Character

Personality: Noel is very distrustful of strangers and sometimes child-like because she is constantly learning and re-learning things. She is straightforward and brutally honest. Noel has had many violent upheavals in what she believes to be true and right; as a result she strives to pursue what she feels is just. She respects power and those that are powerful because they have so often kept her under their thumb. Noel tends to be stubborn and often attempts to gloss over situations where she might not know something. She is also observant and good at noticing small details.

Hobbies/ Interests: People watching and tinkering. Noel has an inherent talent for fixing physical problems (ie: a leaky pipe)

Job or part time job and description: Cleaner (previously contracted assassin/bodyguard for Ragnarok)

Fears/ phobias/ concerns: Mental health and morality. Her power makes it difficult to discern what is real. She wants to be on the side of justice at all times.

Special talents: Because of Noel's abilities and perceptions, she is generally able to get the measure of a person (in her opinion at least) in a very short period of time. Her intuition is good.


Morality

Good/ bad/ neutral/ other: Rather neutral. Noel can easily be swayed with words and memories so long as they register to her as true. She strives to do what is right whether that is legal or not. She is not concerned with being perceived as “nice” or cute or feminine or good; she prefers to just get things done.


Mutations

Mutation description: Sensory Based Memory Manipulation (AKA Synesthetic Psychometric)

Noel has the ability to affect and be affected by memory in several ways: memory scanning, memory absorption, and memory erasure.

Memory Scanning: Noel has an always-on mental connection to those within sight rage that allows her mind to intuitively compare a person’s words to their memories. This means that if a person says something with the intent to deceive, her power alerts Noel. This alert is perceived by Noel as a range of flavors. This gives her a built in lie detector— she gets a bad taste in her mouth with every lie.

Memory Absorption: Alternately, Noel can create an intentional, direct connection to another mind in order to experience another person’s memories. She creates this connection by tasting another person directly or indirectly. She must focus on a time range or a topic and her mind will delve into those memories only. She can maintain a direct mental connection for only as long as the taste remains within her mouth which amounts to just a few minutes beyond continuous tasting. When experiencing a memory, she sees the memory as the person remembers it, from their point of view.

Memory Erasure: Noel may choose to erase memories in link to a certain subject or object, but it is easiest and most permanent if she erases a time frame. Short time frames are easy to erase. One hour of memory is nothing. Erasing the memory of your mother, on the other hand, may very well be impossible due to the intricacies of how many memories she is in and how many things can trigger a person to remember.

More permanent memories (ones committed to long term memory) are most likely erased for only a temporary amount of time (minimum of one hour unless triggered to remember before). Short term memories are possible to permanently erase.

Memory Gifting: Noel is able to show a memory to anyone(s) in contact with her skin. This hijacks the person’s train of thought and senses for the duration of the transfer. Memories gifted this way are treated as Noel’s absorbed memories:
• They take up mental space.
• They may be a collection of topical memories or a time frame.
• Memories are experienced in first person which includes visual/audio/tactile information, but excludes any internal dialogue.
• Skills can be attempted immediately, but it’s like imitating something you’ve read about extensively or seen on television: until practiced, it is an imitation.

The memory will remain clear for one hour before beginning to fade. The character receiving the memory can decide if it is retained permanently.

Strengths:
Memory Scanning: The ability to measure the truth of spoken words. She only has to be within direct hearing range of the mind associated with the words.

Memory Absorption: Noel can absorb years worth of memory in an instant which allows her to learn skills and take in memories from outside sources. Once Noel has absorbed a memory, she can revisit it at any speed, delving specifically or absorbing an overview.

Noel can taste an object to form a connection to the person who has used the item last (skin cells must be left behind). If the person is not present she can only glean limited memories associated with the direct use of the object tasted. If the person is present, she can form a direct mental connection with them for as long as she tastes them.

Noel is immune to her own tasting ability. She cannot learn a memory she left behind on the coffee pot. That also means she won't have to constantly relive putting on chapstick.

Memory Erasure: The ability to make people forget. With OOC permission, Noel can force a person to forget a specific subject.

Weaknesses and Limitations:
Memory Scanning: A person may believe something to be true, even if it is objectively untrue. This will taste like truth to Noel. Anything that calls into murky veracity (sarcasm, joking, etc.) does not translate in a helpful way to Noel.

Television, written notes, or phone calls do not trigger her power because she cannot connect the words with the mind that formed them.

Memory Absorption: Noel must absorb memories by topic or by time frame. Time frame memories are more comprehensive, but take up more of her memory space with “unnecessary” time. Topical memories are sometimes incomplete since the lessons we learn are not always directly associated by topic. Absorbed skills can be attempted immediately, but it’s like imitating something you’ve read about extensively or seen on television: until she practices herself it is an imitation.

She will lose any skills that she does not practice, just as anyone else might.

The human brain has an active capacity of about ten years worth of clear recollection which means that not all memories are preserved perfectly and that Noel has a maximum capacity for how much memory she can keep.

Noel cannot read minds. She can only access memories. A person must have slept on an experience for it to translate into the type of memory that Noel can access.

Noel cannot form a mental connection to dead people.

Memory Erasure: With every memory Noel erases, she must lose an equivalent memory of her own. If she makes you forget your own name, she will forget her own name. It often leaves Noel just as confused as her victim. Noel must be able to make direct eye contact with her memory victim for her ability to trigger. Anyone whose memories are erased can be triggered to remember what was forgotten unless they sleep on it.

While triggering her power and for a short time directly after, Noel sees only a jarring bounce of what is in front of her because of the eye movement associated with triggering her power.

Anything Noel learns is vulnerable to her memory erasure skill.


Physical Abilities

General Physical Capabilities: Having trained, Noel is stronger than the typical athletic human woman, but will not be setting any Olympic or even local records. She is not particularly fast, but she has mastered the art of long distance running and is able to easily run 6 miles at a time. Her reflexes are in line with someone used to training, sparring, and fighting for her life.

Fighting Style: A combination of firearms training, Greek-style sword training, and an ancient version of kung-fu. Noel prefers takedowns and submission holds to straight up murder, but she can manage either one.

Fighting Style Pros/Cons: Dead people can’t give up their memories so Noel is less likely to kill you than someone else might. It’s also possible that in the end, no one will remember why they wanted to fight in the first place.
If things are forgotten, often things are left un-done. If Noel takes a memory during a fight, it’s less likely to be absorbed correctly. Noel's fighting styles are archaic which means they are effective, but not informed by the last few hundreds of years of techniques.

History Of Your Character
Noel’s power developed at the age of 12. At first it was only the strange tastes. Doctors dismissed her condition as one of synesthesia, crossed neural paths. Getting a flavor from words was ridiculous. Getting a displeasurable flavor due to lies specifically was even more unlikely. Her older sister thought she was grubbing for attention. Her younger brother thought it was cool. Her parents, after ascertaining that the phantom flavors had no ill effects on Noel’s health, largely ignored her.

Noel learned the hard way that people like their lies. At first she called them out all the time. After a miserable middle school experience, she learned to keep her judgement to herself.

Once the forgetting started, she couldn’t pretend her power didn’t exist. Oh sure, she made a teacher forget when to give a test or two, but for the most part she tried to use her power only for good. Like making her parents forget she even had a power. Now, living on the other side of the country, she doesn’t have to worry about her family worrying about her forgetful nature.

In 2009, she moved to New York recruited by a less than legal branch of the FBI that actively worked to tag and track mutants. The program was abandoned in 2011, as was Noel.

In 2011, the program was shut down and Noel was used to erase its existence from the minds of those who participated. This lead to some major holes in her life which she patched as best as she was able through finding other work and bouncing between mostly-legal jobs until eventually Noel went to work as security at Faust Pharmaceuticals. From there she was convinced that the best thing to ease an aching unicorn’s heart was to help him forget some of his most troublesome attachments. This ushered in the site’s Age of Sebastian and left Noel with even more holes in her life. Noel worked as Sebastian’s Shadow and enforcer until he retired from to New York to start his church in the midwest in the summer of 2012.

In 2013, Noel bounced between homeless shelters and the Sanctuary as she bounced around with less and less legal jobs until she was picked up in 2015 by Panu, adopted son of Ambrose Jaager. By day she functioned as Panu’s bodyguard, English tutor, and fitness coach. By night, Noel functioned as a precision assassin, taking out a few Adapted humans before she was picked up by police.

From police custody, to CIA custody, to the careful care of a Haven recovery center, Noel is now trying to define who she is for herself.

Sample RP:
Sometimes, Noel found herself spacing out. Often she would come back to herself and know that she’d done it. She’d wiped someone and in turn, she had wiped herself.

This time, she was sitting in a nice restaurant. She was dressed to the nines in a little black dress and there were two mostly emptied wine glasses. The other seat was empty. Dinner had either come and gone or never come at all. Her stomach had a slight knot in it so she couldn’t even tell if she was hungry. In her hand was a card with her own handwriting on it.

“You’re better off without him.”

Funny. Written words never tasted like lies. She just had to trust herself in these situations. If anyone would know, she would be able to tell herself whether she was better off forgetting. Apparently this one had been a dud. How many girls were lucky enough to make as clean a break as she? Noel tucked the card away. It hadn’t been the first time she’d used it and it wouldn’t be the last time that she would need it.

Sometimes… it didn’t even bother her to not know what she was missing.
