The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Aurum passed the salad and while Riley dished some onto her plate he commented that he was still looking for his niche.
That was hard for the brunette to believe. To her, Aurum was the guy that lawfirms should be falling all over themselves to hire. What client wouldn’t want someone like him walking in to defend them? He was even good at what he did. That whole Lonnie thing had hurt his rep though, and Riley still felt a little responsible.
Why was she being so open? One of the first things she’d learned in New York was that nobody wanted to hear her story. They didn’t care why she was doing what she was doing. Only that she was doing it well. She got the feeling that Aurum kind of did care though…or that at least he was interested.
”Sometimes if you can’t find one….it’s a sign that you have to carve one out for yourself.” she said, picking up the vinaigrette she’d taken from the fridge and dousing her salad.
”Besides you said one of the guys we met at the party was interested. I’ll bet you’re in the courtroom in no time.”

"Maybe..." Aurum trailed, dishing up some pasta. "Although." A thought struck him.
"Although, I guess if things don't pan out, I could try and start my own office." A crazy idea? Maybe. But if he got a loan, and worked hard, then maybe... it was an idea.
He actually didn't mind that idea one bit. It sounded like something Ami would have suggested.

Starting…his own office? Riley studied Aurum for a moment and tried to decide how best to respond to what he’d just said. Obviously he wanted some sort of input, but Riley didn’t know anything about law offices.
”Do people do that?” she said.
”I mean, don’t take that the wrong way or anything. I think it’s a great idea…” she just didn’t want to see anyone as disillusioned as she’d been.
”In fact…I can see it crystal clear.” she grinned, and may have gestured with her fork as she spoke.
”Afternoon sunlight streaming into a dim office through half-closed blinds…you’re sitting behind a desk in a fedora with your suit jacket draped over the back of your chair. You’d look good in a fedora…” she added, then frowned a bit.
”I don’t know when you became a hard-boiled PI in a black and white movie from the 50’s…but I digress. I think that if you can’t find your niche…you should go for it. Make your own.” Who was she to rain on his parade?

Almost a city away, Amelia fiddled with her phone, entering data. As Gawain said something, her eyes flicked to the clock on the phone. A sly smile slipped onto her face. It was time.
Amelia turned the smile Gawain's way, replying to his comment. The comment had been on presents. Maybe, if her brother was lucky, he'd be getting a present too. Although that might go against her plans.
Eh. Whatever. She had not taken the time to turn it off, and now it was time.
Amelia's focus had long shifted away from this fact of it being time, back to Gawain. It stayed there. It was Aurum's turn to realize exactly what time it was. As Barry White began to play in the background from the speakers on a CD/Alarm Clock.
What a way to ruin a perfectly nice sentiment and a great message.
"Uh." He did not know how to respond to that. He settled for getting up to find the damn thing.
A moment later, the music shifted from Barry White to a CD of smooth jazz.
Aurum came back and sat down again, brusquely. "Sorry about that." He apologized, smiling weakly. "My little sister is evil. So, you were saying something about film noir?" He thought she would look good in a fedora, too.

And then….there was Barry White.
Riley just had to laugh at the look of discomfort on Aurum’s face. She almost wanted to tease him about it, maybe make a comment about how it would be a shame to let such good music go to waste… But, the Golden Boy had already gotten up to change the song.
The music changed. Mmmm jazz. Aurum had good taste in music. Between that, the food, and the good conversation, it was enough to make a girl forget that she was bitter and twisted. Riley smiled and leaned back in her seat as he returned and shrugged her shoulders at her host’s apology.
”Nothing wrong with a little Barry.” she said, ”I’ve heard his smooth baritone aids the digestion.”
Riley grinned again and nodded towards where Aurum had been a moment before and where the jazz was now filtering from, ”This is nice too though.”
As to the noir. Riley studied Aurum for a moment before speaking, slightly more serious than she’d intended.
”I was just saying that I could picture you in that setting. Ready to play the hard-boiled hero to some damsel in distress.”
Then she smiled.
”Then I remembered that you’re a lawyer, not a PI.”

>>”I’ve heard his smooth baritone aids the digestion.”
Among other things.
>>”This is nice too though.”
He could agree on that.
Not so much on the Barry. To each, their own.
He nodded at her. "My favorite."
>>”I was just saying that I could picture you in that setting. Ready to play the hard-boiled hero to some damsel in distress.”
He smirked at the mental image.
Her followup comment did not stop the smirk.
"My little sister bought me this watch once," He commented. "Said it was from this video game series she thought I'd like. About a crime-solving defense attorney with a heart of gold."

He didn’t take offense to the small lawyer joke. Good. Too often they’d faltered because of misunderstandings. It was nice to hang out like this. To eat good food and listen to good music and talk about all of the things that normal people talked about.
Like watches. Silly ones based off of video game characters that were given as gifts by sisters.
”Did she think he was like you?” Riley asked, ”Because I do.” she paused and chuckled a bit at the thought.
”It’s kind of like you’re wearing yourself on your arm. Isn't it?"

Aurum chuckled. "I guess so. Haven't played the game myself, though. But it isn't so odd, is it? Crime-solving defense attorney?"
Aurum thought for a second, recalling a couple of shows he used to watch. "Matlock pulled it off. And Perry Mason."
A thought struck him and he had to add with another chuckle. "Not that I plan to go around tracking down any crimes to solve, mind you... that's more for the police."

Aurum listened, nodding along. And then Riley got to the end, and he opened his mouth.
"Well, technically. If I'm a defense attorney, it's my job to get down to the truth, by exposing all the flaws in the prosecution's logic. Which is a kind of 'helping out'. And 'figuring things out'. And a better one, too, because then I don't have to deal with all the police paperwork and going up on the stand as witness." Avoiding a large bulk of the legal system... through being a part of the legal system. Nice.
"But yeah, anyways. Food. Guess we should dig in." He stirred his pasta. It was already getting cold.

Riley nodded while Aurum explained his job to her. She’d kind of already figured all that out, but things were going so well that the brunette wasn’t going to ruin it with silly spite.
Aurum agreed about the food, and Riley took a bite. For something made by a kid…the spaghetti was awesome. Definitely better than she could make. Then again, the girl was Aurum’s sister, and apparently some sort of savant trouble maker.
”This is good.” she admitted, pausing a moment to take a bite of garlic bread.
”Would yours have been better?” she asked after she’d chewed.

"I don't want to brag," Aurum smiled. But the smile probably did all the bragging for him.
"We'll have to do this again, some time. And I'll actually cook." He suggested, during a chewing break.
Ami hadn't done too badly. It was pretty hard to ruin pasta. You just boiled noodles. The bread was probably store-bought, with her own garlic paste. And the sauce was probably from a can. Simple, but it all worked.
He was not going to be snobby about any of it, one way or another.

Ahhh, he wanted a repeat. Riley smiled, ”We should. And I’ll come with high expectations, ready to be impressed.”
So there it was. Aurum pretty much was perfect. Riley considered that for a few moments as she ate, and tried to figure out if the question bouncing around off the walls of her mind made any sense or if it just made her sound like a creep.
Finally, she figured she’d try it.
”So you cook. You keep a lovely apartment. You’re a defense lawyer with a heart of gold. You obviously work out. What aren’t you good at?”

Either he was utterly arrogant and had a room-sized ego, or he really was perfect.
Nope. Riley wasn’t buying it.
”Oh come on.” she protested. ”There had to be something that you’re bad at that you can think of off the top of your head.”
Everyone had something they were terrible at. Riley was pretty sure she could give a laundry list! The music filtered through in the silence that followed her slightly incredulous comment, and Riley snagged the topic.
”Dancing. You can’t possibly be good at dancing on top of everything else.”
