The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Jude enjoyed telling the truth and having his life's irregularities slide under the radar, but the black eye incident stole all his smugness. That and the cat he couldn't dislodge from the toe of his shoe. That still steamed Jude. A) That it happened. B) That it had been Erik who’d been in the right place at the right time. He was trustworthy… to a point. But despite working at the same company, he didn’t really know the guy.
"Oh. You know it is a small world. Did you know I work with Erik? We don't see each other a lot, though.” He kinda wondered if Erik would even recognize Jude’s name. Jude sure recognized his. It was on every paycheck. Jude stayed in office a lot more than anyone else that worked there. That was making things quite tricky when he trekked up to the Mansion at least one a day... it really was time to get out.
”Well, clearly my taste in decor is impeccable.” Jude thumbed over his shoulder at the drooping Isabel poster.
> "Oh, Andrea brought me a phone!"
”Oh sweet. I wish I’d thought of that.” In fact, he might have just been inspired for what to do to thank the unlikely addition to their rescue party. He looked the phone over as it was handed to him. It wasn’t super top of the line, but it would work. That was the most important. He put in his number and texted himself. He picked up the bitey kitten and added it to the sleeping kittie in his lap so he could use both his hands.”Yeah. I’ll text it to you.”
Andrea continued to be embarrassed. At least, Jude was pretty sure that color on her cheeks, no matter the color, meant blushing by the rest of her body language. He was messing with his phone to get the photo to Zaid.
As far as hanging on to sentimental things… he just didn’t have almost anything that qualified. So his opinions probably didn’t count there. But somehow the biting kitty had curled up to sleep in his lap like a nice little orange and white yin yang.
Zaid wasn’t sure he was making the situation better, but it wasn’t worse. His awkwardness just seemed to give all the wrong ideas and he wanted to be closer to Jude not to reconfirm there was nothing there to be jealous over. Wait, was Jude the jealous type? Or just protective? His nose wiggled once and he wished he could tell the difference in scents between emotions. Or heck, he wished Jude had the ears right now. That would also be useful. Relationship dynamics were so confusing and he would need time to really get used to them.
Friendship dynamics also were awkward. Zaid was proud Andrea had stuck around as long as she had. He would have tucked and ran despite social etiquette the second things became unbalanced. But with things decided for now, it felt like a better parting situation. ”How about I talk to Layne when I go in tomorrow and I’ll let you know what ends up happening, okay Andrea? If it works at least you’ll know the new address then and maybe I’ll get your help at least packing my books.” when she took the opening to leave without offending anyone, he maneuvered free of kittens and embraced her in a tight hug. He even gave Sloth a friendly pat as a thank you for not trying to eat him today.
”Thank you. For coming, and the phone, and everything, really. When things are settled we will have to cook, okay?” he pulled back and scooped up the last two kittens before they could make a run for the door. He made a face as one grabbed his ear in their mouth and tried not to flinch. ”Last chance to adopt a kitten,” he smiled wryly.
She blinked in surprise, her attention shifting back to Jude.
"Oh? I wasn't aware, actually. We've only been dating for a little while and... Well I guess I never bothered to ask." She laughed sheepishly at herself. It had been a wild couple of weeks, certainly. She knew the type of work he did, but since she wasn't the one in charge of hiring security for events and such. Once he had his personal number she'd never thought to dive further into it. "Do you also work in security?"
She didn't want to try and base anything off of Jude's size when it came to trying to figure out if he did the same kind of work Erik did. It was easy this day and age to underestimate people easily with non-visible mutations. She was surprised, and a little mortified, to find out that this was Jude's room that she had barged into. Though, the decor certainly didn't scream Zaid at all. She chose to keep her comments and silent turmoil to herself, though.
She turned her attention back to Zaid, and that dear, sweet, lovely boy threw her a bone and gave her an out. She was all too happy to take it, but was careful not to let her relief show. She didn't want to insult either of them by rushing out the door too quick.
"Of course." She smiled genuinely. "I'm here if you need me, but really, no pressure." She accepted his hug and provided a tight one of her own back, before gathering herself up and getting ready to go.
"Of course, Zaid. I look forward to it!" She waved to Jude, perhaps a tiny bit shyly since he was still a new figure in her life. "Perhaps I will bring you an apartment present when you two are all settled in, if that is alright?"
The Greek snorted at him about the kittens, her heart clenching painfully at the sight of the poor homeless cats.
"Truly, I would love too. But I fear that I would not be able to provide the little darlings with all of the love that they need. If you need a place for them to go, text me and I can find a shelter to take them in, like I mentioned before."
With that in mind, and feeling much better about leaving while the mood was good, she turned and let herself out. "Again, it was lovely meeting you, Jude!"
Once she was out in the hall and the door closed behind her, she beat a hasty retreat to find Erik.
Funnily enough, she found him in the kitchen handing out treats from the cupboards to a hoard of small children. She had to drag him away toward home before he gave them all away and they both got a talking too.
"I work in the administration side of security." He admitted to Andrea's question. 'I work in security' sounded way more cool, though. He was starting to move that way with the encouragement of Alpha Team, but the truth of the matter was that BlacTac needed someone who didn't run off and do the stupid stuff, too. More and more Jude was reminded that Evelyn had seemed interested in working there...
Jude waved to Andrea and tried to be cheery as she left, but it just didn't seem to apply to him. They weren't friends and he hadn't actually been there when she'd shouted out and tried to protect Zaid. She was very self-conscious around him, the blushing said so.
Sometimes he just didn't mesh well with other people. Zaid had been a weirdly natural instant fit. Andrea felt so much less so. It wasn't that he didn't care. It was more that Zaid was allowed to make and have his own friends. They didn't all have to be Jude's friends too.
Jude trailed a stray bit of broom bristle across the floor to collectively annoy some of the still awake kittens.
Andrea and Zaid seemed so... bubbly. And Andrea did share a certain overlap with Ghost. She was clearly fond of Zaid in a mother or sistery kind of way. He was chewing on the idea of setting the kittens loose in the Mansion and just hoping for the best when the door shut behind the gorgon woman. He breathed a sigh of small relief. One less power in proximity to wear down his resistance.
"She seems really genuinely kind." Not that he hadn't deduced it from her words and said as much before. But the really genuine people sometimes seemed few and far between.
Once the door shut Zaid snuck back to where Jude was and retrieved his awaited hug, flopping next to him on the floor, wrapping arms around from the back and putting his chin on Jude’s shoulder. The two kittens he once had bounded free. He let go after a moment and sat beside him, letting one arm keep contact now. He didn’t want to be accused of being clingy, but also, it was good having him back and having a little privacy again.
”She is a genuinely good person. Even before all of this. She climbed the fire escape to my building to make sure I was okay when I hurt my ribs. We had only just met but, she has a good heart.” he lost the energy to fight the kitten returning to his tail. He doubted they would both have tolerance for long with the energetic critters. The therapy had gone well, now the bunny side was getting tired.
”Thank you for welcoming her.” it was one of those things that was hard to put into words. He knew Andrea and Jude would likely never be friends in their own. But Jude respected that Zaid relied on her and did not get in the way of that. It was a good sign to him. They each were able to be their own people and still be together in the end.
"You coulda done that when Andrea was here." He grumbled a bit, mostly because he hadn't realized how much a third person had changed their dynamic. He'd felt a bit more reserved as well. Not because of shame, he was pretty sure it was just because it seemed to rude somehow. Jude let his head tip to the side and bump against Zaid's.
> ”Thank you for welcoming her.”
"I'm not a complete heathen." He teased his boy and scooted the kittens from his lap. They blinked at being ousted from the warm and calm. "I know how to be nice to people. Also helps when they are nice and even more so when they are nice to you." He twisted around for better hug contact.
"Is it crazy to move in together? I don't want to make things awkward. What if... what if I snore too loud or you hate the way I chew? Who cleans the toilet? I haven't lived with anyone else in a long time. Living with Gwen was as good as living alone. So I guess she does and doesn't count as my last roommate." Living with Svetty was too much to explain... it had all unraveled anyway.
"You lived with your parents. And then alone, right?" Zaid's timeline was a bit more straightforward.
Zaid smirked and kissed Jude once then pointed at the rowdy kittens demanding for attention. One was attacking his tail again despite his efforts to defend it. "There was more than one distraction in the room. And I didn't want to be rude... I know not everyone appreciates PDA." He sighed and relaxed, enjoying to contact now that they were alone. "But I'm sorry, I guess I get too cautious about what people think sometimes." It was his first relationship and he still didn't understand all the rules. It was like learning a new language to him, so many things to figure out.
Zaid listened to the question, and considered it seriously. "I mean, I'm sure some people will think it's fast but, we survived being here together so far? If anyone is awkward out of the two of is, I'm pretty sure it's me." Zaid smiled. He was definitely feeling more like himself today, and it was easier to joke.
"And you've fallen asleep here before and I didn't kick you out of the room. You can't be any louder than yelling upstairs neighbors on a Friday night." He leaned back and ticked off things on his fingers that were brought up as objections. "I haven't had a problem with how you eat yet, and I'll probably clean. The worst I may do is make you take your shoes off at the door, because some habits die hard." He couldn't really imagine Jude wearing slippers around the house, but his mother would have dragged him by his ear to the street if he was rude enough to wear shoes in the house.
"And, yeah, just my parents and then myself. I haven't really had roommates. But, it would be cheaper. I probably slacked off a little living alone, but my mom was very, traditional. Clean, organized," he considered the memories fondly more than sadly right now.
"And it goes both ways. What if you get tired of having bunny ears every time you leave the house? What if someone gives you a hard time for living with me? What if you get tired of what I cook, or if you hate my taste in music?"
Yes. Jude had brought in a distraction or 7... Or, were there 8 of them? Why was he only counting 5? He had to resist the urge to go looking. They couldn't actually get anywhere with the door closed.
"You're not awkward." Jude insisted. At least, when it was just them, it always felt very natural. That wasn’t to say that he was different around other people. Probably more that he was relaxed most with Jude. That had him feeling rather okay about it.
"Ghost made us take our shoes off. Genkan or something, right?” That was a term Jude could easily agree to. There were worse things than having to wear slippers inside. "Really sounds like your mom and Ghost would have gotten along well.” He was always nervous mentioning the parents. That wasn’t a spot that might ever heal for Zaid, but it felt weird to just ignore it.
"I have to have some power in place. I’d rather have ears than something that affects other people negatively.” Jude did lean back into Zaid to consider his other concerns more carefully.
"I don’t really care what other people think. If I did, I would have lived a really different life up ‘til now. And, there’s restaurants for a reason. What if you get tired of cooking?” He fired right back, feeling more confident that they could make it work, even if it was just for a while.
"Look, my boss likes country music. You literally cannot get worse than that.” It was the best part of him being gone, honestly. Jude tipped his head back to look at Zaid upside down, curious if he’d managed to stem the stream of questions.
"Any other objections? I’m feeling good, like maybe I could take on one or twenty more.” He grinned.
Zaid took a moment to rescue his tail once more, and smiled at Jude's reassurance. It was true, he was more relaxed around Jude than others. It could have been personality, or powers, heck, even a combination of both that felt that way. It was a sense of 'safety' that he had grown to sense and put his nerves at ease. It had been a long time since anyone made him feel that way. Once, it was family, but now it was a relationship. Different, but similar in sense of belonging with someone.
Rather than looking sad, Zaid smiled at the mention of his mom, chuckling against Jude's hair. It was a comfortable, cuddly sort of position they had landed in that he didn't mind. True, there were moments he felt sad not having family around, but talking about it made it easier. They couldn't dance around the topic forever, after all. "My mom would have loved Ghost. I could see them being friends. Moving here was a big change for us and she often missed things from home..."
Zaid made himself comfortable, arms wrapping loosely around Jude. He was still smiling slightly as he continued. "My mom was very fierce for a small woman. She was strict, and honestly I feel she had more authority in our house than my father at times. She did everything with passion though: loved, hated, protected. I will have to show you photos sometime."
Since Jude never visited Zaid's house, there hadn't been an opportunity to introduce his boyfriend to his parents. Would he think that was weird? Zaid was in an awkward place between worlds, where his heart wanted to preserve some traditions, and his mind had acclimated to different thinking. It was just a photo and a shelf, but that was the little place his family had left in his life now. It was easy talking about memories, but that would be something harder to consider.
"Cooking is relaxing to me. Although it would be fun to eat out sometime anyway. It would give you the chance to eat more meat, honestly." He grinned at the mention of music taste, and tried to think if he honestly had any other concerns. "Hey, you were the one who started the 'what if' game. I feel like you're giving up more than me if we do this."
Oh? Jude had started it? "Yeah, but I hate the way I chew. Mine was a legitimate concern." He hoped it was obvious from his tone that he was teasing. Less meat. That was and wasn't a huge deal. BlacTac was one big sausage fest. Oh, and they also tended to grill meat for fun. Man bonding, or something.
Zaid readjusted and a kitten made itself known somewhere in the vicinity of Jude’s head. He just had to trust that Zaid would protect his skull from tiny, curious claws.
"I'd like to see photos. I don't have anything from my bio-parents. I'd share my Ghost with you, but she's moving, I guess. I also wouldn't call her fierce, but she's always been there, at least. No dad to speak of." That meant there'd be no awkward family holidays, right? Jude tried not to squirm as a kitten investigated the bottom hem of his jeans by popping it's head into his pants leg. "What about your dad?"
Zaid laughed. The idea that Jude hated how he chewed was something he did not take seriously for a moment. Which would have been bad if he hadn't been joking. "You have a photo of me literally cramming noodles into my mouth as your screen saver and you're worried how you chew? I have to worry I'll someday have my powers warp more and my front teeth will start growing uncontrollably, or I start growing fur! I mean, I'm cute now, but I won't look cute with buck teeth." Zaid made a face, taking a moment to stop a kitten from pouncing on Jude's face. He deposited the wayward cat onto his own shoulder, letting them watch his ears with fascination. They were going to be covered in tiny claw marks by the end of the night the way this was going. Jude would have to sneak a healing power if it continued...
"My dad...I just...I honestly never got to know him, as bad as that sounds." That was a more serious note, and it was hard to consider when the kitten was now chewing on his hair. "He worked a lot. My parents were both English teachers, but my dad was always teaching a class. His students loved him. They say he had a great sense of humor. I just, I never saw it. It's hard to get to know someone when you're always watching them leave."
When they moved, Zaid remembered seeing cards and letters from students left for his father. Zaid didn't dislike his father but they never bonded. Whether it was his mutation, or just his father's personality, or the culture. Zaid respected his dad, but that was different. And then, they died. It wasn't something he could ever go back and fix.
"The advantage of living on my own was at least I didn't have to deal with him finding out I was gay. I'm pretty sure that would have severed what tentative relationship we had." Japan was not a very open country for such things, regardless of what their art industry seemed to project. Zaid was lucky he was somewhere as open minded as New York and he knew that.
Jude cackled without mercy over the photo. Zaid couldn't hate it that much, he'd asked for his own copy. Twice, now! "I think the solution to this problem is that we need to take more photos together. I'll just zoom in on the parts I like, and you can do the same." In fact, Zaid with a kitten riding his shoulder wasn't a moment Jude wanted to forget any time soon.
"Are you really worried about your powers changing?" Jude supposed his was rather invisible. Insistent and annoying, but at least it was only that way to him.
"As if I could pass judgment on you not knowing your father." He could, however pass silent judgement on a father that prioritized everyone except his son. That was a feeling Jude knew all too well.
He hummed thoughtfully at the mention of not having to come out to anyone, judgy or not. "Did you come out to Layne?" Jude wondered if anyone at BlacTac cared. He got razzed no matter what, it seemed. He'd learned that it was all supposed to be in good fun even if they perpetually crossed lines.
All things considered, having more photos together wouldn't be a bad thing. Giving Jude that credit was too much, however. Zaid still managed to look somewhat perturbed by the compromise, even if it was easy to see the smile trying to cross his features. "I have put up with it because it's the only photo we have. And you look nice in it at least. I look like I was starved for a week and was finally given my first meal." Zaid felt his hair tugging more and more as the kitten continued to attack.
Then, instead of rescuing Jude as another feline crawled back into his collar, Zaid fished out his new phone and snapped his own photo. Jude had a face full of fur, and Zaid had revenge. Even a basic flip device like this was easy to get a selfie with, thankfully. Zaid had opted for the all popular anime wink/tongue sticking out pose Japanese Icons seemed to rock on Instagram. It was passable. Dorky, but that was what they needed. Something that didn't feel so serious and drenched in the burdens of this week.
Sitting back and holding the phone captive, Zaid tilted his head. Did he worry about his mutation? He gave a little shrug. "I mean, a little. I've had the same appearance since I was born, but I've seen a lot of mutants get more abilities as time grows on. Heck, there's this pregnant lady running around who sprouted feathers the other day. I just, get nervous that too much change all at once could ruin the things I've come to enjoy in life..." Friendships, Jude. He did have a decent amount of anxiety for one bunny.
The next question took more considering. "I think Layne sort of just, knew. I mean, after one or two girl's hit on me, it was pretty obvious. It was only the guys that made me uncomfortable." Zaid blushed. He looked down at Jude and smirked. "Although you were the first I felt brave enough to want to pursue."
Revenge was Zaid's. Why did fluffy things end up in his face so often?! He sputtered as the shutter clicked. There was no chance an up-the-nose cat-in-face picture was a good look for him. But the picture had been forewarned. Jude's only real hope was that the burner phone wouldn't have much memory for more. The frenchman wrinkled his nose in Zaid's general direction.
"Maybe someday we'll take a photo when we're both ready." Today was not that day.
Jude had a lot of unexpected feelings about what Zaid had to say. Pregnancy with mutants seemed an oddly fragile thing. Ghost had gone away for hers, coming back into Jude's life with a new, unasked for sibling. He'd never held it against Ro. In fact, he'd thought of the baby more like a trial run for what he might some day experience.
Now... fatherhood was not so much in his cards.
Mutations still were, though.
"Worry is counter productive. I get it. But there's really no point in worrying about what might not ever actually be a thing. Let's worry about what is for just right now." Like a blush and an admission.
"You stuck your tail in my face before I even knew your name." Jude teased. "I'd call that some heavy handed pursuit."
It was nice being pursued, though. "Though, my favorite part has to be when you got all flirty in front of Zee." Jude beamed up at Zaid, unrepentant. He would move heaven and earth to see flirty Zaid again.
Zaid managed to look like the embodiment of innocence as Jude made a face at him. It was as if he had not taken a cheap-shot with a cell phone and gotten away with it. He blinked his eyes with the type of adorable doe-eyed expression only a bunny could generate. "I like to think karma arrives when least expected. If you want a photo with both of us ready you'll have to play fair too."
Then he gave a wink that managed to quirk one ear. If the first look was innocent, this one would be a reminder that rabbits were also well known as tricksters for a reason. "If you call a truce I would, but until then, you're fair game."
They agreed to not worry about things beyond their control, but apparently they did NOT agree to not embarrass each other. Zaid's face turned a shade of red that reached his ears and he slapped a hand to cover what he could. "Stars, did you have to remind me of that? I wasn't, I didn't....I still feel like I got cursed into a manga page for all of that to happen."
He peeked through his fingers, although his cheeks still had color when Jude mentioned Zee. "I...don't enjoy someone who doesn't take a hint. When something is mine they better back off." Imagining the girl made his mouth pull into a frown, and he was still irritated she had cursed Jude over something so stupid. Although, it had gotten him a kiss. But seriously?
He shook his head, then laughed, lifting a kitten to the side so Jude could see without fur obscuring his vision or getting in his mouth. "If you ever really want to see flirty, wait until I've had a few drinks in me. Layne took me out one birthday and there may have been some underage drinking involved. I'm pretty sure a dance contest was instigated. Quite frankly, I am hoping no photos ever made the light of day."
