The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. Ignacio still didn't understand why they needed a tanning bed, then. He understand tanning beds period. Weren't people purposely exposing their skin to UV light that causes cancer? Ignacio shook his head and decided not to ask anymore questions concerning tanning.
"You want to be a singer? Why not go to LA, then? That's where all the people who want to be famous go," Ignacio explained with a shrug of his shoulders. His kaleidoscope eyes glimmered in the light of the setting Sun. "...Where's Kentucky again?"
"I wanna be on broadway..." She said, a starry eyed look in her eyes at that point. Yeah, she had the dream. Annnnd living it was easier said than done. "For now, I guess it's just me and my fiddle." She nodded toward the fiddle that was tucked safely under the duffel, on the floor of the car. Yep, seemed like a great life, right?
She sighed and asked, "Why you askin' all these question anyways, kid?" Her brow quirked as she turned her dark eyes his way.
Broadway, eh? Everyone wants to be on Broadway. Ignacio thought about doing that, but as said before, acting was no longer something he wanted to do. Or so he thought. Anyways, back to Martha. Ignacio looked down at her fiddle and tilted his head to the side. It was a nice looking stringed instrument.
"...Just curious, that is all. I came here from the Mansion and decided to go for a week to catch a couple of rays from the Sun while it's still up." Ignacio shrugged his shoulders. He plucked a piece of lint from his shoulder and flicked it off. How did that get there?
"You're pretty curious," she stated blandly, examining her nails. She then said, "It's dark out, now. You absorbing moon beams too?" She wasn't even teasing him. She sighed and grabbed the other burger, unable to keep from eating it because, damn it, she was still hungry. She took a healthy bite of the sandwich and asked, mouth full of food again, "What mansion?" Normally, she cared about appearances, but she couldn't help the hunger being sharp as it was.
Her eyes watched him carefully, guarded. Hell, never used to talk to gorgers... She briefly wondered if the kid was of a rainbow typed personality. But to be honest? She didn't care if he was or not. She hated some of the strict rules in her culture.
"Moon beams? No, no. That's not me." Ignacio shook his head. He wondered if there was a mutant who did absorb energy from the moon. That would a very interesting encounter. Nonetheless, Ignacio scratched underneath his chin and smiled.
"You don't know the Mansion? It's for mutants," he explained, "the sister school to Xavier's Institute?" Maybe it was the fact that she grew up in the middle of nowhere as a gypsy. Iggy didn't know for sure. "And I'm a mutant."
"A mutant, eh? Can you melt sh*t with your sunlight infused powers? Cause that would be pretty cool. Not gonna lie. But no... I ain't never heard of that place. Being a mutant is pretty taboo in Gypsy culture. You were considered cursed if you could do weird sh*t like what you are talking about. Maybe that's why I ran away. Cause I guess you can call me one too. But no matter, right? I'll make my own way and damn the consequences." She shoved half the burger in her mouth at that point, groaning as she pigged out. Damn it, but that burger was delicious.
She seemed like she could not care any less right at that moment.
Ignacio shook his head, "nothing like that," though, he met that Juliette could. That woman could take the Sun's place if she wanted to. However, Ignacio would feel very sad since the Sun was his only source of power. That and maybe UV light.
He listened to her explain how the Gypsy culture saw mutation as a curse. Ignacio raised his eyebrows at that, "really? Back in Colombia, some view mutations as a gift from the old Aztec and Mayan gods," or so his parents believed that. They used to tell him that he held Tollan in his eyes. Of course they didn't think the Old Gods were real, but it was nice for Ignacio to hear growing up.
"You're a mutant too?" Iggy asked with wide eyes, "you should totally come back with me to the Mansion. You'll have all the free food you want, a place to sleep. You'd like it there."
"And be around all kinds of people on purpose? I dunno about that, Kid. I just got away from a loud bunch of people and you thank I wanna go live with more? Pshyeah right." She laughed. She had a nice laugh. "Besides, I don't even know where it is anyways." She stuffed the last, pretty big piece of burger into her mouth and chewed. She wadded up the wrapper and chucked it in the trash, then when she finished eating, a soft belch came out without her meaning to. "Scuse me." Martha grabbed for a napkin from her console, wiping her mouth daintily now. She felt much better, much less grumpy. God, it felt good to have food.
"...There's free food," Ignacio repeated, "you don't want to miss out on breakfast. It's really good," he sniffed and studied teh woman closer. When she burped, Ignacio scrunched up his nose, "you're excused."
He paused for s second. "The Mansion has burgers and fries," Ignacio didn't know what else to say in order to make her go back with him to the mutant safe haven. Instead, he lazily cuffed his hands together and concentrated. His eyes started to glow sunset orange and soon a ball of orange and yellow light started to form. It shifted until it was in the shape of a mini sun.
After a while, he stopped and looked at her. "...What's your name by the way?"
She peered at him as if bored. "Fine, I'll check it out... But I dunno about stayin." She threw her hands up. It wasn't the whole... burger thing... it was that she wanted to be a lone wolf. Truth was, it wasn't that easy going from big family to nothing at all. She wasn't even happy about it. She just wanted to live a quiet life and not steal pocketbooks for money and blah blah blah.
She grumbled and got into the car, indicating for him to get in to tell her the way. "Martha," she said grumpily.
"¡Muy bien!" Ignacio clapped a few times, "at least get one night's rest in a comfortable bed." The sun had almost finished setting and Iggy had to get back to the Mansion. He didn't know if they were going to have burger's tonight, but the food was always good. He hopped in the car after her and buckled up.
"You'll have to turn around." Iggy instructed with a smile. He pulled out his phone to check his emails. There were a couple of concerning potential commercials, but he closed down shop on that. Though, one more wouldn't be so bad. Plus, his savings account was looking a little dry.
She kind of rolled her eyes in her grump funk, he was too effing cheerful for her right at the moment. She was not always like this, she felt bad to some degree, but she had been curled up in the back seat of her car plenty of nights and such. She was just... tired and hungry, and she had to admit that she was kind of scared being in a bigger city than Louisville.
She had to turn onto another street to get turned around and stuff, and with his help, she coaxed her Pinto hoopty mobile toward the Mansion, only stalling twice on the way.
The ride there was pretty chill for Ignacio. Nothing major happened on the way there. Once they pulled up in front of the Mansion, Iggy hopped out of the car.
"Are you ready? You'll like it here, I promise." Ignacio started walking across the lawn and toward the doors. The Sun had finally set and soon Iggy's self loathing was sure to follow.
She gave him an indifferent shrug as she got out of the car. She stared at the massive building ahead, and... did not feel good about it at all, but she wouldn't say this to Iggy, for he was trying to be nice to her and she had been a turd. She sighed and followed him across the lawn, doing all she could not to turn around and go back to her car.
There was such thing as too big for a young woman who was used to living in the close quarters of a trailer her whole life. One extreme to the next.
Once they both were inside, Ignacio turned to look at Martha. He could tell that she was overwhelmed with everything. He was the same way when he first arrived three years ago.
"I know it's a lot, but if you don't like it, you can leave tomorrow. There's another place, Sanctuary that's for homeless mutants, too so you have options." Ignacio explained with a bright smile. He made his way toward the kitchen. "I can sneak you some food so that you don't have to be swarmed by a bunch of chicos."
Ignacio sniffed and handed her a plate, "there ya go."
