The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

The raven spiraled down from the bright blue sky and focused on its target. A young female human in workout clothes and a blonde ponytail was slumped against a tree. She made no sounds and reacted to absolutely nothing. Her eyes were closed and her breathing was steady, but there was nobody home. Any telepath could tell you as such.
Beside her, a german shepherd sat at attention. He had a collar on, but no leash, yet he remained at the young woman’s side, moving only his head when a new sight or sound caught his attention. If anyone came too close, he was ready to growl or even attack as needed. But otherwise, he was pretty chill.
This was because he was guarding his mistress, his owner. Or rather, he was guarding her body. Her mind was currently riding inside the raven that was spiraling down to Earth.
“Shiny!” the raven cried as its keen eyes sighted something in the grass. There were a lot of shiny things in the grass, scattered all around the woman and dog. About a half dozen other ravens were there as well, picking out some of the shinies. The dog ignored them too.
Not right now, the mutant thought, her words seeping into the raven’s mind. Zorro has been waiting long enough. With a cerebral nudge, the bird tilted in air and alighted on the woman’s legs. The dog barely gave it a glance.
And then the woman opened her eyes and smiled. “Thanks for the ride,” she told the bird. She pulled the mirror from a small compact out of her pocket and handed it out to the bird. “Here you go, for your troubles.”
The bird stared at her hand and back at the woman before finally grabbing it from her and fluttering off a few feet, to investigate its new shiny. It was way better than the little scraps of aluminum foil that the blonde had previously scattered around as corvid lures.
“Well that was refreshing,” she said to her dog, reaching out to scratch behind his ears. “At ease, Zorro. Stop guarding.” At the magic words, the dog shifted, leaving its alert status and turning to lick her face. “What shall we do next?” she asked him, enjoying the steady flow of joy coming from the shiny-obsessed birds.

Bruno very rarely pulled him out of the mansion, most of the time he pulled it was because there was food somewhere that had his name on it. They were going outside, which was fine for the icemancer. He could train just about anywhere, Bruno on the other hand was about to get into something. Sam just didn’t know what.
”Fer **** sake, she’s always around!” a winged mutant grumbled as he pushed passed Sam and the dog. ”I hear any of the kids cursing like that, you and me got some 1 on 1 training.” Sam called back as the winged mutant acknowledge with a one finger salute.
The door opened, Bruno bolted and as he walked out of the mansion with his basket ball shorts and shirt flowing in the wind. The one eyed X-man looked up to the sky and inhaled slowly taking in the beautiful day.
Speaking of beautiful, he heard the call of a murder the one that didn’t make him go running towards the issue. This one he had to approach slowly. Out of all the birds in the world Raven’s were probably Sam’s favorite. If it was up to him he’d have built some kind a roost for them so they wouldn’t want to leave. It wasn’t though.
When he was younger when he was lost in the woods somewhere and didn’t have food it was the birds he listened to. They often led him somewhere he needed to be, like a river full of fish, or to another source of food. This time though it was a blonde and her dog. ”Morning.” Sam said as he slowly walked past studying the trees. ”Holding court?” Sam asked stretching.

Liz was content. Her fingers were idling through Zorro’s fur and scratching his ears as he leaned against her like the very best boy. After going on jog with her dog, she was content cooling down in the shade, letting the Zorro’s simple happiness and the ravens’ obsessive hoarding-joy wash over her like a mental jacuzzi.
As immersed as she was, she immediately felt the discordant strains of alarm, curiosity, and wariness spike in the animals. She glanced first at Zorro, who merely turned his head and twitched an ear, but barely let out a faint rumble. The ravens were more lively. Several cawed softly and startled to shake themselves and their feathers, all kinda focusing in one direction.
She trusted her dog. And so she was already waiting when the man came into view. The alarm didn’t increase, although the wariness was still growing. Well, seems like the ravens weren’t detecting anything off. The man was moving slowly after all. Liz relaxed, unaware up to that point that she’d tensed up.
“Morning,” she said in return, giving the man a level once over. Alright, back to green alert. A wave of calmness swept over the birds and she smirked. “More like trying to stop a murder from happening. Looks like I failed.” Liz laughed heartily, but the ravens barely reacted more than giving her a wicked side eye.
The man seemed to be taking his time, so Liz returned a question. “What brings you out here, this fine, sunny day?” she said, straightening up more and fixing a strap on her tank top that didn’t need adjusted.

Between the dog, the girl and the ravens there was enough thermal readings as a chill swept past them. Quite a few of ravens actually which was awesome. The icemancer’s eye shifted upwards towards the birds till he got close enough to one of the lures and crouched next to it and examined it. Sam smirked at the simplicity of it if only he knew that when he was younger he wouldn’t have had to use his compass to get their attention.
His arm loosened and he grabbed the other one waiting a moment longer till he responded afraid the birds would fly away if he started talking. ”Looks like you were trying to start one actually. Smart.” he said nodding at the foil.
”Outside? Training and an over excited dog that ran off somewhere. Over here? Appreciation for the beauty of the Corvus corax.” he said reciting the name with ease. He had none the source material on them for some time. ”Not to often you get to stumble onto a murder, better than stumbling into one though.” he said smirking eyeing the nearest bird. ”Enjoying the sun?” Sam asked making small talk.

Oh? He was willing to engage in wordplay? Elizabeth’s pleasant smile gained a dash of feral glee. “You got me there,” Liz laughed. “It took some doing. Let’s just say ravens aren’t commonly so obsessed about shiny things, or investigate them in such large numbers when an unknown dog and human are around.” Liz spread a hand to indicate the various birds and herself. The ravens were alternating between exploring for more scraps of foil and analyzing the stranger. That’s what happened when you hyped up curiosity and silenced alarm. Also, they were ravens. They were probably confident they could win in a fight.
And apparently the man had a runaway dog and was out and about to train. “They are beautiful birds, that’s for sure,” Liz remarked. “I mean, crows are fine and all, and sometimes better when I’m feeling social, but ravens just have more fun.” She smiled again. So what if she was being vague or possibly coming off as weird? She wasn’t into showing all her cards upfront anymore.
His next comment about a murder did not elicit a smile from her though. Thanking God, Liz was glad she’d never encountered that although the reptile brain kept counting how many times she could’ve been a victim. But it didn’t phase her anymore. Or at least, that’s what she kept telling herself.
Liz bent her legs and started pulling herself to her feet, pushing off from the ground with one hand. Zorro took this as a cue to splay his front legs out in a massive stretch. “Oh, the sun’s nice and all, but it’s just not the same without feathers,” she said. “It’s still pretty fun when you’re out with your dog though.” She started stepping toward the man. The two or three ravens in her way squawked and cawed in annoyance but just shuffled out of the way or fluttered off a few paces. She was still pouring out calmness over them.
“My name’s Liz,” she said, stretching out the hand that hadn’t just been on the ground. “What are you out here training for? Olympics?” The guy was pretty buff and solid looking.

”Sam.” he responded in kind when she offered her name. His eye was focused on the birds while his sixth sense was focused on everything else. He saw the woman stand and the dog take a big stretch. ”No, afraid they don’t have an event for me.” the icemancer said with a smirk.
”Self defense, discipline, whatever you want to call it. Idle hands idle” Sam followed it up this time by eyeing the woman. She seemed familiar, had they met before? He didn’t ask but rather shifted his gaze back to the birds. ”Still impressive.” he said looking at all of them. ”Mansion’s lucky if we get one or two of them at a time, you must have a way with them.”
After the dog was stretching Sam eyed the dog still fighting the urge to reach out and try to hold his fingers out for a perch, just in case the Raven’s were feeling friendly. ”Handsome dog, haven’t seen him before. What’s his name?”
He gave it a second, ”Now that I think about it. Not sure I’ve seen you here before either. Just move here?” he asked slowly pulling a leg back as to not startle any of the birds.

“Yes and no,” Liz responded merrily as Zorro came up beside her, leaning against her legs and sniffing curiously at Sam. There was a lot of curiosity boiling up from the dog, undoubtedly from whatever he could smell. Liz didn’t bother trying to dampen it. She was curious too.
“This here’s Zorro,” Liz said, indicating her very best boy. “We just moved in a couple of weeks ago,” Liz explained. “I’m the new biology and science teacher. But l used to attend here my last several years of high school so I’m not super new to the mansion itself.” Liz stepped away from Zorro and whirled gently in a circle, causing her ponytail to flail around and the ravens to protest even as they backed up a couple of paces. “And it’s taken me the whole time I’ve been back to lure all these beautiful birds here. Oh, to be an actual siren!” Only the slightest trace of a Jersey accent leaked through.
Liz planted her hands on her hips and watched Sam’s particularly slow movements. Was that tai chi? Curious. An inkling of an idea was forming, connected to his discipline and self defense talk.
“So what about you, Sam? Been here awhile, I take it?” she asked, her head cocking to the left, not unlike some of the ravens. She hadn’t seen the man yet, although it wasn’t too unsurprising considering the size of the school and the amount of people who lived and worked there. She felt she would’ve recognized a big guy like him, especially with an eye patch like that.
She cocked her head to the other side and then began to roll it. There was a slight kink in it from when she’d been possessing the raven. Besides, she was thinking it might be a good idea to do some warmup stretches as well. All part of that inkling of an idea.
The ravens were still aloof. Zorro was making his way over to the guy’s feet. There were some amazing smells there!

Lowering his hand as the dog approached he made sure not to give the dog eye contact. He knew dogs and he knew better to try and challenge one in front of his ‘mom’. They had just moved in and she was a new teacher. Not only that she was a student here before. Sam knew she looked familiar. Maybe she had taken one of his classes before? Unfortunately his classes weren’t mandatory to the curriculum despite all the kids running into some trouble at some point in their lives.
Sam smirked when she asked if he had been here long. ”Little more than a decade.” he laughed and formed an ice cube in his hand and tossed it near Zorro wondering if her dog was into ice cubes as much as his. ”Some could argue too long.” he was one of those people on occasion.
”I’m sure will be seeing more of each other. I’m a teacher here too.” not that they’d ever teach in the same hallway but more around the water cooler in the lounge that he occasionally stopped into. ”More my classroom though.” the icemancer said gesturing to the outdoors. It was hard to teach ‘real life’ encounters in a classroom.
”Did you take one of my classes when you were a student here?” he asked curiously waiting for the approval of Zorro before doing anything else.

Ice formed in Sam’s hand and interest formed in Zorro. His eyes tracked it as it flew and once it hit the ground, it was his. The canine lunged forward to sniff the moving object and then picked it up in his mouth. He dropped it quickly, but then decided he should settle down and investigate this ice. Oh yes.
“Now that’s a handy party trick. Keep that up and he’ll beg for ice every time he sees you,” Liz said with a smirk. In addition to entertaining dogs, it seemed invaluable for folks who always had warm drinks. She hooked an arm around her other arm and pulled it in a stretch. “Ten years is about when I enrolled here, actually. Small world,” she continued.
“I don’t think I ever took any classes from you,” she said as she switched to stretch the other arm. “I’m sure I’d remember the eye patch. What did you teach? Or do teach?” she added awkwardly. She was betting gym teacher. With a physique like that, the outdoors being his classroom, and the lack of gym at the school, it just made sense.
Liz checked on the ravens. They were starting to lose their curiosity. That was one of the problems with smart birds - they got bored. And although she could make them curious, she couldn’t control what they were curious about. And the foil just wasn’t doing it anymore. She relaxed her broadcast. Time to let them be what they were gonna be.

The icemancer smirked, ”How do you think I trained mine? Ice is great motivator.” he said eyeing Zorro who was into the ice but not quite Bruno level yet his dog could drool.
”Shame, was going to ask what you remembered.” he said with a smirk. One of the ravens cawed and his eye shifted to it. ”Self Defense.” The first bird flapped it’s wings and flew away. Followed by another. It was silent after that for a moment. Sam added, ”Do I look like a math teacher?” he asked with a small head tilt and a chuckle.
”Eye patch isn’t that old. Just picture two of these.” he said point to his good eye. ”That happened during the Romanian camps.” he said with a little gruff still not happy to discuss what happened there. They took his eye, he could have healed it but Sam still didn’t’ feel right about doing that. His mutation adapted to cover the loss of his eye to recover some of what it lost. Some more ravens started to caw and fly away.
”Think your song is wearing off.” he said pointing with a nod to the birds.

“Silly me, I always train dogs with treats,” Liz laughed. She also tended to use empathic conditioning as well, but that was just to expedite the process. Sometimes possessing worked, but she’d learned that led to very different results depending on the dog. Transferring one dog’s memories through her memories of them into another dog just...didn’t have the same feel as a natural memory. Although when she’d trained Roger, he had mastered his drug sniffing courses in record time.
She never advertised the mental tampering though, but on occasion someone in the know had requested her to specifically do that. The blonde glanced down at her dog, who was busy gnawing and toying with the ice. She hadn’t needed to do that with Zorro though.
“Self defense, huh?” Liz said with a shake of her head as she looked Sam up and down again. “That...fits.” She hadn’t been too far off the mark, it turned out. And no, he didn’t look like a math teacher, or at least a stereotypical one. No, he actually looked like someone else, now that she thought of it. Someone else with an eyepatch, but not just because he had an eyepatch.
And Liz was not going to touch the reason why he needed one in the first place. No sirree. One did not need to read emotions to hear the warning bells in his voice. Maybe another time, but not on their first meeting.
But that inkling of an idea grew stronger. Liz reached into a tiny pocket and withdrew her last scrap of foil. It had little bits of glitter glued to it, for added sparkle power. As one of the last two ravens started feeling like it was going to leave, Liz angled the foil around in her hand until she could be certain it caught the sunlight at least once in the direction of the raven. “Alas, all good things must come to an end,” she said fondly. “I have to be careful not to try and domesticate these wonderful creatures, as much as I would like to always have a murder on standby.” The foil caught the bird’s eye finally and as soon as that happened, she blasted the bird with greed and boldness. Then she turned her head to look completely away from her outstretched hand with the foil now lying so invitingly on it.
With a fluttering and a flapping, the raven leaped into the air, beat its wings to gain lift, then snagged the foil in its beak and flew off, blasting triumph over its daring and brilliantly concocted heist as it rapidly climbed into the sky.
And the inkling fully formed. “Self defense,” she repeated. “Do you offer lessons to adults, too? I’m needing to find a new teacher since I just moved back up here.”

It was an impressive sight, he had seen Raven act boldly before if they wanted something but he had never seen one pull something from an outstretched hand like that. ”Cool.” he said with a smirk. No longer being reminded by the camps he repressed that whole situation again making sure it didn’t’ boil up any time soon. No he’d bring that up with Gemma in one of his sessions.
”Self Defense.” Sam repeated her repeated. ”I offer lessons to anyone who is willing to learn.” he said with a thumb up. He was told several times he looked cheesy giving thumbs up to people but he still continued to do it.
”I also reserve the right to stop teaching if I find out you are using my lessons in appropriately.” he said, ”It’s to help people not harm them. But as a fellow teacher it be silly not to train you. Got some crazy kids with powers right?” he said with a smirk.
”You teach me how to do what you just did with that Raven and we can start now.” he paused for a second, ”New teacher means you’ve trained before. Care to demonstrate?” his stance changed slightly and he lowered into a cat stance. Not his normal fighting stance but it was good to practice.

“Of course,” Liz said. Self defense for self defense and not offense was standard, from what she’d read. Legally, too. Liz wasn’t looking to join the military or start hunting people down, but she wanted to keep improving herself and it wouldn’t be bad learning from a different teacher who undoubtedly had a different style.
Besides, she didn’t want to always have to rely on a canine companion or someone else to protect her. And what if she had to protect the kids?
But Sam seemed to want payment for training, which was fine and expected, but he wanted to duplicate what she did with the raven? She wasn’t sure she could reliably duplicate that trick! But then she hadn’t really thought about it before. “That may be easier said than done,” she said warningly. “I made the raven fearless and greedy and gave it something it couldn’t resist. It did all the rest.” She stopped for a moment to consider. “But I might be able to teach one to do that for you. It will just take longer.”
But Sam wanted to see her moves now. Okay then. No time like the present. “We can go over the specifics after this,” she told the man. Then she clicked her tongue to get Zorro’s attention. “Zorro, go over there,” she said, pointing back at the tree. “Friends,” she emphasized as she pointed at Sam. It wouldn’t do to get her dog attacking Sam just because he was sparring with her. Zorro left what was left of the ice and immediately trotted over to the tree where he sat back down and watched. Good. It wouldn’t do to accidentally kick her pet, either.
Then Liz turned to face Sam, who had already struck a pose. She stepped forward and assumed Krav Maga’s fighting stance, squaring up, dropping her chin, and lifting her hands in front of her face as if ready to catch something or surrender. “Let’s do this.”
Liz lashed out with her right leg in a vertical sneaker-clad kick straight at Sam’s chest.

The icemancer’s smirk faded when she said it would take some work and that she could teach a raven to do what he had just seen. Bummer. It must have meant that she could influence animals. The theory was solidified when her dog did as requested from Liz. He had seen some good animal trainers in the mansion before; he counted himself among them but the way the dog trotted over and sat he was sure that Zorro was way better trained than Bruno. He probably didn’t go into attack mode at the mention of ninjas either. ”Ah” was all he could muster.
Sam was however happy he had someone to start training with today. Normally he’d push it off until it was later in a more controlled environment, however it didn’t get much safer than the mansion grounds. As long as there wasn’t anyone throwing Molotov’s around, the grounds were pretty safe.
Sam opened his arms in a stretch and closed his good eye for a moment and that was all Liz seemed to need to close the distance. The icemancer pivoted to the side of her kick and caught it in mid-air. His eye was still shut however a smirk was back on his face. ”Quick.” he said as he pushed her foot upwards and then leaned into a push forcing her to back away and catch her balance.
”Not bad on form either.” Sam said, ”How long did you train?” he asked with his eye still closed just feeling her body heat which gave a lot more information to him than just basic sight.

Her foot was caught and she was pushed back. Liz did a small hop to regain some distance andher balances and then resumed the fighting stance, left foot forward and her right further back, broadening her base. “Not quick enough,” she said wryly. Had his eye been shut? And he still caught her and pushed back. Liz had no doubt he could’ve done a number of other things.
Well it looks like I picked a good teacher. At least based on his skill. “Trained for nearly the last four years,” she said, thanking her foresight in wearing a ponytail instead of leaving her hair loose. “Made black belt in Krav Maga.” Usually she didn’t tell people that. It felt like bragging and, to her sometimes paranoid and calculating mind, any surprise could be most valuable in the right moment. But this wasn’t a street fight, it was an evaluation.
She saw his smirk and her lips pressed together. His eye was definitely closed. No time like the present to see just how outmatched she may be. “Think you can teach me to fight with my eyes closed?” she said before pouncing forward. She jabbed left, right, and followed up with a hook, her breath hissing in exhalation with each punch.
