The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"This court is in recess."
It was lunch time. Jurors and courtroom attendants filed out. He had an hour to eat. Aurum hurried.
As a witness in mascara girl's murder trial, he'd been required to come. He'd already spoken his part. Now, it was just waiting.
Paper crinkled as Aurum opened his brown paper sack and retrieved a sandwich he'd made earlier for the occasion. It wasn't anything stupendously groundbreaking. No super amazing cooking invention or recipe he'd been wanting to try out. It was PB & J.

The court was in recess.
When the judge said the words, Riley actually groaned in frustration, the sound drawing incredulous looks from the people sitting around her in the courtroom. Who on Earth wanted the morning session to go on longer?
Someone who hated getting on the stand in a courtroom, and had done it enough to know she hated it.
Riley Sommers did.
There was nothing for it though, and the dark haired woman followed the rest of the crowd out of the benches and out into the courthouse. Riley knew that she wasn’t the one on trial here, or even the one defending herself. It was a simple matter of getting onto the stand and repeating everything she’d seen from an observer’s point of view. Easy enough, right?
Wrong. Riley didn’t feel like she’d just been an observer, she and Aurum had been all over that apartment, drawing their own conclusions, and noting things. How could she testify as a simple observer?
Aurum had done well enough with all the questions he’d been asked. At lease Riley thought he had, she’d kind of gotten distracted remembering how much fun that night had been…despite the dead body.
Out she went, halfway wandering and halfway seeking out her lawyer friend.
She found him by a window, eating peanut butter and jelly.
”Always thinking ahead, huh? ” she said, dropping down to sit by Aurum on the bench.”I forgot to bring anything.” she added ruefully.
”You looked good on the stand.” The dark haired woman added. ”I guess I’m up after lunch.”

"Good." He commented. "I've talked to a few of the contacts we made. I think one of them is actually considering hiring me."
It wasn't a lie. Since the last time they'd met, he'd done a lot of job searching. Worked extra hard. If he was handling the bills for Muse and himself (and sometimes, Ami), he needed all the cash he could get.
"What about you?" He asked. "And you're right. Next time, we should set something up, instead of waiting for fate to intervene. It's no fun losing touch with a friend."

>>”Well, then thank goodness I found you that night.”
Aurum smiled. Yup.
She went on talking. The smile vanished. Horses? Seriously? Nope.
He focused on his sandwich, and on not being a critic. Aurum nodded in response to that last comment, but he didn't offer a peanut-butter filled chewing response.

Aurum got real quiet, and Riley frowned. She’d been trying to give him a compliment…to let him know that she hadn’t really done anything. That he’d done all the work as far as the networking was concerned.
Riley sighed and leaned back, taking another bite of her apple.
”Remind me not to compliment you anymore.” Riley said, with a sideways scowl in Aurum’s direction.
More silence as he ate…Riley hated awkward silence almost as much as she hated getting on the stand in a courtroom.
”At least we know we were right….” she said. ”That night…at the party.”

>>”Remind me not to compliment you anymore.”
Aurum frowned at her. "Never, ever?" And all because of her lame analogy.
Lame.
Heh. Horses. Lame.
Lame.
He did not crack even the slightest smirk. He did nod, however, when she commented on the night at the party. "Yeah. It's looking like it. I can't believe the motive the prosecution is building for her, either. Seriously. That's insane." He shook his head in disbelief.

”Nope. Never.” Riley said archly, a half smirk pulling up the corners of her lips. They both knew she was BS’ing. ”Maybe the next time I use an excellent horse analogy, you’ll appreciate it.”
He mentioned motive, and Riley nodded her head, ”I know right. Can’t say I’m completely shocked, but still…” Lawyers and their motives, and their witnesses, and their lunch breaks.
Speaking of which, this one was ticking merrily away while they talked. Riley took another bite of her apple and shook her head when Aurum asked if she was doing anything after.
”I cleared my incredibly busy social schedule just for this little ole’ court case. Why?”

"Guess I should look a gift horse... I'll let you finish that."
>>”I cleared my incredibly busy social schedule just for this little ole’ court case. Why?”
Aurum chewed his bite of sandwich and swallowed. Blah. Peanut butter. He reached into his bag and pulled out a bottled chocolate milk. He knocked back a swig. He could finally breathe.
"Was thinking we could catch up," He said, setting the bottle down beside him.

Riley chuckled. Gift horse. That was more like it. She’d known that Aurum was just corny enough to appreciate the analogy, and he hadn’t disappointed in the end. She didn’t finish the sentence though, just let it lie.
The lawyer finished his sandwich and pulled out chocolate milk. Riley had to chuckle again. Of course Aurum drank chocolate milk. Just like he believed in the general goodness of people, and probably changed in phone booths so he could fly off and save the world.
He finished his sandwich and asked if she wanted to catch up after all of this was done. Riley’s first instinct was to say no. This was not the kind of guy she needed to be hanging around. It was a recipe for disaster. They kept getting thrown together though, and dammit…she was having fun.
”I’d love to.” she said. ”But can we do something other than coffee. I like the stuff…but that gig’s getting old.”

"Skydiving and pasta dinners, it is." Aurum joked. He crumpled up the empty sandwich baggy and stuffed it into his brown paper sack, then took another drink of his milk. "Okay. So no coffee. What did you have in mind?"
Yes, he was putting her on the spot when he had requested the hangout time. He was just that awful. Mr. Perfect, his ass.

Ah. SO he was going to put her on the spot. Riley snorted at the prospect of skydiving. ”I’ve never understood why anyone would ever jump out of a perfectly good plane.” she’d never been in one before, but she knew how high in the air they went, and just the concept of jumping out of one was ridiculous.
”Pasta sounds good though. As long as it’s someplace with real garlic bread and not those chintzy little hard breadsticks that they throw on the table in a mason jar…” Hey, if he was going to put her on the spot, she was going to be specific.
”But I’m open to suggestion too if you were as serious about the pasta as you were the skydiving.”

"Pasta could be good," Aurum agreed. "So long as the breadstick doesn't function like Ahab's harpoon, like you said. Skydiving... I was kidding about." He smirked. Had that even needed saying?
He glanced towards the clock. "Should probably finish eating quick, though. Lunch break is almost up."
Alas, parting was such sweet sorrow, or something like that.
