever assumed that Lee couldn’t take care of herself…he’d had an object lesson in just how capable Lee was incredibly early in the time they’d known one another and he’d never forgotten that lesson. Lee’s siblings were bad about underestimating her though, and Lee being unable to find someone to spar at the gym had been the catalyst for Tarin finding Tony for her to spar.
Still. It bugged him that she hadn’t ever said anything before.
Lee pointed out that she didn’t think they needed to find another way to get back because it hadn’t been all that bad when Tarin had carried her out here and he smiled a little as he looked down, ”I’m sorry I didn’t realize before.” he said, ”Thank you for telling me.”

As Lee looked up at Tarin in the dark, in the quiet, the stillness of this spot, telling him about how she had always hated being carried, she realized something.
She had already told Tarin that him carrying her to this spot hadn't been that bad despite her general feelings about being carried. It hadn't felt great because the idea had been uncomfortable.
Lee had only actually been carried like that a handful of times before. And she had hated each of those times, with one exception. And that time she had been carried, a much shorter distance, had only been acceptable, alright, because of the unique situation.
Tonight, with Tarin carrying her through the dark between the trees, had not been such a special, unique time. And yet, Lee had been alright with him carrying her.
She hadn't hated it.
"It's ok. Why would you have thought of it?" Lee said when Tarin apologized. "How often do grown women get carried?"
Standing there, Lee reached a hand out to grasp Tarin's. And, Lee realized, she felt safe as she stood there looking up into Tarin's eyes. It was too dark to see the colour, but Lee knew that they were the same green as some of the leaves on the trees around them.
She felt safe, but not just because of her powers and what she knew she was capable of. But more than that, Lee realized that under the initial discomfort, Lee had felt safe and protected as Tarin had carried her.
Safe but hadn't felt helpless.
How could she feel helpless when Tarin had never once doubted what she was capable of? If anything, Tarin thought that she was more capable than Lee herself believed.
"Next time we come out here," she finally said, her voice still soft to not break the silence of the night. "I may need to wear heels again…"

Lee asked how he could have known and Tarin shrugged a little bit. There wasn’t really any way he could have known unless Lee had told him. It was fair to say that grown women didn’t often get carried, but it had been known to occur on occasion.
When Lee took his hand, Tarin turned slightly so that it was easier to look down and into her eyes. Tarin couldn’t tell what Lee was thinking, but she didn’t seem upset or anything so he smiled down at her a little bit.
Then Lee spoke and Tarin tilted his head slightly. Hadn’t she just said…?
Tarin really liked the idea of a next time out here, but why would Lee want to wear heels again if it was hard for her to walk through the trees?
Had she changed her mind in the span of that few minutes? ”Sure, if you want.” Tarin said, turning a bit more and reaching out for Lee’s other hand, “But it’s okay if you don’t too.”

When she had taken Tarin's hand and looked up at him, he turned more toward her. And they just stood looking at each other in the darkness while she thought.
When she did finally speak, Tarin took her other hand and she smiled up at him. "I know I don't have to if I don't want to," Lee told him, the smile still on her face. "But I think it would be ok. No. I think I might like it the next time, too."
Giving Tarin's hands a quick squeeze, Lee stepped closer and stretched up to give him a kiss. "As long as it's you out here helping me get through the trees with heels on."

She had changed her mind. Tarin almost asked Lee what had caused her change of heart, but she was still speaking and as she did a slow smile spread across his features. Not only had she changed her mind, but she thought she’d like it?
Lee stepped closer to him and Tarin leaned down a bit to meet her halfway for that kiss.
As long as it was him helping her get through the trees? ”I’ll be here to help as long as you want me here.” he said, and he meant it, but then he grinned.
”Especially if it means more of this view. Maybe we can even scrounge up enough layers this winter to see it in the snow.”

Tarin leaned down to meet her for the kiss, which made it much easier. But when he spoke, Lee's smile turned into a happy grin. "You know, that could end up being a very long time," she told him as she gazed up into his eyes.
A very long time, because Lee currently couldn't imagine that she ever wouldn't want Tarin around.
But then Tarin took a turn to grin randomly, and Lee was about to ask him when he explained to her what he was thinking.
There were spots along the paths that if you caught them at the right time after the right snowfall that looked absolutely magical. Lee could only imagine what this spot would look like.
"I'll use my Canadian snow knowledge to help you bundle up for it," Lee said playfully. "And then we can go home and warm each other up."

A very long time? Oh, Tarin really liked the sound of that. Tarin also really liked the way that Lee was looking at him and he just looked down at her and and sighed a happy little sigh as he looked into her eyes there on the side of the little lake in Central Park. ”Good.” he said softly and simply.
As for the lake in the snow, Lee seemed to think her Canadian DNA gave her special knowledge of the snow and offered to help him bundle up if they made the trek out there in the winter. ”If you can find clothes that I can move in that will also keep me warm…then I’ll know you’re magic.” he said, because he hated looking like the car tire mascot simply to survive from November to March.
As for the rest, ”That idea might just make me a fan of New York winters…” he said, leaning down for another kiss.

It was quiet enough that when she told Tarin she might want him around for a very long time, she was able to hear the happy little sigh that Tarin let out. It was such a sweet, cute, happy sound that Lee couldn't help but smile wider as she looked up at him.
His soft little 'good' was pretty incredible, too. It didn't matter how much Lee thought Tarin felt the same way, hearing him say it…Well, it was both reassuring and made her feel all warm and fuzzy.
But it seemed that of all the things about her that Tarin could have doubted, it was her Canadian-ness, and knowledge of how to stay warm in the winter.
"You know, that sounds a little like a challenge," Lee mused playfully. "I'm not sure if you noticed this or not, but I can be a little determined when I decide to do something. I can also be a little competitive.
"So, this might be the warmest winter of your life, Tarin."

Tarin didn’t doubt Lee and her instincts, he didn’t doubt that one tiny bit. He doubted his ability to handle the cold. In the past, he’d only really left the shop when absolutely necessary during the coldest months of the year. Tarin hated to be cold and never could really manage to find a way to stay warm.
Lee seemed to be up for the challenge though, and she pointed out that she had a tendency to sometimes be a bit determined when she decided she wanted to do something.
”I hadn’t noticed that…not at all.” he said diplomatically and actually laughed when Lee said it might be the warmest winter of his life. ”I’m taking that as a promise, and if the clothes don’t work, I get to choose how to warm up.”

Lee laughed. She knew Tarin knew that she could be determined. He'd said at one point that it was a Smith family trait. But Tarin had played along with her playful tone.
And her accepting what sounded like a challenge was now a promise? To make sure that Tarin started warm all winter?
No pressure.
"You get to choose?" Lee questioned, the playful tone still in her voice. "Want to know a good way? Hot chocolate and blankets. Very cozy on a cold day."

Lee thought that hot chocolate and blankets were very cozy on a cold day. She was probably right, and there had been plenty of days when it had been snowy and windy that Tarin had just stayed in the back of the shop and never even opened the blinds. He’d just huddled in his blankets and thought about spring.
Cozy wasn’t the word that Tarin would have used to describe it, but there hadn’t been hot chocolate or Lee in that scenario.
Blankets, hot chocolate, and Lee sounded like and absolutely incredible way to spend a cold day, ”That does sound cozy…” Tarin said thoughtfully, ”I’ll take it under advisement when the time comes.” he said with a small grin.
Reluctantly pulling his eyes from Lee, Tarin looked back out over the water for a moment , ”It really would be even prettier out here in the snow though, or with one of those fogs or mists you were talking about earlier”
Tarin sighed again, this one louder than the last, but just as happy”Thanks for showing me all of these places. Now I’ll know what you’re seeing, at least some of the time when you have to go and run.”
