The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Out of hearing of Kevin, barring sudden onset of super hearing mutations, that was. Or lip reading. Shin spoke to Tarin. Quietly.
”Try not to react too much to this, or Kevin will get suspicious.” He said in a hushed, but casual, tone. ”The reason we were evasive about ‘other stuff’ at the mansion… the mansion has this training room. Super advanced technology. I don’t know how they do it. It can make things, almost like the holo deck on Star Trek. Like virtual reality, almost. It’s called the “danger room,” and it’s for advanced training. Takes an X-man invite to get in. But Kevin isn’t quite ready for that sort of thing. I just didn’t want to lie, even by evasion, for you. Since I hardly even know you.” Shin said.
God, that sounded so awkward. But Tarin ought to get it, right? Understand? It was a pretty cool thing they had, a kid would be bound to want to see it. And it was called the “danger room” for a reason.
He probably could have kept silent and kept Tarin in the dark, but…
”Speaking of hardly knowing you….”
He pulled out a business card from his wallet, and offered it to Tarin. He taught at the mansion, of course he had one of those. Kealey had helped him pick the right font and colors and everything.
Would the man take it? This whole conversation was kind of awkward, but— he was trying to put the right foot forward.
”You’re probably still learning a lot about our side of the rift. It’s good to have friends. Maybe we could chat some time?” Go over stories.

Everything was wrapping up. Lee was messing with her kid, and saying ‘thanks.’
He said a quick “no problem.” Shook his head at anyone who would have doubted her.
Tarin said it had not been him.
Beebee bee beep.
Shin told Lee He thought she would have ‘done just fine,’ while Tarin attended his alarm. He aimed a smile Tarin’s way.
That was just the first alarm apparently, but He could spend more time if needed. Shin idly wondered what the alarms were for. Not an insulin check. Did He have somewhere to be? Or had Shin missed a detail somewhere?
”Actually, there was something I wanted to speak with you about, privately. If that’s okay. Just be a minute, really.”
He wanted to tell him about the danger room, up front, away from Kevin. Explain the evasion, so it was not some guarded secret. He felt like some people hate secrets. Maybe they could even exchange data, numbers, so they could follow up on that super story, and any other things worth taking about. It felt like too much for today. Maybe they could do lunch?
To Lee and Kevin, shin said: ” Hope I was helpful. It was nice speaking with you both. If you have any questions, or need help, you have my number.”

Lee navigated the situation with a little bait and switch. She made it seem like, yes, there was something they were hiding. But in actuality, it was a shot. And an infirmary.
Shin did not visibly mouth “nice one.” He pictured doing so, in the safety of his own mind. Where Kevin could not see it. But he did nod along as Lee spoke, like ‘yes absolutely this is what I meant when I said good things come to those who wait, shots!!’ (Not the good kind, people). Kevin could save that shot surprise for later.
Kevin suddenly wanted anything but the shot. Good.
He turned to look at the mansion, but heard a quiet voice, aimed towards him, Tarin. “He never stood a chance.”
”Hmph,” A little smile played on his mouth as a puff of a snubbed laugh escaped him. He did NOT wink at Tarin. He only imagined doing so. He just turned to the man, and smiled.
”If we’re skipping the infirmary, I think we can call the tour complete, then?”
What was left? Did Lee need to fill out paperwork? No. That would be for another day. Before they left, he wanted to see if Tarin had a number so they could talk some time, if he had any questions or just plain wanted to, or even to hang out, all sociable-like.

Kevin was all for the mansion, seemed, thought it was the pinnacle of hotness, the tops of sweet, badass to the max. So cool! He wondered why his mother had never brought him there before, and—
Lee spoke to Kevin, then looked at Shin.
>>> ”I think that probably covers everything that we need to show Kevin at the moment. Anything else can wait till later, I think.”
He nodded. He clocked her. Understood.
Kevin was distraught by the fact he couldn’t have everything then, and there.
Shin suppressed a Willy wonka reference about someone who wanted the world, wanted the whole world… didn’t care how, they wanted it now.
What if Kevin’s power was blueberry transformation? Unlikely, given his parentage, but, what if…?
They would roll him around the mansion like a boulder. How would one even train someone to utilize that?
….Well, he supposed obstacle courses….
Shin kept his mouth shut. Lee had things well in hand. For all of two seconds.
”Good things come to those who wait?” He ventured helplessly. He tried again. ”Save a few surprises for later, yeah? It’ll be all the better when you do.”
he looked to Lee. Shrugged.
There were no walls to lean against for additional support. Halp.
He would need to work on this, for Michael. Pushover dad is pushover.

No no, it definitely was not going to become a recurring thing. Shin waved THAT idea away. If you have one student a ride on a flying motorcycle, they’d ask for another, and someone else would ask for one too, or something bigger and flashier, and before you knew it, mice were eating cookies or something.
Shin shook his head. ”Your mom is right. I bet you love hearing that. Probably about ten times a day.” Shin smiled.
Okay. Was that everything with the tour? Had they missed anything?
”Well, Lee. Tarin. Kevin. Does that cover it all? What do you all think of the mansion?” Shin asked.

”I can fly,” He confirmed.
The motorcycle made of shards, complete with sidecar, materialized in an eyeblink. He had reached “full charge” a while ago.
He climbed into the driver’s seat, and looked to Lee for that final nod of approval.
—
Once the approval was given, and Kevin was seatbelted into the sidecar, Shin began the ascent. He left Tarin and Lee on the ground below, to talk amongst themselves.
—
After a couple minutes of flight, Shin landed the shard motorcycle gently back on the ground by Tarin and Lee. He got out, and once everyone was free of the vehicle, he dismissed it into nothingness.

>>the graveyard book.
Oh wow, another Neil Gaiman book, wasn’t it? Funny how that worked. Popular authors, racking up the hits. He had never read it, but he knew the author. Knew the general gist… some kid, raised by spirits after his parents had… aww.
Tarin thought the book was an excellent pick, ‘aww’ moment completely ignored.
Kevin had to have been, what, 5 or 6, when Tarin had rifted away? Right? Most of his life. It was sad. But what can you do? You remember the good and try and live with the bad… but what else did they need to see?
Shin thought it over for a few seconds. They’d done the library. Short of walking the stacks, what else could you do? Get everyone a book and a library card? Insist Tarin ride the sliding ladder like he were a grown up child? No.
They’d done dorms, he had shown them where teacher offices and classrooms were, he had explained the living room and kitchen situation, but he did not think he had actually shown them those things…
Shin nodded, and quickly showed them the kitchen students could use, and the living room area with TV and a few old and used game systems. Kids were snacking in both. It was a quick tour. What else can you say?
‘This is a kitchen. Food is for everyone, but be respectful and don’t leave nothing for everyone?’
‘Don’t be a butt?’
‘Be kind, please rewind?’
Did they even have VHS any more?
Once the light speed tour of those areas were over, and he had shown any of the other things he had neglected in the mansions (hey there’s bathrooms over here, guys, these are important!), he said
”That concludes the indoor tour. The only things left are the grounds. We could walk, or did you want the aerial tour?”
He had been thinking on something big enough to carry a few folks. Mostly, he could just do the shard cycle with the sidecar for mom and son. Elevate them a few hundred feet, and just hang out with Tarin on ground level to talk. You could see a lot, up there. He was certain unless Mama T wandered out and had to speak with him, everything would be fine.
Mama T was an adapted. Cancelled powers if she got close. But she knew enough to steer clear of him if he was using his stuff.
From above, they’d be able to see the hedge maze in full, the basketball courts, the forest where the mystics had invaded, and likely any leftover scarring on the grounds of the mansion from the invasion. Hrm. And anything else he had failed to mention. Did they have a pool yet? Who knew?

Oooooh Frankenstein, what a surprising and intriguing pick from Lee! With the misunderstood creature, the real monster being his creator, and all the letters. A classic. It sent his mind reeling over all the good science fiction short stories he had read in his life, and all the serotonin that came with.
He gave Lee two big thumbs up and a stupid grin.
Then Tarin gave a quote and he turned the dual-thumbs up manic grin on him.
”Nice one!” He said.
Then he wandered over to stare at Kevin imploringly. He did not glance down at the phone screen. Teenage boys deserve privacy. You don’t want to know what they look at. Yes, even when their mother is present.
He got his attention with a cough, then inquired: ”Favorite book?”
now he was second guessing his pick, oh he liked count of monte cristo, wait no, he liked Dracula, but wait, where the red fern grows… he tried to calculate his percentage of like to find a clear winner, and found other titles that detailed him further. But he was still asking Kevin a question. And Mary Shelley was so cool.

>>> ”Am I going to have call her myself?” Lee asked, her voice teasing. ”Or are you going to remember this time?”
He promised he would this time.
And later that day, he did.
—-
American gods?
Shin smiled at that. ”Good pick,” he said.
The question got turned on him. Fair play.
”With how much I’ve heard the audio book, I feel like I should say ‘Pride and Prejudice,” He laughed. ”We put on the audiobook whenever Kealey and I go somewhere. And she loves the serial. But honestly? If I’m not saying some manga like “Dragon Ball,” I would probably say the Bartimaeus trilogy. It’s about some idiot kid wizard and the snide, sardonic genie he summons for petty revenge. The genie thinks in footnotes. Footnotes.” He emphasized. Then, he full-body-turned to Lee, and pointed.

He noticed when Lee dropped back to talk with Tarin. But he gave them privacy.
He talked with Kevin for a while as they walked, to distract him from the Tarin Lee conversation as much as anything. Small talk, really. He answered any questions the boy had, about the mansion and the students and the staff. Explained who the headmaster was, Rudy Kipperling, ((and how that really didn’t matter because he had never actually confirmed the man’s existence in a thread)).
—
Tarin seemed impressed by the library. Good.
Lee asked him a question.
”They’re well. Keeping busy. And thank you for the offer. I’ll have to let Kealey know some time.” He scratched the back of his neck.
Then he turned to Tarin, and explained what all books they had gotten since the rebuild. This time around, they actually had gotten some rare ones (Rudy liked the rare ones, if he actually existed). And they had one of those ladders you can use to get the high up books.

Oh boy. Oh boy, oh boy oh boy, what terrible timing.
Kealey would kill him: absolutely murderize him. No remains. Incinerated. Flash nuke. But not even an outline. Nothing left.
A call, now? While he was out and about with—
Doing errands with—
Ho boy.
The mode of transportation he prepared, he had spent a great deal of time on, before this event, of course. Preparing. Little had he known how relevant it would be. He strapped everyone in, once he had summoned it, he had made sure it had seatbelts. Then, Shin had landed neatly, a bit of a walking distance away from the site. He could walk. But he had to prepare.
He prepared carefully, strapping on the vest, making sure every belt was neatly attached, every support, supporting. He focused entirely on the safety of it, spent a good few minutes just being certain. He even figured out, and created a little safety helmet for everyone, out of shards. This was a construction site. He had to focus on safety.
Safety is important!!!
Sam had arrived first. Shin had figured that would have happened. He had spent all that time, preparing yeah. Sam was already speaking with a little red guy.
Shin approached cautiously. He stopped several feet away, as red guy turned to Sam.
“I’m mad!” The little red guy shouted. “They fired my brother, and I am mad!”
”Hey Sam,” Shin called out, from a distance.
He was wearing a front-facing baby chest carrier, and there was a baby in it. A very young baby, barely a few months. Both Shin and the child were wearing yellow shard safety helmets and safety glasses.
Safety is important. He saw both Sam and the kobold mutant were not wearing safety gear.
”Put on safety gear, guys. And then let’s talk this out peacefully.” Shin said. He couldn’t believe Sam. No safety gear, on a construction site?! OSHA would eat the supervisor for lunch. The X-men were a liability.
The little guy hopped up and down, mad. “No safety gear?! Yeah! Who told you why my brother Kyle got fired!!! They need to pay!!” And then he tried to bubble Cold Steel.

He didn’t need to convince her, because it was true. The world could be terrifying. Her voice was quiet and thoughtful, as she shared a thought of hope.
He nodded. “Yes,” he agreed. His eyes were locked on Michael. “Yes, we will.”
It was all they could do. It was the best they could do. And he had already been doing it before the baby had been born. He had never stopped. It was kind of his thing. Funny thing, that.
”Did Sam tell you… about Mirror and Becca’s kid, and the mystic who tried to stop the kid’s powers? I’m… still shaken about the whole thing even months after. I had to stop him. Sam, I mean.” The Asian grimaced.
It had been awful, and he needed to share it with someone. He had, with Kealey, but it had been intense and she had felt him feeling it and he did not like to make her feel those feelings, so he had not talked long, or very deeply. And he could talk with Sam about it, but how would that go? Pretty silly. He had not honestly talked about it with many folks. He supposed he needed an outlet, and Lee seemed a good listener.

He could tell from Kevin’s body language, and the fact that he was a young boy in 2024, a library? Probably not his cup of tea. Tea these days meant something else, anyways. But if he stuck around, even he might be impressed.
It was tragic, the cataclysm had ruined the previous library, with all its books and memories. It was lucky the X-men were not book collectors. Nothing priceless had been lost when the mansion had been destroyed. No first editions, no rare and expensive books, no comics and graphic novels signed by the original artist or author. Unless Kipperling the mansion headmaster collected things he was not aware of, it had mainly just been… a whole lot of really good books.
Replacing all the books would not have come cheap. The mansion staff had probably needed to dig into records stored off-site, to account for what had been lost. They had probably shared suggestions, recommended good books. He, surely, had offered up a few of his own (guys, I swear Dragon ball is good, just ignore the dumb humor and lechery I am certain have no place in a school library, it’s fiiiine). He had read that when he was their age.
Tarin DID like books! Hooray!
What if he had not? Could they have still been friends? He was rushing things a bit, they were currently only mild acquaintances, but the question remained: could they have been? Truly?!
>>> ”I’ll just bet that this place has a huge, wildly impressive library.”
”We’ve certainly done our best, since the rebuilding.” Shin smiled, and slipped across the bedroom to start leading them towards the library.
They passed a few students, on their way. One child, a boy with long hair that would have hung down to his neckline, if not for the fact he were walking laconically on the ceiling… waved as they went past.
Kevin probably would have craned his neck to look at that. What young boy wouldn’t.
Another student had been bright pink, like bubblegum, with kind of short-length “demon” horns or antennae. Fatter than antennae, but less threatening than horns. Her power was acid. She had been about Kevin’s age. “Morning,” she had said. Her eyes had been black, with red in the center and black pupils.
Another had walked past at a snail’s pace. On the younger side, he was the son of the yellow (or sometimes red) blur shin had grown up seeing at the mansion all the time. But a decade is a decade. He did not have the super speed of his father. His power… well, it was kind of the opposite. But he could share it. Useful, in its own way. It sure set him apart. He had picked the handle “Blur”, as a joke. When he used his power, for the targets and himself, the whole world around them grew faster, seemed to blur, but inside their little bubble, they moved the same speed as always. So useful. In a team.
Shin has greeted each, in turn. Briefly introduced Wally, Mina, and Blur. Then, they reached the library. It was everything you could possibly have wanted from a library, and more. Bigger than the library from beauty and the beast, with a couple levels (no curling walkways into a dark abyss, here), it was warm and woody, chocked full of books. Sweeping staircases, an elevator to a mezzanine, shelves and shelves and shelves. A front desk. Just picture the best library you can, and it was there. It seemed to change every time someone described it, but that was likely just a narrative-changing power everything in the mansion seemed to have. They were (or had been) close to a magical nexus, after all. And get that many mutants in one place at a time, things often change due to the simple need of being replaced.
”My wife used to work here,” Shin shared. He introduced them briefly to the new librarian, then asked what Tarin thought.

Lee used to think her powers were a curse, and that seemed sad to Shin. He got it. From what he had heard about how her powers worked, it was not an easy thing to deal with. It made sense. But still, he did not like it when anyone came in thinking poorly of themselves because of their mutations. He always did his best to help them through the struggle.
Lee spoke about Kevin’s not having mutation, and the hope that maybe if it were a gradual onset, they would figure it out sooner than she had with her own power.
She hoped they would not be a traumatic flashy thing, when they did appear.
Shin agreed with a small grunt and a nod.
A jogger came running past them, from the opposite direction. He shifted the baby pram a little, to give the person more room on the path.
”I think Kevin will have a good support group, however it happens.” He told Lee. ”Whenever it happens. But I do hope it isn’t traumatic.”
Thinking about mutations, thinking about his own kiddo as he stared down at Michael, he could not help but think about Becca and Mirror’s child. That mutation had come a lot earlier than in teenage years. And Sam had needed to fight to protect it, when Travis had come knocking.
He shuddered physically at the thought, slowing his stride a bit.
