The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

After the gym, and the subsequent stop for ice cream even though Lee didn't end up needing the energy boost thanks to Tarin, the rest of the weekend had been pretty quiet. Tarin had helped her to stretch out both of her shoulders, which had actually helped them both to feel better. Lee hadn’t actually realized until they had finished how tight and sore they had actually been.
Sunday had then been quiet. Lee had taken Kevin to the Park to get him out of the house because with the exception of the trip to the gym, all he seemed to want to do that weekend was be on the computer.
Then after dinner, even Tarin had disappeared to his room, leaving Lee alone in the living room.
With nothing to do.
So she ended up curled up on the couch reading, wearing a pair of light grey pyjama pants and a grey shirt.
After a while (an hour? Two?) Lee headed into the kitchen to do any leftover tidying after the weekend. It wasn’t too long after that when Lee felt someone approaching. Looking over, Lee saw that it was Tarin. Then had to look again to make sure that she was seeing him right.
Not that the jeans Tarin had worn during the week had been bad, but this pair he was currently wearing were the nicest that she’d seen on him. And instead of his normal t-shirt, he was wearing a nice looking, navy blue button up.
Lee had no idea why he was so dressed up. Unless…he had said that he had been trying to meet people and get out of the shop. He must have a date tonight, Lee realized.
And was surprised by how that thought upset her.
Then Lee noticed the look on Tarin’s face. Guilty and apologetic. Like a golden retriever puppy who’d done something wrong and knew it.
“What’s up?” She asked, her voice a little hesitant.

Tarin Brooks was in trouble.
Tarin Brooks was in huge trouble.
Tarin Brooks was in the kind of huge trouble that people sometimes didn’t survive, and it was completely his own fault.
Rachel had burst into his shop the preceding Friday like the absolute hurricane she was and announced in no uncertain terms that he was going to be taking Lee to an open mic night on Sunday. Rachel had kindly left it up to him whether or not he told Lee ahead of time, but things had been…complicated and Tarin hadn’t found the right time to tell Lee about the trip out.
So. He’d done what he’d been really good at the last few days and when he couldn’t handle the anxiety of the whole situation any more he’d ran to his room and hid until he’d realized that Rachel would be there soon and would absolutely be expecting him to help convince Lee to actually leave.
There was some sense, he decided, in just waiting until Rachel arrived. She would handle things and then he and Lee would go or not go. But then Tarin had remembered what had happened when he’d just dumped Robert in Lee’s lap and ran off to hide Friday night. Ultimately that had been…fine…but Lee had been so upset.
So. With about 15 minutes to spare, in case Lee wanted to get herself dressed instead of Rachel forcing her into clothes, Tarin prepared to meet his potential doom.
He’d gone pretty casual for the night, owing more to the fact that he didn’t have many dress clothes and those he had seemed wholly inappropriate for the occasion. The shirt was a simple navy button up and he’d picked a much nicer and well cut pair of jeans than he’d usually wear. Belt and shoes were brown and…he really couldn’t put this off any longer.
So. Out to the kitchen Tarin went, where Lee was cleaning something up. She realised he was there before Tarin could say anything and he could tell by the look on her face that she could tell something was wrong.
“So.” he said, suddenly not sure what to do with his hands as he talked and decided just to shove them in his pockets so he’d stop fidgeting with them. “There is something I didn’t tell you on Friday. With Robert showing up and…everything it slipped my mind, and then we got busy with the gym and everything yesterday…and yeah. So.”
This was going beautifully. Tarin wondered what would happen if he ran back to his room. A perfectly reasonable action for a man of his age.
“I had a visitor to the shop Friday. Rachel in fact.” he said, then took a deep breath. “Annnnd she convinced me to help her kind of con you into going to an open mic night tonight. She’s going to be here in fifteen minutes to help you get ready and watch Kevin and I should have told you sooner and I’m sorry.” It all came out in a rush and Tarin stood, awaiting his doom.

Lee just looked at Tarin as he seemed to get even more uncomfortable. But why would he be uncomfortable about telling her that he was going on a date? Unless he was planning…
Oh…
Lee had not thought about that before, and she felt a weird little twist in her stomach at the idea.
But finally Tarin was speaking and it…did nothing to explain what was going on or why he was looking the way he was. At least not until he got to the point where he said that Rachel had been in his shop on Friday. Lee heaved a sigh, an exacerbated expression on her face that said ‘she didn’t’.
When Tarin finished speaking, Lee simply shook her head for a moment. Lee wasn’t happy about this, but if Rachel had shown up at the shop to get this in motion, Lee knew that she couldn’t blame him for this. “She’s apparently not a mutant, but that woman sure seems to be able to get people to agree to things they otherwise never would.” Was she happy about this? No. Did Lee want to go out? No. But was she mad at Tarin about the situation? No…Rachel would have probably been around all weekend trying to convince him to do this if he hadn’t given in.
Lee shook her head again at her sister’s audacity in the situation. “But thanks for the heads up. Normally I find out she wants me to go out when she’s already in my closet tossing things for me to try on.”

The anger that Tarin was braced for didn’t appear. In fact, Lee just seemed…resigned. Rachel had said that she’d done this before and that usually Lee gave in with quite a bit of grace, but seeing it happen made Tarin feel even worse about the whole thing. Still, he let the breath he hadn’t realized he was holding out in a relieved whoosh.
“That woman is a force that cannot be reckoned with.” he said, “And she has very impressive lung capacity because I swear to God she doesn’t stop to breathe when she speaks.”
Lee went so far as to thank him for the heads-up and Tarin actually winced a bit, “They already signed you up to sing too…” he said, “But I don’t think you actually have to do that.” he added, “In fact, if you don’t want to go at all but you don’t want to fight with Rachel, we can go hang out at the shop, or anywhere really.” he offered helpfully. These had been all of his backup solutions to throw up if Lee had been furious.
“I really am sorry, I don’t think she was going to take no for an answer.”
Why was he such a nervous wreck? Lee had already made it clear that she wasn’t angry with him. Still, the nerves hadn’t faded and he had this nervous energy that made it hard to stand still.
“I can let her in when she gets here if you want to go…”

“They?” Lee questioned as she shook her head. “Damn it, Rachel.”
Tarin went on to offer alternative things they could do instead of going to the open mic night if she really didn’t want to go, but didn’t want to go, but also didn’t want to fight with Rachel. Lee couldn't help the smile that came to her face as she looked up at him. “Thanks, but if we tried that, Rachel would know about it tonight, possibly before we even get back home. Her and Matt are dating, and she’s probably expecting him to send her updates tonight.Which I doubt he’ll actually do, but he would let her know if we never show up.”
Lee just sighed and shook her head. Rachel was absolutely relentless. “I doubt she would have,” Lee agreed with Tarin. “And you thought I was stubborn. I think Rachel learned from her older siblings and then multiplied it.”
Shaking her head again, Lee smiled up at Tarin. “Make sure to let her stand in the hallway for a few minutes first,” Lee said, her tone partially playful, but with a serious note. “If I can find something she thinks is appropriate fast enough, maybe we can get tonight over quickly.” Giving Tarin another smile, she walked past him toward her room.

Ah, so the Matt that Rachel had mentioned and the Matt that Lee had mentioned were the same people and Matt was dating Rachel.
Matt was a brave man, and Rachel would be expecting updates.
Good lord, the woman was an actual hurricane.
As for Rachel and her stubbornness when compared to Lee, Tarin shook his head, “You’re both equally stubborn in completely different and infuriating ways.” he said with a smile that did not reflect the nerves he could not seem to shake.
As for his offer to open the door, Lee wanted Tarin to make Rachel wait a few minutes before letting her in. He was tempted, but also afraid she’d kick the door down or pick the lock or something to get inside if he waited too long. No, better to open it in a timely manner, he thought as Lee smiled at him and then made her way to her room to get ready, leaving Tarin alone in the foyer of the apartment.
This whole thing was a wild idea. What was Rachel expecting Matt to send updates on? Their arrival? Lee getting on stage? How many guys were hitting on her?
There was also the fact that Lee was treating this like a chore, hopefully they could get it over with quick? She obviously didn’t want to go…with him…to this bar, so they’d go, they’d get the whole thing over with, and they’d come back. That part was easy enough, Tarin supposed.
But then there was the fact that they were going to a bar. The last time Tarin had been at one of those had been just a little over a week ago and the end result had been catastrophic. It wasn’t the same bar, it wasn’t the same people, and it wasn’t going to turn out the same way…but maybe that was why he was so damn nervous about this entire set up.
Precisely on time, a knock sounded at the door. Lee hadn’t re-emerged from her room yet, so Tarin crossed the space between where he’d been standing and the door and pulled it open to reveal Rachel.
“She knows, she wasn’t all that pissed, and she’s getting ready.” Tarin said by way of greeting as he stepped aside to gesture to Lee's sister to come inside the apartment.

As Lee made her way to her room, she thought about what she could wear. The fact that the bruises on her back were still visible did limit her options, though. At least they had faded to mostly yellow shades, now. But with Tarin being there, Lee wasn’t about to let them be seen. Plus, she didn’t want to have to explain them to Rachel.
And, Lee realized as she looked through her clothing, she had very little that she felt was bar clothing that also covered both her back and upper arms. Hopefully, this wouldn’t be an issue again in the future, but Lee made a mental note to get at least one or two more shirts that would cover more in case her sparring ever left more bruises than normal.
It really didn’t take long before Lee heard voices. Well, Tarin had said Rachel would be here in 15 minutes when he’d come out of his room.
---
“Well hello to you too, Tarin,” Rachel said as she stepped into the apartment as Tarin stood out of the way and started making her way to her sister’s room. But then she stopped when she realized what the man had said. “You told her, and she’s still getting ready?” She asked, a smile on her face. ‘Man,’ Rachel thought. ‘She does actually like him.’
Rachel didn’t really wait any longer than that before continuing on to Lee’s bedroom. “Oh good, you’re not dressed yet. Out of the way, let me see what we’ve got here.”
“You do realize that I’m capable of dressing myself, right?” Lee asked as she grabbed one of her few nicer looking shirts that had sleeves out of the closet.
“Sure you can, sweetie,” Rachel replied, eying the shirt that Lee held before pushing her way in front of Lee’s closet.
As Rachel began her search, Lee pulled off her t-shirt so she could start putting on the clothing that she had chosen. And was just shrugging the blouse onto her shoulders when she heard Rachel’s exclamation. “Oh my god Lee! What happened?”
Pulling the blouse the rest of the way on, Lee started to button it as she turned around to see Rachel holding a red dress with spaghetti straps and a low enough back that would display just about every single centimetre of the bruises. “Like I said, Rach, things were rough last weekend,” Lee explained, her voice calm and factual. “I’m fine, but I am not wearing that tonight.”
“Well obviously. You’re not wearing that either.” Rachel said as she turned back to the closet to search again.
---
Forty five minutes later, Lee emerged, having both dressed and done her hair to her sister’s very demanding standards, as well as having done her makeup. She was wearing a white short-sleeved blouse and a black skirt paired with some black mary janes with a three inch heel. “Am I acceptable, Rachel?”

Tarin shrugged when Rachel seemed surprised that Lee was still getting ready, “I mean yeah…it’s only been like ten minutes…” he said, but Rachel was already heading off down the hallway.
Tarin had only gone to a single dance in his youth, an 8th grade mixer right before he’d skipped town for New York. His mom had dropped him off to get his date and waited in the car for them to come outside. Tarin had walked himself to the door and promptly waited for an indeterminable time for the girl to finish getting ready and come outside.
That was the closest he could describe to what he was feeling right now. It would have been funny if he hadn’t been such a mess inside. This wasn’t even a date. It wasn’t like he’d asked Lee to go out with him, he was just there, by Rachel’s design, to be a buffer in the situation.
Still, after the way the last few days had gone…Tarin didn’t know what to think.
Friday night had been an exercise in self control he hadn’t realized he had, Saturday at the gym and the rest of the day had been easy enough, up until Tarin had had to make good on his promise to help Lee stretch out her back and shoulder muscles. That had been an exercise in mixed feelings. Despite Lee’s insistence that she was fine, she still wasn’t and it was like a punch to the gut every time he realized just how bad things had nearly been that night in the shop. Besides that, being that close, having that much contact, even as necessary to help had been difficult in an entirely different way.
Now, Lee was spending a bunch of time getting ready for a night out that she hadn’t really agreed to until she’d been under extreme duress from her sister and someone would be at the bar providing updates on just how everything was going. It just didn’t set right.
Rachel emerged after a while, and Tarin made painful small talk while Lee finished getting ready. Soon enough she emerged from her room and asked Rachel if she was acceptable.
Acceptable? Um. Yes. Acceptable was one word, and Tarin just slowly took in the outfit, and Lee from head to toe, completely heedless of whether or not she noticed.
Suddenly, he wanted to be out of the apartment. “Ready?” he asked.

When Lee came out into the living room, Rachel stood up, her arms crossed as she looked at Lee with her head tilted slightly. “Passable. Really, Lee. You need to let me take you shopping some time. Soon.”
Lee just rolled her eyes at her sister. But then she saw Tarin looking her over. Not in a way that she was going to be looked over countless times in the hours to come at the bar. And though Lee wouldn’t have been able to verbalize how it was different, it caused a slight flush to cross her cheeks.
Hearing Tarin ask if she was ready, Lee nodded, already turning toward the entryway to grab her purse and keys. “Yeah, I’m ready,” she said, then turned to glance at Rachel, hoping that blush was off her face. “We won’t be late.”
“Don’t you dare watch the time!” Rachel replied. “Sarah is perfectly capable of opening the boutique if I need to sleep in. Just have fun!”
“We won’t be late,” Lee repeated as she shook her head at her sister again, only waiting long enough for Tarin to make his way closer to her before she turned to leave the apartment and make her way into the hall.

Right. She was going to an open mic night. That she was already signed up to sing at.
She sighed, setting her purse and keys down before making her way back into the apartment to grab her guitar. Normally, she just left it out on its stand in the corner so it was easier for her to just grab and play when the mood struck her. Picking up the nearby case, Lee packed her guitar away and made her way back toward the door once it was closed.
“Alright, are we ready to go now?” Lee asked, setting her guitar down briefly to grab her purse and keys again. “Or am I missing something else?”

Had it been the wrong call to remind her about the guitar? Tarin had seen it there, sitting in its stand against the wall in the apartment, but as far as he knew Lee hadn’t touched it since he’d been staying there.
This whole thing had been a terrible idea.
Were they ready to go?
Tarin nodded, a bit dubious about how the night was starting out. They made their way towards the elevator and the nervous energy in his chest clenched a bit at the prospect of the tight space. They weren’t too high though, and surely that wouldn’t improve things, so he took a deep breath as the doors opened and gestured for Lee to go through. He only hesitated for a second before he followed her in.
”I don’t care how annoyed Rachel gets, if you don’t want to do this, we can turn around and go back home…” Tarin offered, trying to distract himself from the fact that the elevator seemed to be moving down the stupid shaft at a glacial pace.

Tarin didn’t look very…eager or impressed when she asked if they were ready to go. But he didn’t say anything, he just nodded. And so they finally left the apartment, hearing another call of “have fun!” as they left.
Tarin didn’t actually say anything until they were in the elevator, though he was looking uneasy as they went in. “No, it’s ok,” Lee said, smiling up at Tarin. Not nearly as far up now that she was wearing heels rather than running shoes. “I’m sorry. I’m not upset or annoyed with you, it’s Rachel. And who knows, maybe we’ll have fun?”
And then he spoke again. And another blush crossed her face as her eyes dropped for a moment before looking up at him again. “Thanks. You do, too,” she said as the elevator doors opened.

Lee said it was okay, and the way she was smiling up at him, he just couldn’t help but smile back just a little despite the crawling of the elevator.
”Okay, good.” he said, ”Am I a jerk if I say she kind of put me on edge too?”.
The doors to the elevator finally opened and Tarin’s breath rushed out with a whoosh. The claustrophobia was one lingering effect of the last week’s events that didn’t seem to be dissipating as fast as some of the other issues. It was fine though, Tarin had it under control, and Lee had just said he looked nice.
”What, this old thing?” he said, with an easier smile now that they were out of the hell box.
”Lead the way…” he said as they left the doors of the building, ”Unless you want me to grab a cab to save your poor feet from walking all that way.”

Lee laughed slightly when she heard Tarin's question. “No, definitely not a jerk for that,” she told him. “Rachel definitely has that effect on people sometimes.”
Since they were talking this time when the elevator doors opened, Lee noticed the breath of relief and how a lot of the tension seemed to disappear as they stepped out. Stairs it was when they got home, Lee thought.
“Well, it’s good to know that you are able to clean up well,” Lee teased as they made their way out of the building and onto the street.
And Lee had started leading the way to the bar before she heard Tarin speak again. She had been planning on walking to the bar; she walked most times to most of the places that she went. But with the weight of her guitar case, considering she didn’t yet have the energy the bar would give her, a cab ride did sound good. And walking home would be far more beneficial for her in the long run.
“I’m not so concerned about my feet, but grabbing a cab does sound good,” she replied.
