CharacterPersonality: Slow to trust after his experiences in Hong Kong Jack’s confidence in himself is gradually recovering, aided in no small amount by his mutation which allows him to avoid a good deal of consequences he would otherwise incur. As a result he doesn’t always think ahead and can have difficulty seeing things from another perspective until they’re pointed out.
He’s also something of a thrill seeker and tends to do things just for the hell of it including, but not limited to, jumping on top of trains, playing hopscotch with the roofs of passing cars and, last but not least, jumping from the highest building he can be bothered to climb. Needless to say he’s only lasted this long because his mutation lets him cheat death at the last second.
When threatened, intimidated or stressed Jack tends to fall back on a cocky or disdainful attitude generally designed to provoke regardless of whether it’s a smart move at the time. This also extends somewhat to authority figures in general as part and parcel of the rebellious teenager phase.
Overall, cocky tends to be Jack’s base state with an underlying current of affability, he enjoys trading insults not only to test his wit but also measure the character of those around him. Hormones being what they are he’s also not above flirting, poorly and outrageously if need be since, if you’ve found yourself in the grave of rejection, you may as well keep digging until you hit China.
Hobbies/ Interests: At his family’s insistence Jack has familiarity with most classical dances such as the waltz and quickstep but he tends to prefer the tempo of an irish jig; the fact it happens to provide an opportunity for drinking before during and after, is merely a happy coincidence.
Job or part time job and description: Student/Gopher for the local triad.
Fears/ phobias/ concerns:Special talents: See dancing above.
Morality Good/ bad/ neutral/ other: Neutral for the most part, he’s good in that he doesn’t like seeing people get hurt but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll intervene. Friends and family are exceptions of course but generally if he doesn’t see something in it for him he won’t help, given his thrill seeking tendencies though that can be a rather low bar.
MutationsMutation description: Phase/Dimensional Manipulation: Between one breath and the next Jack is able to slip out of the physical world to a space between spaces. This void state is both separate and part of the real world; always reflecting the physical characteristics of the place Jack just left such as buildings, roads and other static objects (defined as something that has not moved relative to the Earth for at least a month), however anything that has moved and specifically, anything alive, translates as nothing more than insubstantial black and white holograms that mirror movement in the real world and can be passed through but not interacted with. If Jack passes through the hologram of a living person they will not notice anything. Sound is still available in the void state but it is often distorted as though from an old vinyl record.
Strengths: Aside from allowing a temporary phasing ability that renders him immune to all physical harm, physics in the void state are somewhat malleable and allows a limited degree of spatial warping. For example instead of walking from point A to point B the intervening space is folded to bring A next to B. Currently Jack can only fold spaces between 8-10 feet apart and can only do so three times in succession. He often uses it to feign a form of short range teleportation.
Jack is able to take up to 180 lbs of extra mass (generally one person) with him into the void as long as he has a physical connection to it such as a hand on a shoulder or a finger touching a rug. He has to take an object/person in their entirety when doing so otherwise the effect will not work. In short this means he cannot take off someone's arm or just 180 lbs of cement floor or one made of wood plans would be a different story however.
If contact with Jack is broken while in the void the person/object will begin to fade back into the real world and there will be a 1-3 second window in which contact can be restored to keep the object/person in the void. Jack also has the ability to expel someone from the void immediately while still in contact with them.
Lastly, when in the void state Jack is initially visible to the naked eye for 2-3 seconds as an insubstantial shadow, after that point he will fade further from view until he becomes invisible… except under certain conditions.
Weaknesses and Limitations:The void is only a pale imitation of the real world and as such lacks many of the finer details, breathable air among them, as such Jack can only stay in the void for as long as he can hold his breath which at best is a minute and and a half if he holds completely still, more often he is on the move and so struggles to stay in the void for more than 20 seconds. If he is also warping space this time is reduced even further, sometimes to just 1-2 seconds if he warps space in quick succession and leaves him breathless.
It should be noted that although he can warp space to a limited degree, Jack is largely incapable of interacting with anything while in the void. Static objects, no matter how light they may be in the real world are utterly immovable in the void. While this does not prevent him from moving himself up and over obstacles if he has the reach it does stop him from opening/closing doors, breaking windows or reading books that aren’t already open.
Lastly, while the void state will render him invisible to the naked eye after a few seconds, if he is put under UV light Jack will instead glow like a neon sign and also be briefly blinded if caught unawares. Jack is still immune to harm when under UV light and has no physical presence, he is essentially just a very bright hologram.
Physical AbilitiesGeneral Physical Capabilities: Having become an outcast in his teenage years Jack had the privilege, nay honour, of attending the school of hard knocks on a regular basis due to what he’d would claim was ‘strength of character’ which, if squinted at under a certain light, might also be seen as an inability to keep his mouth shut.
As such Jack has learned to be rather quick on his feet and adept at climbing in an urban environment, something which becomes far easier when potential handholds can be up to 10 feet away. His stamina is also above average for his age but from far from olympic level as his mutation has required him to learn how to control his breathing. His speed and reflexes are neither good nor terrible, he can throw a punch and kick a man when they’re down as easily as anyone else but he wouldn’t last long in a fair fight against someone who knew what they were doing.
Fighting Style: If in public plan A is generally to is to rely on the presence of witnesses to deter any overt act of aggression. If plan A fails, then plan B is generally to head for the hills or closest equivalent. If plan B also fails or, if he feels like it, plan C is to use his mutation to dodge oncoming attacks and then step straight through the target before hitting them in the back of the head or some other target of opportunity.
Fighting Style Pros/Cons: Simple and straightforward, doesn’t rely on complicated maneuvers which instead lets him stay focused on his surroundings so he knows when to cut his losses.
History Of Your CharacterBorn in London but raised in Hong Kong from the age of 10 onwards Jack initially had something of a charmed life. His family had interests in a prominent oil company and had begun to expand into the realm of finance seeking to gain a foothold in the Chinese market. Initially welcomed by the government with open arms the Smith family became a rising star in the business world and their standing in the Hong Kong and China was fairly high which, when combined with the Asian concept of reputation or ‘Face’ meant that Jack grew up with peers who were constantly seeking to curry favour. While this did wonders for Jacks confidence it also led to a rather bloated ego as few his own age, and even some of his elders, would rarely disagree with him.
When he turned 15 however the Chinese government levelled charges of fraud against the Smith family business and, while the accusation carried little weight in Hong Kong itself which had its own semi independent governing body, it provided sufficient pretext for the authorities to confiscate all of his families holdings in mainland China which was a sadly significant amount.
Now lacking both the favour of the government and any influence their former wealth could have obtained Jack found himself suddenly an open target for mockery and bullying. Surprised and hurt by those he’d thought his friends he tolerated the abuse for a time before ultimately responding as all young men do when pushed too far and the ensuing fight left him and three others in hospital to deal with various broken bones.
Things likely would have only gotten worse from there if he hadn’t discovered his mutation and with it, the ability to taunt and provoke his harassers with near impunity. An invisible eavesdropper is difficult to plan against and even harder to chase, especially when you don’t even know to look for them.
Eventually things settled down and Jack developed a new social circle among the schools other outcasts. It was from them he learned the joy of an adrenaline rush and insulting others until they became your friends or forced them to throw the first punch so you could punch back.
When he turned 17 his family finally gave up on continuing business in Asia and relocated to America. Jack now finds himself in NYC completing his last year of high school and running the odd job for the local triad.
