The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It really did sound cozy the more that Lee thought about it: being curled up on the couch with Tarin, and blankets, and a hot drink. But there was no need to rush toward winter as, just without the blankets, that was often how they spent weekend mornings.
"IF the time comes," Lee stressed with a smile. ""Remember, determination."
Tarin was thanking her for showing him these places she'd discovered, but his last comment caused her to look up at him in slight confusion. "You're welcome," Lee replied with a smile despite her confusion. "But if you were curious about that…you know you could have asked or something, right?"

Tarin shook his head and laughed when Lee stressed the if part of whether or not he’d get to choose how they warmed up. It appeared that Lee really was going to take this as a challenge. Tarin knew he was probably going to lose, mostly because he kind of hoped he was going to lose. If he lost, he might actually be warm in that winter…but either way it was fine, Tarin had a feeling this was one of those things where losing wasn’t really a loss.
”I’ll try to remember it’s a competition.” he said.
Lee looked confused when Tarin pointed out that now he’d know what she was seeing when she went for her runs, ”I mean, I knew in a general sense where you go since we’ve talked about it before. I’ve just never spent much time out here at night…so now I’ve kind of seen it from your point of view. That’s all.” he said. It really wasn’t something he’d even thought to ask or talk about until they were standing here.
Speaking of which, Tarin couldn’t help his eyes from drifting back to the water and the skyline. There were lots of views in New York City that were considered iconic, but he thought that maybe this one was the most unique he’d seen to this point. ”I just can’t get over the reflection…” he said, then just stood in silence for another few moments until a thought occurred to him.
”Did we give Rachel a time?” Tarin asked, knowing very well that he had not, in fact, done so himself.

As Tarin explained what he had meant about being now knowing what she saw some nights when she was out running and she smiled. Lee didn't think she had ever really thought about anything in that way before, but it was a nice thought. Especially as it was something he wouldn't have ever really seen without this walk that night; he didn't go running at night, and if Lee did, it was almost guaranteed that he needed to sleep.
"If I remember the next time I see a mist or fog around here, I'll get some pictures," she told him. "I won't be as good as in person, but better than nothing?"
The reflection of the buildings in the water really was amazing. "If you had wanted to go that far, I was going to show you the reflections in the Reservoir," Lee said, her smile wider as she looked up at Tarin. "But I didn't know we'd see this here. But the Reservoir isn't nearly this quiet. This is better."
Did they give Rachel a time that they would be home? Lee thought for a moment. She didn't remember hearing Tarin tell her a time. "I didn't know exactly what was going on tonight," Lee reminded Tarin. "So I didn't. Did you?"

The next time there was fog or mist Lee would take a picture? Tarin nodded, the idea was a good one, and while he didn’t know if it would be as impressive as the view on a clear night like tonight…it would definitely be cool to see.
Lee pointed out that the reservoir also had pretty reflections, but that it wasn’t nearly as quiet there and Tarin shook his head, ”I like the quiet almost as much as the reflection.” he said, glancing down at Lee.
It didn’t seem that either of them had given Rachel a time that they’d be back. ”Whoops…” Tarin said with a slight smile, mind still on the silence out here and meandering towards another train of thought.
”You know, for a long time I didn’t know if it’d ever be quiet again.” he said, and meant it. ”For ages, wherever I was, it was like they just knew and they’d gather more and more as time went on. There’s only so much you can ignore…I couldn’t focus, was jumpy all the time, almost never slept…” he trailed off and shrugged.
”Ultimately I couldn’t figure it out on my own, and nobody knew how to help, so that’s why I left. I’d heard somewhere that there were people in New York who could help, and if not that, then there were at least more people who would understand.”
That had gone well. But. He had learned, and things had gotten better while simultaneously getting much much worse. Now…he didn’t even have to think about it most of the time, not even when he slept.
”Weird tangent, I know, but it just made me think…”

When Tarin commented that he was enjoying the quiet just as much as the reflection, Lee nodded. "Me too," Lee murmured as she stepped closer to Tarin, leaning into him. It really was remarkable, and incredibly nice, with how peaceful this little spot in the middle of the city was.
And, it turned out, neither of them had given Rachel a time that they would be home. Oh well. She had their phone numbers if she needed them home.
Lee didn't give that much more thought as Tarin started talking about how he had not had quiet once his powers emerged. And while there was no way for her to know what it had been like for Tarin, she knew enough to have a very good idea of what he had been through. It was hard for her to believe that now there just were never any spirits near him if he didn't want them to be there.
"I wish you hadn't had to deal with all of that," Lee whispered as she wrapped her arms around Tarin. "Especially not on your own."

It had been a really good night, Tarin didn’t want to bring things down, but it was so easy to think and talk out here. He also knew that Lee understood how hard it could be to talk about things like this, so when she wrapped her arms around him, he did the same and sighed a bit as she spoke.
”It’s not like nobody tried…they just didn’t know what to do with me.”
”I didn’t go to doctors like you did, but they tried things like sleeping meds, which worked because then I slept…but I still had nightmares.” They hadn’t really been nightmares, he’d figured out later, but the result had been the same and he hadn’t been able to wake up.
”School sucked, it started to get rough for my brothers too, because of me... My Mom did her best, but it was a lot...”
The words trailed off and Tarin just stood there for a few long moments, staring out at the view, arms wrapped around Lee and holding her close.
”It just made sense to go” he said finally, ”But it all worked out eventually….”

"I know they did," Lee said gently. "And I know they loved you, I'm sure they still do. But that's not always enough to not feel alone."
When Tarin mentioned that they had given him sleeping pills because the spirit induced nightmares had kept him awake, Lee squeezed her eyes closed and hugged Tarin tighter. That must have been horrible. To have been trapped asleep for hours seeing the images from all the spirits around him that night…
With how hard it would have been for Tarin, how hard it would have been for his family to be able to help without actually believing what he said, with the threat of SUPER…Lee could understand why that would cause a 14 year old Tarin to think it made more sense to leave. Especially if there was a chance of getting help.
"I'm glad it has worked out. But what I wouldn't give if it meant you didn't have to go through all of that…"

Lee seemed to get at least some of what he was saying on a deeper level than he had explained and Tarin wondered if this was one of those things that he had in common with the Tarin on this side of the rift. If so, it was a few kinds of bullshit that these were the consistent things.
Did they still love him? Did that even make sense? Tarin didn’t like to think about the possibility because if that was true it meant that all those years that he’d been gone maybe they’d thought he would come back. Maybe they still thought he would come back and that just seemed cruel.
Lee’s arms got tighter around him and Tarin shook his head as she spoke. It was just a phrase, Tarin knew, but it made him wonder what he would give up for none of it to have happened. It was the kind of thing that Tarin couldn’t even wrap his head around. It would have been disingenuous to say that Tarin wouldn’t have changed anything, especially considering the fact that he wasn’t the only one who had been hurt by the things that he had participated in and the things that he had done.
Still though…
”But I’m here now…” he said softly, ”And I wouldn’t change that.” It was a selfish thing to say, and maybe a little over the top, but the fact of the matter was that they couldn’t go back and change things and maybe because of everything he’d been through and everything that had happened, Tarin deserved this.

If it were somehow possible to spare Tarin the worst parts of the early years of having his powers, what would Lee not do? What would she be willing to give up?
If it meant that things hadn't been so difficult for Tarin, if he would have been able to sleep without spirits invading his mind, if he had felt like he could stay at home, with his family, pay the age of 14…Lee would have willingly stayed herself. Because as horrible as being relegated to her room had been, how difficult trying to function with such little energy was…
All of that was so much easier to deal with than what Tarin had been through.
And Lee would gladly have put herself through years of that if it had meant Tarin hadn't had to suffer through his powers like he had.
But none of that was possible.
All that Lee was actually able to do was be there for Tarin when he needed it and do what she could to make the future, for both of them, better.
When Tarin spoke, Lee pulled back enough to look up at him, but kept her arms wrapped around him in a high. "I'm glad you're here now, too," Lee whispered as she looked up at him in the dark. It was certainly better than him being on that island. "Even if it did take us 6 years to get here."

All of those bad memories seemed really far away as Tarin stood there with Lee in the middle of Central Park. Her arms were tight around him, and Tarin just kind of leaned into the pressure of the hug, closing his eyes again for a moment.
Lee pulled back a bit, and Tarin opened his eyes as she spoke, smiling a little as she said she was happy he was there…even if it had taken six years for them to get to this point.
At that, Tarin chuckled and shook his head, ”I don’t think you had an empty room at that point…” he said. That was a better thought than what had actually brought them together. ”And you didn’t know how much you liked the Mets…”

Lee couldn't help but laugh when she heard Tarin, easily the loudest sound of the last few minutes with how softly they had been speaking. "You do make some very good points there," she said after a moment.
Leaning back in again, Lee rested her head against Tarin's shoulder as they stood there. "I guess it's a good thing in some ways that we didn't really waste any time, isn't it?" Lee asked, still laughing slightly. "Though, I don't think it would matter how much time we could give it, I never would have realized that about the Mets without you."

They really hadn’t wasted any time when it finally came down to it. Tarin hadn’t thought about it much because in the grand scheme of things it didn’t matter, but things really had escalated quickly between him and Lee.
Lee didn’t think she’d have ever appreciated the Mets if it wasn’t for him, and Tarin just had to laugh again as she rested her head back against his shoulder. ”I didn’t think you’d ever like the Mets with me.” he said, still a little surprised he’d managed to manifest that into being.
”We can stay here as long as you want, but is there anything else you want to do before we head home?” Tarin asked after a while.

Lee laughed again and shook her head slightly against Tarin's shoulder. "Is that so?" Lee asked. "Because you always seemed so certain about getting me to like them. I fought against it and pretended not to like them trying to not prove you right."
They then just stood there in silence for a little while and Lee closed her eyes as she stood enjoying the silence as she relaxed in Tarin's arms. It was so quiet and peaceful here that a part of Lee didn't want to leave at all. But she knew they would have to at some point, sooner rather than later. "Maybe next time we should bring a blanket," she mused instead. "That way we can sit and enjoy the view."

”I don’t know if you have noticed, but I have a pretty good poker face.”
It was funny to Tarin that Lee had actively pretended to not like the game for so long just to avoid him being right. Maybe he didn’t stand a chance this winter.
Lee suggested that the next time they came out here it might be a good idea to bring a blanket and Tarin nodded, ”And more appropriate clothes.” he added.
It was tempting to just shrug out of his jacket and lay it on the ground for them to sit, but Lee’s dress was probably about as conducive to getting on and off the ground as her heels had been for walking through the trees.
”I’d really like that though. Maybe we can find one of those nights when the moon is really big…”

Had she noticed that Tarin had a pretty good poker face? Lee definitely had not consciously noticed that Tarin had a good poker face. Possibly because she was actually able to read him so well. Even sometimes when others couldn't even tell that there was something going on with Tarin.
Though, Tarin was able to keep his face quite relaxed and neutral when they were fooling around and saying ridiculous things. "I'll have to remember that about you," she replied.
And more appropriate clothing? Yeah…That would probably be a good idea. Even though Lee had mentioned hearing heels again the next time that they came out here so Tarin would need to carry her again, Lee could at least pick something that wasn't 'dress code fancy' restaurant to wear.
"Oooh," Lee sighed. "That would be amazing." They couldn't really have stars to look at, not in the middle of New York City, but a giant moon reflecting with the buildings in the lake would be a nice consolation.
Then a crease formed between Lee's brows as she looked up at Tarin again. "How do people know if the moon is going to be big like that without simply just seeing that it is that night?"
